Serving Him Differently Rabbi Saadiah Gaon was a great leader of Klal Yisroel. One winter morning, two of his Talmidim were walking in the mountains when a strange sound was heard. To their immense surprise, they saw their great Master sitting on the snow covered ground, weeping and engaging in acts of Teshuvah. They hurriedly departed but could not help wondering for what their revered Teacher was doing Teshuvah. Later that day, being unable to restrain their curiosity, they approached the Gaon and asked him about the scene they witnessed. Rav Saadiah informed them that he does this every day. He told them, “Every day, I stand before Hashem to forgive me for my failings. I will tell you a story that happened a while ago so that you understand better.” “During a certain period in my life, I realized that all the honour I was receiving somehow interfered with my Avodas Hashem which must be done with complete joy and humility. If there is no humility, joy is impossible. I thought about this matter and finally decided to go into exile where no one would recognize me. One night, I lodged in a small inn which was owned by a kind, simple and old Yid. I bade him farewell the following morning and went on my way. I did not know that several of my Talmidim

were searching for me and a few hours after I left the inn they approached and asked the innkeeper if he had seen Rav Saadiah Gaon. The innkeeper was bewildered and informed them that they must be mistaken. Yet, when my Talmidim described me to the innkeeper and explained about my exile, the old Yid cried out that indeed I had spent the night at his inn. He was beside himself and jumped into his wagon and pursued the direction I had taken. He caught up with me and fell at my feet begging forgiveness. I told him to stand up and said, “My dear friend, you treated me extremely well. You have nothing to apologize for.” The innkeeper persisted and said, “If I would have known who you really are, I would have served you completely differently!” It was at this point that I discovered that the innkeeper was teaching me a very important lesson in Avodas Hashem and thus the purpose of my exile was fulfilled. Since then, every evening, I think about how I served the Ribono Shel Olam that day and I say, “If had known about Hashem at the beginning of the day what I know now, I would have served Him completely differently!” Rav Saadiah turned to his Talmidim and said, “And therefore it is for this that I repent every morning!”

Most people have heard of the Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. There are also 115 lesser known pyramids scattered throughout the country. Some of these have been covered by desert sand. Google Earth may have discovered more of these lost pyramids. Google Earth is a mapping program that combines satellite technology and aerial photography. It started out as a project of the Central Intelligence Agency and was acquired by Google in 2004. Google Earth took images of what appear to be clusters of pyramids. The two sites are about 90 miles apart. One of the sites has a distinct square shape and is about 140 feet across. It also contains a three small mounds arranged diagonally, which is similar to the Pyramids at Giza. The second site has four mounds. The two largest are about 250 feet across while the smaller two are closer to 100 feet across.
