Dear reader, Bristol is no stranger to adversity. Each member of our community faces unique challenges, so often working towards their degree while holding a job, parenting, dealing with illness, or otherwise juggling the endless list of responsibilities life throws our way. The COVID-19 pandemic added another challenge into the mix, which students and faculty alike worked hard to overcome, but as vaccines become available and life inches towards a new normal, we are all left with one burning question: what’s next?

This issue of The HAWK explores the future of our school, community, and students. We highlight the stories of graduating students, speak to faculty about decisions regarding upcoming semesters, and explore what the job market is like for students entering the market. Our student-run newspaper believes in the value of student voices, and we are excited to present this special edition of our publication.

Welcome to our Special Edition Celebrating Recent Bristol Graduates

Graduation arrived in May for many students here at Bristol.

While the honor may be a bit less surface-level exciting than the prospect of graduating from a four-year university, it still marks what seems to be the slow end of an exhausting, year-long online learning journey - and a pathway to our futures.

BRISTOL CELEBRATES 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony, Class of 2021 valedictorian, salutatorian and prestigious award recipients press release by Bristol College Communications

Bristol Community College celebrated its 54th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 5:30 p.m., on Bristol’s 2021 Commencement website, Facebook and YouTube pages. The ceremony’s unique virtual format featured new additions, including fun “watch party” packages sent to each graduate with their cap, gown and special celebratory items.

“Your college achievements do not have to be solely defined by the unprecedented challenges we have faced over the last year. You have worked hard each and every day to make this happen for yourself and your families. Your ability to get through the last year is just a testament to your tenacity, perseverance and Bayhawk grit,” said Laura L. Douglas, Ph.D., President, Bristol Community College. “Whether you are continuing your education or entering the workforce, your possibilities are endless and your future is bright.”

As one of the largest community college graduating classes in Massachusetts, Bristol Community College awarded approximately 1,159 degrees and certificates, including degrees in Associate in Science, Associate in Arts and Associate in Applied Science. Certificates of achievement were also awarded. Academic achievement with cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude designations were recognized.

Last August, hundreds of students and their families, as well as faculty, staff and guests from across the world, tuned into Bristol’s first-ever virtual commencement ceremony to celebrate and cheer on our graduates together in real-time. This year’s event featured many of the same elements of a 6

traditional in-person commencement including recognizing each dedicated graduate who earned their credential by name.

In keeping with tradition, the following prestigious awards were presented during Bristol’s 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony: CLASS OF 2021 VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN This year’s Valedictorian is Katherine Haley of Fall River, Associate in Arts in liberal arts & sciences (psychology transfer); and the Salutatorian is Lydia Bolger of Mansfield, Associate in Science in office administration (executive administrative assistant).

Katherine Haley of Fall River is a student leader focused on issues pertaining to homelessness and addiction. At Bristol, she excelled academically and served the college as the recording officer of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a student advocate on the National Community College Funding Committee, and as a Commonwealth Honors Program Scholar researching how the addiction recovery community is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. A believer in the power of education and connection to community, she designed and participates in mentorship programs for students in need of additional support at the college.

She credits Bristol’s dedicated faculty and staff for encouraging and challenging her, both academically and personally, to expand her horizons and explore opportunities that she had not considered.

Katherine has extended her critical work by volunteering in her community at the River to Recovery

substance abuse recovery program in Fall River and at Bristol’s monthly Mobile Food Market, in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Banks.

Through her work with local addiction treatment programs, Katherine is focused on assisting others through their recovery process and ending the stigma about addiction. She will continue her education at Brown University in the field of psychology with a focus on trauma.

Lydia Bolger of Mansfield, enrolled at Bristol in 2018 as an ambitious adult learner determined to achieve her life-long goal of earning a college degree. After losing her job of 10 years to her company’s closing, Lydia decided to view her situation as a positive, life-changing opportunity to begin her college education and pursue a new career.

In addition to her excellent academic record at the college, Lydia has enhanced her Bristol experience by serving as a peer tutor for the college’s office administration degree program as well as an embedded tutor for Bristol’s Early College program assisting BMC Durfee High School students through the program’s opportunity for high school students to try college while earning college credits in a supportive environment.

She will continue her education at Bristol in the field of computer information systems with a focus on computer programming and web development and plans to transfer to a four-year institution to earn her bachelor’s degree.

The college is proud to announce the following prestigious award recipients honored at Bristol Community College’s 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony: DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD The Distinguished Citizen Award is presented annually to an outstanding local citizen whose character and achievements have enriched the life of the community, or to an individual who has made distinguished contributions in the fields of health, education, business, industry, labor, government or the arts.

This year, the 2021 Distinguished Citizen Award was presented to the Fall River Fire Department Division of Emergency Medical Services (FRFD EMS Unit).

When the coronavirus impacted the South Coast region, the Fall River Fire Department’s Division

of Emergency Medical Services (FRFD EMS Unit) was tasked with keeping our communities safe, with limited personal protective equipment (PPE).

The unit rallied to collect and distribute the PPE and rapidly initiated a COVID-19 testing program to keep first responders as safe as possible. This combined effort has kept hundreds of first responders healthy and safe, enabling their dedicated service to our community without interruption.

In early August of 2020, the department’s EMS unit, under the direction of Fire Chief John D. Lynch and EMS Director Timothy Oliveira, quickly volunteered to assist Bristol Community College develop an on-campus COVID-19 testing site and administered weekly COVID-19 testing for Bristol’s hybrid students, faculty and on-campus employees who remained learning and working on-campus or in face-to-face learning environments, such as classrooms, labs and clinical settings.

