Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing: EMDR One of the most revolutionary processes to come along in the field of psychotherapy is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short.

This process was developed in the early 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, while she was working at the V.A. She discovered that a series of eye movements could help people overcome trauma more quickly and more effectively than ever before. At that time, it was not known how EMDR worked, but more research has been done on EMDR than probably any other psychotherapy. If Dr. Shapiro had not had the wisdom to do a tremendous amount of research to establish its validity, EMDR would probably never have been accepted by the psychological and psychiatric communities.

Instead, it is now being used around the world as a treatment for trauma of all kinds, small and large. And its results are stable and long term.

EMDR is very helpful for children and adolescents, as well as adults. A very readable book which clearly demonstrates the use of EMDR with adults is Emotional Healing at Warp Speed by Dr. David Grand, who went on to use EMDR for other purposes, such as cultivating people’s creativity.

Making It Easier To Reach That Destination Using A Trust

Now that the holidays are behind us, we are already starting to look back with fondness at families traveling long distances to see and bond with one another. We may not all look forward to getting on an airplane, or car, or train, but we generally look forward to what’s at the end of that day of travel: the destination and family!

Some of the time, the expense of traveling with family members limits some family members from participating, and so a parent or grandparent may help subsidize that cost.

Is there a way to make it easier to reach that destination using a trust?

Yes. A trust may be created with a travel provision to provide that the funds could only be utilized for travel by the beneficiaries. Here’s a fictionalized example: Jeannette’s parents came to America when she was a child. The family kept in close touch with their European relatives, and two of Jeannette’s children settled there.

To facilitate family reunions, one year Jeannette announced that she would provide $25,000 every year to help defray travel expenses. Some years the gettogether was in the U.S., some years in Europe, but each year the $25,000 would cover the transatlantic airfares plus incidental expenses for the extended family. The reunions became so important to the family that Jeanette built them into her estate plan.

At her death an irrevocable trust was created with the express purpose of funding family travels.

Though it was one part of the overall plan, this additional provision would ensure that this tradition continues for many years to come.

Why not just give them the money, and let them decide?

The largest reason to favor a trust over a direct gift is to direct the inheritance toward creating a specific experience or memories, and there are many ways travel can be a factor. Your impact would continue through the experiences directly tied to your wishes.

Such experiences could include creating the opportunity for children to connect with their heritage or religion, study abroad, or even promote doing philanthropic work in another country. Another great use of leaving an inheritance for travel could be to provide for travel expenses if the family members are separated into different states or countries, designating a way to have family reunions, relieving the burden of paying for flights and tension that comes with it.

Perhaps your beneficiaries are workaholics, and you want to make sure they reduce their anxiety levels and take a break so you designate places you’ve been inspired by—such as the Grand Canyon— and a fund that encourages them to share in that experience.

Can the trust designate the use of funds toward other goals?

That depends entirely on the values of the trust creator, and what is set forth in the terms of the trust. Trusts are created so that the desires and values of the creator are respected. Dizziness and Balance Disorders With the ever increasing elderly population, dizziness is becoming a much more widespread and common concern. We will all experience dizziness at some time or another throughout our lives. However, it is important to understand when symptoms of dizziness require further medical attention.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM PATIENTS WITH DIZZINESS: 1. What is dizziness? Dizziness is a generalized term suggesting a sense of unsteadiness or lightheadedness. A feeling of being in a fog or the sense of passing out are our sense of balance is maintained by a very complex interaction among several components of our nervous system, including: • • • • If any one of these factors is diseased or the interaction between these individual parts is causing an individual’s dizziness.

2. What are the causes of dizziness? Dizziness and vertigo can be caused by a wide variety of disorders, including inner ear infections such as labyrinthitis, inner ear disorders such as Meniere’s disease, cardiac conditions, anemia, diabetes or low blood sugar, brain and/ or spinal cord injury, migraine headaches, severe sinus infections, meningitis, poor circulation and hardening of the arteries, stroke, high fever, visual disorders and severe anxiety.

Additionally, certain medications or interactions between medications can often cause

lightheadedness, dizziness and sometimes syncope.

3. What do I do if I develop dizziness? Because dizziness can be is generally recommended that one seek immediate medical attention when experiencing dizziness, particularly if the episodes are recurrent, prolonged or severe. Calling 911, reporting to the nearest emergency room or, at minimum, discussing the situation with your primary care physician is strongly recommended. On many occasions, patients will be referred to an ear, nose and throat physician (otolaryngologist) for consultation.

