Our cover shows an image of two hands clasped is a together to keep the human heart safe. Atop was lotus flower growing from the inside of the heart. The two hands represent the human race— it represents us; how we try to save and give whatever we have for each other during these difficult times, how we try to give peace when there is war, how we give love, how we try to provide justice, and how we try to help people understand. We lend a listening ear, and most of all, we give a spark of hope. The heart symbolizes ourselves; the way we keep on beating and surviving every storm that hits us. Like the heart that is always beating, we never give up on our faith that there will be an end to our suffering; that there is a God fighting for us and carrying our cross. Lastly, the lotus flower growing from the inside of the heart. A Lotus usually grows in the dirtiest places but they bloom and produce the most beautiful flowers.

They say the flower that grows in adversity is the most beautiful of all. Just like the heart of man, we go through the storms of life. We always find hope and make beauty out of every chaos. No matter how many heartbreaks, losses, or pain we have to endure in this lifetime, we have never given up.

Each day is a brand new day to celebrate and ignite the flames of hope within us. Because only when we have, that we are able to give.

Community Pantries: Hope in the Face of Crisis

ayanihan. In English, this stands for working together as a community towards a common goal. The Bayanihan spirit is what we Filipinos are widely known for and is the core essence of the Filipino culture. Although a lot of hurdles may come our way and when times are tough, we Filipinos wouldn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand to those who are in need, especially to our fellow Filipinos. In a time where putting food on the table is much more difficult due to the pandemic, there are others who rise above to lift others by setting up a community pantry. A community pantry is a food pantry set up by a community in order to help people who are in need of food. They take what they need and give what they can. It’s a system of being able to give and take and it’s built on trust and hope that no one will abuse the kindness of their community.

But, although it may seem much “pro-poor” than the Ayuda program, the middle-class and poor sectors are much more affected in the long run. According to the co-organizer of the community pantry in Barangay Concepcion Dos in Marikina City, Lexa Magat, in an interview with Grid Magazine, the pantry has been struggling to match their daily supply with the demand.

She says that the community pantry receives 50-150 people per day and roughly P12,000 is needed to accommodate 50 people. The pantries are fueled by private donations that came from the pockets of the members of the community and not government aid.

Therefore, there is no guarantee that stocks will last. These people who donate food are also struggling from the pandemic and the lockdown which is not very ideal if we make community pantries sustainable only with the help of middle-class people because soon enough, every single one of us will have nothing to donate anymore.

We can’t deny the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected lives all around the world, especially here in the Philippines. Also, another fact that we can’t deny is that the Philippine Government has a lot of lapses and issues regarding its response to the pandemic. Since the ongoing pandemic and lockdowns, millions of unemployed and starving Filipinos have intensely increased. As a result, a lot of citizens have encountered financial problems and low resources for their needs. Hence, the Ayuda Program was developed by the government for the purpose of assisting the people in need with the use of the country’s funds. But why did some people feel the need to set up a pantry even when the government has its Ayuda program already? Are community pantries more sustainable and effective than the government’s program?

How It All Started

With that being said, there are now over 350 community pantries set up around the country. In places with high poverty rates, where people have little to no access to nutritious food, some pantries work together with food banks, a non-profit that stores millions of pounds of food surplus from different food manufacturers. However, others don’t have any connections to food banks or any other non-governmental organization that will supply them food. So in order for them to gather food, they work like grassroots initiatives where neighbors are asked to donate a small weekly fee to sustain the pantry in exchange for access. While other pantries work without rules, anyone is free to give what they can and take what they need.

Action and Distribution

To recall everything that has happened for the last few months, the government ratified an emergency subsidy program in its Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (Ayuda program) in order to aid the Filipinos during the pandemic. It was said that 18 million low-income families are to be given around 5,000.00 PHP to 8,000.00 PHP a month for two months, April and May 2020 respectively, and the government had 200,000,000 PHP to fund the program. Moreover, in March 2021, the government stated that they will give out P1000.00 each to 22.9 million poor Filipino people, with a maximum of P 4000.00 per family. However, during the first few months of its implementation, the distribution of the ayuda (goods) was very slow which was an oversight. During this time where people deeply needed financial aid and goods to survive, the goods and money were distributed late and unfairness was quite rampant during that time. In its purpose to cater to millions of Filipinos who were gravely affected by the pandemic, the action seemed only to benefit the minority of those in that state of life. Also, the guidelines of the distribution were quite vague and unclear. This then led people to f|ock towards where the goods were distributed without observing proper social distancing and protocols.

With community pantries on the other hand, this started not so long ago during this year. Although this started late compared to the Ayuda Program, this has actually helped and catered to those who are really in need of food and those who are below par. Distribution and stocks depended on the donations from other people, but it was still quick compared to the aforementioned program because people tend to only take what they need and either leave or donate what they don’t need. With this type of system, those who are poor have benefited from this. But are these community pantries actually for the poor or for the privileged?

