Jacque’s Note

Welcome to 2014!! The unpredictability of Georgia winter came home this week. With a slight weather related delay, we are ready to roll! As always, each year brings great times and challenges. Here’s to a New Year that is equal to the Promises our students and staff have within them! January is such an anticipatory month, isn’t it? We all have to be ready for what comes! I am ready for some Big Times! What is coming for us…and coming fast…is Homecoming! It is always an exciting event and full of old friends and familiar faces! This year we are separating the middle school competition from the HS so we do not have such a long day. Check the calendar and plan to party with us! I encourage you to participate in every event! TCS celebrates all of our students and the camaraderie established year to year is palpable! We usually have a few weeks to prepare families and new staff for a school closure! Not this year. Our system of using FB, Twitter, email and phone calls appears to have worked well but the decision to close school is never simple or easy. We take a very serious approach to risk management and look at the big picture. Since the local news is dominated by extreme weather stories and county school systems must deal with an enormous number of students and situations, we approach inclement weather with careful assessment. As an independent school, our situation is unique. Although we are located in Fulton County, our kids come from many different counties. The vast majority of our students come by car. We have no transportation system to worry about. Only a handful of students walk or ride public transportation. Our buildings are not massive energy drains. Our supervision is responsive. Our parents have choices. Our students have their lesson plans ahead of time and can plan ahead for absences. Safety is our first priority. We do not want anyone endangered coming to school or due to ice on campus. To that end, if a county is closed for travel advisory conditions, the students in that county are not expected to come to school. They simply call and inform us of their situation. If Fulton County is closed due to travel conditions, we are automatically closed. In any case, if a parent does not think it is wise to send their child to school, they have the prerogative to keep them at home. If, however, counties or large school systems are closed due to inadequate heating or car pool issues, TCS will remain open. As long as our buildings are heated and the water is flowing, we can keep our kids warm and safe. The distance between classes is not dangerous if our students are dressed for the weather. Since most of our parents are working and having their teen stay at home unattended may not be wise, we believe they are best managed at school. Communicating our decision is the other area for potential confusion. Once a decision is made, we inform our staff and families as soon as possible. Messages on our voicemail, website, the local media, and personal phone calls are implemented as quickly as possible. We appreciate the feedback we received this week from those who were in disagreement and those in support of having school open on Tuesday. It is just that communication that forms our team and enables us to best serve our families. We all look forward to the activities and celebrations that this new semester brings! Thank you for your part in making the TCS experience one of excellence and achievement!
