TESS BARTLET INT. CRED. Master Coach Student

Let Go IN ORDER TO Receive HOW TO

Tess Bartlett is writer, speaker, researcher and mindfulness and transformation coach for heart-centred female entrepreneurs and the Director of Tess Bartlett Holistic Coaching. She is passionate about creativity, mindfulness, and self-compassion and has written for various publications. A few weeks ago I ran a workshop on mindfulness meditation and someone in the group said: “This may be a silly question, but how do you let go?” It is not a silly question. In fact, it is a very important question, and one that is given scant attention, because we are all too busy holding on for our lives. When we are experiencing pain and difficult emotions such as fear, grief, loss, anger, resentment and sadness, the tendency is to want to ruminate and worry. We keep repeating the stories we have created in our minds that have either already happened or are yet to happen.

When we ruminate on thoughts of the past, we can start to identify with these events and relive them over and over again and this can lead to depression (see Murray Law, 2005). Conversely, fixating on thoughts that are situated in the future may lead to anxiety as we plan, worry, and fear what is yet to come. The most important thing to know is that due to human evolution, our minds are conditioned to focus more intensely on thoughts that are negative. This is what neuropsychologist Rick Hanson (2010) coined the “negativity bias” that exists in our brain’s amygdala:

page 14

“The alarm bell of your brain – the amygdala – uses about two-thirds of its neurons to look for bad news: it’s primed to go negative. Once it sounds the alarm, negative events and experiences get quickly stored in memory – in contrast to positive events and experiences, which usually need to be held in awareness for a dozen or more seconds to transfer from shortterm memory buffers to longterm storage.”

In our brains this bias is “...Velcro for negative experiences but Teflon for positive ones” as Hanson suggests. The more we focus on and engage with negative stories, the more the stories become embedded in our minds. This in essence, is holding on. Instead of simply experiencing feelings, thoughts and emotions as they occur, the tendency is to grasp, resist, avoid and turn away. I mean, who wants to experience gut-wrenching loss over someone or something? Who wants to experience death? Who wants to experience anything without something to relieve us of this pain? Yet when we resist sensations, as well as life, we are holding on to the pain and remains in the problem and this only serve to prolong the pain.

LETTING GO: WHAT YOU WANT TO DO Bring into your mind a real life event that has happened to you recently – it may be an argument with a partner or a friend where you feel like you have been harmed in some way or maybe you haven’t been heard. Have you gone over and over the event in your mind? Each time you replay the conversation the hurt seems to go a little deeper. You feel the pain hurtling through your body. The stories are piling on top of each other and what started out as “She’s such a …” Has turned on yourself and has become “I am so ...” All you want to do is retreat into the mountains. Go where no-one can disturb you and you are free from all the problems. Realistically however, if you were to shut yourself away in a cabin while continuing to resist life, you would continue to experience suffering for your mind has simply come along for the ride. Not only will you be alone in a cabin, you will have our inner critic right there beside you. “Helloooooooooo!” “Fancy meeting you here.” As you bunker down, preparing for your weekend of solitude, the same old stories start circling through your mind reminding you that you’re not good enough, that the work you’re doing is a piece of crap, or that you really have no talent at all. Within this space there is no opportunity for growth and no opportunity for being open to learn. You can choose to continue running the same old patterns of resistance where you battle the whirlwind of cacophonies scripted out by your nasty inner critic, or you can choose another path that is light and golden to touch. page 15

You close your eyes and gently open your palms, releasing the feather into the whirling wind. With it you let go of the hurt, the pain, and the stories that have been circling through your mind.

“I’ve stopped trying to conduct the orchestra and have become the music itself.” Unknown LETTING GO:

As you open your eyes you watch the feather drift softly away and you feel lightness come over you as you allow beauty, opportunity, and light into your life.

