Council receives Forced Rd. petition development, agriculture, Hydro One cutting, disease and weather. Many of the Forced Road trees are over a century old and still vigorous. Another concern is that increased tree loss may negatively affect the ecosystem in the adjacent Tweed Conservation Area. Councillor Amanda Simard said Council will discuss options during the budget sessions to protect the landscape of the road, including heritage landscape designation. It is scheduled for repaving in 2017. The shape, width and style of Forced Road have changed little since the street was settled. It is a remnant of the first road in the area to be “forced"through the forests and swamps from the St. Lawrence River to the Ottawa River, probably following an ancient trail.

Candice Vetter Villager Staff RUSSELL — Residents of Russell Township who oppose tree removal along Forced Road in the village of Russell presented a petition to Russell Township Council on Mon., Jan. 12.
