The Children’s Media Conference 2021 Online 00

Welcome

Hello, here we are again – together in spirit if not in person. Obviously, our content agenda this year is still dominated by the pandemic, but with a sense of optimism that we can start talking seriously about what happens next. For children and young people life under lockdown and restrictions has been a particularly difficult experience – something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It has disrupted a significant part of their childhood or youth. Our Opening Keynote from the acclaimed educator Andria Zafirakou will lead the debate on children and their relationship with school, and of course their mental health going forward. Reflection on well-being also features in several of the videos in the Perspective On… strand. Joining our all-women Keynote line-up, are Dani Harmer and Dame Jacqueline Wilson, and Konnie Huq. New for this year, our togetherness will be augmented by direct messaging inside the CMC 2021 Online Portal – and meeting people in our new networking space, Wonder. CMC will also be welcoming young delegates and emerging programme makers who have never previously been able to attend a media-professionals event. The Inclusivity Now strand is packed with practical examples of how media makers are making a difference in response to the demands of a vocal and active audience. The Research strand will certainly highlight the issues

facing young people, but equally there will be insights into their resilience, their passion, and their egalitarianism. If we can find a positive in a world rightly concerned with racial and gender equality, inclusion of the differently-abled, the future of the planet itself, then it will be in CMC videos and sessions. Making the CMC is, in itself, an act of ‘togetherness’. CMC is essentially conceived, developed and curated by people from every part of the industry, at every level, who give of their time, their expertise, their not inconsiderable powers of persuasion, and their fantastic good-will to get the thing done. May we thank our Advisory Committee and Advisory groups who have put together the programme, all our volunteer session producers and Exec producers, the conference bloggers, and the many other volunteers who work tirelessly to make it happen. Our thanks to our sponsors who have stepped up to support us in these difficult times. And a big thank you to Team CMC – Darren, Mat, Joe, Claire, Lorna, Rachael, Diane, Helen, Sarah and Alison. A special thanks to Jacqui and Lauren, whom many of you know, and you know their 100% commitment to CMC. Remember, all the content will remain available on the conference platform until 30 September. We come together in the week of CMC, but we can learn together all summer long. Greg Childs Editorial Director Kathy Loizou Director, The Children’s Media Conference The Children’s Media Conference 2021 Online 00

Introduction

Little did we know this time last year that CMC 2021 would again be an online conference. Yet here we are. So, a warm welcome to a virtual Sheffield and the 18th Children’s Media Conference. Last year’s conference broke new ground and proved to be more popular than ever. And we trust that you’ll find plenty to engage, entertain and inspire you, as we meet again in the virtual space. Our theme this year is TOGETHER. As individuals, many of us have struggled with the difficulties of surviving in a pandemic. Some have faced the stress of diminishing work; others the stress of producing content under Covid restrictions. Staying safe and staying in work have been the priorities. But – together – the children’s community continues to create and commission the entertaining and informative content so needed by our young audience, who have missed out on so much. We’ve shared experiences and helped each other learn new approaches and techniques. Our collective creativity, innovation and ingenuity have been necessary as never before. Humans are social animals. Children and young people learn from being together with their peers, at school and at play. During successive lockdowns, they’ve been isolated from their friends and wider families. They’ve resorted increasingly to TV, online, social media and books for entertainment, information, education – and reassurance. As they gradually come together again, what will they want and need from us and in what form? And for us, the providers, what is the new normal? Will we continue to work remotely, connecting electronically when necessary? How and where will people come together to create and to inspire each other? 00 The Children’s Media Conference 2021 Online

At CMC, again this year, we are ‘together apart’. We connect electronically to recreate the sense of community – the buzz of sharing ideas. The ‘live’ sessions offer the excitement of immediacy, bringing us together in the moment; the ever-growing bank of video-on-demand gives us the opportunity to soak up information at our leisure. And though nothing can quite replace those chance encounters in the Showroom bar or in the Hubs, increasingly sophisticated networking software can help us feel connected, to feel ‘together’. Whether you’re new to CMC or an old hand, we hope you’ll feel part of a welcoming and inclusive community. Enjoy! Sue Nott Advisory Group Chair, The Children’s Media Conference

Nick Park

Kurt built a name for himself as a brilliant creative collaborator well-known in the kids’ media business. But did you know he started his career as a teacher? We hear Kurt’s rather marvellous story about entering the world of children’s television.

Nick Park is best known for Wallace & Gromit, which began as a college project, and has captivated audiences across generations. We go Back to the Beginning to see what inspired the man that has himself inspired so many in the industry.
