What’s ahead? Albany soon to be a bigger player in convention business

A

$66.5 million convention center being built in the heart of downtown Albany promises to transform the meeting business in upstate New York. Years in the works, and long stalled due to state funding delays, what’s being called the Albany Capital Center won’t open until early 2017. But the marketing of the 84,000-square-foot facility began months ago. Officials say it is vital to get the word out now to corporate meeting planners and trade show organizers because of the long lead time needed to schedule events. A transformational project, the convention center is spurring other investments nearby and will allow the city to host bigger events (it’s also part of a plan to lure major NCAA playoff games — think March Madness basketball — to the nearby Times Union Center, a 17,500-seat sports and entertainment arena). Of course, Albany isn’t the only player in New

York’s Capital Region. The greater metro area is made up of four cities. Besides Albany, there’s Schenectady, Troy and Saratoga Springs — all within 35 miles of each other. Each city has its convention spaces and hotels, and its own selling points. Albany will continue to have the largest meeting spaces after the Capital Center is built. It’s designed to connect to the nearby Empire State Plaza Convention Center and the Times Union Center to create the Capital Complex. Taken together, these three will be three times the size of any other convention center in upstate New York, according to the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau. As for complementary investments nearby, Columbia Development Cos. is turning the former Dewitt Clinton building into a 203-room Renaissance by Marriott luxury hotel. It will be directly across from the new convention center.

Why Albany? Why Saratoga? We talked to meeting planners about why they choose the Capital Region for conventions and corporate events. Here are the five most-cited answers:

1

Four downtowns—Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs— offer variety of hotels, restaurants, entertainment

2

Central location and easy access from all parts of the state

3

The growing tech sector makes it the place to be in the semiconductor industry

4

Access to state agencies; Albany is the state capital, after all

New growth equals super burst of energy n ”Whether you are

a first-time visitor or traveling back to visit family and friends, the changing face of downtown is going to put a smile on your face. Downtown Buffalo offers something for everyone, no matter where or when you visit.” Michael Schmand

Executive director, Buffalo Place Inc.

hen describing Western New York these days, the r’s have it: Revitalized. Resurgent. Rebounding. Rapidly improving. You get the picture: Good things are happening here. “There really has not been a better time for tourists and business visitors to experience Western New York, and over the next few years it is only going to get better. As many of the development projects come to completion, return visitors can have a new experience with each trip they make,” said Patrick Kaler president and CEO of Visit Buffalo Niagara, formerly the Buffalo Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our Buffalo today isn’t the same that it was a couple of years ago and certainly will be a completely new experience in another two years,” he said. Likewise in Niagara Falls, N.Y., just

By Jane Schmitt 20 minutes to the north, said John Percy, president of Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp. “There’s a new energy; it’s truly magnetic,” he said. “People are excited to talk about what’s happening in the region … what has come to fruition and what is expected. We’re seeing new hotel rooms, new companies moving into town – there’s development all over. It’s truly exciting.” From Buffalo, known as the Queen City on Lake Erie, to Niagara Falls, home of the world-famous waterfalls that attracts an estimated 8 million visitors a year, the region has widespread appeal. Visitors can count on top-notch accommodations and an endless list of things to see and do: natural wonders, an impressive arts and cultural scene, world-renowned architecture, incredible restaurants and a growing craft beer industry, wine trails, history museums, shopping and more.

For Buffalo Niagara, 2014 was a transformative year. A flurry of activity helped fuel what Kaler calls “an unprecedented, historic renaissance that presents so many opportunities,” particularly in downtown Buffalo. There’s optimism and excitement, thanks to small- and large-scale building projects that not long ago were simply a dream. Some examples: • Canalside, a 21-acre waterfront district designed to be a premier entertainment destination for dining, concerts and festivals all year long. This past December saw the opening of the Ice at Canalside, the state’s largest outdoor skating rink. Also available: curling, ice bikes and an artisan market. • The $172 million HarborCenter, which opened in fall 2014 at the foot of Main Street, is a massive hockey and entertainment complex that includes two NHL-sized hockey rinks and