Transparency, the Privileged, and “Pro-poor”

In regards to the Ayuda Program, the budget was not quite clear on where it actually went. Millions of families haven’t received their goods and have appealed, yet only a minority of them have actually received theirs. We can’t deny that those who actually got their share were either privileged enough to be heard or were lucky enough to be catered by the program. With that, a lot of Filipinos are still in dire need of food and cash, especially those who are actually in the lowest state of life.

On the other side of the coin, community pantries are actually much “propoor” than the Ayuda Program. These pantries are proven to help those who are definitely in need with the various stories that a lot of people have shared not only to their family and friends but also to the netizens of social media as well. This then caused a ripple effect that sparked a lot of people to start their own community pantries in their community

The initiative definitely sparked hope in a lot of people and it highlighted the Bayanihan spirit of the Filipinos. It was such a wholesome act that it inspired others to do the same and show true solidarity not only for the people but also for the animals that are in need during this pandemic. Even those who sell taho, kakanin, baked goods, and other cooked food for a living displayed their merchandise on the community pantries for free. It showed how a little act of kindness could spark a thousand. Community pantries are beneficent, convenient, and a good save. It has helped us develop a system that is grounded with compassion and trust. This has also further developed and improved our values and our culture in becoming a better one. Hopefully, with this simple act of kindness and concept, it would help develop us into an improved society that is compassionate and caring.

However, since it can’t be sustainable with just private donations from middleclass people, it is not enough to address the hunger caused by the lockdown nor will it help every single person in need. It is still important to remember that the government should play a bigger role in addressing the hunger issue. It is and will always be the obligation and responsibility of the government to look after its citizens especially in a time like this. If this goes on without asking for accountability from the government, more and more people will think that it’s the organizers’ responsibility to feed and look after everyone and this will cause chaos in society.

The Other Side

Despite its goals to fill the lapses of the PH Gov’t and towards a less hungry Philippines, community pantries still got a lot of hate, suspicions, and criticisms. Some say that this could be used for their hidden agendas, while others would say that this can be used politically, especially when the elections are quite near. Also, there are people that might take advantage of it and hoard goods to satisfy their own selfishness and greed.

Although this may seem absurd, we can’t deny the actual possibilities of this happening since people are still people with an evil side of their own. It is up to us on how to control these sides of ours. One example is the woman who was dismayed and lashed out after she and the others ran out of stocks of food in Talon Community Pantry in Las Piñas even after waiting for so long. She said that the organizers made them look stupid for hoping and waiting in line. It is quite understandable that she got disappointed however, community pantries came from private donations and the organizers don’t have unlimited money in order to restock the food. She should understand that it is not the organizers’ obligation to feed everyone. They are here to help and make things a little bit easier with the best of their abilities but that does not mean that they are compelled to feed everyone.

Within just a matter of days, community pantries faced red-tagging from a Facebook post of Peace Philippines, a youth-led organization claiming to be advocating for peace was shared by the National Task Force to End Local Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) and at least 8 other Facebook pages and profiles allegedly linked to the police. Community pantries were labeled as a weapon of the communists to recruit members. Citizens were outraged by this absurdity and said that they wouldn’t have to rely on private donations and community pantries if the Ayuda Program of the government was enough. The NTFELCAC said that if their only reason is to give food then why do they have to mention the government? They are so threatened that a lot of people decided to help, were more successful in doing so, and still demand accountability from the government’s lack of support that they have to use threats and compromise the volunteers’ and organizers’ safety.

Above all, truth be told, there will be no perfect solution to solve hunger, financial instability, or even the pandemic itself. Although community pantries are quite effective right now, we still can’t tell if it’s going to be sustainable in the long run. These pantries still depend on donations and kind-hearted people, and not on a firm budget.

Also, it consists of the trust between people and their self-control for desire and greed.

However, what we can do to help our situation better is to voice out our opinions that are beneficial to the development of our country and to hold our government and officials accountable. In addition, we need to do our part as citizens of this country as well which is to observe proper protocols and to stay at home as much as possible to help refrain from contracting and spreading the virus. In this way, we don’t have to depend on community pantries anymore and we get to be the change that we aspire to be; for a better change, a better community, and a better Philippines.

The first community pantry in the Philippines was first set up on Maginhawa Street, Quezon City on April 14 by 26-year-old Ana Patricia Non. In an interview with CNN Philippines, Patricia said that even when she was greatly affected by the lockdown and only had enough for the day’s expenses, she couldn’t stop thinking about the people who don’t have the luxury to stay at home because their daily food depended on their livelihood. So after the lockdown, she set up the community pantry to help ease the hunger of Filipinos who are going through difficult times. The said pantry was posted on Facebook and later on, more and more people in the Philippines set up their own food pantries to help their communities.

