Flu virus ‘knows when to attack’

The flu virus has an in-built clock which tells it exactly when to strike to have the maximum impact, a study in the Cell Reports journal shows. The internal molecular clock tells the flu bug how much time it has to multiply, infect other cells, and spread to another human being. If it attacks too early it will be too weak, but leave it too late and the immune system has time to fight back.

On the other hand acquiring this protein too slowly would give the immune system time to launch a response before the virus can escape - killing the virus and preventing infection, they said. Prof tenOever hopes this discovery will lead to new antiviral drugs which target the virus’s internal clock and that it will provide a new design platform for the flu vaccine. “We knew that the virus has about eight

Researchers say finding ways to reset the clock could lead to new treatments. Study leader Prof Benjamin tenOever, from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said once inside a human cell, the virus needed to steal resources in order to multiply and gain a foothold. This can alert the immune system to the virus’ presence, so how does the flu virus know how much time it has got left, he added. Accumulates protein The researchers discovered that the virus slowly accumulates one particular protein called NEP that it needs to exit the cell and spread to other cells - and eventually other humans.

hours in a cell to create enough copies of itself to continue spreading before the cell’s antiviral alarm would be set off,” he said. “On a broader level, the virus needs two days of continuous activity to infect enough cells to permit spread to another human being. “We wanted to tap into the flu’s internal clock and find a way to dismantle it to prevent the spread of the virus.”

To stop itself making too much NEP the virus has linked its production with that of another protein NS1. The researches then manipulated this timer by making the virus acquire this protein too fast. This caused flu to exit the cell too quickly and not have time to make more of itself.

Homemade Carpet or Spot Cleaner Materials: White vinegar Baking Soda (not baking powder– there is a difference!) Lemon essential oil (optional) Old towels or rags Directions: 1. If using the lemon essential oil, mix it with the baking soda and then sprinkle the mixture on the spot. Allow it to absorb for a little while from one hour to overnight. TIP: Lemon is a wonderful all-around cleaner and it helps to deodorize the carpet as well. If you are not using the lemon, then sprinkle plain baking soda over the stain. 2. Mix a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water in a spray bottle (remember to repurpose!) 3. Generously spray the mixture on the baking soda and allow it to fizz. 4. Lay a towel or rag over the wet spot and press on it to absorb the moisture. 5. Depending on the severity and age of the stain, you may have to repeat this process more than once. NOTE: It may take several applications, until the tough stains are removed. It’s all natural so no worries about any toxic chemicals in your house

Over Your They say... Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Did you know...? Darker shades of wine (the deepest, blackest reds and the most golden whites) usually come from warm climates and are rich and ripe. Lighter colors, especially in white wines, come from cooler climates and are lighter and less lush. Humor ;-)

Underground fires are burning vast acres of coal at 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. These fires are often started through forest fires. Unlike other minerals like gold and silver that are found in veins that go a few feet, coal is found in seams beginning on a mountainside and continuing for miles. So, when it catches fire, it is basically impossible to stop until the fire runs out of its fuel. Alarmingly high amounts of our coal storage are being destroyed in this manner. Not only is the coal being destroyed, but harmful gasses are released from burning the coal without any way to control them. They could kill someone in a matter of seconds. About 583 of these coal fires are happening as we speak in West Virginia alone. It is causing some major problems, but they have yet to figure out any solution to the problem.

A stockbroker urged an old guy to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. The old man replied , “At my age, I don’t even buy green bananas.”

Coal mines in West Virginia are continually burning and it’s almost impossible to stop!