Meet, Stay & Play 2015 | Upstate New York’s Executive Travel Guide Magnificent architectural details, an expanded stage and nearly 90 years of history make Shea’s Performing Arts Center a destination for theater and Broadway fans. The interior of the 1926 landmark was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Niagara Falls is comprised of three waterfalls: American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls (U.S.) and Horseshoe Falls (Canada). •

8 million people a year come from all over the world to view the falls. •

3,160 tons of water flow over the falls every second: 75,750 gallons of water per second over the American and Bridal Veil falls (U.S.) and 681,750 gallons per second over the Horseshoe Falls (Canada). •

The water falls at 32 feet per second, hitting the base of the falls with 280 tons of force at the American and Bridal Veil falls (U.S.) and 2,509 tons of force at the Horseshoe Falls (Canada). •

Niagara Falls is capable of producing more than 4 million kilowatts of electricity, which is shared by the U.S. and Canada. The American and Bridal Veil falls were turned off in 1969 by the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers to study the effects of erosion. •

The water that flows over the falls is at 25 to 50 percent capacity at any given time. •

The first person to go over the falls in a barrel was 63-year-old schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor on Oct. 24, 1901. The Cave of the Winds attraction at the falls is torn down and rebuilt every year.

Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States. The formation of Niagara Falls can be traced back more than 12,000 years to the end of the last glacial period.

Niagara Falls does not freeze in the winter. However, the flow of water was reduced to a mere trickle for a few hours on March 29, 1848, because of an ice jam upstream in the Niagara River. Four of the five Great Lakes drain into the Niagara River (Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie) before emptying into Lake Ontario. These five Great Lakes make up almost one-fifth of the world’s fresh water supply.

At one time, P.T. Barnum wanted to turn Goat Island (in Niagara Falls State Park) into a circus ground. •

Energy from the Niagara River has been harnessed for hydroelectric power generation since the mid-18th century.

training centers. Connected to First Niagara Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres, the complex has a restaurant, sports bar and a soon-to-becompleted Marriott hotel. In January, HarborCenter earned rave reviews from USA Hockey after hosting the IIHF Women’s U18 World Championship. On tap this year: hosting the NHL pre-scouting combine, the IHF World Sled Hockey Championship, youth tournaments and numerous special events. • The trendy Larkinville District offers live music, a farmers market, food trucks and specialty shopping. • The $15 million RiverWorks project in the city’s Cobblestone district is a growing center of activity with hockey and curling rinks and an indoor derby rink. Adding to the resurgence is a blossoming of the area as a hightech hub of medical research and entrepreneurialism. There’s more to come, thanks to public and private partnerships that are breathing new life info old industrial buildings and brownfields. Next year, for example, will mark the opening of SolarCity, a 1 millionsquare-foot manufacturing facility of solar panels for the global market. Explore & More Children’s Museum, meanwhile, plans a move from its longtime home in East Aurora to the Buffalo waterfront. A centerpiece project in downtown Niagara Falls is a $150 million initiative to transform part of the Rainbow Centre Mall into Wonder Falls. The project will include a 300-room hotel, indoor waterpark, sports bar, museum and other attractions. Not far away is Fashion Outlets of Niagara, which recently completed a major expansion that added 30 stores to the shopping mix. And to the south, the city of Jamestown is putting together $32 million in public and private funds to develop the National Comedy Center that will tie in with the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Museum & Center for Comedy. “We’ve seen steady growth in this region … There have been significant improvements downtown, especially (the) waterfront and Larkinville,” said Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, president and CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership “There’s even more development on the horizon that will be attractive for visitors.” Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, another economic development organization, lauds the area as a hot spot for business investment and says the ripple effect is a stronger convention and tourism trade. “Why are tourists and business groups choosing to come here? I think there are a number of reasons,”