The academic year 2020-2021 itself was full of unforeseen events. As the COVID-19 virus kept on spreading throughout the world, all of us were kept in isolation and quarantine. Although most of us thought that by this time we would be returning to our normal lives with no masks, face shields, and alcohol, that still wouldn’t be possible as of the moment. Because of such circumstances, we continue to transition and adapt to the online world and the new normal. May it be students, educators, or even some part of the working force, the internet and social media now have a greater impact on our lives compared to before. Also, our education and the majority of our social interactions are held via KHS Silid, Zoom, Google Meet, and other online platforms. With such conditions, most of us can’t live without the internet and it has now become an essential part of our daily lives.

NOTE

Let us also continue to voice out our opinions and thoughts that are for the better of everyone and our society. Always remember that although one voice may not be heard by the whole world, but with the help of the other voices and the collective, we could start, make, and be the change. Our voices and unity are what the world needs right now. So, let us not be frightened nor should we let other people silence us for standing up and preaching what’s right.

C

OVID-19 has brought drastic changes to everyone’s life across the globe. There were millions of swayed lives, thousands of deaths, and hundreds of mortifying damages. Regardless of the world covered with sadness and thorns, we must strive to look forward to the silver linings because in every rain grows a f|ower of hope. Through this, it allows many of us to view a brighter perspective in life. We have moved forward, adjusted to the new setting, and still tried our best to gaze on the simple things life could offer.

Being appointed as the Student Council president during this new normal is an honor and privilege I will forever cherish. Indeed, I am beyond grateful to the school administration, especially to the late Mr. Junil H. Seviola, for entrusting a challenging yet exciting role. None of our projects would be a success without the help and trust of everyone in the council.

With that, I would also like to express my appreciation to all my fellow members for assisting me in this rollercoaster ride.

The Student Coordinating Council’s mission has always been to serve and encourage Konghuanians to share their light and be role models for change. We commit ourselves to inspire the student body and help them to be aware of important announcements. Despite the limitations, we still ensured that everyone’s talents were showcased virtually through the Frontliners’ Appreciation Week and Feb-ibig Week. Furthermore, we made sure to upload quotes and bible verses that will motivate students to work harder, never lose hope, and be reminded of the Lord’s undying love. Our goal as an organization is to let our fellow students speak up and use their voices for the voiceless. With that being said, selected students from different levels shared their experiences and challenges in the new setup. They were also able to share messages and reflections concerning 2020’s ride of tragic events. The council hopes that the Online Leadership Training conducted last February 5, 2021, will encourage more students to enhance their leadership skills and serve their fellow students wholeheartedly. It may be a hurdle to balance both being a student leader and academics, but our leadership involvement will always be worth the experience! We learned how to manage our time, connect with different personalities, raise our ideas, and know the significance of cooperation and teamwork. Being a student leader will allow us to step out of our comfort zone and learn how to speak for ourselves and others.

Konghuanians, despite the circumstances we face, we must continue to believe in the beauty of life, work hard to reach our goals, keep the faith and always trust the Lord, the orchestrator of all things. We may fall and fail a thousand times, but everything will sail through when we love and place Him in the center of our lives. We must offer our successes and failures to Him, extend our patience, and practice humility. Obstacles occur for a reason, so we must stand and face these with no anger in our hearts. No matter how unfortunate the situation may be, never plant violence and revenge because things will surely be better in the Almighty’s perfect time. Hence, we must collect the stones of hurdles that life has thrown upon us and create a beautiful castle that will inhabit a peaceful life we all deserve. We must grow from our own mistakes and learn to acknowledge that everything we have, experience, and see are gifts from God. In this dark phase of time, we must allow ourselves to strive for our genuine happiness to be carriers of love and hope. Konghuanians, if we want to be happy, we need to stop trying to be perfect. We need to grow f|owers of positivity in ourselves and share the light we received from God with others.

Konghuanians Celebrate English Month with

.O.P.E. Amidst Pandemic – Harnessing Oral and Written Proficiency in English, the theme for this academic year’s English Month celebration. Kong Hua School held the annual English Culmination last January 29, 2021, through the official Facebook page of Kong Hua School to celebrate the program and highlight the significance of the universal language, English. The whole Konghuanian community, paid full attention to this awaited event. Going by the theme of this annual occasion, “HOPE,” Konghuanians were given the opportunity to showcase their talents in English such as speaking, listening, reading, writing, and editing. All of these talents were all especially focused on giving hope to everyone in this time of the pandemic. With the current situation that we are facing today, hope is a powerful word used to console and let people know that there is still light despite the darkness. Konghuanians were all able to show their excellence in the respective activities per grade level. The students served as inspirations to continue life, give out the message of hope, and distinguish the English language. The event itself was wholesome. Outputs by students from the E.C.E. to the Senior High School Department were shown during the live stream. The audience exhibited different emotions while watching the show.

