WHY are OUTPOURINGS and REVIVALS considered to be SPECIAL and RARE? By John Burton
hy does it take an outpouring to reintroduce the church to the power of God? Why are movements like Lakeland, Brownsville and Toronto special and rare? Why is it so difficult, in most cities in America, to find a church on fire? When the Holy Spirit is operating in freedom in our churches, there will be little need for a jolt from Heaven to get us normalized. But, until then, we must cry out for a lightning strike of revival in our cities. We need to apply the paddles to the heart of the church and shock it back to life. God moved in remarkable power last night at The International House of Prayer East Detroit last night. Here’s one testimony: “John, I’ve NEVER experienced what happened to me last night. It’s explainable but incomprehendable…If it hadn’t happened to me I couldn’t understand it in it’s fullness!!! That white hot fire…When you said..I’m not talking about your weaknesses…I’m talking about ANNOINTING…that FIRE hit my chest like only something I’ve seen in a movie..like a comet hitting earth is the only way to describe it..that’s how it felt and lasted for what seemed like forever…burn in me God!! Now I know what you were talking about when your shoulder was on fire in that cave!!!” The prevailing theme that’s being communicated this week during this conference is that encounters like this one are actually to be very normal, quite average in the church! We are in the midst of a national crisis- a national church that has a form of godliness but denies the power. It’s a Sadducee spirit that radically minimizes or discounts all together the supernatural, resurrection power of Jesus. It’s common to hear about the resurrection reality in our pulpits, but rarely see resurrection power. Bring on the paddles.

’m sitting on the couch in one of my favorite places on the planet- Revolution House of Prayer. I’m looking out at the mountains and listening to worship music, and feeling both refreshed and provoked.
I was alarmed significantly as I was on the airplane flying into Colorado Springs– God burned a message into my spirit. This strong yet freeing word has resulted in some important repentance and a fresh pursuit of holiness in the body. I feel it’s important to sound the alarm for a new level of sensitivity to humility in our own lives and in the church in general. As we live truly humble and meek lives, the Earth will be turned upside down. The Kingdom will advance. After being asked to share this word at a leadership event in Colorado Springs back, we felt that it was imperative to unpack it further. I did so at a new city-strategy for leadership development in the Colorado Springs area. The repentance in the room led to joy and a fresh fire that can only come as we are surrendered and broken in the presence of God. It was quite a day. Something is stirring in Colorado Springs. I cast some vision for a possible revival/prophecy/prayer driven church in Colorado Springs that Saturday evening at Revolution House of Prayer, and the excitement and energy in the room was surprisingly intense. Something is up. The phrase “Almost Homosexual” can be quite offensive if we aren’t hungering for righteousness. If we allow ourselves to miss the point of the message, it’s quite possible to become quite defensive and offended. However, for those who trust God’s wisdom and his zeal for holiness, we’ll allow the sword to pierce us- and change us. Keep in mind, the primary driver of the homosexual movement is not same-sex attraction. At its foundation it’s not about sex or perversion, and at its foundation, this word to the body, to the church, isn’t about sex or perversion. It’s not about liberal theology or conservative theology. It’s has nothing to do with a particular church’s stance for or against homosexual marriage or gay clergy. It has everything to do with pride, identity and lust. So, this word doesn’t mean that people in the church are almost embracing same-sex attraction. I hope I’m making that clear. However, it does beg the question, “Are there people in the body who are driven by pride? By narcissism? By lust for power, position or other goals? Is it a pandemic or is there nothing to be concerned about?”

✚✚ Pride “Separation and elevation”
We know scripturally that God actually moves away from, intentionally resists those who are prideful. Our pride is usually driven by our strengths and successes. We embrace a division in the body with the attitude that I’m different, I’m another breed, I’m separate because I’m on a different level. It’s the “I’m right, you’re wrong” attitude that creates intentional division, and it’s more harmful than we realize.
✚✚ Identity “Separation and justification”
This pursuit of establishing our identity is usually driven by our rejection. We declare that I’m different and I like it. We see people going to great lengths to be recognized and affirmed after years of rejection. The attempt is to justify our identity even at the cost of unity. It’s narcissism.
