Ward Macza An all around Rodeo Man

White Line Rodeo Stock Contractor Enjoys Lifestyle

By DARRELL NESBITT True, a dedicated committee, contestants and appreciative fans, are important to the mix of a successful weekend such as the Triple H Rodeo, but it would be all for not without the main ingredient - a stock contractor. Not only does a stock contractor - like White Line Rodeo which has been a fixture in Hamiota, MB since the community began promoting the sport back in 1999 - provide animal athletes but personnel are invaluable for choreographing the performances to ensure they run smoothly and safely for maximum audience enjoyment. Returning to the Westman community for his 13th year, Ward Macza’s wealth of experience in the rodeo domain is not solely known on Canadian soil, as the High River, AB all around rodeo man also stock contracts a number of events in the United States. Before producing or sub-contracting horses and bulls to rodeo, easily described as a big, fast moving, and often dangerous machine, White Line Rodeo got its start by supplying timed event cattle. “While we got our start in Lestock, SK back in 1995, the first rodeo produced in an arena setting was in Broadview, SK,” stated Macza. “With 2010 being our 15th year producing rodeos across North America it was an extra special year. Buying into Big Stone Rodeo, Inc. with Bruce Sunstrum, we were able to send stock to professional shows in California, Oregon and Washington.” Last year, the business man, cowboy and family man all rolled into one either produced or sub-contracted bucking horses and bulls to over 35 rodeos at various levels – from high school to professional - including the largest covered at Scottsdale, AZ. The professional rodeo down south called for 60 saddle bronc horses and 40 bareback animals. On home soil, a couple of larger ones covered was a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association stop in Airdrie, AB and the Threshermen’s Reunion & Stampede in Austin, which was a new rodeo gained by White Line Rodeo in Manitoba. While Macza doesn’t like to have a large pen of bulls to care for, he doesn’t mind keeping the top enders as to raise bulls is a long and tedious process. On the other hand, Macza has a large string of horses that are introduced to the buck chute at the age of three and become full-fledged rodeo athletes bucking in Canada and the U.S. a year later. “Keeping a large herd of horses in Montana, we normally buck 50 in the U.S. and upward of 80 at rodeos produced in Canada,” said Macza. “Despite what the activists might lead you to believe, bucking for eight seconds is not hard on the horses, but the hours spent travelling up and down the road can be.” Great bucking horses or bulls aren’t born every day. Much like the men and women who care for their livelihood, rodeo is a lifestyle an animal must come to enjoy and have a heart for. “To be good at its game, a horse or bull must first and foremost have athletic ability and like its job,” stressed Macza, who enjoys the rodeo lifestyle despite being on the road from the end of February to December. “It’s great to see an animal really buck or a cowboy make a great ride.” The longevity of White Line Rodeo is undeniable. Yet it isn’t just relying on family and background – it involves a commitment to the future. “Even though I’m into professional rodeo, I must also remember what got me there,” quipped Macza, who has found stock contracting to be a great business entity to raise a family. “I’m very thankful my wife Susan, and children, William (16), Lucas (13) and five-year-old daughter Grace, all share the kindred spirit of uplifting the western heritage by honouring and celebrating the rodeo lifestyle.” While the buck may very well start with White Line Rodeo’s featured prized stock such as Liquid Courage, the 2010 Bull of the Year in both the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) and Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA), 225 Strictly Business “CCA Bull of the Year” in 2009 and L9 Lucky Devil, the MRCA Bareback Horse of the Year in 2008, the future of rodeo in a small town setting lies in a close knit relationship. “Although rates may have gone up 15 percent, stock contractors, such as myself must be willing to work with small towns to make rodeos sustainable,” said Macza. “Having a good relationship with the Triple H Committee over the years has been a blessing, and while it’s an early MRCA/CCA season date, I feel it’s an entertaining rodeo weekend.” Darrell Nesbitt writes from Shoal Lake, Manitoba.

Alistair Hagan Well spring may finally be here; Pierson rodeo and the “Livewire Roping” are behind us (both awesome events), there are clinics happening everywhere and everyone is chomping at the bit to get going its awesome! But before we head into summer I’ll give you a recap of the winter sessions. I would like to send a sincere thank you out to the committees who attended or committee function as well as the partner groups who took part in the “Wheat City Stampede” round table discussion. Both meetings were extremely productive! Our MRCA committee reps Jessica Brown & Corey-Lynn Walker and our administrator Marion Funk also need a big thank you for all of their work organizing the day; it is not an easy task getting everyone together in the down season. I feel that meetings such as these are crucial to the future of both our association and the “WCS” The meetings were very productive because a group of people gathered that have an opinion and that opinion is derived from real experience, bottom line we had a room full of get it done people. I am going to give you all an overview of what when down but what I really want to translate to you is just how much these committees want to put on a great rodeo, not only do they work their butts off but I wish you could all see the pride that they all have in “their rodeo” and the want they have to make it the best. Every WCS partner group was represented and some powerful rodeo committees in 2 separate meetings. From the WCS discussion some real items and suggestions came to light that we will take to both the Keystone and the city of Brandon. (Both of these meeting will happen in early May). During the committee discussions a very interesting question was posed; “how do you see the WCS impacting your rodeo and vice versa, what do you feel is the connection?”