T

he Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year is an annual celebration that inaugurates the turn of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It comes on a new moon which signifies the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Hence, it is also known as the Spring Festival. An animal zodiac symbolizes each year following the 12-year cycle of animal signs. For the year 2021, it falls on the 12th of February, which according to the lunar calendar is the Year of the Ox. On the 11th of February 2021, Kong Hua School's first-ever virtual Chinese New Year celebration commenced. The event started with the school's yearly thanksgiving mass succeeded by an ancestral veneration held via live streaming on Kong Hua School's Center For Christian Formation's Facebook page. On the next day, the school organized an online program showcasing Lunar New Year traditions along with China's vast, rich, and colorful culture through the students' talents. The show kicked off with the charming preschoolers' Classic Chinese Poems and dance presentations followed by The Trio's angelic voices with their cover of the song “Wo De Ge Sheng Li.”

Subsequently, The Pentatone rendered a song about brotherhood which once again captivated the people's hearts. Afterward, the school took everyone along a journey in time through a snippet compilation of yesterday's Chinese New Year celebrations.

Nostalgia filled each one as they relived and reminisced performances from the previous years.

The event concluded with the awarding ceremony for the various contests prepared by the Chinese Department. The competitions held were as follows: Clay Art Making, Lantern Making, Ang Pao Making, Digital, and Traditional Poster Making Contests. These activities exhibited the Konghuanians' extraordinary creativity, skills, and capabilities. Although this year's festivities are unlike the usual, the pandemic did not hamper Kong Hua School's customary Lunar New Year celebration. The entire community welcomed another year with high spirits hoping and praying for good health, safety, and prosperity.

Leaders in the Making: An Online LTC in the New Normal Written By Callie Gabrielle T. Sabal

T

he young generation is the future of our country, so we must nurture their abilities to lead. With that being said, this led Kong Hua School to conduct an Online Leadership Training Camp (OLTC) last February 5, 2021. A student claimed that “It may be online, but the activities were still enjoyable. “Even during this hard time we can still have entertaining activities like the Amazing Race.” another claimed.

The Online Leadership Training started with an icebreaker activity of Scavenger Hunt followed by an orientation from Ms. Kaye Marie D. Zambas and the late Mr. Junil H. Seviola.

Ms. Zambas’ discussion emphasized the mind, the eyes, the brain, and the heart of a leader. The discussion was then followed with a self-refIection. Then, Mr. Seviola started his conference focusing on the actions and the hands of a leader. After both discussions, there was a lunch break. Afterwards, the afternoon activities followed such as the “Amazing Race” planned by the KHS Student Coordinating Council (SCC). The participants were then divided into seven groups that had their respective SCC officer as their facilitator.

Each group had their own individual Zoom meeting. There were seven activities like trivias and puzzles that encouraged the use of the values of teamwork, analysis, and critical thinking. Unfortunately, they did not have time to finish all 7 activities. Before officially ending the Online Leadership Training Camp, they had a short meeting about the project pitch.

After the program, the day came to a close with the OLTC ending successfully as the pupils logged out of the video conference.

After 2 months of waiting, the last day of the OLTC finally happened. On April 30, 2021, the participants were divided into groups, and were asked of their plans for the following school year if they were to be a part of the Student Coordinating Council (SCC). This was then followed by a votation which would determine the grade level representatives for the following academic year. Instead of the usual two-party system, there were three parties instead namely LEGO, MERAKI, and YUGTO. At last, the first OLTC concluded with the announcement of the members of each campaign in the SCC’s Facebook Page.

Subsequently, on May 14 of 2021, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., the SCC Elections were held via jotform which can be found through the students’ KHS Silid accounts. It was then followed by the announcement of winners through the SCC’s Facebook page last May 17, 2021.

The students had a productive month as there were educational and inspirational symposiums that were held through Zoom that could be applied in the daily and future lives of the students. The symposiums presented topics about the contribution of research in nation-building, the role of young entrepreneurs in reviving the economy devastated by the pandemic, the role of the youth and social media in the success of the vaccination program of the government and in disaster readiness and risk reduction, and the 500 years of Christianity.

Furthermore, last April 8, the senior high school students prepared videos showcasing their lives in their respective strands. In the middle of the presentations, there were fun games filled with trivia questions about different categories held in Kahoot and Zoom. The program ended with a spectacular band performance performed by the “Jam Band” whose members are Kong Hua School alumni. The Senior High School festival was a success and was up to mark for a first-time event where everybody had a fun-filled learning experience.

Physical Classes Should Push Through For The Academic Year 2021-2022.

GOVERNMENT SIDE Students Learn Better When They Learn Hands-on.

According to Aristotle, “For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” It is a given fact that when we learn a skill or anything in general, it is best if we do it hands-on; academic learning is no exception. As an alternative, most educational institutions have resorted to online learning. Though the new learning approach tries to mimic the classroom setup as much as possible, even the most advanced technologies have limitations. Therefore, leading to the argument that online classes are not as effective as physical classes. Many factors can prove this point such as the lack of teacher supervision, dishonesty, a non-learning conducive environment, and the presence of distractions. Online classes may also be unsuitable for people with certain learning types and needs.