✚✚ Lust “Separation and domination”
The idea here is that I know what I want and nobody will stand in my way. The call to humility and holiness cannot be underestimated. We in Colorado Springs and the nation need God’s manifest presence to intensify significantly. Leonard Ravenhill said this: “You can have all of your doctrines right—yet still not have the presence of God.” It’s all about drawing near, being intimate, broken, humble, passionate! We must have God stirring in power again in Colorado Springs! If we think that we are immune to pride, the pursuit of identity and lust, we really don’t understand holiness. Jer 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind Even to give every man according to his ways,
At the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, it’s normal to be deeply in God’s presence 4 or more hours a day. People find themselves undone as the Holy Spirit searches their hearts and lovingly reveals pride, hardness, fear and other debilitating issues. We need to search our hearts and hit our knees! The core call is for a movement of humility and holiness. It’s a call to become broken and undone, desperate and deeply intimate with Jesus. It’s a call to a fasted lifestyle, to full surrender and complete saturation in the advance of the Kingdom. It’s a call to the deeply humble, yet powerfully bold life of John the Baptist. Are we ready to let the Lover of our souls invade the deepest parts of our inner man? Is 6:5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” When God is in our midst, a revelation of our own sin and issues are made known. A key problem today is that God’s manifest presence isn’t with us as He should be! Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. He is the Revelation. He is the Word. Where God is, revelation is. You can’t separate the two. We must embrace the prophetic spotlight into our heart! We must deal with our own hearts if this ministry is to advance and if this city is to be set free. We cannot anymore develop systems that enhance our own identities, stroke our pride or fuel our lust for power, recognition or anything else. It’s time again to declare the cross, holiness, humility and passion from our pulpits and on our faces! “If Jesus had preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.” — Leonard Ravenhill “All of the acceptable sins in church are keeping us sick.”-Steve Gray “Be careful about what you think is innocent. It may come back and choke you.”- Steve Gray “I doubt that more than two percent of professing Christians in the United States are truly born again.”- Leonard Ravenhill So what’s the solution? Repentance and prayer. We must see night and day prayer return to Colorado Springs! “A sinning man stops praying, a praying man stops sinning” — Leonard Ravenhill The more we pray, the more we repent… night and day. Let’s agree for a movement of intimacy, humility, repentance, prayer and power in the church!

he Word of God is living and true, able to penetrate deep within spirits that are open to receive. Listen prayerfully to John 19, verses 31-37: “Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may come to believe. For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled: ‘Not a bone of him will be broken.’ And again another passage says: ‘They will look upon him whom they have pierced.’” There is a medical explanation for the blood and water flowing from the heart of Jesus after the soldier pierced it with a spear, but that would be missing the whole point of this terribly significant passage for the Church today. John was the mystical theologian among the Gospel writers, and he very frequently found deeply spiritual meanings in historical events. So, Church, go with me in the Spirit to the foot of the Cross, right below Jesus, and let that Blood and Water flow down upon us. It is only by the Blood and the Water that the Church can come alive, one Christian at a time. All preaching, all witnessing, all Bible reading, all church-going is empty and meaningless unless we as Christians yearn daily to be washed in the Blood of the Lamb and in the Water that is the living grace of the Holy Spirit. It is not enough – and it is a lie of Satan – to be washed in the Blood and in the waters of Baptism at the time of our personal justification. To be sure, Baptism is only received once, but the life-giving and cleansing grace of the Holy Spirit must be a daily sought after reality. And Jesus, now the Great High Priest, with that wound still visible in His Glorified Body and with that divinely beating Heart, full of love for all mankind, seeks every day to renew and cleanse us again with His Blood. In my judgment, the great sin of the Christian Church in our day is complacency. Far too many Christians are ho-hum about their faith, sitting in their pews, trying not to rock the boat; and far too many pastors sadly encourage this way of life. The flowing of the Blood and Water from the side of Jesus also represent spiritually that He gave all He had, every drop of blood, in His passion to redeem us and to bring salvation to souls.