4. What is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): common form of dizziness and occurs frequently in the elderly population. Most typically, BPPV is described as a spinning sensation and occurs with an abrupt change in body position. In many cases, the initial onset of symptoms occurs when rolling over or getting out

Preventing Kidney Stones

I

f you or someone you know has ever passed a kidney stone, then you know the pain is of epic proportions. The pain is severe because the kidney is a highly sensitive organ. When a stone blocks the normal flow of urine through the urinary tract, the backed up urine can put incredible pressure on the kidney, which results in agonizing pain. The discomfort also results from the tissue surrounding the kidney, called the capsule, which contains nerve fibers that can also transmit pain.

Studies have shown that one in ten people will have a kidney stone over the course of their life and the rate of occurrence is actually on the rise in this country. The good news is that there are certain measures you can take to prevent the formation of stones and it can be helpful to isolate the conditions that support their formation.

Usually, larger stones are less likely to pass and will block the urinary tract. It is important to note that the size of the stone is not always proportional to the degree of pain. Large stones can remain in the kidney silent and not cause an obstruction and a small stone can pass without causing pain as long as it does not create a blockage.

Nephrology

If you suspect that there is something wrong with your kidneys, it’s best to act now before it’s too late. Some common disorders we treat include hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones, chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, hematuria, proteinuria dialysis, and more.

Interestingly enough, there have been several cases reported where stones have been present for years without causing a problem. However, once the stone obstructs the ureters, severe pain is sure to follow. Since most stones have very sharp edges they can draw blood into the urine while being hung up in the bladder tunnel. If you ever notice blood when urinating, be sure and call your physician.

There are a myriad of extenuating factors, which can cause people to be prone to stones.

Some folks lack specific chemicals in the urine or suffer from high blood pressure.

Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity can also increase your risk. Other risks include poor eating habits like binge eating or eating late at nigh can all make the urine more acidic, which can lead to stones.

What Can You Do?

One of the most important things you can do to prevent the onset of stones is to drink plenty of water. This acts to dilute the substances in the urine that can lead to stones.

Too little calcium can cause oxalate levels to rise and cause kidney stones. Try and correlate the amount of calcium you take in with your age.

What To Expect After A Total Knee Replacement – A Physical Therapy Perspective Written by: Joel Maietta, DPT

Does the idea of a Total Knee Replacement scare you?

While the thought of having a total knee replacement sounds daunting and arduous, there are many misconceptions regarding rehabilitation following the surgery. Often people run (not literally) from the idea of having this surgery because they hear horror stories of painful therapy sessions and a long grueling recovery period. However, with proper education, motivation, and the guidance of a skilled rehabilitation team, recovery should be nothing to worry about.

Why do people need Total Knee Replacements?

The primary reason people require a total knee replacement is to rid their knee of a painful condition called Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis develops when the smooth cartilage that cushions your joint starts to break down resulting in stiffness, pain, and that “grinding” sensation you feel in your knee. Unfortunately, our bodies are unable to reproduce adequate cartilage to repair the lost cushioning. As a result, a surgeon must often times perform surgery to replace these painful joint surfaces with artificial materials.

This allows for the return of smooth, pain-free motion in your knee.

What does rehabilitation consist of after a Total Knee Replacement?

The key to a successful recovery is early exercise and activity to facilitate the healing process and prevent stiffness in the knee. Our bodies are amazing healers and immediately start repairing following the surgery with the production of scar tissue. However, movement directs the alignment of this new scar tissue, so the earlier and more often you begin moving, the easier your recovery will be! Therefore, the rehabilitation process begins right away in the hospital following surgery when a skilled physical therapist begins showing you the proper technique for getting out of bed, getting up from chairs, and even walking with the use of a walker! Many are surprised that these once painful activities now feel easier and more comfortable!

Once the medical staff and rehabilitation team determine you can move around safely and have proper support at home you will be discharged from the hospital. Most people only end up staying in the hospital for a few days. In some cases, additional medical monitoring is needed and you may be placed in a rehabilitation hospital in which you will receive guided Physical and Occupational Therapy while under the supervision of doctors and nurses. This stay usually lasts a few days to a week and then you are allowed to return to your household.

Once you have made it back to your home, your doctor may or may not request a therapist visit your home for a few days to continue with exercises and assist with daily activity training. Following a few home therapy sessions your doctor will direct you to begin Outpatient Physical Therapy at a facility of your choice.

How do I choose where to go for Physical Therapy following a Total Knee Replacement?

When choosing a facility for this phase of rehabilitation, it is important to research your options by talking to doctors and previous patients to find the place that is right for you. Outpatient Physical Therapy is your final step to a full recovery and also the longest step. That being said, it is important to find a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and where all your goals and needs will be heard and attended to.

What should I expect with my Outpatient Rehabilitation following a Total Knee Replacement?

