Chamber Seeks to Better Engage Membership Through Social Media While the Chamber currently uses social media on a daily basis the potential to use social media more effectively and consistently n the future is there. This was the conclusion of the Chamber Board at their April meeting. To that end the Board has asked Board Member, Brian Rydell from Rydell Auto Center to chair a Social Media Task Force. The purpose of the Task Force is to review The Chamber’s current social media plan and baseline metrics, suggest changes to the plan and new strategies and develop new analytics/metrics so the Chamber can track its social media progress. The results of the Task Force will be reported to the membership so they can potentially use the results in their business. If you have an interest in serving on this task force please contact Lisa Swanson at the Chamber office:

Need For Workforce Development Committee is Clear

After taking a quick review of the current workforce statistics for Grand Forks County and its obvious why workforce is emerging as the biggest issue facing businesses in our region. Consider that in May of 2013 there were 1,664 job opening in Grand Forks County. In April of 2014 that number has risen to 2,012 and a month later in May of 2014 the number currently stands at 2,572 positions open in just Grand Forks County alone. That is a year over year increase of 908 positions or 54.6% and 27.3% more than the previous months. Another number that is important to consider is that there is currently only a half an unemployed person for each current job opening compared to .8 unemployed person per job opening a year ago. By every measure the local workforce is getting tighter. Find out more about this committee on page 2.

Workforce Task Forces Announced

Vote on June 10th

Be sure to vote on June 10th.

With more than 2,000 local job openings, workforce continues to be a major issue facing business. Following a successful meeting of local HR Directors, The Chamber, EDC, local SHRM group and Job Service of ND are forming 6 task forces to work on potential solutions. While there is no one solution, there are many things we can do collectively as businesses and nonprofit partners to identify and get more people working in our community. The six task forces are: • Business – Post Secondary Education Engagement • Veteran/Military Recruitment • New Americans Employment • Joint Referral Network • High School Career Awareness • Niche Workforce Markets (examples: homeless, social service recipients, retirees) Please feel free to contact Barry Wilfahrt at the Chamber at or Keith Lund at the EDC at keithl@grandforks. org if you would like to be involved in one or more of the task forces.

Candidates for Grand Forks School Board and City Council are up for election. The Chamber sponsored forums can be seen on local cable TV channel 2 at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday prior to the election. There are 2 candidates running for each of the two contested City Council seats. Councilman Dana Sande is unopposed in the third Ward up for election. For the School Board there are 6 candidates running for two 2 year seats and 15 candidates running for five 4 year seats. Special thanks to The City of Grand Forks for allowing The Chamber to use the City Council Chambers to host the forums and to Mike Helt from Alerus Financial who helped organize the forums.

to include a major segment on Grand Forks and the Grand Forks Region in the hearings. Depending on the purpose of each interim committee, the group has thanked the legislature for their past support of Grand Forks and Grand Forks region projects on everything from the new medical school to base impact funding. On the horizon the team has updated the various committees on the enhanced use lease at the air force base, long term future of the base, transportation needs, UND capital and operation’s needs, water supply needs and long term infrastructure needs.

More than 30 local “Team Grand Forks” members have come together to convey relevant messages to these important committees. Helping the legislature understand how we have been good stewards of state money in the past and our future needs will be very important when the legislature convenes again in January of 2015.

City Administrator Todd Feland and Councilman, Ken Vein will present the cities plans and lead a discussion with the local business community at that meeting.

Special Board Meeting Open to Membership

If interested in attending, please RSVP by emailing The Chamber at

Nancy Johnson Speaks at Chamber Ag Committee Meeting At the May Agribusiness Committee meeting Nancy Johnson, Executive Director of the ND Soybean Growers Assoc., spoke to the committee about the soybean industry in our area. According to Nancy, ND farmers intended to plant 6.5 million acres of soybeans this year, a one million acre increase (22%) from last year. However, given the late spring, soybean acreage may even be higher than that. 70 to 75 percent of the state’s soybean production is shipped by rail to ports in the Pacific Northwest, many of them bound for China. This is why the delays in rail car deliveries this winter and spring has been the Growers Association’s No. 1 issue. A recent NDSU study indicates that North Dakota farmers have already lost more than $66 million due to the lower-than-average cash prices, which are in part due to the rail congestion. 4

EAPC Architects Engineers is pleased to announce the appointment of Rick Failing as its Director of Healthcare Support Services. Rick’s position was recently developed to enhance many of the services EAPC has provided over 47 years to its healthcare clients. Rick will provide liaison services between existing and prospective healthcare clients including resource acquisition services as required by the client, whether it be initial facility assessment, demand analysis, preliminary design development, financing options, final design planning, construction monitoring, or post construction follow-up. Rick has served in senior healthcare management positions for nearly 30 years with the majority of those years as the chief executive officer of rural healthcare organizations, most recently for Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center. Over these many years, Rick was involved in numerous healthcare

facility infrastructure improvement projects and new building construction. Alan Dostert, CEO and President of EAPC, said “Rick’s experience as a seasoned healthcare administrator provides a new perspective and balance to our team of EAPC healthcare professionals, and as a result is allowing us to broaden our industry knowledge and provide another level of service to our healthcare partners. We are extremely excited to have Rick on our team!” Rick has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and a master’s degree in healthcare administration. In 2004, he was selected to serve on the Minnesota Governor’s Rural Health Advisory Committee, and was awarded in 2002 the Minnesota Department of Health’s Rural Health Hero Award. He was one of eight finalists for the National Rural Health Association’s 2003 Louis Gorin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Rural Health Care. Twice under his leadership, the Northwest Minnesota Foundation awarded their 1999 Outstanding NonProfit Agency award and their 2011 Organizational Excellence award.