Just as He wept over Jerusalem shortly before He died, so today He weeps over the Church as He sees the big “C” of complacency. Revival means coming to life again, and that is what the Church needs – a wakening from sleep, even from a state of the living dead. A prophet in the Old Testament, by definition, was a person called to remind people of the Covenant with God and to tell them the consequences of not following God’s will. Prophets were never popular, because they upset the status quo. Prophets in the New Covenant are no more popular; they make us squirm, they tell us that we focus more on serving ourselves than on serving God. If the Christian Church were to truly wake up, there would be a tremendous revival in our nation and in our world. That requires the same revolutionary spirit that Jesus had; that requires stopping emphasis on social game-playing in churches and focusing on the building of a true evangelistic spirit. It is time to stop playing church! And this must begin with each of us; it is so easy to point fingers at others, but we as Christians are cells in the Body of Christ. And if our cell is weak or sick, it impacts the entire Body. Every Christian is called to fervent prayer, to being a role model to those around us, to accepting the prophetic role of reminding the Church of its true mission. Will we accept that call, or will we remain complacent? When we are lukewarm, when we are not on fire as Jesus was on fire for the salvation of the world, then Satan chuckles. The call for personal renewal is right now, this very moment! Bob Burton is a committed Christian whose ministry focuses 1) on renewal within the Body of Christ (for Christians to stop playing church) and 2) on proclaiming to all people everywhere that Jesus Christ is the only true hope for mankind, present and future. This painting is a modern interpretation of Ezekiel’s dry bones. A friend of mine asked me to paint him an interpretation of these verses. He was a small group leader and had a caring, gentle leadership style. Most paintings of this story show Ezekiel out in the open proclaiming to the field of dry bones in an impersonal way. I wanted to show that sometimes God will heal the dry bones as we care individually and personally for those God brings into our lives. It might not be all stage and glamour. “6th” is a reference to Sixth Street in Austin, TX. The skeletons walk the streets. The “Open” bar sign also speaks of the harvest being ripe and hearts being open for the Word, prophetic evangelism. There is a tiny warfare scene in the clouds. Enrique S. This image is one He recently gave me during my private time with Him. I saw Him painting my hands and I asked Him, what are you doing? “I am painting your hands with my love and grace for my purposes--in you.” I asked if I could look at them and see the colors and he said, “it doesn’t matter, I have painted them with my Glory—“ As He was painting them, they got very warm and stayed that way the whole day. R. Christine Council- For the last 17 years or so, I was a part time professional pastel portrait artist and art instructor. One time I was worshipping at a MOW conference, and asking God to open my eyes so I could see in the Spirit. God’s Spirit came on me, although no one touched me…it felt like a huge ball rushing from heaven, and it pushed me back about 10 ft. and onto the floor. While I was there, I was overcome by the spirit, and I saw a horse. It was not a horse from here, the mane was moving like it was under water and the horse was blue, white and purple. The Lord said to me, “Now, paint it.” I had always painted from photos, or looked at something…never just from my mind’s eye. So I began to argue with the Lord, but He said, “I will help you.” So I got up and started painting with some oil pastels the church provided. As I did, if I got stuck, He would lay me down again by the spirit, and bring the horse close to me, and let me study it. When I finished, I heard Him say to me, “Delight yourself in me, and I will give you the desires of your heart.”

urled up on my couch, worship music playing quietly in the background, I drifted into a place of deep rest. The Holy Spirit enveloped me, drawing me into a heavenly realm and showed me things that brought great encouragment for my family after many years of pushing forward in diligent faith. God has given us much to look forward to. In the midst of receiving encouraging revelation about God’s desires for us, circumstances vied for my attention. I became distracted and discouraged. Things became grey and misty in my mind. I had my feet stuck on planet earth and forgot I wasn’t a resident here. I found myself asking, “Why am I despairing?” Now, as I tried to rest, I struggled. I was still mulling over everything and asking why and how instead of truly resting in Him. I was not submitting my thoughts to Him as I needed to. Seeing me in my state of weakness, the enemy saw his opportunity and employed oppression to hang over me like a heavy blanket. During a worship service, the Holy Spirit surrounded me and drew me close. I could reach up and touch the face of Jesus as I felt His hand on my face. Even though I was still caught in the turmoil of my mind, allowing the enemy to romp around in my thoughts, Jesus was loving on me, drawing me to Himself. The next morning, as I tried to rest in Him, I heard Him gently and sincerely asking, “What is more important to you, Beloved? Which do you desire more, a solution or Me?” Oh my Jesus, how could anything be more desirable than You!? You are the solu-
tion to any struggle that I face! Upon my return, I sensed His laughter and His joy over me. I repented and renounced my desire to see things made right. I let go of fear and once again clung completely to my King. It took discipline as I had to train my mind to stop thinking about stuff that was bugging me and just enjoy being with my Jesus. It wasn’t over yet. There was still that stubborn oppression that wanted to weigh even heavier and drive me back into discouragement. It wasn’t easy but I had to stand against it. The battle raged a little more as intimidation and thoughts of doubt were thrown into the mix. “You can’t overcome this. It’s too hard. It will never go away.” I got my husbands ipod, put on the praise and worship music and pressed forward. The heaviness broke. Just as I once heard Graham Cooke say, you go into your refuge and come out of your fortress.