This critical effort enabled Bristol to continue its mission to keep its college community, learning and working on campus, safe and make a seamless transition to a specialized COVID-19 testing service. The initiative also ensured that the college’s students in degree programs requiring face-to-face components remained academically on-track for success.

The collaboration between the college and the Fall River Fire Department has continued since Bristol’s Fall River Campus began serving as the host location for a regional COVID-19 vaccination site, provided by the Fall River Board of Health and Fall River Fire Department Emergency Medical Services. This coordinated effort has resulted in an ongoing, large-scale COVID-19 vaccination for our region’s qualifying general public and first responders.

Collaboration between Bristol Community College and the Fall River Fire Department is not new. The department has long supported the college’s Fire Science Technology program with equipment demonstrations and instruction. The first two directors of the college’s Fire Science Technology program were former Fall River Fire 8

Chiefs Thomas Moore and Louis A. Shea and many of the program’s instructors have served as ranking members of the department.

The Fall River Fire Department’s Division of Emergency Medical Services (FRFD EMS Unit) responds to approximately 12,500 emergency calls annually.

The department is highly rated as one of the best in Massachusetts by the Department of Public Health Division of Emergency Medical Services.

The college extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Fall River Fire Department’s Division of Emergency Medical Services (FRFD EMS Unit) including Fall River Fire Chief John D. Lynch, Director of Emergency Medical Services Timothy Oliveira, Deputy Director of Emergency Medical Services Beth Faunce, EMS Captain Robert Camara, EMS Captain Jen Farias, EMS Captain John Morin, EMS Captain Jennifer Rodriques, EMS Lieutenant William Lonardo, EMS Lieutenant Nicholas Silva and the department’s many dedicated paramedics.

HONORARY DEGREE OF ASSOCIATE IN HUMANE LETTERS The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education has granted Bristol Community College the right to award the honorary degree of Associate in Humane Letters. The college awards these degrees to individuals who illustrate, through a career of intellect and service, the best of Bristol Community College’s vision – advancing a vibrant, diverse community through education, learner by learner.

This year’s recipient is, for her support of higher education within the Commonwealth and dedication to the establishment and promotion of the college’s Attleboro Campus location.

Elizabeth A. Poirier is the former Massachusetts State Representative representing the 14th Bristol district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1999 to 2021. During that time, she also served as Massachusetts’ Third Assistant House Minority Leader.

Elizabeth has lived in North Attleboro for her entire life and attended North Attleboro High School before graduating from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business. Prior to becoming a State Representative, Elizabeth worked for many years in the banking industry before co-owning a retail business in downtown North Attleboro.

While in office, State Representative Poirier’s accomplishments included membership on the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting, the Foster Care Committee Caucus, the Special House Committee on Ethics, the Executive Committee of the House Women’s Caucus and a special appointment to the House Commission on Child Abuse and Neglect. During this time, she also served as the Assistant House Minority Leader. She considers it the honor of a lifetime to have served the good people of the 14th Bristol District.

She is equally dedicated to her local community and has served as a board member and former Vice

President of the North Attleboro/Plainville Chamber | of Commerce, a board member and former President of the Downtown Associates of North Attleboro, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Attleboro YMCA. Elizabeth is the recipient of the Community Impact Award, presented by the North Attleboro High School Alumni Association in 2014; the Legislator of the Year Award, presented by the International Interior Design Association in 2019; as well as the New Hope President’s Award, presented by the United Regional Chamber in 2020.

She is married to her husband, Kevin Poirier, Town Clerk of North Attleboro, who retires in early April this year. Mr. Poirier formerly served as Director of Development at Sturdy Memorial Hospital and as a Massachusetts State Representative for 23 years.

She has three grown sons and six grandchildren.

When she is not volunteering in her community, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family and friends.

LAST LECTURE The Last Lecture is a faculty honor created by the Bristol Community College Student Senate. The award honors one exemplary faculty member who has affected students’ education and their lives in significant ways.

Manal Mogawer, RDH, MSD, BDS, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene and Sophomore Clinical Coordinator at Bristol Community College was selected by students to deliver the Last Lecture at Bristol’s 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony.

GRAND MARSHALL Silvino Ferreira, Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems and Victoria Revier, Coordinator and Professor of Medical Administrative programs at Bristol Community College, were honored to serve as the Grand Marshalls at Bristol’s 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony. Continuing Bristol’s tradition of awarding this honor to one of the college’s longest-serving faculty or staff members, Ferreira and Revier will lead this year’s graduates and proud viewers to the virtual commencement stage.

COMMENCEMENT TELLS A STORY OF

The virtual commencement capped what some felt to be a ruined year. Perspectives of this year’s graduates revealed a message of hope among the difficulties.

Many viewed this year’s virtual commencement as a fitting ending to a year of resiliency.

Valedictorian Katherine Haley and salutatorian Lydia Bolger spoke about their life experiences and views regarding graduation.

Their inspiring stories exemplify how success and persistence go hand in hand.

Haley, who struggled with addiction and has been in and out of homeless shelters, is a strong believer that whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This mindset of resilience has allowed her to persevere through the pandemic and overcome adversity that tagged along with her ability to recover.

“I genuinely believe that’s how we lessen the stigma, if a valedictorian says, ‘Hey, I used to be homeless with a needle in my arm three years ago.’ That’s not that long ago and look at how my life has changed,” Haley said.