You will be spending 2-3 days a week in physical therapy for sessions lasting around one hour, however it is expected that you perform home exercises daily because the time spent in therapy alone is not enough for a full and functional recovery. In the facility, a skilled Physical Therapist will work with you to further improve your ability to straighten and bend your knee as well as progress the strength of your whole leg. The greatest gift therapists have is our hands and we have been educated and trained on specific techniques to improve the mobility of your knee to allow you to move with the least amount of pain possible. Once your mobility and strength start to improve, other activities are included to improve your ability to walk without any assistive devices as well as exercises to allow you to walk up and down stairs. Most people are able to walk without a cane or walker as early as 4-6 weeks after their surgery! Your Therapist will also discuss any additional goals you may have including returning to activities such as golf, tennis, and swimming. These are all realistic goals which can be attained with proper guidance by your Therapist.

CW: Please explain the importance of treating the emotional part of recovery.

Mike: It is essential to address all aspects of recovery and we believe strongly in the continuity of care, meaning pairing every patient with one therapist. This allows the therapist to establish a strong bond with their patients and address any emotional barriers of recovery. Emotional barriers are important because we believe there is a direct correlation between chronic pain and depression. If the mental part is not addressed, recovery will be unsuccessful or short lived.

CW: What are some positive changes you have seen in the field in the last ten years?

Mike: There has been great progress in the manual (literally, hands-on) approaches used by physical therapists over the last ten years. Addressing soft tissue through Instrument Assisted Mobilization (IASTM) as well as improving range of motion through joint mobilization is essential to achieving optimal

Why We Shouldn’t Forget about the Sperm!

Oftentimes, a couple experiencing difficulty trying to conceive may presume that the cause of infertility is an inherent problem with the female partner. However, the contribution from the male fertility perspective should not be overlooked.

It is estimated that in 20-40% of couples experiencing difficulties conceiving, a male problem may be a contributing cause, and may be the sole factor in 20% of couples. We must move away from the assumption that the problem stems from the woman, and instead understand the importance of sperm abnormalities and their potential impact on fertility.

Other cases of male infertility can be attributed to poor movement (poor motility) or abnormally shaped sperm (poor morphology). These cases also deserve a thorough evaluation by a urologist. Even with minor changes in sperm number or shape, there is a lower chance of pregnancy, especially when there is a low proportion of normal sperm. With regards to abnormally-shaped sperm, studies suggest there may be an increased association with pregnancy loss.

In a large saucepan over high heat, cook eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, celery and garlic in the oil for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Stir in the vinegar, capers, sugar, salt and pepper to taste.

Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until vegetables are fork tender.

Is It Snoring Or Is It Sleep Apnea?

An interview with Dr. Christine Ally, a renowned sleep apnea doctor.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Many people who snore may not simply be snoring but could be suffering from a more serious health condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Only about 10% of patients with the condition have been diagnosed. It is where a person stops breathing many times throughout the night and is caused by a physical blockage or collapse of the upper airway while asleep resulting in a chronic lack of oxygen to the brain and body. Over time it takes a toll on your body and causes or contributes to other significant and medical problems.

How does it affect our health?

Sleep apnea is called the silent killer and is a very serious condition which should not be taken lightly. If left untreated it damages your cardiovascular system and can cause high blood pressure, heart disease including arrhythmias, rapid heart rate, heart attacks and strokes. Other conditions related to sleep apnea include depression, mood disorders, memory loss, low sex drive, restless leg syndrome and acid reflux or GERD. Studies now show that in some cases a person can decrease their lifespan by as much as a decade if they have untreated sleep apnea.

What symptoms do people with sleep apnea have?

Symptoms depend on the severity of the condition and some patients may show none if their condition is mild, none the less it needs to be treated. The most frequent sign is loud snoring and sometimes gasping for air while sleeping. Other signs include waking frequently at night,

frequent leg movement while sleeping, irritability, lack of focus, loss of memory, morning headaches, day time sleepiness, low sex drive, obesity, chronic exhaustion and lack of energy.

How is Obstructive Sleep Apnea treated?

The most commonly prescribed therapy is CPAP. This is where a patient wears a mask and is hooked up to a machine blowing air continuously to keep the airway open while they are asleep. Most patients do not use CPAP because they find it uncomfortable and inconvenient.

The more successful and compliant treatment is Oral Appliance Therapy.

This is where a mouthpiece is custom made for the patient and it is worn while they sleep to keep the airway open.

How can you help patients?

I have successfully used oral appliances to treat patients with sleep apnea for over 14 years. Some patients need appliances for snoring and others for sleep apnea. They are custom made and are small, comfortable and easy to wear. Patients find them very convenient and they are a safe, simple and effective way of treating sleep apnea. Because of the comfort and convenience of the oral appliance patients are usually very compliant.

What should patients do if they suspect they have sleep apnea or they snore?

