Welcome

A lifetime ago, in 2018, that year’s CMC theme was What’s Next? Predictions were made, innovative plans were outlined, the runes were cast... But no-one predicted what actually happened in the following years. As we come together in Sheffield, also welcoming virtual delegates watching the live-stream, we need to consider the future again from new perspectives. We need to ask: What Next 2.2. One big change in 2022 is that all live sessions will be at the Crucible Theatre. We'll consider the future of funding for children’s content: in the light of the end of CBBC as a dedicated channel, in the context of a new Broadcasting Act, the Young Audiences Content Fund evaluation and a down-turning economy impacting on budgets all round. We’ll focus on the audience. How should we serve them during critical times? In our online video strand, we’ll explore the big picture issues that impact on media makers and distributors, the constantly changing media landscape as audiences migrate to streamers, social and immersive experiences; the pressure on funding, the impact of the pandemic on the mental health and well-being of millions of young people worldwide, their educational opportunities blighted, and their futures uncertain and confusing as climate change threatens, war becomes a daily reality, poverty entraps ever more of them and truth becomes a casualty the world over. Our Opening Keynote speaker, Ben McOwen Wilson, MD YouTube UK and Regional Director YouTube EMEA, will address ‘what next’ with the perspective of someone who has held senior roles in broadcasting and is now the UK lead for a digital platform that engages, entertains, educates and empowers its young users, but also faces huge issues

4

inherent in online delivery and social media freedom. What next for YouTube? What next for the audience and the industry? CMC will help you to see into the future with detailed analysis of international market opportunities, commissioning priorities, content case studies, creative masterclasses and practical advice on inclusion, sustainability and innovation. A huge welcome back to all our delegates and our brilliant student volunteers. And a massive thank you to them, to the ever-diligent CMC Advisory Committee, to the dozens of session and video producers, the hosts and moderators and all the speakers who give of their time and expertise so freely to bring you CMC 2022. Our thanks go to our sponsors who steadfastly supported us during the pandemic and who continue to step up in these difficult times. A big thank you to Tim Patterson who is Conference Producer in the Crucible this year, while Greg runs CMC 2022 Online, and to Team CMC – Darren, Mat, Joe, Lorna, Rachael, Diane, Helen, Sarah and Alison. Special thanks as ever to the yearround team – Jacqui, Lauren and Claire – whom many of you know, and who work hard to enable the CMC to be able to tackle whatever comes next. And finally a sad but extremely appreciative thank-you to Sue Nott who stands down this year after ten annual conferences as CMC Advisory Committee Chair. Remember, all the content will remain available on the conference platform until 30 September so we can be inspired all summer long.

Greg Childs. Editorial Director Kathy Loizou. Director The Children’s Media Conference

Introduction What Next 2.2

Welcome to the 19th Children’s Media Conference and our first ever hybrid conference. We’re delighted to be opening our doors in Sheffield once again, as well as bringing you an enhanced offering online. Wherever you’re joining us, we’re excited to have you with us. We hope that you will enjoy meeting new and old colleagues and that you’ll go away fired up with new perspectives and ideas. Our conference theme this year is What Next 2.2. As the saying goes, the future is always unpredictable, but little did we know when we chose ‘What’s Next’ for our theme four years ago, just what radical changes were lying in wait in the immediate future. Now we need to adjust to a ‘new normal’, personally and professionally. At the same time, the world of children’s media is shifting in the context of a wider media landscape which is changing as rapidly as the real world. All this continues to have an impact on the lives of children and young people the world over. They have missed out on education and social activities, they’ve been deprived of contact with friends and wider family and are now having to readjust just as much as their parents, carers and teachers. More than ever, they need specially commissioned and produced media to help them make sense of a rapidly changing planet and to give them delight, entertainment and reassurance. Our collective innovation and creativity have never been more necessary to help bring joy and hope in uncertain times.

6

As we meet together once again, both online and in person, to share ideas and experiences, it’s my time to pass on the baton to Marion Edwards who will start in September her term as Chair of the CMC Advisory Committee. I’ve had such a fruitful and inspiring time since my first meeting as Chair in 2013 and I wish Marion all my best wishes for what’s next. Whether you’re new to CMC or a regular delegate, I know you’ll find plenty to entertain and inspire you and that you’ll have fun. Enjoy! Sue Nott Advisory Committee Chair The Children’s Media Conference