said President and CEO Thomas Kucharski. “The myriad of recreational activities that accompany our four seasons is well-documented, as is our architectural heritage and its value on that segment of the tourism industry. Having Niagara Falls, one of the top 100 wonders in the world, in our backyard has always been a point of pride and a huge draw, as well. More recently, though, the state’s unprecedented commitment to Upstate New York, and our region specifically, has put us under a national spotlight that has drawn significant attention. People are hearing the great story that is Buffalo Niagara and they want to come and see it for themselves.” Said the Washington Post in July: “In Buffalo, N.Y., a new vitality is giving the once-gritty city wings.” Percy, of the Falls tourism corporation, said the optimism in Erie County extends to Niagara County, as well. He predicts a similar renaissance and said there’s a brighter light shining on the regional mix of attractions for business travelers and tourists alike. “”For people who have never been here, we want to open up their eyes to the wonderful gems we have to offer,” Percy said. “This entire region is so rich in product. It’s so in-depth, with history and heritage and cultural and dining options. It’s a whole gamut of products that make up the visitor’s experience. You can find it all here. We have so much richness to showcase.” Niagara University professor Eddie Friel directs the Niagara Global Tourism Institute, which opened in September on Old Falls Street. He urges visitors to spend time exploring Buffalo Niagara and beyond. “To just come to Niagara Falls and then move on is to not see what the rest of Western New York has available. And the other issue would be if people come to Buffalo but don’t come to Niagara Falls, then they’re missing out on the full Western New York experience. And that, I think, would be a shame,” Friel said. “We may have separate identities but we are one community. We must think as one community and behave as one community and promote as one community. I think that’s an important point.” The sheer diversity of what’s available lures people from all points, he said. “It’s the diversity that makes it such an attractive place. It doesn’t matter what your interest is, Western New York can satisfy it,” Friel said. “Of course, the awesome (waterfalls) is on everybody’s bucket list but then the question becomes: What’s next? What else can I see?”

Sackets Harbor, site of a War of 1812 battle, offers a bit of history at its historic visitor center and battlegrounds. The quaint village has a wide selection of eateries and unique shops and boutiques. Greater Binghamton The Greater Binghamton area’s location at the junctions of I-81, I-88, and NY Route 17 (future I-86) makes it easily accessible for all attendees from any point within the Northeast. Add to that its 2,500 first-class, affordable overnight accommodations and modern meeting/exhibit facilities, and you have all the ingredients for a successful event. Planners of meetings and conferences, large and small, can find the perfect fit here. Ranging from convention hotels with multiple breakout rooms to the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena or the Binghamton University Events Center, the area can accommodate any size group. The region also has numerous distinctive facilities and venues to choose from for both indoor and outdoor activities: Mountain Top Grove Banquet Facilities, the conference center at the Greater Binghamton Airport, the 4,000-seat Binghamton High School Alumni Field, and the computer-aided decision room at the Binghamton University School of Management. Greater Binghamton has more than 250 restaurants, from locally owned and operated eateries to nationally recognized chains. Attractions in the area include the Roberson Museum & Science Center, the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, the Phelps Mansion Museum, Windy Hill Candle Factory/Candyland, and the Cider Mill. Oswego /Lake Ontario/Thousand Islands Anglers flock to Oswego County for fishing A opportunities ranging from trolling on Lake Ontario for trophy trout and salmon to angling for steelhead and brown trout on the Salmon and Oswego rivers. An experienced fleet of charter-boat captains and river guides provide complete fishing packages for all ages. If big events are your thing, Oswego’s annual Harborfest festival attracts thousands to see national, regional, and local acts performing a wide range of music, including jazz, country, folk, big band, and rock. The Thousand Islands region has been attracting visitors in search of a relaxing vacation among its scenic islands, crystalclear water, and endless shorelines for more than 100 years. Today, it draws everyone from boaters to history buffs, diving enthusiasts, anglers, and families seeking “cottage country.” Lodging options range from waterfront resorts and conference centers with riverside dining to cottage colonies, mom-and-pop motor lodges, and campgrounds. Lighthouses, waterfront golf courses, and countless marinas round out the reasons visitors return year after year. Waterfront communities like the kitschy Alexandria Bay — with its souvenir shops, family dining, drive-in movie theater, and free events like Pirates Days — attract visitors trying to escape traffic, strip malls, and fastfood joints. Another favorite along the St. Lawrence River is Clayton, recently named one of MapQuest’s 99 Summer Travel Quests. Clayton is known in particular for the Antique Boat Museum, a waterfront Opera House, a new brewery and distillery, riverside dining, and parks, as well as, a recently built resort. Those seeking outdoor recreation can enjoy the adventure of the mighty Black River, an ideal destination for kayakers and rafters from around the world. Located in the Watertown area, many local rafting companies provide an exciting opportunity to ride the rapids for an affordable family-friendly price. Just a short drive away, the village of