Any person who snores loudly should be screened for sleep apnea. I offer a free consult to discuss their concerns and work closely with local physicians to get them tested. If they have sleep apnea, our treatment is very personalized and we will discuss all their options and the best mode of treatment for them. Snake Skin As a snake grows, its skin only expands so much to accommodate what is needed and it is uncomfortable for the snake to stay in skin that is growing tight. Nature has built this periodic shedding into a snake’s life cycle. Snakes, unlike humans, easily embrace the next stage in their lives, and don’t agonize or consider options to avoid stepping away from something that no longer supported it. They don’t worry that there would be nothing underneath the too small skin to cover its bones. They don’t have anxiety about what other snakes might say or think. They just do what they need to do to keep growing and don’t look back. They shed their skin and move on.

Wouldn’t life be easier for humans if we had the snake’s capacity to gracefully embrace change and growth? How many times have we stubbornly continued on a path that was unfulfilling? How often do we ignore the inner voice that calls us to change? Why are we so resistant to shedding a life that stunts us?

The unknown is scary, and change always comes with an unknown. We keep repeating the same limiting patterns because they are familiar. We keep eating the same foods that don’t support our health. We keep writing IOUs to ourselves, promising tomorrow we will do things differently. We will “start to get healthy”. Today, why not cash in one of those IOUs and commit to doing one thing that will actually make a difference, no matter how seemingly small. Drink more water, take a ten minute walk, or eat a salad today. Snack on a piece of fruit instead of chips, take the time to chew your food thoroughly. Do it for the next 30 days. If you miss a day, begin again. Put a reminder on your phone, or on a post-it note on your mirror and dashboard of your car.

What is this?

This is a surgical technique that is performed through very tiny incisions, only a few millimetres long.

This is in contrast to traditional surgery performed through large incisions on the foot. Dr. Baskin offers this technique with advantages over open surgery. Much less soft tissue stripping and dissection is required to gain access to the bone in order to make the corrections. This may alleviate the need for wires, implants, or screws.

No. Very specific training in minimally invasive techniques are required and these training courses have restricted access. A new range of surgical tools, not normally used in traditional open surgery are used and these require a new set of technical skills in order to master the different surgical techniques. This requires training and experience. Not all foot and ankle surgeons perform minimally invasive foot surgery.

Is it for me?

Most people are eligible to have minimally invasive surgery, however it is not for everyone. Some deformities are too large to be corrected using minimally invasive techniques. Tallwoods Care Center Celebrates th Resident’s 108 Birthday

On January 25th, 2019, the staff and residents of Tallwoods Care Center came together to celebrate the 108th birthday of one of their residents.

Hilda Brown is the oldest resident at Tallwoods Care Center and one of the oldest citizens in the state of New Jersey. Hilda was born on January 20, 1911 in Newfoundland, Canada. Hilda is the only living member from her family of 10. Hilda’s mother passed away at a young age, leaving her to help raise her young siblings. In the mid 1940s, Hilda moved to the United States and settled in Fort Lee. She worked as a waitress for more than 40 years, where she was loved and admired by all of her coworkers and customers alike. Hilda retired from her waitress job at the age of 70 and moved to Bayville, NJ. Hilda became an active member of the community and her church. She participated in all church functions, hosted church events and played the organ for church services. She would knit scarves, blankets and hats to be given out to needy members of the church and veterans. Hilda traveled the world with church missionaries, taking her to places as far as Jerusalem, Egypt and Africa. At the age of 88, when most people are enjoying their retirement years, Hilda decided that she wanted to do more for the community. She joined a local senior resident center where she worked as a housekeeper and helped the residents wherever and whenever possible, although most of the residents were a lot younger than she was. In 2014, Hilda came to Tallwoods Care Center, where she currently resides. When asked, “What is the single most important factor to your longevity?” Hilda answers with a smile, “The key to a long life is to be happy, stay positive and keep yourself busy,” adding, “I drink a black coffee every morning and receive excellent care at Tallwoods Care Center.”

The National Women’s History Theme For 2019 Visionary Women: Champions Of Peace & Nonviolence March is National Women’s History Month and every year the National Women’s History Project selects a theme to honor women in history who have made a significant impact in the efforts to improve the lives of women. The theme for 2019 is “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence.” The honorees being recognized in this year’s theme represent women who “have led efforts to end war, violence, and injustice and pioneered the use of nonviolence to change society.” Each and every honoree noted has displayed the ability to provide a voice for social change without the use of violence to get their messages heard across the country.

The 2019 honorees are as follows: Kathy Kelly, Co-Coordinator of Voices for Creative Violence. Kathy Kelly is known as a “peace activist” and is one of the founding members of Voices in the Wilderness. Kathy has displayed that she is a trailblazer for peace and even served a prison sentence for four months. AXELROD PAC PRESENTS “MAMMA MIA!” The Hit Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA

Mamma Mia!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will feature four Broadway veterans, including Matt Bogart (Jersey Boys), when it premieres at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, running March 8-24.

Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with Mamma Mia! The longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history, with nearly 6,000 performances, it has played in 50 countries and inspired two major motion pictures.

This singing and dancing extravaganza is the story of a young woman’s search for her birth father—it features a hilarious web of relationships between a mother, a daughter, three possible dads, and an unforgettable trip down the aisle.

ABBA’s signature 1980s score, including the title song and hits like “The Winner Takes It All,” “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” make Mamma Mia! one of Broadway’s most entertaining musicals of all time. The Axelrod production is the first on the Jersey Shore and is being directed and choreographed by the legendary Barry Ivan.

Artistic Director Andrew DePrisco, whose guidance and vision has transformed the Axelrod PAC into one of the most talked-about professional theaters in the state, is thrilled to welcome Ivan and his team to the production.

A nationally recognized director and choreographer, whose career includes work in the New York theater as well as TV and film, Ivan’s long resume of New York and regional credits includes many of the top theaters in the nation.

Matt Bogart, whose recent appearances on Broadway include leading roles in Jersey Boys, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Miss Saigon, will make his Jersey Shore debut starring as Sam. “We’ve never assembled a cast with so many stars,” said DePrisco. “Matt Bogart is one of the go-to leading men on Broadway, and all three female leads have Broadway credits.”

Playing Sam’s ex-wife, Donna, is Michelle Mallardi, whose Broadway career started in fairy-tale fashion as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Playing Sophie, her daughter, is Sarah Lasko, the Dorothy from the spectacular national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz. Her fiancé, Sky, will be played by a promising University of Michigan actor, Charlie Patterson.

In addition to Mallardi as Donna, her best girlfriends, Tanya and Rosie, will be played by Doreen Montalvo (In the Heights and On Your Feet) and Heather Jane Rolff (Shrek), respectively.

The production team features Broadway lighting designer Paul Miller (Legally Blonde and Amazing Grace), musical supervisor James Cunningham, music director/conductor Garrett Taylor, sound designer D.J. Ultrasounds ... Of The Feet?

Ultrasound imaging is a very common way to image the inside of the body. It is a quick and painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the body. It uses no radiation, which makes it safe enough to use on pregnant women and their unborn babies. Ultrasound technology is also used to image the organs of the abdomen and pelvis as well as to give a clear picture of the blood vessels. More frequently, we are using ultrasounds to take images of the feet.

Q: What can the ultrasound show us in the feet?

A: The ultrasound is excellent at imaging the tendons of the feet. Tendons

are in the ends of muscles that attach to the bone. The tendons surround the foot and this allows us to move the foot in every direction. The tendons can get damaged and cause foot pain. Sometimes surgery needs to be performed to correct a torn tendon.

Ultrasound is also commonly used to image the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is fibrous tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes. The plantar fascia can get inflamed, causing pain usually at the heel. This is called plantar fasciitis. Ultrasound can detect plantar fasciitis and its level of severity.

Ultrasound is a great tool at imaging the Achilles tendon (also called the Achilles heel). This large tendon is located at the back of your heel and attaches to the bone in the back of your foot. It can become inflamed

and painful (called Achilles tendinitis). In some cases, the Achilles tendon can tear. Depending on how badly the tendon is ruptured, it may require surgery to repair.

Q: What else besides tendons can the ultrasound image?

A: Anything abnormal in the soft tissue can be seen by ultrasound. It can be

used to detect collections of fluid, such as pools of blood from bruising or an abscess from an infection.

There is a condition called Morton’s neuroma. This occurs when there is thickening of tissue around the nerves. This is located at the balls of your feet, usually at the level of the third and fourth toes. This can be very painful. Many patients describe the sensation of having a rock in their shoe.

An ultrasound examination can usually find a Morton’s neuroma and help guide the surgeon to remove it.

Q: Can the ultrasound see the bone of the foot? Can it see arthritis?

A: Unfortunately, ultrasound is limited in imaging bones. The dense calcium

of bone blocks the sounds waves and we only see a shadow. That is why a foot ultrasound is often interpreted with a foot x-ray.

Q: How is the test performed?

A: The shoes and socks are removed.

The patient is then asked to either lie down on a table or sit with both feet dangling off the table. Warm gel is applied to the foot and the technologist uses the ultrasound probe to take pictures of the area of concern.

Tips To Improve Your Sleep, Tonight

D

id you awaken this morning feeling well rested? Or feeling like you were still in a state of sleep but had to get up and get moving? If you answered ‘yes’ to the latter, there is good news. You can take some simple steps to have a good night of sleep—starting tonight!