Haley also spoke about her gratitude in her speech at Bristol’s 2021 commencement. “How lucky each and every one of us is, to be able to be supported by those we love and by a faculty and student body that believe in us,” she said. “[Bristol] was kind enough to throw open its doors to traditional and nontraditional students alike giving each of us the same chance at bettering ourselves, regardless of our backgrounds. Our diversity is our strength.”

“Those who learned of my past, my criminal record, my struggle with addiction, and my road to recovery, did not even bat an eye,” she goes on to say. “I have never once been made to feel less than by any student, professor, or administrator at this school for my background.”

Bolger, salutatorian, talked about her life-long goal to earn a degree. “I finally got to graduate from college,” Bolger said. “That was a life-long ambition of mine.”

Bolger enrolled at Bristol as an ambitious adult learner. After losing her job of 10 years to her company’s closing, she decided to look at this as a life-changing opportunity to pursue a new career and further her education. As her life-long goal, earning a degree is a huge milestone for Bolger, and she attributes her success to her positive attitude and the help she received at Bristol.

Haley graduated with an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Bolger graduated with an Associate of Science in office administration.

Haley is heading to Brown University in the fall to complete a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and more recently, she became one of Glamour’s 2021 “Community College Women of the Year,” and Dr. Jill Biden, first lady of the United States congratulated her with a surprise Zoom call. Bolger is currently pursuing a second degree at Bristol in computer information systems and hopes to transfer to a four-year institution to become a frontend web developer.

Victoria Revier, Bristol’s 2021 grand marshall and coordinator & professor of medical administrative programs at Bristol thinks holding commencement digitally was the right call. “When you have a community college, there’s so many moving parts,” Revier said.

“We have veterans that are on campus, and we have people that are in our library,” she said.

“UMass Dartmouth and Bridgewater have dorms.

They can say, ‘You have been vaccinated, stay here.’ Bristol is community,” she said. “We could be having our own circles of the virus spreading.

We have people that are not going to become vaccinated.”

This year, it has become more necessary than ever that we learn to cope with the challenges we face.

Not all students were happy with the decision for graduation to be held virtually. Bristol graduate Rosemary Fletcher created a petition on Change. org to postpone the ceremony until an in-person graduation was possible. This petition received 607 signatures. Although this year’s graduation came as a disappointment to some, it also serves as a valuable reminder of a lesson many took to heart this year – the value of making the most of a bad situation.

“It’s been difficult, but all you can do is get up and try again,” Haley said. “You’ve got to keep getting up. When you get knocked down, you get back up again, and that’s how you succeed.”

Q: What are your dream goals?

A: I want to work with people who have had trouble with the legal system and need help getting their lives back on track.

Q: What has your experience at Bristol been like thus far?

A: It’s been a great experience at Bristol. It was a great transition -- from being three years out of high school with no higher education -- to working towards a bachelor’s transfer program.

It has been just the right amount of challenging, along with the right amount of understanding by professors, and the help and assistance that’s been offered by the school.

Q: How has the pandemic affected your time as a student?

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jake Wojtanowski, a liberal arts major with a concentration in psychology. Wojtanowski shared some insight on his journey - from its beginnings, to the disorienting past year we’ve all made our way through.

Q: What were your inspirations to go into your field of study?

A: I’d say lots of people can benefit from psychological assistance, therapy, counseling - whatever various forms that can take. I’m just really interested in helping people achieve their best self.

A: Well, I hadn’t taken any online classes before.

I was a full-time, in-person student in February of 2020. When we transitioned to all online, things were made a bit more difficult, but things have [also] been not so difficult. In some ways, there is a little bit more work -- certainly a lot more cause for self-discipline, keeping yourself on track, and getting all your work done when there’s not necessarily anyone there to report to. At the same time, there’s a little more leniency and you can work on your own schedule most of the time.

Q: What got you through any stresses of being a student?

A: Spending time with my family, which includes my partner, my two cats, and my bunny. Playing video games. Stuff.

Q: What is next for you?

A: Definitely transitioning to a 4-year school for a bachelor’s degree. Hopefully to find employment in my field -- to get my foot in the door, to build connections and start gaining experience.

HIANULA MONTEIRO

GRADUATE HIGHLIGHT:

HIANULA MONTEIRO Iris Aguiar | Staff Writer iaguiar12@bristolcc.edu

Hianula Monteiro is a student and single mother. She has a fouryear-old daughter, Aviih, who is her pride and joy. Monteiro was recently accepted to the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, as a biology major with a concentration in molecular and cellular biology.

As Monteiro grew up, Monteiro always had a sense of style.

interest in fashion and going into a profession that involved her sense of artistic passion. Soon after she had her daughter, she realized that she wanted to use her love of art to take a deeper look at nature, which sparked a deeper interest in studying nature through biology.

Her inspiration turned towards biotechnology because of its ever-growing role in medicinal research, where pharmaceutical and diagnostic products help to treat and prevent diseases.

She remembers talking to a friend about this field, and the conversation taking a quick turn when her friend made a remark basically telling her, “You should just stick to art.” She took that on as a challenge to prove that mindset wrong, but she is also pursuing this degree because she really loves nature and doesn’t want to pay a lot of money to learn art skills she already has.

She is graduating from Bristol this semester with her associate’s degree in Life Science/Biotechnology and Forensics DNA. Monteiro aspires to be in a position where her work betters the health and well-being of people in the community. She also wants to have a secure job to have a “happy ever after” for her daughter, Aviih. Monteiro wants to be able to afford her dream house with a nice backyard for Aviih to play in.