Mohawk Valley Utica, Rome, Verona, and Sylvan Beach are centrally located just off the New York State Thruway, providing a convenient location for conventions, meetings, and other gatherings. Event planners have a variety of locations to choose from, including The Beeches Inn & Conference Center and the Radisson-Utica Centre. Those planning large conventions and seeking gaming options will find that Turning Stone Resort Casino and Vernon Downs Casino Hotel will meet their needs. The region offers more than 2,800 rooms at AAA Four Diamond resort hotels, national chains, and independently owned properties. Whether it’s a meeting, conference, group tour, reunion, or social event you are planning, the region offers no shortage of attractions and things to do. Take in a Broadway

Greater reater Syracuse Syracuse is quickly becoming one of New York’s most sought-after destinations. It’s where you rally your passions and find your center. That’s the essence of the brand, SyraSyra cuse: “Do Your Thing.” Syracuse is a blend of entertainment, history, adventure, and culture. The city is admired for architecture that has managed to stand the test of time. Its rich historical footprint includes the Erie Canal, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and the Underground Railroad. Today, downtown Syracuse is undergoing an urban renaissance. It offers a trendy setting for traveling Broadway shows, upscale dining, local shopping, hotels, galleries, museums, condominiums, performing-arts venues, and nightlife. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy recreation and hiking trails in more than 50 state, county, and city parks; golfers tee it up on more than 40 golf courses; and animal lovers bond with the 700 animals at Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Sports fans cannot get enough of Syracuse University basketball. The iconic Carrier Dome can seat up to nearly 35,000 cheering fans for basketball and 50,000 for football. It is the only domed stadium in the Northeast and

the largest of its kind on a college campus, in the country. The local food scene ranges from farmto-table entrees from funky food trucks to award-winning, nationally promoted restaurants, including the original Dinosaur BarB-Que. In the past few years, Syracuse has become one of the major music capitals in the region; thanks in part to an influx of local blues bands, successful regional festivals like SyraSyra cuse Jazz Fest, New York State Rhythm and Blues Festival, and unique venues like the Dinosaur. Syracuse is also home to Destiny USA, New York state’s largest enclosed shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. Destiny USA is the sixth largest shopping venue in the country and houses more than 250 high-end, brand-name tenants (outlets included). With options like go-cart racing (Pole Position Raceway), climbing the world’s largest suspended indoor ropes course, and mind-blowmind-blow ing amusement, Destiny USA gives the entire family a different reason to go “shopping.” The Finger Lakes and its wineries, villas, and resorts, such as Geneva on the Lake, are just a short drive away. In summary, the Greater Syracuse area offers a wide variety of options for everyone to enjoy and discover. It’s easy to navigate and you will find that you don’t have to venture too far to find what you’re seeking. Visit Syracuse: Do your thing.

York offers natural attractions, outdoor sports and recreation, culture, big events, a central location, ease of travel, affordable and spacious accomodations, and many interesting places to see and things to do.