LETTING GO: WHAT YOU NEED TO DO Letting go involves physically, emotionally, and mentally releasing the things that no longer serve, support, nurture and challenge you. Change your mindset to one of acceptance, love, forgiveness and compassion and imagine your mind and body to be that of a river. Firstly, letting go means allowing feelings to rush through you like water. It also takes being diligent with your thinking. The river of the mind needs diverting or it will flood. Each time you bring your mind back to the present you are adding stones to the river and slowly, over time, the river begins flowing freely in another direction. Each time you break your habitual patterns of negative thinking about the same old story you are strengthening the pathway back to your true self and your neurological pathway.

LETTING GO EXERCISE FOR USE IN DAILY LIFE You are standing in a golden meadow, wind whispering in your ears. You grasp a feather tightly between your palms, which holds a story that has been plaguing you for days. You imagine what it will feel like to release your feather into the wind: how free you will feel and how you are going to be content and happy in knowing that everything is taken care of.

THE FUTURE OF

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Pooja Lohana is an Online Business Coach + Freelance Writer & Editor. She helps entrepreneurs shine their blog and copy, and simplifies online marketing so they can make more sales and live the Un-9-5 life. Reach her at www. ghostwriterpooja.com. My thought about “magic” changed back in 2013. I started believing in it. It was a crisp afternoon in April 2013 when Mary (name changed) gingerly raised her hand in a room full of around 30 of us.

The challenge was to get Mary to take a photo at the building’s open terrace. Huge deal for her. So here’s what happened in a nutshell: Before the bust: Mary cannot imagine stepping up the stairs to the terrace. She gets nervous goosebumps just talking about it.

“I believe I have a phobia,” she said. …Magic… “What kind?” our instructor probed. “I am scared of heights. I cannot, just cannot imagine travelling by air. I have never gone trekking. Heck, I can’t even step into a balcony.”

After the bust: Mary has overcome her phobia successfully. She gets her photo clicked at the rooftop. So how does someone get from here to there?

Mary grew visibly uncomfortable. Pearls of sweat settled on her forehead. By now she was shaking with nervousness. It seemed like Sharon Pearson, our instructor, had found her match. Over the next few minutes, she would “swoosh” her invisible wand and bust Mary’s acrophobia of 25 years, using NLP.

They say that if a man can do it, another can replicate it too. NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming, is based heavily on this principle. More formally known as “modelling”, it is one of the core pillars of NLP.

page 18

In short, if any task is done skilfully, it can be

decoded and replicated by others. And that was only the beginning. But simply put, I liken NLP to the science of how people can achieve outstanding results. These people can be from diverse spectrum of fields – finance, communications, sales, customer service – you name it. It’s equally important to acknowledge that NLP is not just effective professionally. There are numerous personal life instances that I have witnessed its success (Mary is one example) – personal change work, behavioural therapy, phobia

busting,

addiction

relief,

healing,

confidence boost and many more.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN. . . To give you a brief history, NLP was founded by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in early 70’s as a thesis project in California. The duo had one simple goal: To decode why certain people were excellent at what they did whereas others sucked. What set them apart? And how could the not-so-smart ones replicate the results, if at all? As models, they studied three key people who were successful at what they did. Virginia Satir, the ever-successful family therapist who seemed to solve intractable family issues; Fritz Perls, who co-founded Gestalt therapy; and Milton Ericson, the famous hypnotherapist. Studying their behavioural patterns, Bandler and Grinder found that these three pioneers,

TODAY . . . Today, NLP is used in a myriad of fields such as hypnosis, healing, personal change work, sport, life coaching, business coaching and sales training. It’s also taken a spiritual detour, with learners combining it to connect with the divine. Some are using it in hospitals to reduce the need to induce anaesthesia. Others use it to become better parents, fight stage fright or cure allergies. What’s more, you can even use it to pick up women in clubs.