When she first started back in Sept. 2019, her experience at Bristol was great. She really pushed herself to not only achieve her goals, but she learned a lot.

“As soon as I brought my daughter to school I would go to the library. While I wasn’t in class, I would utilize the library to do assignments and homework or even go over materials. This would happen Monday through Friday,” Monteiro stated.

Through her education at Bristol, she has gained much confidence

and determination to strive for the kind of life she wishes for her family.

Monteiro faced some challenges at Bristol. “I had to face the fears of failure and fight off thoughts of not being smart enough to get a science degree. After that, I let my desire to learn take over and drive me,” she said.

The pandemic also presented other challenges, but time management was key to balancing also being a mother. She had to structure her study time around her child’s needs, as Aviih was kept home from school. It was a distracting and difficult time, but they got through it.

The pandemic really shifted things for her because she was a straight ‘A’ student. So, when classes began remotely, she saw her first ‘B.’ Even though it was a difficult time she was able to adjust and follow a routine to help her stay on track. She strived to work hard and continue her education even when the cards may not have been in her favor.

Not only did the pandemic affect her, it also affected Aviih.

It was a huge change, especially for a four-year-old not being able to play outside with her family and friends. Having to be at home 24/7 and only have her mom to play with, who had her studies to juggle, was a stressor for both of them.

traumatic change in this world, her daughter’s patience kept her on track. “She is a very smart, loving and caring little girl,” Monteiro said. She also highlights that her daughter knows what DNA stands for, an impressive fact considering many adults don’t even know this.

Dartmouth where she’ll study as a biology major with a concentration in molecular and cellular biology.

Keeping her eye on the goal of getting a degree and unlocking better opportunities was also a significant motivator for her.

Monteiro’s plan for the future is to continue her education. She was recently accepted into UMASS 19

Victoria Pena, 31, is an animated, bubbly wife and mother. She’s also graduating from general studies health science at Bristol Community College during a global pandemic that makes it one of the most difficult times for the major she chose. She eagerly shares some of her experiences here at Bristol.

Pena has big plans for her future in the medical field. She hopes to become a certified nursing midwife. “I love babies! I love pregnant women! I do! And their bellies, they’re just so cute! I want to help bring in new life,” Pena says.

Pena had an exceptional time here at Bristol. She got really close with her classmates, and enjoyed a very welcoming, family-like teaching staff. “The teachers were a huge help, they did the best they could whether (using) email, private calls or through Zoom,” she says.

The pandemic became a huge challenge to her schooling, as she had to transition to being confined to her home along with her two children, ages 2 and 10. Trying to get her schoolwork done, while also being a mom and helping her oldest daughter with virtual learning, has been a lot to navigate.

In a sunny courtyard next to New Bedford’s Bristol campus, a vibrantly pink-haired, 23-year-old, Alexandria Leonard sits. Graduating this year, she shares her struggles, her passions and her fight to graduation.

In 2015 I came here and dropped out my first semester. (Leonard giggles.) And then I came back in 2018.

Q: What’s your name, age and major?

A: I’m still thinking about it. So, my passion is psychology, so definitely something in psychology. I’ve always wanted to work with something with adolescence and mental health. But right now, I’m working in substance abuse with adults, and … I kind of love it! So I don’t know if I wanna stay in substance abuse or go to mental health. With substance abuse and mental health it’s both of

Q: Did you take a gap year ever?

A: Well. Yes, I graduated in 2015.

Q: What do you expect to do after you graduate?

them so you’re dealing with both.

And I definitely have experience in both. So, I feel like I can relate more and help people more because I’ve been there.

Q: Do you mind elaborating more on that?

A: No. So, I had a journey with addiction. It started when I was 14, and I actually overdosed a few times. I had to go to crisis centers and facilities. And I had my own journey with mental health. I was clean for a few years, and then in 2017, my dad died. And I just kind of went through a really dark path, and I experimented with substances I really never experienced before and kind of just didn’t care about my life. I ended up having a really bad health scare, and I thought I was going to die. So I quit everything - cold turkey. And It will be four years in August. So ever since then, I really want to help people.

Q: Wow. So that’s what helped fuel your love for psychology, right?

A: Yeah. So, even as a teenager, I knew I wanted to do something in psychology because of my history with mental health, but when I recovered from addiction, I wanted to help people because… obviously you can help people if you have never had an experience, but it’s not the same.

And the place I work at I don’t like the place, but I like the job.

you for everything,” it makes me think, wow, this is why I do this.

So now that I started this job, this is why I started it because I wanted to tell my story because they are there and they think, “Oh, I’m not going to amount to nothing. I’m never going to get a good job. I cant do anything.”

YES YOU CAN! I’m here and I’m 23-years-old. And sometimes I get embarrassed when they ask me, “Oh, what kind of drugs did you do?” At first, I’m like... (Leonard makes a sour face.) ...but sometimes it’s just to be nosey, and sometimes it’s just to know, like genuine.

Q: What got you through, just being a student, you know?

A: Maaaannn! Its been a tough journey but even now my virtual ceremony is tomorrow.

I’m disappointed in myself a little bit because I’m not getting my

diploma until September because I have to retake a couple classes, but I think the motivation level roller coaster I have will be high and then low, and sometimes I’ll want to give up, but then I think about what I just told you and I think about my dad. And I think about how I’m going to be going to the same school he went to next year.

