cakes Catering Cakes With the traditional wedding cake now in less demand than ever before, you can treat your guests to some delectable desserts that complement both you and your husband’s personalities. Serving wedding cake in place of dessert is becoming more common as brides search for ways to reduce costs, so don’t be afraid to think outside the square; individuality will ensure your wedding will be one of beautiful and lasting memories. Catering Selecting a caterer can be a daunting task, but finding a menu to complement the style of your wedding and the palates of your guests doesn’t need to be as difficult as you’d imagined. More and more couples are opting for more distinctive flavours than the traditional ‘fillet of beef’ meal, whether it be a continental cuisine or a family favourite, so open your mind to different flavours and less conservative options; you never know, you might just discover a brand new favourite meal!

Decorations Wedding decorations create the overall theme of your wedding. They set the mood for your special day, and present your guests with a beautiful and memorable setting. From simple and casual to formal and traditional, taking the time to select coordinating decorations to create a theme will have your guests assuming you’ve hired a wedding coordinator! The internet is an ever-growing wedding planning tool, with a huge range of websites able to provide high-quality, stylish goods at a fraction of the price of goods purchased in-store, so don’t be afraid to shop online, it is a trade secret of some of the best wedding stylists around! Ensure you purchase your products well in advance and allow for Customs delays, expect purchases to take anywhere from 2-5 weeks to arrive from overseas.

33 | THE Bridal BIBLE

These days, less is more, so try to stick to one focal piece and work smaller decorations around it, rather than having lots of larger-than-life decorations like conversation-inhibiting centrepieces on each table- your guests will thank you for it!

Sweet Love lolly buffets are becoming more and more popular, thanks to the fact that they are so inexpensive, create colour and ‘buzz’ and serve as a cute and far less expensive alternative to traditional wedding favours.

What you’ll need to create your own Lolly Buffet: One large table and tablecloth 8-15 glass vases and jars of varying sizes. A great range of inexpensive jars can be purchased from stores such as Spotlight, Target and discount variety stores. Assorted lollies. Try to select lollies that match your weddings colour theme. In summer, if your reception is outside, avoid sweets that may melt such as chocolate, and for all seasons try to avoid sticky lollies such as boiled lollies as these tend to stick together. For more difficult colours such as black, gold and silver, make up some cupcakes with coloured icing (available from the supermarket, speciality cake stores and some decorator stores such as Spotlight) and embellishments of your choice such as ribbon. Noodle boxes or organza favour bags. We recommend noodle boxes as they stop any sugar-covered lollies making a mess, and can be dressed up very easily with ribbon and personalised labels. For an ultra-personalised touch, have monogrammed ribbon printed with yours and your husbands names and the date of your wedding, which serves as a cute, non-dust-collecting keepsake for your guests to treasure. Use the ribbon to wrap up the lolly boxes. Hop online and type ‘printed ribbon’ to find a great range of suppliers worldwide.

Entertainment Music Great entertainment is key to any enjoyable event, especially your wedding, and selecting experienced and professional entertainers is an important decision. A good entertainer will take into account the room size of your reception to ensure the noiselevel complements this, and above all, will ensure it suits your tastes and requests. They will know how to keep your reception moving and keep people dancing, how to save a reception if something goes wrong, and will have footage of recent wedding receptions available to view. It’s a good idea to organise entertainment and music fairly early on to avoid disappointment, so you first have to decide whether you will use live entertainment or a DJ.

39 | THE Bridal BIBLE

The benefits of live entertainment are that the sound quality is admittedly far better, however they may not always be able to perform every song, so it’s important to establish what you want from the entertainment from the beginning.

Follow our guide on page 52 to help you to find the dress of your dreams that you’ll not only look amazing in, but will feel comfortable in too. Bridesmaids Dresses As the bride, it is your privilege to select the colour and style of your bridesmaids’ dresses. Go on a girls day out to select dresses that your bridesmaids will be happy wearing and you will have one very happy bridal party! Mother of the Bride/Groom It is important for the Mother of the Bride or Groom to feel included in the planning of your wedding, so go shopping together to get a good idea of what styles she feels comfortable in, whilst finding an outfit that complements your bridal party.

Flowers Selecting flowers is one of the fun parts of planning your wedding as it is so often a direct reflection of your style. From the bouquets to boutonierres, centrepieces to pomanders, the options are endless and the only limit is your budget. Your selections don’t neccesarily have to match your colour scheme, but they should complement it, as with your gown and the clothing of the bridal party. Choosing a large variation of flowers can sometimes look messy, so it is often a much better idea to select a flower that comes in a variation of colours such as roses, lilies, orchids and tulips. Blooms which are in season will assist in keeping within your budget, but finding flowers you love that also suit your wedding theme can be a little more challenging, so doing your homework beforehand is a good idea.