A Department of Education (DepEd) report presented last March 3, 2021 to the Senate on the performance of Grades 1 to 12 students showed that about 99 percent of students nationwide obtained passing grades in the first quarter of the academic year 2021, where most schools started to incorporate online learning. These findings seem to be unrealistic considering the challenges brought by distance learning. The unconvincing passing rates alone leaves the public to ask, “Are students truly learning?” Dear readers, are you truly learning?

The Mental Health and Socialization Of The Students Are At Risk To ensure that students receive quality education, the learning environment of the students is to be accounted for. Classroom learning has been an effective way for students to learn academic lessons and social skills. Humans are known to be social beings and crave support and a sense of importance from others. However, during a time where emotional interaction is most needed, socialization can only go as far as joining video conferences. Research shows that teenagers who do share their emotions and talk about their feelings in a specific way are less likely to get depression. With the stress given by the pandemic and schoolwork, students are deprived of the outlet to express their emotions to schoolmates, which can sabotage their mental health. Distance learning lessens classroom interaction drastically which leads to social isolation and ultimately, mental health issues.

Lack of Synergy between Teachers and Students In Online Class The connection between a student and teacher plays an immense part in a child’s academic success. For a good teacher-student interaction, both parties need to participate to develop good communication. However, because of distance learning, communicating with others has become a great challenge. During this time, students hardly get feedback on their performance which is vital to the academic growth of the learners. Without remarks on their progress, how will students know where to improve, or what aspects to work on? Education is based on development and progression, but if feedback to accomplish such is lacking, is the academic year truly about learning or merely about getting by?

o Risk? Physical Classes or Online Classes?

PARAMETERS:

Physical classes refer to the conventional classroom setup wherein students and teachers interact face-to-face in a school campus. While online classes refer to electronically conducted learning that is done on the internet for teacher/student interaction and the distribution of class materials. The arguments are based on data collected from international and local sources. The area of influence of the motion is only in the Philippines.

OPPOSITION SIDE Opening Of Physical Classes ≠ Flattened Curve Although most students find physical classes more effective when it comes to academic learning, most cannot deny the fact that the COVID-19 curve has not been flattened yet. According to the COVID Tracker from the Department of Health (DOH), there are a total of 1,054,983 cases where 71,472 are active as of May 2, 2021. With this information, the Philippines is still not ready for physical classes and must focus on the recovery of COVID-19 patients more. In other countries such as Thailand, schools have closed down after reopening due to the surge in cases, which shows that the number of infections may arise if the country shifts to physical classes. Staying at home and continuing online classes is a much safer way of learning without risking one’s well-being. Furthermore, even if physical classes are to be approved and safety measures are followed, it does not a hundred percent ensure the students’ safety. Learning should be done in a safe environment and not where several lives are in risk of danger.

No To Physical Classes Yet, Herd Immunity Is Still To Be Achieved As much as the people need support emotionally and mentally, interactions should remain virtual as vaccinations are still scarce. In addition, the limited supply of vaccines administered in the Philippines makes achieving herd immunity impossible. As of May 4, 2021, there are only 4,040,600 doses delivered, which is still not enough to cater to the Philippines’ population of 108 million people. The roll-out of vaccines is laboured and administering these to the Filipinos is complicated because of the lack of information which makes people doubt its effectiveness and reliability; thus, being one of the causes of the delay in vaccination. Everyone should also take into account the students below 18, since no vaccines (as of the moment) have been permitted to them making it harder for most of the students to be fully vaccinated by the start of the academic year 2021-2022.

Calling the Shots Yes, there are a lot of hurdles and challenges with online classes as it is only limited to certain features accessible for the learners. But amidst all of this, parents, guardians, or anyone funding the student’s fees should have the choice on whether they choose to send their child to physical classes or not. The public should take into account that most Filipinos have been affected by the pandemic, meaning their financial capability is very limited.

Studies show that one-quarter of total employment in the Philippines is likely to be disrupted by the impact of COVID-19 on the economy and labor market, either through decreased earnings and working hours or complete job loss. If they are given the choice, it could lessen their expenses, help them budget their money, and could make ends meet. Also, as a family, their health should always come first. Parents and guardians would feel at ease knowing that their child is safely at home and could easily be monitored. Ensuring that everyone is in good condition and safe is a very crucial matter and the people should be reminded that there is nothing more important than prioritizing one’s health.

Hi, Jhan! Thank you for sharing your challenging online school experience with us. About what you shared, may I ask what your reasons are for the delays and what are the things you have tried so far to address this matter? By recognizing those obstacles, you will have a basis for why you are not able to do your tasks on time. Maybe a good activity schedule could also work best for you to attain your goal which is on-time task submission.