Now the Lord had my full attention again. Allowing God to transform our minds to a Kingdom mindset takes consistent practice and application. With this experience I realized my focus shifted more to the things I DO for Jesus because I love Him and His people so much instead of remaining firmly focused on who He is and who I am in Him. This slight shift opened a door for me to be overwhelmed by circumstances. I picture myself holding a n d look-
His hand ing all
around pointing and saying, “Jesus, what about this and what about that! Oh, look there! What are we going to do about that?” Finally, He touches my chin and gently draws my face to look at Him. His smiling eyes, filled with love, laughter and infinite knowing, look into mine. “Trust me. I’ve got you covered.” Every moment we must remember who we are to Him and in Him. We must truly keep our eyes fixed on Him. It doesn’t matter what is going on. He knows, He will handle it. When our eyes are on Him, and His peace is in our hearts, He will show us how to pray. He will flow through us and we will find ourselves doing things we never thought possible. When we remember who we are to our God and where we stand with Him, then we will not be shaken. Our feet will stay in the Kingdom Dweller’s realm and we will walk in love, obedience, confidence in our God and in the power of His wonderful Holy Spirit. The more intimate our relationship with Him, the deeper we go into the kingdom mindset; the further we meander into the heavenly realm, the more we become true Kingdom
Dwellers. The heavenly realm is eternal and immeasurable. Yet greater still is our loving Creator, our Daddy God, Our Savior and Friend, our Comforter and Counselor. Let’s get lost in Him and find heaven on earth...and then share it with others. Colossians 3:1-4 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. (Let’s consider the truth that we DIED and our life is hidden with Christ in God. Christ is our life. So He will take care of all those things in our life that we let ourselves be concerned with. He is our life – He is a good steward. He takes care of things. He will take care of every aspect of our life. Do we trust Him?) Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
The contention of this book is simple - THE EXTREME MANIFEST PRESENCE OF GOD IS THE BIBLICAL NORM for a New Testament believer. We label it many ways - revival, an outpouring, renewal - and certainly different moves of God have distinct flavors to them. However, regardless of the descriptive term we attach to it, we simply are not experiencing it. Just as we don’t attempt to start driving a car in fifth gear, we should understand that the pursuit of revival must begin at the appropriate place. As we move through the gears, we will find ourselves picking up speed and momentum toward the goal of a city-wide outpouring of the Holy Spirit! I just finished reading 20 Elements of Revival. Everyone should read this book! I wish I had the cash for a case of this book. Seriously! I keep thinking of more people who NEED a copy of it! It’s very, very, very rare for me to feel this way about a book other than the Bible.-Kathi Sharpe

WALKING IN DIVINE HEALTH
t seems that nearly every born again, spirit-filled believer living on the earth these days is declaring, “…your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matt. 6:10) That’s great, and I say “Amen”, but as the Michigan State Director for the International Association of Healing Rooms; I see one big obstacle to reaching this mission, and that is sickness. Most of the people that I see come into the Healing Rooms for prayer to be healed of various diseases are born again, spirit-filled believers in Jesus Christ. If so many in the Body of Christ are sick, how are we going to rise up, take dominion, conquer the “seven mountains” and establish God’s kingdom here on earth? John G. Lake, the great healing evangelist that lived from 1870 to 1935 said this: “Do you know (that you know that you know) in your soul that you are qualified to GOVERN?” Isaiah 9:6 says, “…and the government shall be upon HIS shoulder…” Jesus said: I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (Luke 10:19) – God has given us the ability to enforce His government – not only in the sense of ruling cities and nations – but in the sense of ruling and having rulership and dominion over our own physical bodies – we have the privilege and more than that we have the responsibility and the RIGHT to enforce the government of heaven to rule and reign in our physical bodies! Jesus never called in sick to his Father saying, “Sorry Dad, but I need to take a sick day today; I’m just not feeling good!” Since Christ is our model of how we can expect to live our lives here on earth, and since he “forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases” (Ps. 103:3), why do we get well just to get sick again? John 20:31 says, “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. In this verse, the word “life” is the Greek word “zoe”. In Strong’s concordance it says that zoe is “the state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animate.” When we possess the very life of Christ in us, we have vitality; we are strong and vigorous and full of health.