Your daily sleep practices and habits, known as “sleep hygiene,” play an important role in whether you are going to have a restless night or restful slumber. Falling asleep generally occurs on a continuum, gradually over time—not as an abrupt transition. In other words, it doesn’t work like an on-off flip switch, but more like a dimmer, transitioning from one good state to another.

And even if you don’t have trouble getting your ZZZ’s, these influences can prevent developing future unhealthy sleep issues.

praying, meditating, preparing for the morning, or having quiet time. Avoid stimulating or stressful activities like working late on projects for home or work, heated discussions or things that send you into a “fight or flight” mode. Triggering your body and mind to be awake is the opposite of where you want to go, which is powering down to help transition—lulling your body and mind—to sleep and quality slumber.

• Dim the lights. As the light of day breaks, your retinas sense

sunlight and send signals to suppress the release of melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep. Along with the natural light of day, artificial light also has the same effect on your body, continuing to inhibit melatonin release.

And yes, that includes light from televisions, computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Turning down the lights helps our body release melatonin, which makes us sleepy when it becomes dark at nighttime. So as you get closer to your chosen bedtime, dim all the lights in your home. And, today, home LED lighting can help to emit less and less blue light, which also has been found effective in allowing you to doze off and sleep well throughout the night.

In addition to unplugging and powering down our technology, consider using heavy curtains, blackout shades, or an eye mask to enhance melatonin production.

The National Sleep Foundation’s Bedroom Research found that respondents rated elements of comfort in their bedroom having the greatest impact on their sleep as follows: comfort of their mattress (93%) and pillows (91%); the feel of the sheets and bedding (85%); sleeping on sheets with a fresh scent (78%); a quiet (74%) and dark room (73%); temperature (69%); and fresh air free of allergens (63%). The goal is to optimize these.

Additionally, our body has an internal thermostat that drops a degree or two at the initiation of sleep. It is believed that this “cooling off” induces sleep. As a result, if your room is too warm or too cold, it makes it more challenging to doze off. Aim for a bedroom temp of 60 to 67oF.

• Stay on schedule. Going to sleep and waking up at the same

time every day—even on weekends—is crucial for setting your body’s internal clock (your circadian rhythm). Staying consistent also means that the quality of your sleep will be better.

• Watch what you eat and drink, and when. Eating

heavy close to bedtime can disrupt your sleep. The best practice is to eat lightly several hours before your designated bedtime to avoid discomfort that can make it hard for your body to settle and relax. And spicy foods can also cause heartburn, all too often interfering with sleep.

Nicotine is a stimulant that increases blood pressure and heart rate, the opposite of rest and relaxation. And, too, it can cause you to wake up earlier than the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep needed. This is because smokers often experience withdrawal symptoms before it’s time to rise and shine.

Caffeine is a stimulant that takes time to wear off and may make it difficult for you to fall (and stay) asleep. Avoid caffeine (including teas, sodas, energy drinks and caffeinated food items, like chocolate) for at least 6 hours before bedtime.

And while alcohol may initially make you feel sleepy, it lowers the quality of your sleep, interfering with the deeper, restorative stages of your sleep.

Experts agree it is best not to drink it in the late evening.

• Think comfort for sleeping. In our bedroom, bedtime comfort is not just a luxury, it is critically important to the quality of our sleep. Research shows that the conditions of our bedroom—sights, sounds, feelings, textures, temperature and even smells—as well as our comfort, all can have a direct impact on our ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up feeling well rested, fresh and energized.

“N

ormalcy” is defined as being within certain limits that define the range of normal functioning. How we each come to define those limits over time is a whole other story.

For many of the people I work with, a “normal” day starts at 8 am, when they are awakened by a cacophony of debt collectors ringing their house phone and/or cell phone, harassing them for money they simply do not have. A normal day may include a similar call made to their workplace, or in some cases a neighbor or relative. A normal day usually ends with a trip to the mailbox, where various forms of threats against one’s home, wages and belongings await. Of course, all of the aforementioned say nothing of the other daily stresses that we all know broaden our limits of normalcy by the day.

There is a breaking point for everyone. The symptoms of approaching this breaking point can manifest in any number of emotional and physical ways, all of which I have heard and seen in my daily interactions with clients. The question is whether or not a person can identify these symptoms and be proactive in addressing them, so that the limits of normalcy can, once again, become more defined.

My answer to anyone seeking to redefine these limits is simple: it is never too late, and it is never too early to investigate one’s options. Bankruptcy is no longer a “four-letter” word (alas, math was not my finest subject in school).

Rather, it stands for a fresh start - an opportunity to redefine the normalcy in your own life.

Bankruptcy is not for everyone. However, understanding what it encompasses and whether or not it is an option for you takes nothing more than being proactive. It is the will to move forward that one must find within themselves to take that next step of investigating their options. I hope this article proves helpful in realizing that a new normalcy is always within reach.