You can start by writing down all your tasks and activities for the week, including school and non-school-related activities. Indeed, we need to prioritize urgent and important tasks. Do try to keep in mind these three things: Do, Plan, and Eliminate. The first part “Do” means to apply the "First things first" method or DO the urgent and important tasks first. Next is to PLAN ahead of time the tasks that are not urgent but important. Lastly, ELIMINATE or at least minimize your time for those non-urgent or non-important tasks and activities.

Talking about your dreams and aspirations might also help to rediscover YOUR LIFE'S PURPOSE AND “WHYS”.

Anyways hi, I'm a student with very bad mental health and throughout the school year, it's been getting worse. I've been pressured by myself and many others and it's been painful for a person like me.

I have been noticing symptoms of ADD (attention deficit disorder) and anxiety in myself everyday. I can't focus well even though I try, I'm too sensitive to criticism and more. I don't think others consider that some people– even though they look stable– are struggling with something.

I have considered committing suicide a lot, thinking that I'm just a heavyweight on my family's and school's shoulders. I've had weeks of just sitting and trying not to sleep because I'm scared for the next day. I've had breakdowns. I want to move but my body doesn't want to. I'm physically weak.

I have so much unfinished homework to do and my mother is counting on me and it's making me very guilty. She's working so hard for someone who just skips class and sits awake at night doing nothing.

Having distress for a non-specific reason makes an individual out of focus, which then affects their mental health. And commonly, the happy or free-spirited facade unveils turmoil and combat inside. With respect to what you have shared, I would like to know if you have tried to talk about it with your mom or friends? Having someone to talk to, though not necessarily soliciting advice, is a great help. It is favorable to have at least a good listener with us. These are also not just limited to people who are close to us. They can be other people like your guidance counselor in school. Considering that this might be challenging for you at first. However, for sure, you will eventually find comfort and trust, especially that you mentioned being anxious and lacking in focus. The Guidance Counselor might be your great choice or go-to person to seek effective ways to manage your anxieties and other things that bother you. I am glad that you are sending this to us because that also implies that you want help. Please know that there are people who are willing to listen, help, and be with you. Nevertheless, the school also preserves its policy about school uniforms. As of the moment, uniforms are still prescribed based on a student's biological sex. Thus, students are expected to follow this regulation about school uniforms. Although cross-dressing is not limited when it comes to self-expression, it also comes with the responsibility of being aware of when and where to do so. Despite this matter, I am optimistic that you will soon find happiness in being who you are.

rade 10- what a journey these four years of high school have been. As a batch, we have ventured throughout the phases of the Indestructible Armies, the Luminous Griffins, the Corinthian Thestrals, and finally in our last year of junior high school as Grade 10 students.

Although, it is truly melancholic to be labeled as just “Grade 10” this year. Looking back, our batch has projected an awful amount of unforgettable moments both towards ourselves and the people who watched us grow and f|ourish into successful individuals. Hence, memorable performances such as The Passion Play, Fountrams cheer dances, chants, acquaintance parties, and numerous talent shows and competitions were brought into existence. Time certainly f|ies when you are having fun.

dancing, and especially the acting of various members of our beloved batch illuminated the St. Candida Auditorium’s stage to a whole different level. It aches to think that as a team that’s been together for more than 10 years, our last joint performances were a futile attempt due to this dreadful pandemic.

Initially and even in the process, our interests, personalities, and aspirations were distinguishable. Some of us prefer being physically challenged and some prefer mentally focused areas. This split us into sports and other competitions making us a versatile batch. Every meeting, you would have those quietly laughing and the serious, workaholic students highlighting our contrasting personalities. Regardless of this, we have shown great togetherness and solidarity as we continued to stand by each other.

There have also been countless times wherein we would work, practice, and rehearse for so long to the point where the skies will get dark.

However, we would still continue with our phone’s flashlights and waze our way through the dark classrooms to pick up our bags. Having retreats, going to the canteen, visiting other classrooms, waiting for others to arrive at school, and having randomly formed groups in the waiting area are things that we never thought would change this academic year. We never even had a chance to have a physical retreat since grade school. This school year certainly wasn’t the way we all hoped and planned for. Clear laughter, jokes both corny and witty, and everyday conversations have been reduced to hearing them only through the audio of our different devices, and because of muted mics and choppy receiving ends, we cannot physically hear or see the reaction of one another. Even with this, we know that the others are smiling and laughing when we do too.

Back in grade nine, before the pandemic started, our batch was looking forward to MAPEH Day’s Tinikling, hip hop, and contemporary dance.

There we would see leaders crying, classmates excited for the early dismissal, and the immediate transformation from students to dancers. It was truly a fun experience getting to mingle with students from different sections, just like our Passion Play performance back in 8th grade.