Rochester KIMBERLY MCKINZIE

A city rich in culture and small-town charm

W

hat’s the best part of visiting a different city? Finding the attractions you can’t find anywhere else. In Greater Rochester, visitors and residents tap into big-city arts, dining, festivals, accessible pro sports, hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and some of the most beautiful terrain in the United States. What makes this city unique is its friendly vibe. Rochester blends the magic of a larger metro area with the neighborliness of a small town. On the town For a night out in the city, Rochester’s entertainment districts have bars and restaurants for a variety of tastes. Right downtown, the former factories in the St. Paul Quarter house Water Street Music Hall, bars and restaurants—one of which offers after-dinner salsa dancing. Music and theater dominate the East End, home to Eastman School of Music, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, the historic Little Theatre movie house and jazz clubs. Cafes, coffeehouses and some of Rochester’s most popular restaurants are located here. On East Avenue and Alexander

By Sally Parker Street, near where they intersect on the edge of downtown, find late-night clubs, British pubs and a variety of nice restaurants. Corn Hill, Rochester’s oldest neighborhood, has restaurants and a wine bar along the river. The Neighborhood of the Arts is home to Village Gate, a former factory complex that houses restaurants and shops as well as nearby bars, eateries and many art studios. Monroe Avenue has a number of small international restaurants, sports bars and unique shops. Park Avenue is an active neighborhood of beautifully restored homes. You’ll find al fresco dining, coffeehouses, boutiques and prime people-watching here. The South Wedge is another city enclave with small restaurants, lively bars and a few gourmet specialty shops. Good restaurants are everywhere in Rochester. There’s no shortage of cuisine that spans the globe—Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Chinese, Ethiopian, French, German, Japanese, sushi, steak and seafood, vegetarian and fusion-everything. Try something new while you’re here. World-class arts Our top music school and philharmonic orchestra are at the center

of Rochester’s cultural offerings. Visitors often remark on the level of sophistication evident in our music, which ranges from operas staged at Eastman Theatre to jazz trios in cozy clubs. There is music every night of the week in venues all over town. The Eastman School and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra anchor the East End, where the annual Rochester International Jazz Festival fills clubs and streets with 200,000 music lovers over nine days in June. Buddy Guy, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and Michael McDonald were among the headliners. Rochester has many musicians who perform solo and in ensembles in venues that run the gamut from cafes to museums. For live theater, Geva Theatre Center is the highest-attended regional theater in New York. Other local theaters include Blackfriars Theatre, Rochester Lyric Opera, Downstairs Cabaret Theatre and CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center. Traveling Broadway shows are staged regularly at the Auditorium Theatre. Rochester’s own Garth Fagan Dance, an award-winning modern dance company, sells out shows around the globe. The company is based downtown. Rochester City

Ballet has a distinguished presence in the region and brings talented choreographers and performers to Rochester. Push Physical Theatre’s cutting-edge blend of dance and theater draws raves, and FuturPointe Dance is winning fans with its contemporary fusion dance. Dance festivals at Nazareth College and the University of Rochester celebrate their programs and bring performers to the area. The visual arts thrive in Rochester. Painting, sculpture, metalworking and woodworking programs at area colleges and universities, particularly RIT, have produced alumni who make their mark. The Memorial Art Gallery’s new public art park with works by Albert Paley, Wendell Castle, Tom Otterness and other well-known artists sits at the intersection of University Avenue and Goodman Street. Affiliated with the University of Rochester, MAG has one of the most comprehensive collections in the country. The massive collection at ArtisanWorks also is a visual treat. The unusual museum has transformed 60,000 square feet of former warehouse space with 15,000 original works. First Friday open houses, held at city galleries