This question sparked some great conversations and some real brainstorming from everyone. To me it has always been crucial to our association that we have a great finals and if we continue to make the finals better each year, more contestants will want to be in Brandon each October and that means that they will be headed down the highway to all of our great rodeos all summer. We are helping the committees attract contestants by hosting a great finals and in turn these same committees are fast becoming the rodeos people will not miss and that makes our association stronger. I personally feel that we have a real opportunity; food for thought. We live in the middle of a lot of very rich and powerful young companies both in and out of the oil business but all thriving right now. That said just ask yourself where do you rodeo in front of the most people, which rodeos do you go to in the summer that have the largest crowds? This means we have a lot to offer as an association and as individual rodeos; great crowds all summer from Swan River to Pierson from Virden to Selkirk and all of the great rodeos in between. These crowds and all of these spectators offer a great potential advertising audience for these rich young companies mentioned earlier; because we have created these crowds we have great opportunity for corporate partnerships. These corporate partnerships will make it possible for us to promote our sport and preserve our heritage. Sounds good right but it is not that easy. In my opinion there is nothing more frustrating than missed opportunities because so few real opportunities will present themselves to you and if you want to get ahead you have to take advantage of any opportunity you can. That said we are taking steps towards improving our sponsorship team. Maybe you know a company or someone who would like to invest in the future of our sport, be a corporate partner?

PRESIDENT MESSAGE Welcome to the 2011 Team Penning Season. The Board and I are very excited about the upcoming show year. As you can see from the attached schedule we have confirmed 14 shows on 7 weekends throughout the summer. Show locations will be spread across the province from east to west, hopefully giving ample opportunity for everyone to play. Our board is worthy of mention on a few fronts. A few of us have been on staff for a number of years and our thanks to Rick, Dale, Eugene, Michael, Launa, and Ron for their tireless contribution. Our new members include Clint Masse, Ken Dalgliesh, Doug McLaren, and Heather Lischynski. Ken and Doug bring with them years of expertise as they are founding members of the association. Clint and Heather are new to MTPA and have much to offer in the way of new ideas and good energy. Special thanks to Clint Masse for taking on the role of sponsorship chair. As the association is entirely dependent on the funds raised by its members, we are delighted to have Clint take leadership in this. Once again I am excited about the format of last year's draw class and look forward to seeing more smiles as people mingle and have success penning with new riders. We feel it accomplished its purpose in providing beginners increased opportunity to compete as well as mixing beginners with more experienced riders. In light of implementing some new strategies, the board is excited about another new venture, this one being the selling of raffle tickets as a new way of raising funds for the organization. As with all things untried some trepidation accompanies this decision. The process will be on trial for the season and up for evaluation thereafter. Aside from this new tactic, selling cattle numbers remains an excellent opportunity for businesses to advertise. Please continue to seek out the support of businesses in your local communities. The season is fast approaching so...brush out the winter hair and leg up your horses. See you in the pen! Regards from your president, Harvey Penner

RATINGS OF PENNERS Under CTCPA rules, team penners are numbered by the Regional Rating Chairman and committee in conjunction with the CTCPA Rating Coordinator. That number is then valid in any Provincial Association in Canada that is a member of the CTCPA. Anyone whose number has been changed from 2010 has been notified by phone by the rating chair. The complete list of ratings is available on the CTCPA website at www.canadianpenning.com. The following rules for eligibility for the MTPA Finals will apply for the 2011 season. • The CTCPA Rating Chairperson and/or the CTCPA Rating Coordinator may request that a rider’s rating be raised or lowered prior to the rider completing half of the local association’s sanctioned shows. • SK Members who have their rating changed after the SK Finals (July) will not have their teams affected for the MTPA Finals Show in September. If you have any questions on the application of the above rules, please do not hesitate to call Rick Andrews, Regional rating Chairperson @726-4850.

2011 CLASSES In 2010 the MTPA implemented a compulsory draw class to the sanctioned events. The goal was to give new penners and beginners an opportunity to compete with other, more experienced members. This pilot was a success and met the stated goals. We will continue with the draw class in 2011where everyone entering a penning will be entered once into the draw class. The draw class will be offered at all pennings with the following rules: Enter maximum 3 times (1 compulsory) Draw will be made to a maximum of a #6 team with every effort to keep teams even Entry will be $21/entry, includes all fees Half back after first run Payout will be according to standard MTPA formula Entries must be made on the Wednesday before the show, no exceptions. Members who wish to introduce new people to our sport should help new folks get their entries in on time All members including the new people must have a current MHC membership We will continue to offer the Open, 10, 7, 5 and Youth classes as in past years.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL Memberships are due! Please fill in the forms and return to Launa Thiessen. If you miss placed the membership form, print a copy from our website. You must be a paid member to receive newsletters and get your rating number for 2011. You will receive your saddle tag with your rating from the CTCPA and all ratings will be listed on the website. Horse Council membership is due by March 15th. You must renew this yourself and send your MHC number to Launa. You should receive a renewal form directly from MHC if you were a member in 2010. Currently the 2011 membership form is available on their website www.manitobahorsecouncil.ca . You MUST be a MHC member to compete. Laurie will be checking for membership when she takes entries and if you don’t have a membership you will not be allowed to compete. NO EXCEPTIONS. This is to protect you and the Association from liability in the event of an accident. If someone wants to “home town” a show and compete without a membership they must still have a MHC membership. Forms will be available at all shows.