More than that, the moment we receive Christ as our Savior and Lord, or in Christian jargon, get “saved”, we possess divine health. Look at what it says in John 17:3, ”For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” The word “save” in this passage is the word “sozo” which means not only to save us from the penalty of death for our sin; but also to “make well, heal, restore to health” (Strong’s G4982). Consider that in John 17:2 &3 Jesus, in speaking to the Father says, “For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. This is stunning! Jesus is declaring that he has been given authority by the Father to give us eternal life; and what is eternal life? According to Strong’s “eternal” means, “without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be, without beginning, without end, never to cease, everlasting.” Now remembering that “life” means vitality or animate, you can see that eternal life is not something that will begin in the future, after our bodies die, but it begins the moment we receive salvation. We are able to live in divine health right now! Let’s look at just one more example. Romans 8:11 says, “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” According to Strong’s; in this passage the word “quicken”, zōopoieō, means to produce alive, to cause to live, make alive, give life, by spiritual power to arouse or invigorate. You see, there is a difference between Divine Healing and Divine Health! We have had much teaching over the last 100 years on healing; but part of the message of the Gospel of the KINGDOM that God is releasing today is to teach us that we can take hold of the Truth that we do not have to be sick! Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding, California says this: “Healing is huge; but HEALTH is better!” One time the Holy Spirit said to Cal Pierce, the Director for the International Association
of Healing Rooms in Spokane, Washington: “Did you know that healing was not supposed to be for my Body? My Body was not supposed to be sick. Holy Spirit said if you just continue to teach on healing it will keep you where you are, but if you begin to impart divine health, it will take you out into the realm of miracles. Healing is the process to establish divine health.” You see, sickness is in the outer court, healing is in the inner court; but DIVINE HEALTH is in the Holy of Holies! God has a NEW PROVISION for us in 5769/2009 – DIVINE HEALTH!! Remember that in this year, Samekh Tet, 5769; we are breaking out of old cycles. Samekh is a picture of a circle or cycle! This is the year to break out of the cycle of getting sick, then well, then sick; then well… God wants us to get well – healed – and stay healed! It’s time to break out of that OLD CYCLE! Divine health is God’s will for us! His Word tells us that in 3 John 1:2 , “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” To do that; we must receive the TRUTH of His Word and His will. Third John goes on to say in verse 3 & 4, “It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth. 4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” But we must have an EXPECTATION for Divine Health! Cal Pierce says, “If we don’t know something is available; how can we receive it? Many in the CHURCH not only do not have an expectation for healing; but they have never even considered that just maybe Jesus’ death on the cross purchased something beyond healing called theburning 21
DIVINE HEALTH! If we don’t even have the expectation for healing in the body of Christ; how will we ever move into the provision of heaven for Divine Health?” If we have the LIFE OF CHRIST living inside of us…why should we be sick? Bill Johnson says it this way: “How can the Spirit of the resurrected Christ dwell in us and our bodies not be affected?” Have you ever really thought about that? We have the very Spirit…the Holy Spirit…the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead living inside of us! Wow!! Romans 8:9 says, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” So if the Life of Christ dwells in us; and Christ has ALREADY conquered sin, death and the grave; why should we still be under the curse of the law? We don’t get “saved” over and over and over do we? Of course not! Since “sozo” means both salvation and healing; then we should not get healed to get sick to get healed to get sick – over and over and over! SO IF DIVINE HEALTH IS HEAVEN’S PROVISION FOR US HERE ON EARTH; HOW DO WE RECEIVE IT? Would you like to know how to move from the cycle of getting sick to get healed to get sick to get healed to Divine Health? I want to share with you some revelation on this from two men I have already mentioned…John G. Lake and Bill Johnson. John G. Lake was such a forerunner. The revelation he walked in was lost for about 80 years and is only now being rediscovered and put into practice. There is a very large book of John G. Lake’s teachings that I own. In one chapter, called “The Second Crowning”, John G. Lake says this: “In a divine healing meeting some months ago, as I was teaching, I tried to develop the thought that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. (Pro. 23:7). And I was endeavoring August 2009
to show the people that the spirit of victory in Christ Jesus in one’s heart not only affected the attitude of one’s mind, but likewise, his soul. In fact through the nervous system, man’s mental attitudes are transmitted clear through his body. The attitude of our soul has much to do with not only our mental states and our spiritual life, but likewise our physical health. Indeed, it seems to me that as the spirit of man is tuned with God, all the outgrowth of his life will be in harmony with his spirit. The attitude of his mind will be in accordance, and the condition of his body will be a revelation of the attitude of his mind. That is the reason I have always endeavored in my preaching to bring before the mind of man the consciousness of triumph, the consciousness of victory, the power of mastery. When the Lord Jesus Christ is born indeed in the soul of man, when by the grace and power of the Son of God, you and I yield ourselves to God until our nature becomes the possessor of that Spirit that is in Christ, then, bless God, we begin to realize the spirit of mastery that Jesus possessed when he said: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Rev. 1:8 Bill Johnson said the same thing this way: “The Spirit and the body – what separates the two concerning the effect of the Spirit on the body has to do entirely with the soul. There’s a bridge. And although the Holy Spirit is wanting to release life into the body; when the soul is in opposition to the nature of the Spirit; then what happens? The body takes on the nature of the soul. So then, sickness is to my body, what sin is to my soul.”