The play was a wonderful project that heartily solidified our bond as a batch. The singing, the

Batch 2020-2021, it was a wonderful ride and journey with you all. We cannot help but tear up writing this year’s Grade 10’s page as this ending is unfair and fast for all of us. We may be stepping into different bridges, but once, we shared a path. Let us never forget this wonderful book of memories we, at one point, created. We love you and the physical divide brought by the pandemic will not change this. Wishing for all the blessings and success. We are all in this together.

ur journey began six years ago, we were very different; from the things we did to the things we liked. It was a wild adventure with new friends, and a new family. Who would’ve known that the tower we had built used to have a very shaky start? We used to be split up into different cliques, some fit in while others were left out. You may be wondering how a group of acquaintances could have become a family. The answer is simpler than you think, it was a bond forged from the flames of camaraderie, and quenched with the heart of understanding.

Michael J. Fox once said, “Family is not an important thing, it is everything.” When the wind blew and the storm came, we always had each other to lean on. We all have different sides of ourselves; as classmates, some excelled in academics while others excelled in sports. As friends, some enjoyed sightseeing while others played games. We all had differences that made each of us unique and like a puzzle; if one piece was missing, it wouldn't be complete. Time sure flew by and we have been through a lot together. We’ve gone through various phases such as the “Roaring Tigers”, “Ferocious Beasts”, ”Midnight Hydras”, ”Celestial Olympians”, and the “Chthonic Corsairs”. We have grown in the process and although the name we used to represent ourselves has changed, the family we have become has not.

The beauty of life is that it is unpredictable, it was truly a memorable journey. It's unfortunate that the day we part ways and grow further into the people we are meant to be has come sooner than we would have liked. The joy and pain we have shared seems like it was only yesterday. Who would’ve known that we would be spending our last year in Kong Hua School the way we did? The pandemic has split us apart, yet our ties remain ever strong.

The time has come, and we will all move onto different scenes and do different things. We may study in different colleges, move to different cities, and some might even migrate to a different country, but the memories we have made together will always be with us; from the happy moments to the sad ones, it was a journey we may never forget. To the people who made our journey memorable, and to the people who walked alongside us, thank you for everything. The Grade 12 batch of A.Y. 2020-2021 is now signing off.

I think that this year’s online learning setup is very adjustable in my opinion. Yes, it was hard to move from face-to-face classes to online learning since the announcement was abrupt, but it went smoothly nonetheless. Though, as we continued with our journey, most of us, including myself, have already adjusted to this “new normal.” I also find this academic year’s online learning setup as an experience; an experience we can use as a solution to problems in the future. Besides all that, this online learning setup is very simple and is easy to use. And this is why they say, “The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.”

If I were to choose from either online or face-to-face classes, I would go for face-to-face simply because I prefer being with my friends rather than just seeing them on my screen.

I think it has allowed us to venture into new things. It made us think of countless possible ways of communication. It may not always be ups and most of us will always favor face-to-face classes, but considering the situation, this is not too bad either. Things like having fast or unli access to ppts/discussions, working on your own time, and others are the advantages only possible through online learning, and I guess it is one of the things that I consider beneficial in this situation.

In all honesty, this year's online learning setup came with a lot of difficulties. It felt like uncharted waters to me and was something that I didn't think I would ever encounter. Not to mention, the several important factors that I can't control like the internet speed, occasional electricity loss, and difficulties with the school's website. Despite that, I still feel the need to do good at school. Also, the online learning environment came with the perks of teaching me to be able to learn things independently. I won't deny that it is difficult, but at the end of the day, I feel like persevering despite the difficulties.

Certain qualities and traits are required such as being self-reliant, patient, and most of all responsible for the sake of creating something greater than themselves.

Being an entrepreneur isn’t limited by your age.

Anyone can be an entrepreneur so long as they have what it takes to be one. Being an entrepreneur may be tough but being a successful one has great benefits. There are a lot of contributions that are made by entrepreneurs such as being able to add to national income. Entrepreneurs don’t just create new businesses, but also create social change.

Because of that, those are some of the causes of the community’s development.

hristianity has become the world’s largest religion with over 2 billion followers. Based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, it has three major Christian groups: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox. In the Philippines, we are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity on our shores. On March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday, Father Pedro de Valderrama celebrated the first Catholic Mass on the island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte. He was part of an expedition led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who was under the service of the Spanish Crown. From then on, Christianity spread like wildfire to the rest of the Philippines, making us the 5th largest Christian-majority country in the world.

The beauty of Christianity lies in a purpose-driven life. In our lives full of uncertainties, Christianity gives us focus– an anchor in our uncharted, often unpredictable journey.

In times like ours today, an ongoing pandemic, people tend to lose focus on their faith and purpose, but Christianity lives in our hearts and our deeds. We see countless people helping out other people in times of great need regardless of race, color, or creed. In a crisis we are experiencing today, we see a light of hope for humanity. And so, even when the going gets tough, we must stay faithful, joyful, and hopeful because we know and trust that Christ is with us and will never leave us. Christianity is here, as it ever was, holding our faith together by living our lives as Christ has lived, that is, a life of purpose.