Q: Wow what a little … like propeller to keep you going, huh?

A: Yeah! So, I I just think about him because when he was alive I was like a crappy kid, so I want to make him proud. So, it’s another reason I’m trying to push through it and get there, and get my master’s. So, I can do that and help more people.

A: Yeah, haha! Like I get so freaked out, but then I’m doing it, and I’m, wow, this isn’t even that bad.

Q: You have to walk up like you already know them!

A: Yeah, like confidence is key.

Q: What’s your dream job?

And like that I had made a fast friend and learned a lot of valuable lessons I will never forget in 8 minutes. This story will stick with me for the rest of my days, and keep me going on in my hardest ones. As I hope it will for whoever reads this.

Q: What’s your major?

A: My major is computer information systems with a concentration in game development, game programming.

Q: What do you plan on doing with that career?

A: My plan right now after graduating is just to go to a 4-year school and just work in the industry. To create video games.

Q: What motivated you to go into your field of study?

A: I’ve been creating video games pretty much since middle school, so I’m set on it. It just kind of

came naturally to me, so I decided to pursue it. I did programming vocationally in high school, and since then, I’ve just been learning a lot. And, it just came naturally that I’ve been studying it in college as well.

Q: I see that you’ve got a lot of merchandise. So what’s the vibe in your room like?

A: Basically just stuff I buy just all around my room.

All that. So, I just have a whole bunch of posters, whole bunch of figurines, plushies.

Q: What anime is that in the background?

A: There are plenty in the background. Haha!

The biggest one you see is from an anime called “Re:Zero.” I go to something called an artist ally at conventions and some of the art is just characters artists have drawn. I just buy those and think they look cool, slap them on my wall. I still have more, and I’m trying to fit some in spaces.

Q: Yeah, I take it you’re a big anime fan.

A: I also have a shirt from one of my conventions on.

Q: Do you read manga as well?

A: Oh boy, do I! Hold on. (Gomes gets up to show collection.) I have a little library over here, of all that stuff. I have around 120 volumes right now of manga.

Q: Sweet! I do have more questions, though.

What has your experience at Bristol been like?

A: Well before the whole going online thing, it was pretty good. I just went to school, just had a ride and all that. Sometimes I would take the bus there.

Transportation’s been a lot easier for me. All I need is to take a few steps from my bed to the computer, which is a pretty daunting experience. The workload has been a little bit more with online classes because you have to kind of manage your own time. So I’ll sprinkle it in throughout the day.

Q: Have there been any challenges you’ve seen during your school experience?

A: Definitely group work, because a lot of people don’t meet [online]. Mainly towards the beginning of the switch, I would be asking them have you done your work and they’d be like “Oh my God, I forgot I was in the class. I’m sorry.” I’ve had that happen a couple times, but more now the motivation has been a little low, I’m guessing for some people.

Q: What got you through the stresses of being a student?

Q: How has the pandemic affected your time as a student?

A: Before then, I worked a little bit more while taking classes, ‘cause I would specifically set my time in school for studying specifically, and then I have my home time to myself. But since they’re kind of mixed together, I reduced my hours at work to compensate for that so I can focus a little bit more on school.

A: I have a to do list on one of my monitors. So once I see it going down, I could finally take a chill day, so I can just spend a little bit more time to myself, rather than getting stuck having to worry about this laundry list of stuff to do.

Q: I heard you do graphic design too. Is that true?

A: I do art specifically, like over here is a drawing tablet. It comes with a pen and everything. I really do like 2D art more so. I have specifically for my game production class, but focusing more on interfaces, which is a little bit new for me, but mainly I focus on 2D character art.

Q: What kind of drawings do you like to illustrate?

A: I mainly focus on just drawing people’s characters. Just kind of like pin-up designs. Like characters that are mainly in the shot with very little background, that kind of the style. You’ll see this in the industry more, that a lot more women are drawn because it’s a lot easier to draw, like the shapes. So I focus more on that, and also it’s where the most money gets from. A lot of people like that drawn.

Q: So how has drawing affected your pandemic life? Is it good, bad?

Q: Has that gotten you through the pandemic?

Drawing in general?

A: I mean, it’s my little side hustle. I do it for money, so.

Q: Dude, that’s awesome. How much are you getting paid for that, if you don’t mind me asking?

A: Not much because I’ve been trying to focus more on drawing for myself rather than clients, so my cues have been really low. When I go to my 4year school I might increase production, because I don’t want to go back to retail. On a good month, I would say I can make $100 a month, which isn’t astounding numbers, but it’s better than nothing.

I know a lot of full-time artists get a lot more than minimum wage. It comes with a lot of added stress.

I know some artists that do stuff full-time, and I could never deal with that stress of just having like ten people ask you everyday, “Hey, where’s my commission?” while you’re taking a breather day.

It’s a little bit stressful to do it all the time.

Q: Is that stress part of the pandemic itself, or is it just the drawing thing?

A: I would say working at home stress mainly. Not specifically related to the pandemic.

A: I would say it would be bad if I didn’t like it, but I do. I’ve been drawing for classes as well, which in the game industry, it’s a little bit rare to see a programmer with an artistic background, so that makes me a little bit more of a jack of all trades. It’s less focused on my major, just more of a hobby I have that can work with my major pretty well. They’ll also be studying a little bit in my 4-year college because they do require a little bit of art classes to get my bachelor’s, so I already have some experience. Having a little bit more I mean wouldn’t hurt at all. Just a little bit more creativity that I can add to the table.