Serves 4

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed and rolled out into a 14in square.

4 boneless chicken breasts, cooked 1/3 cup herbed soft cheese 1/4 cup fresh parsley , chopped 1 large egg Optional ingredients-chopped spinach, diced roasted red peppers, additional cheese, etc.

Preheat the oven to 400 degress.

Roll out puff pastry, cut into four equal sized pieces.

Place 1 1/2 tablesoons of herbed cheese in the center of each piece.

Top herbed cheese with a chicken breast and then chopped parsley Next, fold the corners of the pastry over the chicken breast.

Place chicken pastry seam side down on a baking sheet covered in parchement.

Lightly brush the top with a whisked egg.

Bake for 20-25minutes or until crust is golden brown.

After joining his father’s law practice in 2004, his own knowledge and expertise in the field grew. OCW: Why did you select bankruptcy law as your specialty?

Daniel Straffi: I enjoy bankruptcy work because I am able to truly set a course for navigating clients from what is usually the most difficult time in their lives to a path of hope and rebuilding.

OCW: What are the most challenging aspects of your profession?

Daniel Straffi: There are many challenging aspects to the legal profession. As any attorney will attest, time management usually requires the most work and attention.

OCW: What are your top three tips for financial “health” for young families?

Daniel Straffi: My advice to any young family starting out is to communicate with each other about your respective finances. Openness about spending, bills, and income can help find or address problems before they become too difficult. With good communication comes greater financial health in terms of budgeting and spending.

OCW: What are the primary reasons the average person files for bankruptcy?

Daniel Straffi: The majority of people I represent are hard working individuals accustomed to paying their bills. With the cost of living in the state of New Jersey being so high, it does not take much to fall behind. The primary reasons for filing bankruptcy are loss of income, medical reasons and divorce or separation.

OCW: What are the average fears or anxieties surrounding filing for bankruptcy?

Daniel Straffi: Most clients are very concerned with the effect a bankruptcy will have on their credit. They view it as an “end” rather than (what it is) a “new beginning.” It is the intent of the courts to provide the honest debtor with a fresh start. This includes the ability to rebuild one’s credit over time.

OCW: Why is there so much incorrect information out there about bankruptcy?

Daniel Straffi: Unfortunately some people wait too long to get accurate information they need from a reputable attorney. Some fall prey to the misinformation spread by debt consolidation companies, banks or other creditors that have an interest in preventing debtors from obtaining the powerful relief that bankruptcy can provide.

OCW: How long will the “average” bankruptcy be on a person’s credit report?

Daniel Straffi: Usually it will be on a credit report for a period of ten years. Generally speaking, it takes folks about two years to rebuild their credit.

In the interim, the cash that will be freed up from not having to pay the exorbitant minimum fees from credit cards will help most debtors operate their households while simultaneously rebuilding their credit.

OCW: Please tell us about your family .

Daniel Straffi: I have been married since 2002 to my wife, Danielle. My wife is an art therapist with a private practice in Mt. Laurel. We reside in Medford, with our 13-year-old daughter, Emma, dog, Tinkerbell, and guinea pig, Scarlet. For the record, I was not involved in the naming of said pets, nor is the guinea pig red in color.

Daniel Straffi, Jr. was admitted to practice in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as the District Court of New Jersey in 2001. A graduate of Boston College in 1998 and Rutgers-Camden School of Law in 2011, he began his legal career in 2001 serving as a judicial law clerk for the presiding judge of Family Law in Mercer County. In 2004, he joined his father’s law practice.

He has focused his practice on representing individuals and businesses in the areas of bankruptcy, divorce and criminal defense.

He is further an active member of the NJ and Ocean County Bar Associations.

• 1/4 cup butter, softened • 1/2 package cream cheese • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar • 2 1/2 cups flaked coconut • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

1. In a medium bowl, beat the butter and cream cheese together until smooth.

2. Add the vanilla and confectioners’ sugar; beat until smooth.

3. Using your hands, if necessary, mix in the coconut.

Roll into balls or potato shapes and roll in the cinnamon.

4. Place onto a cookie sheet and chill to set. If desired, roll potatoes in cinnamon again for darker color.

Are You Ready For Shedding Season?

All body cells, skin and hair cells are constantly renewed.

New hairs replace those that fall out on a daily basis. Humans lose a lot of hair during a certain time of the year, which is similar to the shedding season for animals: Fall – mid September to mid November; Spring – mid March to mid May. This hair loss may be temporarily heavier (max 3 months). During transitions between seasons, it is normal to see more loss of hair than at other times. The falling hairs are replaced by new hairs.

