The Community House is one of the only nonprofit (501C3) organizations that delivers both quality recreation and social services that are deeply rooted in the community. We make a difference in the lives of thousands of families and individuals that need local opportunities for culture, athletics, counseling, therapy, learning, and building friendships and community connections. Based in Hinsdale and serving the surrounding communities, The Community House staff is dedicated to offering a welcoming, warm environment and programs to improve the social, physical, and emotional well-being of our users. Our Mission: Building community through excellence and innovation in socially relevant programs. How are we funded? The Community House does not receive tax support and depends upon generous support from the United Way, charitable gifts, program and rental fees, and volunteer efforts to underwrite services and defray operation costs. The Community House is grateful to the many generous community volunteers and contributors who share their time, talent and financial gifts each year!

Parents are often concerned about going on play dates because they are uncertain about how their child may or may not respond. Let’s Play will focus on enhancing reciprocal play skills to enrich each child’s social development. Our Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor will facilitate positive interactions between each child so that they can practice new skills related to cooperation, following directions, sharing, taking turns, and developing social/emotional language in a safe and supportive environment. Therapy strategies will include the use of interactive games, role playing, modeling and using effective communication strategies and expressing feelings/emotions appropriately.

“Let’s Hang Out!” Club Ages 7-10, 10-13 and 14-17 Being a kid is supposed to be a fun time. Yet, there are challenges as our kids learn all the subtle social rules necessary to have relationships. Their days are filled with opportunities to practice these skills; however, they struggle to understand them. Our Licensed Professional Counselor will work with the participants on understanding and practicing social interactions such as taking turns, making eye contact, emotional regulation, and conversational skills. Children will practice their skills in the context of fun, age-appropriate activities and life skills. Our goal is for these kids to develop and practice these skills and generalize them to their everyday life.

Go Girls!

Charlie’s Gift

Ages 10-13 Being a girl can be tons of fun! It can also offer many challenges as our girls get older. Go Girls! Is a group designed for girls to get together and talk, play games, and practice some of those subtle social cues that can be so difficult to learn. It is a chance for our girls to be themselves and just “hang out”. Our licensed Professional Counselor will work with the group on understanding and role playing social interactions, specifically having conversations. We will focus on initiating conversation, staying on topic, having reciprocal conversations, and reading body language. The girls will practice these skills in a safe environment and in the context of fun, age-appropriate activities. The goal of the group is for the girls to develop these skills and generalize them to their everyday life.

“Let’s Go Out” Ages 12-16 This group will meet once a month in a different location in our community. We will do a variety of activities such as bowling, going out for pizza, and miniature golf to practice our social skills. So many of our kids are not interested in after school sports activities, but this is a great way for our kids to be social and do things they normally wouldn’t do. We will be focusing on developing social skills such as reciprocal conversations, taking turns, knowing when it’s your turn to talk, and listening skills. Our Licensed Professional Counselor will facilitate the group and coordinate the outing.

'Tween and Teen Social Communication Groups Ages 10 -12 and 13-16 Are you looking to build your child's social skills? Social communication groups combine the best of both structured skill lessons and natural interactions with peers in a relaxed setting. A licensed speech/language therapist will help children problem solve their own difficulties while providing them with a new skill base for social interactions. A small group might include conversation development, friendship building, sharing ideas and playing games. Each group is limited to three children.Sessions meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Talk about It (Communication Group) Ages 8-10 This fun and interactive group will help your child use words to communicate more effectively with others. Lead by a licensed speech/ language therapist, each session will begin with a structured lesson that will teach children important rules of communication such as turn-taking, positive and negative talk, question and answering skills and perspective-taking. Social scripting and other follow-up activities will be used to help children apply the skills they learn to real situations. Each group is limited to three children. Sessions meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Picky Eaters Are you at your wits end with your picky eater? Are you wondering if he or she is "just being a kid" or if there is more to it? Let a speech-language pathologist with feeding experience help you. Feeding groups available for children would benefit or let individual sessions help you find practical ways to broaden your child's food choices!

How Counseling Helps

Counseling

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT STAFF

DIRECTOR

People from every walk of life seek out counseling services and for a wide variety of reasons. One person might work with a psychotherapist in order to overcome feelings of anxiety, irritability, or depression. Another person might want to break problematic patterns of behavior or begin to heal past injuries that are getting in the way of happiness at home and at work. Couples come in to improve and deepen their relationships. Families find help understanding and overcoming the problems that frequently occur at specific points in the life cycle. Kids and adolescents often need assistance with peer problems, academic pressures, and self-esteem.