Follow our guide on the following page to help you find in-season flowers whilst still complementing your overall theme.

Hair Make-Up Hair and makeup fashions change as quickly as seasons so it is important to select looks that will still be beautiful and ‘you’ when you look back on your wedding, whether it be in 10 years or 80 years! A good Hair and Make-Up Artist will know how to style your hair and make-up to suit your face, complexion, and your gown. Shop around and ensure you have a trial well before your wedding date, making sure you take lots of photos to get your friends and family’s opinions also. Unfortunately, almost anyone can refer to themselves as a Hair & Make-Up Artist with no qualifications or experience, so it is important to do your homework to ensure you are in safe hands. As expensive as weddings can get, it is important to research your Hair & Make-Up Artist, and the reason for this is simple- if you are having professional photographs taken, the photographs will show up everything, including poor make-up application, which no amount of Photoshop can fix. Christianne and Kellie from Dolly Mixture add, “Don’t judge a make-up artist solely on the brand of cosmetics they have in their kit. Instead request to see a portfolio of their work and look for different looks, this is the best proof that your Make-Up Artist knows their stuff.” Finally, avoid hairstyles that are overly constructed as these styles can often look harsh and age you significantly.

Health Beauty Looking your best for your big day is easier than you may think, with a wide range of options to suit every budget and lifestyle. Your personal trainer or gym instructor can tailor a fitness regime to suit your needs to have you looking your best for your wedding day and beyond. Remember to drink plenty of water in the lead up to the wedding, this will not only have your skin glowing, it will give you the energy to tackle the last of your wedding plans. Eat a balanced diet filled with lots of green, leafy vegetables for a good source of Vitamins A, C, K and folate- they will fill you up for longer meaning you won’t feel hungry as often, and they contain low GI, meaning you’ll have more energy for longer. Taking a multi-vitamin is also highly recommended; paired with a balanced diet you’ll have the stamina to take on even the most difficult of wedding plans, and your hair, skin and nails with thank you for it. Salmon, legumes, nuts, poultry, eggs, whole grains, oysters and carrots are among the best foods for healthy hair and skin function, and enjoy a few small servings of these each day and you’ll notice less problematic skin, shinier more manageable hair and less-brittle nails.

Homemade Honey & Avocado mask

Believe it or not, honey is often the active ingredient in some of the world’s most expensive skin care products, and when you try this easy homemade recipe you’ll see why. Honey has amazing antioxidant and anti-microbial properties to help protect the skin from damage caused by UV rays, supports the skins ability to restore itself, rejuvenates depleted skin cells and assists in the treatment of hormonal acne. Honey masks can help speed up the skins recovery process from a breakout, as it absorbs impurities from your pores and, paired with avocado, rich with fatty acids that assist with slowing the signs of aging, becomes a vitamin-packed cocktail your skin will thank you for. Simply blend two tablespoons of honey with 1 avocado to form a smooth paste and slather onto your skin for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water to reveal a cleaner, softer and more glowing complexion!

Drink plenty of water. Adam from Rejuvenate Health & Fitness explains “Your body is made up of 80% water and even if you become slightly dehydrated, you are immediately putting yourself at risk of a decreased immune system and fatigue. Aim to drink 2 litres of pure water throughout day to maintain high energy levels and immunity from sickness.” That ‘grumbling’ feeling in your stomach is often not what you think it is, with studies proving that this is commonly your body’s way of telling you that you are dehydrated, not hungry. So next time you feel ‘hungry’ not long after a meal, opt for a glass of water instead, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Exercise. Even 20 minutes of brisk walking per day will have you looking and feeling better, more toned, more energetic and ‘on-the-ball’. Exercise increases your metabolic rate, burns calories, releases serotonin- the feel-good chemical your brain produces, and endorphins, the brain’s natural painkiller- 3 times more potent than morphine.

Eat breakfast. The saying is tired but true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Without food to kick-start the morning, your body goes into ‘survival mode’ and actually slows down your metabolism, meaning your body will store the food it does have in the form of fat, therefore potentially increasing your body weight if skipping breakfast is done often.

Get at least 8 hours of of good-quality sleep each night. Sleeping has been scientifically proven to keep your heart healthy, can assist to prevent cancer, reduces stress & inflammation, makes you more alert, aids in memory function, can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of depression and helps your body make neccesary repairs. If that’s not enough to convince you sleep is the magical youth-elixir everyone is searching for, nothing is!

10 Tips for a 5

Don’t over-exercise. Too much exercise can often have a detrimental effect on your body. It is always a good idea to consult a fitness professional before embarking on any new exercise routine to establish the best regime for you.

Cuddle! Physical contact is extremely important for your well-being and what better way to boost your health than to have a good cuddle-fest with your beloved! Physical and emotional contact with your partner also releases serotonin, meaning you’ll feel happier, less stressed and much more prepared to take on your wedding plans without turning into Bridezilla!