The Truth About Poop: Constipation & Hydrotherapy by

Do you suffer from constipation on a regular basis? It’s not fun. And you’re not alone! Over four million people suffer from constipation in the United States, and roughly two million doctor visits a year make it one of the most common gastrointestinal issues today. Almost everyone, at one time, has been constipated.

Constipation is a condition in which it is difficult, and even painful, to have a bowel movement. People suffering from constipation complain of hard or pellet-like stools, fewer than 3 bowel movements per week and straining with bowel movements. They normally feel bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. The condition is often considered temporary and non-threatening; however, if it is undiagnosed or left untreated, it can lead to many other health issues.

Medical problems that are caused by constipation include headaches, fatigue, moodiness and depression, hemorrhoids, anal fissures or tears, gas, lower back pain, skin problems, body odor, indigestion and abdominal pains.

Accumulated toxins may be absorbed into the system and over time may stress the organs of elimination, which are the liver, kidneys, skin, and large intestine. The toxins move around and around in the lymph system and blood, slowly causing auto-intoxication, which then leads to disease.

Traditionally, doctors typically prescribe laxatives, drugs or surgery for constipation relief. These methods will only temporarily treat the symptoms and there are many dangerous and harmful side effects that you may experience with these treatments.

Why Cord Blood Banking?

My name is Maureen Lynn and I am a local mother of four teenagers. I have over 20 years of nursing experience in womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health. I grew up in Fair Haven and reside in Red Bank. Mary Street is a mother of two young children and is from Toms River. Mary had been working as a Clinical Field Specialist for Natera, a genetic lab, when we met. She was the representative who called on the midwife practice where I worked and coordinated non-invasive prenatal screening (Panorama) and carrier screening for my patient population.

We continued to work together when I accepted a position as a nurse manager for another OB/GYN practice, and eventually Mary made me aware of a position in Natera that sparked my interest. I was hired last year as an Account Service Representative with Natera, and Mary and I work closely to service the prenatal population in Monmouth County, and parts of Ocean and Middlesex Counties.

One part of my position that I am extremely passionate about is to promote Evercord, our cord blood banking division in Natera. Cord blood and tissue are valuable, natural resources of stem cells that contain powerful healing capabilities.

The cells in cord blood act like a repair kit and can help to heal and restore tissues and replenish cells. When you cryogenically freeze newborn stem cells, it preserves them while they are young and untouched. These cells can be beneficial to future medical therapies. Newborn stem cells have been used in more than 35,000 transplants worldwide for therapies that treat nearly 80 diseases. Most people associate stem cells with only transplants, but currently, there are studies going on that show great improvements in children with autism and cerebral palsy after stem cell infusions.

Science is progressing, and the regenerative abilities of newborn stem cells are also being evaluated in conditions like diabetes, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

We offer monthly free Evercord dinners that give parents the opportunity to enjoy a nice dinner and meet some other expectant parents, all while learning all there is to know about cord blood banking and this great family investment. Our events are fun, interactive, and informative, and we always have an experienced medical provider speaking to the attendees along with staff from Natera who are well versed in Evercord. Patients are generally so thankful for the education as they decide if they will bank their babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cord blood, and usually are very happy with the pricing, payment plans, and discounts they receive for attending our dinner event.

Natera really does make cord blood banking an attainable, affordable option, which surprises most attendees.

Our dinners are monthly, alternating southern and northern Monmouth County locations. Our next event is March 27, 2019 at Salt Creek Grill in Rumson. Irina L. Weil, MD, DABFM, is an integrative medicine physician at Hackensack Meridian Integrative Health & Medicine. Dr. Weil graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in Biology and Spanish. She received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. A board-certified physician who practiced radiology for 13 years in Ocean County, Dr. Mann completed her training in radiology at UMDNJ-University Hospital and her fellowship in neuroradiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 2013, Dr. Mann had a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction while performing a procedure on a patient and realized she would be unable to continue in her beloved specialty without placing herself at risk. After recovering from this near-death experience, she began the journey towards wellness and decided that her newfound knowledge could help others dealing with chronic diseases. Women Of Ocean County Carolyn Peters, RN, BSN Office Manager, Ocean Otolaryngology Associates Carolyn graduated nursing school from Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. She then secured a job as an RN at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. While working in the ENT unit, she was able to obtain her BSN at TJU School of Nursing.

She met her husband, Otolaryngologist Dr. Bruce Peters, and in 1997 opened his private practice in Ocean County.

Kathleen is a graduate of Toms River North and earned three Associate Degrees from Ocean County College, including Criminal Justice, Business Administration, and Paralegal Studies. Rebecca Kolas is both a Certified Lice Technician and Owner of Lice Lifters of Ocean County in Toms River, which opened in August 2016 and serves Ocean, Monmouth and Atlantic Counties as the premier lice removal company.