Q: We’re doing a little piece about what’s next for the Bristol community, so we want to know what’s next for you.

A: Regarding the pandemic, I actually got vaccinated recently. Like fully vaccinated. So I’m doing fine doing my part. So, I would recommend that everyone, at least you know, do that to help the future a little bit.

Q: Do you have anything else that you want to talk about? Any questions for me?

A: The pandemic sucked, but just make sure you do your part. I highly do recommend vaccinations. I mean I tried it out, and I haven’t exploded or anything yet, so we’re doing good on that part.

Q: When did you enroll at Bristol?

A: I enrolled in Bristol in 2009, then in 2010. Then in 2013, but because I was a young mom, I was never able to fully finish. 2017 was the first semester that I took that was actually successful. I was like OK, I want to not continue until my military husband is done with the fire academy. Once he finished in the spring of 2019, I enrolled in the fall 2019, and I didn’t look back. One day I really want to find out what PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) is all about. So I went into the meeting and it was a little bit crazy. Because I’ve done presidency for my husband’s military unit and managed in different capacities, I could see right away that there was an issue with these meetings. So I spoke up and kind of give some suggestions and based off of that meeting I was asked to take over as Vice President of PTK.

Q: You got shut down the same semester as COVID started, right?

A: Yes, yes, the same thing. Every class that I was in, I just sent out a lot of info. I stayed involved in the BCC app, just giving as much information as possible...so we started back up in the fall of 2020. I was so involved with the BCC app, I had to get involved in something that gave me more access to students. So in November 2020, I got involved in Student Senate. It gave me an opportunity to better serve Bristol.

Q: Is your obvious leadership something that you’ve been born with to do? Or is it the pandemic’s effect?

GRADUATE HIGHLIGHT:

MAGIE HUDSON

A: I think I’ve had, but because I started working at a very young age, I have a lot of experience just with people. I grew up in a lot of violence, gangs, so a lot of influence wasn’t there. However, I read a lot of books as a child. It was probably my husband and those books that inspired me. Bringing books to the dinner table was important for unity. I unfortunately ended up being incarcerated for being at the wrong place, wrong time. I was only 17 years old. But that kind of helped me push myself forward. Just because these things happen to you, it doesn’t have to define you. When I see these young adults on the BCC app, and when I see the way

they talk, it kind of brings me back to how I grew up. If I could bring sunshine into someone’s life, that’s my way of giving back.

Q: Is there anything that you have influenced or voiced your opinion on that changed college policy?

A: That’s a really, really good question. There is a proposal that we started where we would attach the syllabus to the course description so that students who want to take this course can decide. I was the chair of academic affairs proposals when that fell under my scope.

The college’s union shut it down. Although, instead of a syllabus, there will be the course description, and then there will be a professor email button. It’s kind of like a happy medium. Now I know Michael Fox, my advisor,

has asked me about doing the Board of Trustees Alumni.

Q: Did he ask you because you were in the student senate before, and you have all this experience and now they’re giving you an inside scoop?

A: Yeah, so I think so. But it’s been offered to me if I want to take it, and so I think I don’t know. You already see issues at Bryant University, so I’m going to be very involved with that. The chair of academic affair’s proposals were academic based and I think a lot of that had to do because of COVID. There were a lot of concerns around academics, and I was able to resolve so many of them.

And so they saw the type of work that I did, and I got a lot of likes, who knows?

Q: Do you think your servitude is reflected in your experience at Bristol, with the pandemic going on?

How do you connect that?

A: I needed to advocate and make sure that people knew about the Bristol food market and signed up. We have this great resource. Maybe if I felt like I don’t need this, maybe they do. So just go ahead and put it out there. Because, you know, you’re stuck inside a home.

Are they by themselves in an apartment or in a condo?

Do they have support systems? That was my fear always that they feel like there’s no way out. Not on my watch, anyways!

Q: What has been your favorite experience at Bristol?

A: I want to say like the honor’s research presentations.

And I think Bristol mobile food market because it was the only time that we were able to come together.

Q: Is there anything better you think the college can do and in terms of policies and just being a college?

A: I didn’t necessarily hear too much about Bristol concerns over mental health of students through COVID and the resources that are available. if there was one thing that I could express to the Board of Trustees or to anyone, is that that’s crucial.

Q: Have you had any people come up to you and say that mental health counseling is one thing that I think Bristol should improve on?

A: “I feel so stressed, I feel so alone.” Yeah, there was.

There was a few students that definitely did state that.

I would have loved to have seen Bristol do something more about that. The biggest outlet was the BCC app.

Word spreads like that on the BCC app, So, like I was like, why are we not talking about this? If we don’t talk about it, we’re almost sending that message that we don’t care. And that’s not a good image. And we do care, and so we need to talk about it somewhere.

Q: What’s next for you?

A: So, the next thing for me is definitely finding my community at Bryant. Finding what issues might be at Bryant and how I can be an asset to whatever issues might be going on there. I’ve already established one which is transfer students. I’m a transfer student. So there needs to be a little bit of change there. I remember having a conversation with Dr. Buglione where I said I’m feeling this way. They keep sending me class of 2025. I’m not class of 2025. They were just told to like reach out, and they know nothing, and so, I want to change that.

