Spring Decorating

As I’m writing this article, snow is lying on the ground, so it’s hard to imagine Spring is around the corner. But before we know it, we will be frantic to start our Spring cleaning. Besides the obvious, such as power-washing, retouching paint, and getting your carpets cleaned, there are tons of great techniques you can implement to create a more updated home.

This may seem obvious to some readers, but a lot of people are still hesitant to buy a houseplant because of the maintenance. However, they provide not only a natural element, but they lower your risk for illness while providing cleaner air and boosting your mood. There is nothing more beautiful than a fig tree, areca palm, or peace lily, but my favorite houseplant is the fiddle leaf fig because of its glossy, leathery foliage and its large size. Place this tree in a corner along with a beautiful woven basket and you have just made your home happier and cleaner. Which brings me to my next must-have for Spring: a beautiful, colorful woven basket. They are cost-effective and can truly be used for many things. Put one in your living room and fill it with magazines, or put blankets in them. I use them for pots for my indoor plants and have even put my kids’ sandals and sneakers in them to hide the clutter. Two home design changes that are pricier but leave a huge impact are redoing your countertops in your kitchen and placing trim in your downstairs. Marble is having a moment because nothing beats the classic natural beauty of marble. However, marble isn’t for everyone due to its dollar sign and high maintenance. If you want countertops that will be low maintance but still have the marble appeal, go for quartz, which is stain-, scratch-, heat- and impact-resistant. Lastly, trim is my favorite thing to put into a home because it instantly transforms the room and immediately makes the room architecturally interesting. Whether you like board and batten, shiplap, or just simple wainscot, this design impact will be worth the money you shell out.