Eat less, more often. Eating smaller meals consistently throughout the day boosts the rate your body processes food, meaning it goes into ‘survival mode’ less often and doesn’t feel the need to hang onto food longer than it should. Aim for 5 meals per day, with each portion 20% smaller than your average meal size. Cameron Diaz swears by this method so the proof’s in the pudding!

healthier you!

Avoid processed foods where possible. We all know a slice of mudcake or a bag of chips are good for the soul, so we’re not going to tell you to completely cut out occasional happy foods, but eating them in moderation means you’ll feel less bloated and sluggish and more energetic more often. Plus, you’re much more likely to slip into the next dress size down if you control the fats and sugars you consume.

Drink green tea. There are an amazing variety of deliciously-flavoured green teas available these days, and according to a Harvard Medical study, the benefits of drinking green include reduced risk of skin, breast, lung, colon, oesophageal and bladder cancers. Green tea can also assist with weight-loss, cognitive functioning and the prevention of Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

Get enough sunlight. Ever wondered why everyone seems so much happier during the warmer months? Sunlight produces endorphins, maintains immunity from sickness, and can aid in preventing a myriad of health conditions including depression & osteoporosis, so aim for 10-20 minutes of indirect sunlight each day.

The berry healthy tummy-filler Blueberries are the yummiest superfood of them all, and it’s easy to see why they’re becoming a popular alternative to many popular fruits and vegetables. Not only are they delicious and versatile, they are rich in antioxidants, boost your immune system to prevent infections, neutralise free-radicals to slow aging, aid in reducing fat around your waist, preserve vision and memory function and can even assist to remedy colon and liver cancers. Try our delicious berry smoothie, a great (and much more nutritious) alternative to good old orange juice and are a great tummy-filler when you’re feeling a bit peckish! Ingredients 1/2 cup blueberries. Frozen is often best as they are snap-frozen, ensuring the vitamins and minerals are locked in rather than losing their nutritional quality on the shelf or in the fridge. Add strawberries and raspberries for another flavour. 1 cup skim milk 2 tablespoons frozen yoghurt 1 tablespoon honey Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth, and enjoy!

Honeymoon Too many people don’t give themselves enough time to completely enjoy their honeymoon. After the rush of emotions and stressors involved with planning your wedding, you’ll both need a long honeymoon to help you relax and settle into your marriage before returning to the real world. Honeymoons can range from exotic trips to long, scenic road trips, and whichever you choose, the main thing to remember is that you only have one true honeymoon. Ask as many friends and family members why they enjoyed their honeymoon, and ask for advice on what to and what not to do to ensure the honeymoon of your dreams. Keep in mind that most overseas destinations have different climates to Australia, so be sure to select a destination which complements the time of year you are travelling; do your homework first. If you’re not utilising the services of a travel consultant, make sure you Google your honeymoon destinations’ best time of the year to visit. Plan and book flights in advance, as booking flights at the last minute are a recipe for disaster and disappointment, not to mention a less healthy bank balance!

Jewellery Accessories Selecting the rings that will adorn your hands for the rest of your lives is a hugely important task, and one that should not be made overnight. When shopping for your wedding rings, it’s easy to be swept away by heightened emotions, idealized examples from movies, and marketing of the diamond industry. Under such pressures, you might end up with wedding rings that aren’t right for you. Before you go shopping, read our tips on how to buy a wedding ring that fits your budget, style, and taste. Also take into consideration the accessories you will wear to complete your look. The right wedding accessories will create a ‘finished’ look. The key is finding a balance between how much is enough and how much is too much. As Coco Chanel once said “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.” She was right. Us women tend to overdo it, which consequently detracts from the overall look rather than elegantly enhancing it.

79 | THE Bridal BIBLE

You should be the show-stopper, so aim for wedding accessories that complement what you’re wearing rather than taking over your entire look.

Create a gorgeous Birdcage Veil in under 10 minutes! All you’ll need is: 1/2 a metre of Russian Netting A glue gun Two hairpins Two silk flowers, or embellishments of your choice

2 Start by measuring a comfortable distance around your eyes and forehead to the centre of your head, and cut to the measurement.

Use a hot glue gun to glue the folds together. Glue a line straight down a hair-coloured bobby pin and attach to the inner side of the veil (the side where the veil is curving away from you.)

Gather each side, making sure you begin by folding the outer edges in first- this will give the veil a rounder effect and will be more comfortable to wear. Allow around an inch for the netting to be gathered together

Attach a silk flower or embellishment of your choice. Other popular choices are feathers and lace. Repeat with the other side, being sure to glue the hairpin and flower to the correct side.