If you’ve played any type of sport, you will know there comes a state of natural “flow” where you are in the zone, performing at your mental and physical best. Yet, it is hard to pin down that exact state of flow on purpose. The best sportspeople in the world wouldn’t have a clue. But with NLP in the house, this state can be invoked upon will. There are many conscious (and unconscious) strategies that help achieve peak performance. Anchoring, for example, is immensely helpful for a judo player to access states of explosive power when needed. Timothy Galwey wrote his best-seller The Inner Game of Tennis based on NLP principles. The book talks about detailed mental and physical exercises designed to help a player improve concentration, awareness and body rhythm.

therefore the focus should be on that level.

THE FUTURE. . .

Practitioners in the field have all taken different directions using classic principles of NLP. For example, Tony Robbins took NLP a step further and created Neuro Associative Conditioning (NAC) and began incorporating it in his work as a peak performance coach. We have Michael Hall’s version of taking NLP to the next level with meta-semantics. Even pioneer John Grinder now refers to the original NLP modelling projects as Classic Code, and is now focusing on New Code NLP.

In future, NLP will continue to be used in the areas above, and more to come. It won’t be surprising to see NLP being applied in more dayto-day areas. The one thing that really excites me is the application in schools. The sad reality of the moment (which I hope will soon change) is that we leave it up to the students to figure out how to learn. When in reality, a large number of these learning strategies that inexperienced students come up with are inefficient/ineffective. And when the push comes to shove, many of these students take it upon themselves and assume something is wrong with them. The truth

page 20

Meta Dynamics™ Another example is Sharon Pearson’s Meta Dynamics™ which is the “ultimate thinking model for solving problems and determining future directions”. For many of us, we believe that the best way to help us change the way we think is to tell ourselves repeatedly, to think a different way. The idea isn’t new. In fact, it’s very, very old. But choosing a mantra isn’t enough, it is important to learn new ways to do things, even little changes will give you a whole new perspective. By changing or breaking even small

NLP now is in its fourth decade as a field of study symbolising the relationship between the brain, body and language. It has evolved over the years and we’re heading toward a new direction, with more areas adopting NLP and making its best use to achieve extraordinary results, by not only communicating better with others, but also gain more control on what we thought was an automatic function of our neurology.

routines, your brain will be exposed to new stimuli and will create new neural pathways to accommodate these changes. Meta Dynamics™ is about getting to the heart of the problem. One of the biggest challenges that professional coaches face in the industry is reaching a bottleneck and getting stuck with their clients. Instead of looping around clients’ issues not knowing how to get to the heart of the problem, Meta Dynamics™ shows them exactly how.

7 ESSENTIAL TOOLS to Get Your COACHING BUSINESS

Online

Kelly Petering leads her own health and wellness tours as well as working with entrepreneurs helping them develop their online presence via their website and social media. Kelly is passionate about helping others communicate to the world in a modern and powerful way.

In this article, you will discover seven essential tools to assist you in getting your coaching business up and running online, so you can start generating leads, sales and eventually an income stream that requires only a small amount of your time. When you start out online, things can seem rather daunting. My mission is to demystify some of the tools and tricks that are out there for you to take advantage and use in getting your coaching

1. CULTIVATE A CAN-DO MINDSET Coming from a growth mindset in this learning experience is essential. Create your mindset for success: •

2. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP

3. USE THE RIGHT TOOLS

You don’t have to be good at everything.

Learn the basics so you can run your own show, and outsource the fiddly things that you dislike doing. Some examples could be logo and ebook design or any kind of graphics, transcription, voice overs (if you are not confident in recording your own voice), and video production. Here are my favourite places to outsource tools that will free up some of your time for the other fun stuff: •

Wordpress is one of the most popular website building platforms out there. You can choose to create a free site with Wordpress however, I highly recommend purchasing your own domain name and hosting provider so that you will own your personal web domain name. Once you have a domain and a hosting provider, and have installed Wordpress with your hosting provider, you will then need to choose a theme to make your website look professional. I recommend using a theme called Divi from Elegant Themes — it’s simple to use, responsive