Communication is not as strong at Bryant as I would like it to be, and I remember saying that to Chad. I said if there were so many students that felt that way transferring from Bristol to Bryant, why is this still an issue? Why has no one done something about this? My next project is making the transfer experience a lot better for other students. It’s not going to change anything for me ‘cause my deposit is made. I’m going to Bryant. I love Bryant, but if there’s one thing I’m going to change is that. Everything I’ve learned at Bristol is, it might not be as easy and as streamlined as you would have thought or hoped for, but you just got to keep going. You’ve got to keep fighting for that proposal.

SOCIAL LIVES DURING

Quarantine has changed how students live, work, and interact with each other. But how much has the social isolation altered our approach to the relationships we have with others? Can things return to the way they were before?

What if we wanted to catch up with our friends in a Zoom call? It’s better than nothing, but it’s not the same.

When you’re online, you lose a layer of interaction that’s vital when you want to connect with a fellow classmate, according to Dr. Michael Bensink, director of student wellness at Bristol Community College.

“The one thing that you don’t get on a screen is the energetic response.

The same kind you get when you’re interacting with people face-to-face.”

He talked about how in the real world, “you’re able to touch, joke, and recognize social cues when in front of another human.” But that’s all missing in the online world.

We also miss our ability to have spontaneous conversations. Emma Montague, director of student and family engagement (SFE), said, “It’s tricky to get a casual conversation in a virtual space.” Without the element of physically being in a classroom or campus, students have found it hard to communicate with one another.

“You almost feel like you need a

reason to meet with someone versus just a casual ‘Hey! How’s it going?”

Students miss the moments in between classes where students can talk to each other, according to Mike Fox, assistant director of SFE. “The conversations that you have before a course starts, or a person you see as you’re walking to class, those are little micro-interactions that sort of make up your day.” These are opportunities to interact that come naturally, but people are having a difficult time making small talk when you have to force yourself to create a Zoom room.

Without these micro-interactions, it could even complicate the academic success of some students.

When asked if the transition to online classes may be affecting our students’ ability to learn, Fox said, “It’s the safest way for us to do it.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s any easier for them to be successful in a classroom, and they might have to work extra hard to get to the place they want to be.”

Part of this could be because without meeting others, it can create a sense of loneliness that would impact morale. Bensink, from the wellness center, said “this could potentially be hard for those who are more extroverted, or have difficult relationships at home.”

“Particularly if they don’t have a household that they’re normally interacting with, or if they have a household that’s not necessarily hospitable,” he said. “If they are not comfortable with the people they’re with that could be challenging because they can’t get away from them.”

How do we make the isolation better? Is there any way we can replicate what we’re missing when we’re stuck in our homes?

“Recognizing what a person may be missing is going to be more helpful if they dig deeper to see what specifically they are missing,” Bensink said.

This could be as simple as the faceto-face element. But it could also be things like emotional support, or just having a good laugh with someone you relate to.

One of the best ways to do this would be to visit things like a community group, or you may check out online games that allow interaction.

As long as you’re able to make a substitute for what you’re missing, you will be able to make it through the home isolation. Montague adds, “If there isn’t someone else that you can talk to, we are here.”

Figuring out next steps after college has always been a challenge for graduating students. Trying to navigate that experience with the pandemic has complicated the economic and employment factors, adding extra layers of difficulty.

Feeling overwhelmed, or like you have no direction?

You’re not alone. The HAWK has some advice for tackling life after college.

Be Flexible: Explore industries that are thriving or new and upcoming. Getting experience outside of your comfort zone can teach new skills that complement the ones you gained from your degree.

Lean on school for support: Bristol offers students a valuable resource with the college central network.

This website helps students target jobs and advertise themselves – and is much better than those annoying emails from Indeed or other job search websites. College central network is under-utilized and can be beneficial for getting connected with a career advisor to develop a game plan for your next step.

Give yourself time to adjust: The year after college can be filled with mixed emotions of relief and fear. Making

the decision to take time off after college is becoming more common. A home situation doesn’t always facilitate a good learning environment, and you may not get that same independence that you get on campus. Taking a gap year can help to develop skills to be successful in your career. It’s said to give a greater understanding of other cultures and responsibilities in the real world career platform. Juliette Locke, majoring in business, shared, “I am so thankful for my gap year, I always recommend it to family and friends.”

I was the only one out of my friends that was taking a gap year at the time to unknowingly experience how useful and informative it was by directing into my future career path. By switching my major from education to business, I now am a event planner and bartender for my current employment. I can’t speak more highly for a gap year!

Stay positive, allow yourself room to explore and grow, and if you don’t know what to do next, utilize available resources. Navigating uncharted waters can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone, and persistence will help you move forward to something great.

JOB MARKET REMAINS UNCERTAIN FOR GRADUATES, DESPITE GRADUAL HEALING Jordan Nowick | Senior Staff Writer | jnowick11@bristolcc.edu

“Work from home to stop the spread,” they said a year ago. All the while, every major industry ranging from hospitality, tourism, food service, and entertainment came to a screeching halt.

College campuses eviscerated their dormitories, and students were told to work online. For many, the prospect of completing their education for a more secure, financially-sound future seemed more like a scene from the memory - a fleeting blip.

More than one year has passed since then, and we’ve somehow toughed it out through a truly disorienting, exhausting year. The future may seem a bit brighter in light of vaccine rollouts, current dips in cases and deaths nationwide, and a collective desire to return to normalcy.

The initial April 2020 unemployment spike, which clocked in at 14.7%, has dropped to around 6% over the past year, according to a study published by the Statista Research Department, but we still have much ground to cover before this is over before college students may be able to enter a less-hostile, more certain workforce.