Belle of the Beach Try this for a cute alternative to going barefoot for your beach ceremony! You’ll need: Thongs Ribbon Hot glue gun Embellishments of your choice

Cut a 30cm length of ribbon and begin wrapping the ribbon around the base of the straps, adding a line of glue to secure

Cut any excess ribbon and glue the underside of the strap, so the glue won’t rub on your feet

Continue wrapping the ribbon around the strap until you reach the end

Repeat the process with the other side, and add embellishments such as lines of pearls, ribbons and diamantes

Limousines Transport Rocking up in Nana’s old Datsun not what you had in mind for your grand entrance? Didn’t think so. Selecting the right ride for your big day isn’t the biggest decision you’ll be making, but it is important to get it right. Lots of photos will centre around the limousine or car you arrive and leave the ceremony in, so you want to ensure that it is well looked-after and reliable, and suits the theme of your wedding well. Another factor to consider is how many people need to be transported and what time of the year you’re getting married (remember, it often rains a lot at the beginning of Spring and you don’t want to arrive drenched and frozen in a convertible, trendy or not!), and ensure that older vehicles are inspected before booking for piece of mind that your transport is mechanically and aesthetically sound.

Photographers Videographers The images you have to reflect back on in years to come are among the only things you’ll have to remind you of your beautiful wedding once it ends so ensuring you select a professional, reliable and talented photographer is an absolute must. Finding a photographer with a style you like is the first step, then deciding on the level of service you require, so you know where to start budgeting. Similarly, videographers have different styles and wedding videos are fast becoming a popular choice for the bride and groom who really doesn’t want to miss a thing. Whilst not a necessity, a wedding video is an amazing memento to have to look back on and remember your special day by, if done properly. With both photographers & videographers, do your homework and ask for references- these are the proof that your treasured memories will be in safe hands.

Pre-Wedding Parties From the Engagement Party to the Bridal Shower, the Bachelor and Bachelorettes Nights to the Rehearsal Dinner, the moment you are engaged it becomes one huge celebration! The Engagement Party is traditionally hosted by the Brides’ Parents however almost anything goes nowadays, so it is a good idea to factor the cost of this into your budget. The Bridal Shower is usually hosted by the by the maid/ matron of honour around 4 weeks before the wedding and is a great way to catch up with many of your female guests before the Big Day. Bachelor and Bachelorettes Nights are renowned for being a couple’s last night of craziness before they settle down into married life, so go all out and have a night to remember. Gone are the days of wild, drunken nights (for the ladies, anyway), and now more sophisticated, intimate gatherings are popular, with the night usually a good few weeks before the wedding to avoid any residual mishaps from the night before on the day of the wedding. Hosted by the parents of the Groom, the Rehearsal Dinner is usually an intimate dinner with your family and closest friends straight after the wedding rehearsal, however many couples are opting for a ‘Thank You Lunch’ on their return from their honeymoon so they can finalise last minute plans and relax in the last moments before the wedding.

Just type in ‘Iron on diamante’ for a great range of different versions. 1.5 metres of 7cm thick ribbon per sash- around $3 per metre at fabric stores An iron Measuring tape Needle and thread (same colour as ribbon) 1

Measure a reasonable distance around your torso (as if wrapping a sash around your body) and cut a 45° angle.

Singe the edge to prevent fraying, being sure to follow the edge closely and keeping the flame far enough away from the fabric to avoid a wobbly edge.

Remove the white backing and place the clear label over the fabric. Take your time placing the motif as once it’s stuck on, it can be difficult to move.

Hold an iron down for approximately 30 seconds on the opposite side of the fabric, turning the steam of the iron off. If you are working on a t-shirt or bikini, turn the garment inside out.

Once the fabric has cooled for a few moments, gently peel off the clear transfer paper. Turn the garment around and iron again to ensure all diamantes have stuck.

Wrap the sash around yourself and hold where the sash ends should meet, placing a few stitches to secure. There you have it! A gorgeous, personalised sash/t-shirt/bikini you’ll be proud to show off!

Venues Venues tend to book out very quickly so selecting a venue that suits the style of your wedding and your budget should be at the top of your list of ‘Things To Do’. There are many considerations to be made when deciding on your venue- if you are having a garden wedding, ensure you speak to venue staff about how the gardens will look on your selected dates, however if you are having a wedding where there may be limited parking, ensure your guests are aware so that alternative arrangements can be made if required. The ceremony venue should be one you feel ‘connected’ with, as this is the location where the most beautiful part of your wedding will take place, so the surroundings are important. South Australia boasts many beautiful locations for weddings, from the hills to the Barossa, the city to the sea, so taking into account what time of year your wedding will take place is of utmost importance. When selecting the reception venue you will need to take into account the facilities available; if your chosen destination is far from home, it might be wise to find a venue with accommodation also. Most venues provide their own catering too, so make sure you sample their menu beforehand also.