Walking in divine health then, is an extension of healing. The way you get to healing is the same path that leads to living a life of divine health! Eugene Peterson says it this way: “It’s a long obedience in the same direction.” In Malachi 4:2 the Word of God says; “the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.” So we see that there is a direct connection between living a life of righteousness and being in good health. How do we live a life of righteousness? Romans 12:2 tells us how, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” In other words; His perfect will for us is divine health! John G. Lake had a mind that was transformed by the Word of God. He REALLY BELIEVED that the power of sin and death was conquered by Christ on the cross. He had so yielded his life and his body to be completely possessed by Jesus; that he had no fear even in the face of the Bubonic Plague that swept through Africa early in the Twentieth Century. For five years in South Africa, John G. Lake displayed the greatest spiritual power seen since the days of Jesus — not only for others but also for himself. While assisting doctors during a bubonic plague outbreak, he was asked why he had not contracted the disease since he had used none of their medical protection. He said, “it is the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” To demonstrate, he had them take live bubonic plague germs still foaming from the lungs of a newly dead person and put them in his hands and then examine the germs under a microscope. They were dead! Beloved, it is time for the Church of Jesus Christ to rise up and walk in the demonstration of Matthew 6:10 “on earth as it is in heaven”. It is time for us to move beyond healing and walk in Divine Health!
Once again, “…as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. (Pro. 23:7) So our MIND (how we think), & our EMOTIONS (how we feel) must come into alignment with the Word of God to receive healing and ongoing health!
THE NEW BREED:
his is really part 2 of the previous special bulletin that I sent out. We are quickly closing in on the end of the age. As of 2009, nearly every ethnic group has a witness that Jesus is Savior. I looked at the macro view in the last bulletin. We now need to turn our attention to who God is raising up as “dread champions” to shift human history and welcome back Jesus the King. In 1982, God promised Mike Bickle that He would change the understanding and expression of Christianity within one generation. Bob Jones in an August 4th 2008 bulletin saw a whole apostolic company operating in signs and wonders. Paul Cain has called them “Joel’s Army” (referring to a people who live a Joel 2 lifestyle, not the negative armies in Joel 1 and 2 that destroy things). Mark Anderson called this group “The New Breed”. Who is this new breed of those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes? Around here at IHOP-KC, they go by many names: “Friends of the Bridegroom”, “The Nazarites”, “The Sons of Thunder”, “The faithful ones”, “The over-comers”, “Vessels of Honor”, and many other names. There are seven characteristics (at the heart level) I want to highlight related to these men and women who will love Jesus unto death: Characteristic #1. They know God intimately (through the Word) Jesus said in John 17:3, “Now this is eternal life, that they may know you, the one true God and Jesus Christ whom you sent.” Paul cried out in Philippians 3:10-11 “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering, becoming like him in his death and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. This is far more than repenting from sin and turning to Jesus and his righteousness (though this is essential to getting started). I am so thankful that God has led me through that, but there is so much more. When I talk about really knowing God, do I know the why behind Jesus shedding his blood on the cross to remove my sin? Do I really know what brings pleasure to the heart of Jesus according to truth (not how I feel today)? Do I know what causes Jesus heart grief and pain? (Hint: It is not when we as sincere followers of Jesus stumble in our brokenness, and then repent and go for it full-force again). Do I know in detail what is in the heart of Jesus regarding the nation of Israel? Do I fully understand how His heart reacts when one of his little ones is exploited for sexual gratification? Do I understand the wisdom of his leadership in leading us through “dark, painful seasons”? The apostle John was Jesus’ best friend on the earth. It was John who was able to get the answer on who would betray Him because he leaned into knowing His heart. It was at the cross, Jesus trusted John with his most prized relationships- his family (see John 11:26-27). It is this deep intimate communion and trust with Jesus that is foundational to this new breed of champions. Characteristic #2. Identity: They know who they are to God If you have been following my ministry at IHOP-KC; you know that God spoke to me 2006 about what he wanted me to do in Korea and that I would know if I succeeded by watching the plates in the Pacific. The prophecy also implied a shaking was coming if I didn’t walk in humility. God granted me success in 2007 and then the trouble in 2008 to confirming the accuracy of the prophetic word. However, the whole prophecy was primarily to confirm the last line. He said, “Who you are to Me is much more important than anything you can do for Me.” Jesus as a human being personified what this mysterious phrase means. Satan tempted Jesus repeatedly to doubt his identity- “If you are the Son of God…” “If you are the Son of God…” “If you are the Son of God…” It was out of Jesus knowing who He was as a human being in John 13:1-3 to the Father
Let he who has ears to hear…let him hear!
