Mike’s Cowboy Chili Challenge Story and photo by Alan Dockery Oh, what a yummy day we had the last Saturday in February. T-shirt weather at Son of the South Saloon, Longview, NC, meant we could enjoy the afternoon for Mike’s Cowboy Chili Challenge. Lots of folks showed Entrants had to cook outside over up to hang out, talk a wood fire. with old friends, fuss about the long cold winter, and sample chili. Mike told me he wanted to do something like this from the time he opened SOS. He owns the oldest real biker bar in Hickory, The Wizard Saloon, and has outside parties there during the Summer. But the Cowboy Chili Challenge was a little different. Entrants had to cook outside over a wood fire. Mike had some old big truck rims welded up that made great cookers. Being the first annual chili challenge and a cold Winter, only a few folks showed up to cook. Thanks to Freddy Foster, Richard Fleck, and Renee Waggoner, all from the Hickory area. I sure liked Freddy’s chili since it was Carolina Style. Richards was pretty good, too, and he served up a bunch in a cast iron pan bigger than mine. But Renee won with her Texas Style chili. Renee and Freddy got trophies and Renee’s name goes on the plaque that will stay on the wall in Son of the South
Saloon. Looked like the folks enjoyed the Cowboy Chili Challenge. Y’all oughta come on down and serve up your best next time Mike hauls out the cookers and fire wood.