Christian values are something that I dearly treasure in my life. As an 11-year-old kid, my family, friends, and most importantly, my religion, Christianity, infIuenced my values. Christian values such as Faith, integrity, and love serve as a compass pointing me in the right direction of my life. Faith affected my life that whenever problems or misunderstandings arise, I trust that the good and right will prevail.

Secondly, integrity means always being true to yourself. Having integrity taught me the value of honesty in my thoughts, words, and actions towards my family and the society surrounding me. Lastly, in my views, love is the core Christian value. Without love, we would not be here today. As stated in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believed in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Indeed, being a Christian and accepting Christ has transformed my life profoundly.

As a Christian, I think that the beauty of life is God. I always thank Him for a new day and a chance to redeem myself for my mistakes. God guides us to His Kingdom and He is always with us. “You do not look for God, God comes to you.” (From Msgr. Esteban Lo) Though this is a simple sentence, it has a complex and nice meaning to it. A lot of us ask ourselves “Where is God?”, and “Why is He not helping us?” According to Msgr. Lo, “God will come to us”. We are His eyes, ears, arms and legs on Earth. For Him to help us, we should start to help others and take action first. “Do your best and God will do the rest.”

The Lord commands us: “Just as I have loved you, you must also love another.” A little love can change a million lives, especially now when the world is literally locked down. “I am a Christian, and this I profess until the hour of my death and for God I shall give my life. o you think you came back after circling the abyss? Don’t get me wrong. This is not about astrology. I’m asking about you; about how you and I are the most special of all.

What is difficult?

The stars don’t always appear to us at night, just like the sun sometimes doesn’t show up in the morning because it lets the rain shower upon us instead. In a lifetime, people of different ages will have to go through many stages of difficulty; different types of darkness, pain, and loneliness - these are just some ingredients for the recipe of life. While an optimist and a pessimist will surely have contradicting views on this matter, it is very important that you know how to deal with things. May it be a sad or a happy situation, you must know how to get a grip of reality to be able to survive. Life is not always about giggles and laughter. As we grow older, we become more aware of the forlorn figures surrounding us.

Although not many people will understand why you need to come out from hiding. There will always be a time in our lives where we are unsure of anything. We are not certain what to choose or what to do next. Even if we are full of love, we have days that we feel empty. However, you don’t need to hide. Come out and be proud of your invisible scars. Scars that you might have obtained from proving yourself worthy of peoples’ validation, acceptance, and even congratulations. While these words might rhyme, they are nothing compared to what you truly are. You are always more than your imperfections.

Have I told you?

Have I ever told you that you are amazing? Have I ever told you that you are doing great? Every so often we tend to complicate things because nobody ever told us that it’s okay to make mistakes and it’s not a sin to fail. Every day feels like a Monday. It’s because you are always worrying that you might be mistaken or you might not have done enough.

Well, let me tell you, you are enough! Being the person that everyone wants to see is very hard, but look at you, very strong and perfect. We have to train our hearts to be strong because, in reality, life is more than just a roller-coaster ride. It’s an endless journey towards our dreams. A never-ending quest for what we truly want or want to be. So, we need a strong heart to survive the journey. Just in case, remember, I have told you this.

No matter how difficult life gets, never forget that there are people who are always willing to listen to you. Be reminded that God listens to the silence of prayers and hears what our hearts truly desire. For life is always difficult when you do it alone, learn to surround yourself with people who you can trust and will help bring out the best in you.

Last July 19, early afternoon, Konghuanians received unexpected sorrowful news. Kong Hua School’s official Facebook page announced the passing of a significant faculty member, Mr. Junil H. Seviola. He was the school’s Prefect of Discipline and CLE teacher. Sir Junil was a Konghuanian close to the hearts of everyone including students, teachers, staff, and parents. The announcement of his death gained lots of attention. It was then the setting where numerous Konghuanians and non-Konghuanians expressed their grief and sympathy upon hearing the unfortunate event. Countless reactions and condolences were posted on different platforms. The day suddenly felt empty and blue.

Throughout his years of service in Kong Hua, he was one of the educators that will always have a place in the hearts of many Konghuanians. Sir Junil left a great impact on several lives, from his serious way of teaching mixed with his extraordinary humor. Because of his wholesome attitude, he was more than just a teacher to his apprentices. Most students and teachers know him by Sir Char, which is an acronym that stands for “Christ Has a Reason”. His unforeseen demise shocked the public, but just like his alias, Christ has a reason. Sir Junil’s departure from the living world is in line with God’s plans. As he would often say during his lecture, we only have to trust God above anything else. Sir Junil Seviola may have departed, but he will always be present in our hearts and minds. It is in no doubt that he is in a much peaceful place, and surely, he will invariably be watching and guiding us. Let us continue to include him in our prayers and always remember him happily.

Sir Junil is a wonderful person. Not only has he inspired me a lot with his words of wisdom but he also made us laugh with his humor. He is undeniably unforgettable.