Revival is Better Than...
of Glory that flowed out the ultimate act of humility found in John 13:4-19:36. When the reality of God’s wisdom and tenderness in leadership and His eternal workmanship is made manifest, the redeemed cry out, “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are all your ways King of the Ages” (Revelation 15:3). Some of the greatest rewards that Jesus promises over-comers are related to knowing His name and God giving them a new name- speaking of their identity before God as “highly esteemed” for the way they lived on the earth (Revelation 2:17; 3:5 and 3:12). Understanding and rejoicing over our eternal identity before our Father, Bridegroom, King and Righteous Judge is the foundation to walking out extraordinary humility on the earth. Characteristic #3: Unstoppable love of God expressed through radical sanctification The 3rd characteristic of this “New Breed” will be radical sanctification based on intimacy before God and also having their identity in God. Matthew 5-7 will describe the lifestyle of this company of people as they individually and corporately express their love for Jesus tangibly in words and deeds. This goes far beyond just “staying out of trouble” and avoiding the “big sins” such
as blatant idol worship, casting spells involving demonic beings, murdering someone, participating in human trafficking (the sex slave trade), and greed that results in massive oppression of others. Instead of asking “how much sin can I get away with”, this new breed is asking, “how radically can I give myself to expressing whole-hearted love for Jesus (overflowing to other people)”. For example, for many of us “The Fear of the LORD” involves being afraid of coming under the judgment of God (bad things happening to us because God’s judgment lands on us). However, this “New Breed” will take “The Fear of the LORD” to a whole new level. Out of deeply abiding in communion with God; they will “fear” doing something that grieves the heart of Jesus- even if there are no immediate negative consequences. The result will be a radiant, joy-filled holiness that will inspire those around them. Their acts reflect the kindness and joy of Jesus Himself. Their speech brings forth life and healing in the midst of a world of darkness and pain. God’s commands are not burdensome because they are simply a means to the end of expressing the unstoppable,
unquenchable love of God that is flowing through their beings. Characteristic #4: Persevering Love: Tested and found true It is easy to be desire to walk out radical righteousness in an easy season of life when all is going well with Jesus and other people. It is a much more difficult thing to walk out radical righteousness because of vibrant love for Jesus over years and then decades. Inevitably, there are a few “big storms” in life along with many little seasons of temptation and trouble. A love relationship by “default” will grow cold unless it is intentionally sustained. Song of Songs 5:1-8:4 talk about the seasons of mature testing the Bride goes through. Song of Songs 5:1-10-6:9 describes a season of trouble, persecution and pain. In the midst of the season of pain and trial, these people will stand firm in radical trust even when life does not make sense. They will answer Song of Songs 5:1-9 pain and trouble with Song of Songs 5:10-16 radical expressions of devotion (though it will look still look pathetic in the natural). Meanwhile, Song of Songs 6:10-8:4 describes a season of great honor and seductive temptation. Many people who can endure trouble faithfully with Jesus end up getting
usually the one that persecutes the next move of the Holy Spirit. A group of people walking out the first five characteristics over time will likely get a corporate visitation from God. However, it is only this “Friends of the Bridegroom reality” that will turn a corporate visitation of God into a place of habitation.