Meet, Stay & Play 2015 | Upstate New York’s Executive Travel Guide on the first Friday of every month, make it easy to catch art exhibits at dozens of venues. Studios in the Anderson Building are open on second Saturdays of the month. Photography and film are popular art forms in Rochester, thanks to Kodak and RIT. You’ll discover rotating exhibitions in the city and suburbs, including at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Work by the many talented photographers who live here is exhibited at small galleries too. We celebrate film with a half-dozen well-attended festivals, including High Falls Film Festival, Rochester Jewish Film Festival and ImageOut, the lesbian and gay film and video festival. Get some fresh air Make sure your visit includes time to enjoy the outdoors. Greater Rochester has more than 260 miles of multiuse trails and at least 70 neighborhood trails. The Genesee Riverway Trail runs from the Erie Canal through downtown all the way to Lake Ontario along the Genesee River. See three waterfalls, the river gorge and 11 parks on the way. Go for a run along the Erie Canal, or take a self-guided tour of Rochester’s historic downtown. Favorite sights are the Powers Building, the world headquarters of Eastman Kodak Co., Xerox Tower, the Central Library and the Broad Street Aqueduct. Beneath Broad Street, it once carried the Erie Canal across the river. Bicycle routes—and, on a growing number of roads, bike lanes—are marked clearly, and transit buses are

equipped with racks. Hit the slopes at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort in the Finger Lakes, or try some cross-country or snowshoe on trails in area parks. Downtown has a beautiful rink in Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park. Skates are available to rent. Three Rochester parks were designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted: Seneca Park, Genesee Valley Park and Highland Park. One of the best city neighborhoods for a stroll is the residential area around East Avenue. If you have time, take a drive to the Finger Lakes and visit the 100 wineries in this fast-growing wine region. This year, Wine Enthusiast named the Finger Lakes one of the world’s top 10 wine destinations. When the weather turns warm in May, Rochester launches into one of the busiest festival seasons around.

(We rank high for the number of festivals per capita.) Some of the most popular are the Lilac Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Corn Hill Arts Festival, Park Ave Summer Art Fest, Clothesline Festival, Greentopia Festival and Rochester Fringe. A little history Susan B. Anthony, women’s rights pioneer and a force to be reckoned with, lived at 17 Madison St. with her sister. Today the house is a museum filled with photos and mementos of her life. Tours take visitors through all the rooms, including the parlor where Anthony was arrested for voting in 1872. Frederick Douglass and his family lived in Rochester for many years. He published the North Star and traveled the world to speak out against slavery. His grave, along with that of Anthony and many other Rochester notables, is in Mount Hope Cemetery. Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of the three largest living-history museums in the country, with 70 restored 19th-century buildings and costumed interpreters. The Strong museum ranks among the top 10 children’s museums in the country. Rochester Museum & Science Center has a planetarium and three floors of interactive exhibits on science and technology, nature and the region’s cultural heritage. Rochester’s prominent role in the history of film takes center stage at George Eastman House. It also holds the personal film collections of Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Kathryn Bigelow and others. It’s also the 50-room

mansion of Kodak’s founder. Truly ingenious Eastman, John Jacob Bausch, Henry Lomb, Hiram Sibley and others made a name for Rochester. As industries grew up around the businesses they built, manufacturing ruled the local economy for generations. The sector still employs thousands. But a new energy of innovation and creativity is shifting our city’s course: Companies are emerging in biotechnology, imaging and optics, and energy research, all new strengths born from established capabilities in higher education, health care and manufacturing. Education has become a prime economic driver. The University of Rochester is the area’s largest employer, and RIT is growing rapidly to meet industry demand, along with a dozen other local colleges. More than 80,000 students attend colleges in the area. Rochester has long had thousands of small, fast-moving businesses. Many have grown into far-reaching firms: Paychex Inc.; Constellation Brands Inc., the largest wine company in the world; and Wegmans Food Markets Inc., which takes a gourmet approach to groceries and consistently ranks among Fortune’s top places to work. In fact, Rochester companies have ranked No. 1 in the magazine’s small-, medium- and large-firm categories. The region is a national patents powerhouse with at least 1,000 granted each year to area inventors. Strong roots in innovation are fueling Rochester’s new energy.