The Community House leads the Willowbrook Corner Coalition, which is a group of approximately 21 agencies who work together to provided services for the residents of this neighborhood. The neighborhood, commonly referred to as Willowbrook Corner, because of its location in the far south east corner of DuPage County consists of four apartment and condominium complexes. The residents are primarily low income, minority, and most families consist of single parent, female lead households.

The Community House also provides an Open Recreational Basketball program for the Middle and High School Students in the neighborhood. The Basketball Program operates two nights a week, during the winter months. The program takes place in the gym of Anne M. Jeans, and is facilitated by Community House staff and a DuPage County Sherriff.

The Community House has been involved with and has provided programming for the residents of Unincorporated Willowbrook for over 14 years. The Community House is collaborating with Hinsdale South High School (Hinsdale District 86) and will launch a satellite pilot version of the High School’s Excel Program at the Willowbrook Corner location in January 2011. The Excel program teaches numeracy, literacy, and Executive Function skills. The program will run 2 nights weeks until the end of the 2010-2011 school year at the Willowbrook location, and be facilitated by two Hinsdale South staff members as well as one Community House staff member. The space for this program is generously donated by the property management of Hinsdale Lake Terrace.

Be sure to check out our new website!! www.wccoalition.org

Programs like this, which exist to meet a specific need in this neighborhood, would not be possible without the continued collaborations between The Community House, Burr Ridge CCSD 180 and Hinsdale District 86. In addition, while nominal fees are charged for the programs, based on family size and income, these programs rely on and are primary sustained through generous donations from individuals, private foundations, and county funding. For more information on the Willowbrook Corner Initiative, please contact, Tracy Boucher, Director of Social Services tboucher@thecommunityhouse.org or 630-323-7500 Ext. 224.

Support The Community House SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY HOUSE GIFTS BY WILL

MATCHING GIFTS Many employers will match the gifts of employees, retirees and members of the corporate board when their gifts are made to nonprofit organizations such as The Community House. The amount of your personal gift can be doubled, or even tripled, at no additional cost to you if your company has a matching gift program. Please contact your company’s community affairs or human resources department to see if a matching gift plan is available and if the The Community House is eligible.

GIFTS OF CASH A gift of cash is the most common form of charitable giving. An outright gift to The Community House qualifies as a federal tax deduction for up to 50% of adjusted gross income. If that limit is exceeded in any one year, the excess deduction can be “carried over” into the next five years. A gift of cash is considered made on the date it is mailed or hand delivered. Gifts delivered or mailed by December 31 qualify for tax deductibility for the calendar year. Please make checks payable to: The Community House.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE A current life insurance policy can be changed or a new policy can be written to name The Community House as owner and beneficiary. A gift of life insurance can provide both a substantial charitable contribution and tax advantage.

A carefully prepared will is the best way to ensure that your loved ones are provided for after death, and that your preferred charities are supported as you intend. Once completed, it can be revised and updated as your wishes and circumstances change. A simple addition to a will — “I give, devise and bequeath the (sum/percentage of/residue of my estate) to The Community House for such purposes as its board of trustees shall determine” can provide long-term benefits for The Community House and reduce federal estate taxes.

GIFTS OF APPRECIATED SECURITIES OR REAL ESTATE Stocks (including mutual funds), many bonds, other securities and property may make ideal contributions. When considering the sale of a particular holding, it is important to first check with a professional advisor to determine its suitability as a charitable gift.

MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE GIFTS More and more, it is customary for friends and family members to express their sympathy through memorial giving as a meaningful way to offer consolation on the loss of a friend or relative. At other times, marking a special occasion or an achievement by honoring a person, couple or family through a tribute gift may be appreciated more than a material gift. The amount of your gift is kept confidential, and the friend or family member is informed of your thoughtfulness through an acknowledgement letter from The Community House.

If you would like gift planning assistance, please call Heather Graves at (630) 323-7500, ext. 255. 45 415 West Eighth Street | Hinsdale, Illinois 60521 | 630.323.7500 www.thecommunityhouse.org