swept away by the praises of people. As the result, “the fear of man” creeps in resulting in subtle deception, (especially when there are no negative or even positive “outcomes”) and a dulling faith. In both plenty or in famine, the hearts of this new breed will not be moved from radical, unquenchable love for Jesus. Characteristic #5: Decisive action based on biblical faith In one word, this characteristic means radical obedience that requires faith. Out of the place of deep intimacy and Communion with God, He will speak! The Scriptures give us much general wisdom and knowledge that we absolutely need to know. However scripture also tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith without works is dead. This New Breed will take decisive actions and go “all in” (to use Texas Hold’m terminology) in response to a clear invitation by Jesus to do something that will deeply bring pleasure to His heart. The only thing that will matter to them is whether God was honored or not. The few times I have been invited into decisive action through a supernatural encounter with Jesus, I have never regretted it. The first time I did this (a day after coming to know Jesus) regarding the unknown (at that time to me) “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”, God responded to my weak act of love and proceeded to “baptize” the entire Bible camp in revival and joy. In every case that God has “called me out” into taking clear, “faith-filled” action and by God’s mercy and grace I somehow did it, God has met me and done astounding wonders. All of this has flowed out of a sustained deep intimacy and communion with Jesus. August 2009
(My main problem in 2008 was that I proverbially put “the cart before the horse” expecting the cart to move.) Characteristic #6- Extraordinary humility before others as Friends of the Bridegroom Around IHOP-KC we talk about John the Baptist a lot in preparing the way of the Lord (see #7 below). John the Baptist was anointed from birth and sought God with intense prayer and fasting accompanied by radical holiness. In response to prayer, (God hears our prayers!) God anointed John the Baptist with a message that startled the nation of Israel. Multitudes came out to the middle of no where to hear this man preach about the coming Messiah. John 3:25 and Matthew 11:2 indicates that he had a core leadership team. However, this characteristic is not about his ministry platform or influence on Israel. The most radical thing John the Baptist did in John 3:22-36 was he gave up his ministry, his human source of honor, and his financial stream so that all could follow Jesus freely without hindrance. John tells us the reason why in John 3:29-30- He heard the voice of the Bridegroom and his joy was fulfilled. It was this same reality that caused the Apostles to give away their exclusive governmental and economic “powerbase” in Acts 15, freeing the Gentiles to worship in their own cultural expressions, speeding the Gospel of the Kingdom to the nations of the earth. Without our identity being rooted in Eternity (Characteristic #2) we will put our identity in something else. When we are threatened, we end up reacting in selfpreservation or in self-conceit. Sadly, history testifies that the previous move of God is
Characteristic #7- The ultimate ambition: Hastening the return of Jesus In the last supper, Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant. We talk about how bread represents the body of Jesus and the cup represents the Blood of the Covenant shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:26-28). However, in our communion services we don’t typically include Matthew 26:29, “I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom”. This is a loaded statement! Typically in scripture, wine is symbolic of joy and celebration. Every Jewish wedding had wine symbolizing joy (This is why it was so disastrous to run out of wine in Jesus’ day- see John 2:1-11). Applying what we know of wine to this statement of Jesus, we can infer that Jesus is saying that His joy will not be made full until He can be with us forever in his Father’s kingdom on the earth (Matthew 6:9-10). Other scriptures imply the fullness of Jesus’ joy comes at His 2nd coming to Jerusalem. The last characteristic of this “The New Breed” is that their ultimate goal (taskwise) is to welcome Jesus back to the earth. Scripture talks about building a highway of holiness (Isaiah 35) and preparing the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:1-3; 60:10-12). It is a physical path connecting Egypt, Israel, and Assyria ( Isaiah 19:23-25). Whether they live or die as a witness for Jesus is not a big issue. Their desire is to hasten the day of gladness in the Lord’s heart- when Jesus returns. Their motive is found in the cry of the Moravian missionaries as they sold themselves into slavery: “Give to the Lamb the Reward of His suffering.” A final note: This “New Breed” is not defined by age, but rather by their expression and desire. God jealously desires to take sincere, weak and broken people and display His wonders through them. Jess Gjerstad is an intercessory missionary at The International House of Prayer Kansas City
“The coming moves of God will require nothing short of a revolution of our current structures, models and mindsets. Not an adjustment or an enhancement, but deep reform. The resulting fire and presence of the Holy Spirit will cause us to marvel and wonder why we ever resisted at all.- John Burton