Living the Cowboy's DREAM By DARRELL NESBITT

By riding trails, checking cows on a community pasture, or competing in a rodeo arena, a Miniota teenager is living a way of life that in the popular imagination has become synonymous with freedom and rugged individualism. Aaron Lee owes a lot of his success and drive for the cowboy way to a special adult in his life - Zane Fredbjornson, manager of the Wallace PFRA Community Pasture. "Drawn into the cowboy heritage - thanks to my step dad - I have come to learn it's a great lifestyle through many facets over the years," said Lee. "I'm blessed to be able to ride and rope at home and on the road, sharing quality time with Zane, along with my mom Michelle, and sisters, Samantha and Jacey. Lee craved to become involved in the sport, thanks to standing in the shadows watching Fredbjornson, a rodeo competitor himself, chalk up wins in various associations. Since joining the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA) six years ago, the Birtle Collegiate Institute grade 12 student has tried his hand at goat tying, breakaway roping, ribbon roping, chute doggin', team roping and tie down roping, with the latter two still among the senior high timed events fancied. Joining in 2004, participation not only lent itself in assisting the marketing of the new Junior High Division on a provincial level but also nationally. A photograph of Lee chute doggin' (wrestling a steer) appeared on the front cover of the National High School Rodeo Association magazine 'The Times' and aided in the promotion of the inaugural National Junior Finals Rodeo in New Mexico. Thus far, he hasn't competed at the National Finals but in 2009, was fortunate to be part of Team Manitoba to travel to the Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Williams Lake, BC. "It was an amazing experience, traveling out with a great group of rodeo families, we made it a great holiday," said Lee. "Placing second overall with my team roping partner Layne Smith of Oak Lake was a great feeling and an extra special memory of the trip out west." With Manitoba hosting the Canadians this year once again in basically my backyard - Virden - it would be awesome to be on the team, added Lee. Mentorship "While eight-time world champion, Speed Williams is my favorite rodeo competitor, hands down when it comes to having an exceptional roping mentor I must tip my hat to Zane," commented the 17-year-old, who also keeps in shape playing hockey. "Spending

countless hours together, roping fake or live steers, tips are always freely given, which has brought forth success as a competitor." The help, the knowledge and the pats on the back over the years haven't gone unnoticed. Putting a positive spin on the friendships gained no matter the avenue Manitoba Team Roping Association, Heartland Rodeo Association, Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association or the MHSRA - Lee had this to say. "I hope that someday I will be somebody's mentor ... helping young people the same way in how all the adults and friends have aided me as a person and in my roping abilities." And roping abilities come in handy on the range. Much like feedlot pen riders, majority of the work on a community pasture is done on horseback, checking producer-owned cattle from May to October. This summer, Lee will be in the saddle at the McAuley PFRA, doing what he loves. As an avid horseman he may also be found over the summer working

with the Belgian draft horse breed at his uncle Tom Lane's place near Birtle. Not wanting to put a guess on how many loops have been thrown over the years, Lee believes the key ingredients to successful team roping events is to draw good cattle, to be able to score the animal drawn in a manner that won't break the barrier, and be able to rope the steer left at a 90 degree angle, which will allow a heeling partner to rope the two back feet. As a team roper, where teamwork between the two contestants roping together and teamwork between the roper and his horse are vital components, Lee has tried his hand both as a header and heeler. No matter the end of the steer, he has seen success. "Two extra special moments thus far being involved in the MHSRA have come through with a lariat in my hand," stated Lee, who is aiming to be attending a rodeo college in the United States or Alberta in the fall of 2011. "In my inaugural year as a junior, I won the year-end champion heeler title in the form of a belt buckle kindly do-

nated by Zane's family in memory of his dad that meant a lot to me. The second was last year, when through great support from friends, family and wonderful people in my community, myself and Layne placed second overall at the Canadians." Learning curve Among a number of Birtle Collegiate students to be involved in the MHSRA over the years, Lee feels the association is more than about the sport of rodeo - it's family! Blending as one, male and female students from grade 6 to 12, learn as they go, climb the ladder of success at their own pace, and along the way have an opportunity to obtain scholarships for post-secondary education and future goals. "I'm proud to be a member of the MHSRA," Lee stated boldly. "There is a special bond between everyone involved from the host community to the stock contractor to the competitor, working together to showcase what high school rodeo truly stands for. For that I extend thanks to all involved in making it a successful association." Darrell Nesbitt writes from Shoal Lake, Manitoba.