“I think the job market is beginning to heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 2021 graduates will still need a whole lot of flexibility and determination as they begin their job hunt” says Liz McCarthy, coordinator of career planning and development at Bristol. “The class of 2020 graduated in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

The pandemic has torn through the economy, bringing major industries to an ultimate standstill.”

McCarthy notes that the economy has added around 900,000 jobs since the beginning of the pandemic, but that the path to employment still may not be easy for some.

For one, the typical interview process has been a bit upended since the pandemic hit. Many 36

interviews are held virtually now - one must be prepared to be evaluated from the second their camera turns on, to the minute it switches off. It is necessary for them to keep their thoughts and speaking points all the more organized.

Second, many of the sectors mentioned above are still faced with slow rates of recovery. For instance, the restaurant industry closed out 2020 with sales $240 billion less than the National Restaurant Association’s projections, with 110,000 establishments closing permanently.

Despite these seemingly grim figures, jobs in healthcare, nursing, respiratory therapy, shopping and delivery companies, computer programming, business support, and online learning communities are on the rise, according to McCarthy. Even as the economy has slowly begun its healing process, students are still apt to face one that is oversaturated and degree-inflated once life returns closer to normalcy.

This is not necessarily a fault of their own. Demands for bachelors’ degrees are still all too commonplace amongst employers -- despite only 16% of employees holding the same qualifications that 70% of employers offering middle-skill positions ask for, according to Lola Fadulu, former assistant editor with “The Atlantic.

However, a bit of persistence, resilience, and resourceful stone-stepping may help students along their way.

“I think an important thing for students to know about their first job out of college is -- a lot of them think it’s their career, and it’s not,” says McCarthy. “It’s their first job out of college -- it’s just a step along the way as they enter their career path and career journey.”

BRISTOL Gets ready for what’s next on campus

The Bristol community has faced a unique year and a half full of challenges caused by the global pandemic. As we all look forward to getting back on campus, faculty have been busy using the lessons learned over the past year to ensure the transition is as successful as possible.

In an email sent out to students on April 27, the school announced plans to expand in-person classes during the upcoming summer and fall semesters.

The email outlined precautions in place to ensure a safe return for all, including contact tracing and mask wearing.

President Laura Douglas spoke to The HAWK this past May about the school’s successful pandemic response thus far.

“We’ve been very fortunate at Bristol Community College. We started planning for the pandemic in January of 2020, before it was even on most people’s radars. We were meeting on the weekends and beginning to plan what this might look like. We formed an emergency operations committee, and we invested a lot of time and energy learning everything we could about COVID.” Douglas explained that as a result of the school taking COVID-19 seriously from an early date and adopting safety recommendations such as mask wearing and decreasing the density on campus, there has not been a single instance of transmission 40

on campus. A small number of quickly contained cases have been reported, the first occurring on October 22, well over six months after the virus’ initial spread in the United States.

“We’re still going to have social distancing. We’re still going to ask people to wash their hands and wear a mask. I think you can expect mask wearing to be a constant inside the buildings for all of the summer and fall semesters,” she continued.

Along with the continuation of the effective precautions already in place, Douglas shared that the school has invested in contact tracing technology for the upcoming semesters. The system works via the scanning of QR codes and will efficiently notify those in the community of potential exposure, ensuring the virus continues to be quickly contained.

On the topic of vaccinations, the president notes that she is optimistic proof of inoculation will not be necessary, but the decision is not yet set in stone.

“We will wait to see what happens - it may not be necessary to require a vaccine if our students and our faculty and staff and our entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts does really well, and all indicators right now show that we’re doing very well.”

Douglas emphasized that the challenges posed due to COVID-19 have been a learning opportunity, teaching faculty important lessons about leadership.

“We learned that we had to really connect emotionally with our students and our faculty and staff. Everything we do connects to emotions, and emotions are part of who we are, and it will very much inform the way we have relationships with our students and our co-workers,” she said.

Kate O’Hara, vice president of student services & enrollment management, added that “More than ever, personal connections and personal relationships are what are most important in the work that we do, because we’re not physically there. Not being on campus with students has been such a challenge.”

Despite that challenge, O’Hara also speaks of the value of the lessons learned during this time.

“I think there’s a lot of really cool things we’ve learned over the last year - that we can reach students in different ways that we never could have dreamed of, and I think that will continue,” she said.

Suzanne M. Buglione, vice president of academic affairs, has also seen the positives of reaching students through an online format.

“The number of students who have taken advantage of virtual services like the library and tutoring is phenomenal, so we’re thinking we’ll be keeping those services virtual to some degree as we move forward,” she said.

As faculty have seen the benefits of the use of services already offered by the college, they’ve been planning a new service to meet the specific needs students have in these particularly difficult times.

O’Hara informed The HAWK that the school “just hired an associate director and will be bringing on four additional staff members to help students who have had to pause their education over the past year and a half.”

These staff members will be a part of the new success center at Bristol and will be reaching out to lapsed students to see what assistance they need in getting back on track to continue their academic careers.

As the faculty reflects on the unprecedented year and a half we’ve all had and looks forward to the future, there is a common thread among their sentiments: the resiliency of the community, and its power in caring for and supporting one another.

As Buglione said, “everyone has been amazing in how persistent they’ve been in moving forward through this pandemic. We get inspiration from our students all the time, and the deans and the faculty inspire me. We really have to take a moment and look back and think about how amazing it is that we’ve been able to do what we’ve done.”
