NEW HALAAL TOPEKA SPUR OPENING

The Sunflower Fund, A crucial fund for many ill children. The Sunflower fund plays a crucial role in South Africa attending to the needs of ill children specifically around bone marrow transplants. The Fund entered into a new era with the appointment of new Chief Executive Officer, Alana James. “I am delighted to play a part in the ongoing success of The Sunflower Fund”, says James. She added that one of the most exciting elements of stewarding the new organisational strategy has been the shift in focus to ‘community’. TV Talk Show Host, Faizal Sayed, has recently been appointed as a national ambassador for the fund. “I feel that attending to these matters is a calling for me and it may have been a natural progression to be involved with the fund, Said Sayed during a brief interview. “The diagnosis of a dreaded disease like leukaemia is not only devastating to the individual, but is equally traumatising for family, friends and colleagues. It leaves no-one untouched and our job is to reach out to this community, supporting it the best way we know how – through our expertise in increasing donor numbers for the South African Bone Marrow Registry.” With this in mind, the Fund debuted its new tag line earlier this year: Hope begins with you, reflecting the mission and values of the organisation. With every prospective donor or informed patient, The Sunflower Fund brings hope of life to someone’s child, someone’s parent, someone’s friend. We’ve all heard horror stories about bone marrow donors having holes drilled into their bones to harvest much-needed bone marrow for leukaemia and other blood disorder patients in need of a transplant, but the good news is: THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE! James smiles reassuringly as she explains: “There was a time when the only option for stem cell harvesting was surgical, but we have come a long way since then, and I am delighted to put that myth to rest for ever! In almost all cases, the most appropriate procedure is what amounts to an extended blood donation, where your blood is harvested, the stem cells are separated, and the rest of your blood is returned to you. No general anaesthetic and definitely no drilling!

Education, awareness, recruitment and testing of donors are inextricably linked. The one activity cannot happen in isolation of the other. In order to continue this valuable work, The Sunflower Fund seeks ongoing assistance from the general public and corporate SA – not only seeking opportunities to recruit new donors, but also ways to raise the funds needed to pay for the DNA tests that allow people to join the Registry. “Our donor recruitment drives are aimed at healthy males and females, aged 18 to 45 years, with a BMI (body mass index) less than 40. Because genetic make-up plays such a critical role in the search for a match, we focus our campaigns across the ethnic groups to ensure that they are appropriately represented on the SABMR and reflect of South Africa’s rainbow nation.” James adds that the Indian and black communities are currently underrepresented and the Fund is actively seeking willing donors to help to make up this shortfall and ensure that ALL patients have the best possible chance of finding a match. In order to ensure that cost is not a limiting factor for a prospective donor, The Sunflower Fund bears the costs of the initial test. “There are currently approximately 72,000 people registered on the SABMR (South African Bone Marrow Registry), and the Fund’s goal is 400,000. Please help us by registering to be a donor at The Sunflower Fund today!” She concludes. Become a registered stem cell donor today! DID YOU KNOW? MITCHELL’S PLAIN

Mitchells Plain was designed in the mid seventies as a model ‘dormitory suburb’ for Coloured people, on the Cape Flats about 20 miles from the city centre The 56 original dwellings were built on a standard box-like design and laid out in neat rows with wide roads between them. The need for an area like Mitchells Plain was envisaged way back in the 1960 the first proposal was tabled by the City Engineer in 1965. The green light to go ahead to develop Mitchells Plain was given to the Cape Town City Council in 1971. What we the residents do not know about is the daunting and the magnitude of the task that it took to create this place we call home, a few interesting facts; - A large number of Grys, Rib Buck and tortoise were carefully captured and relocated to the Cape Point and Silvermine Reserves. - An extensive ground water resource underlies most of the 3,100 ha that is Mitchells Plain. Some of the exploratory boreholes are being used to recover water for horticultural purposes to supplement the main supply and borehole were also sunk to specifically cater for the sports fields. - When building began, houses were built at a staggering rate of 33 units per working day or one house every 15 minutes. - The Town Centre was developed on a budget of R25million and completed in 12 months. - Now this Mitchells Plain which was built on the idea of have a self-sufficient segregated dormitory Town far from the white areas and the City, is now home to over 400,000, with a spending power of over R100million per month is a major player in the Politics of the Western Cape, and should now become a major factor economically. - We have 9km of the False Bay Coast from Standfontein to Swartklip.
