Cuba’s melancholic ruins with a different, more modern face. In Juragua, a fallen city built from scratch in the 1980s near Cuba’s first nuclear power plant - a project that was scrapped after the fall of the Soviet Union - three generations of Cuban men are stuck living together in a small workers’ apartment. Crushed by frustration and a lack of hope, they are constantly searching for something in the past in order to anchor the present. Their memories are illustrated with footage from old reports on Cuban television in which propagandistic enthusiasm lends an almost erotic aura to the atomic project.

Against all odds she lands an internship at a horse race track. In the stable she gets to know the troubled teenager Emma, and a strong friendship develops between the two women. When Emma slips deeper into her own drug abuse, Wanja decides to rescue her.
