Langdon-Munich completes unbeaten 13-0 season with 4th state football title

By Jake Kulland, Sports Editor The Langdon-Munich football team began their 2025 season not ranked number one in the state, as they were picked second after defending Division A Champion Velva-Garrison-Drake-Anamoose. They quickly showed what was to come for the fall, with two convincing non-conference wins over Oakes and Valley City. From there, the Cards blew through their Region 2A schedule then reached the Dakota Bowl for the first time since 2020, beating Northern Cass, Hillsboro-Central Valley, and big bad Velva-G-D-A in the postseason process.

That put the Cardinals in Dakota Bowl XXXIII, held at the Fargodome on Nov. 14, where they played a good Bottineau team and won 2914 to win their fourth state football championship. Christie and Kade Hansen. That's something not a lot of players can say.

This title goes with Cardinals championships from 2018-2020. They also went undefeated on the season with a record of 13-0 and beat every team they played by double digits.

The postseason individual accolades are just as impressive as the team winning it all -- Johnson, Romfo, Davis, and Landon Schneider got All-State honors, while all those four plus Eastyn Schaefer and Keaton Ullyott were

on the All-Region 2A first team. Tanner McDonald, Travis Hakanson, Maddux Stremick and Dawson Downs all were All Region 2A honorable mention.

Josh Krivarchka, who just completed his 14th season as head coach, had this to say about his team winning it all for the fourth time, "Overall it was a great year for Cardinal football that was capped off with our fourth championship in program history. Football cont’d. on page B2

Drama club to compete in state competition

By Hilary Nowatzki The Langdon Area School Drama Club is celebrating a win after competing in their regional competition last week.

Now, they are preparing to perform at the state competition and couldn’t be more excited.

Before finding out that they had won the regional competition, the Cardinal drama team faced a bit of a surprise.

When the awards ceremony started, nobody from Langdon was called up for the “honorable mention” prizes,

which seemed odd for a team with such a pristine record in these competitions.

“There’s two types of awards given out. One is called an honorable men-

tion, and those are given out to anybody they thought did a great job that needs to be mentioned,” explained Kim Hart, who leads the drama team along with Emily Braunberger. “We cont’d. on page A6

Samuelson has served as a staff attorney for the Northeast Judicial District since 2017, assisting district judges with civil and felony-level trials and drafting and editing court orders.

She served as a special assistant attorney general for the Devils Lake Regional Child Support Unit from 2011 to 2017, representing North Dakota in state and tribal court matters involving paternity and child support.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – On Nov. 12, North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) donated $500,000 to the Great Plains Food Bank (GPFB), a leading hunger-relief organization and the state’s only food bank. The sizeable contribution is dedicated to the relief agency’s Harvesting Hope Campaign, which is focused on building a new statewide distribution center to expand food access across the state.

“We are fortunate to be able to make

this donation, which comes from the strength of our grassroots organization and our members – the hundreds of family farmers and ranchers who put food on our tables every day,” said North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne.

Farmers Union is a longtime partner of Great Plains Food Bank, recently donating 35,000 pounds of pork in September. NDFU is the state’s largest general farm organization, head-

quartered in Jamestown.

GPFB is a member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks working to end hunger across the nation. It works with a wide array of individuals and organizations to guide donated surplus food and grocery products to a network of food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and charitable feeding programs.

Raised in Edmore, Samuelson earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and her law degree from the UND School of Law in 2007. She currently serves as the Northeast Judicial District’s regional representative to the State Bar Association of North Dakota and as vice president of the Lake Region Bar Association. She is certified in adult mental health first aid and previously served as an emergency medical technician (EMT) for the Edmore Volunteer Ambulance Service.

The Northeast Judicial District judgeship vacancy was created by the retirement of Judge Donovan Foughty on Sept. 30. Foughty had served the district since 1995. Three attorneys were named as finalists for the judgeship, which is chambered in Devils Lake.

The Northeast Judicial District includes 11 counties: Benson, Bottineau, Cavalier, McHenry, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Renville, Rolette, Towner and Walsh.

The 4-H Crystal Clovers spent their November club meeting making shelf-stable cake kits for the Pembina County Emergency Food Pantry. The kit included a box of cake mix, frosting, a can of ginger ale, and candles in a disposable baking pan. They made 25 kits. These kits are a great option for birthdays or celebrations.

Their club had a lot of fun making the kits. They set up stations to assemble the kits, add the instructions, and put ribbon on the baking pan.

Their next club meeting is Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Cavalier Evangelical Free Church.

NDSU Extension to host virtual income tax management program for ag producers North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension will offer a tax management program to agricultural producers and tax preparers from 1 to 4 p.m. CST on Monday, Dec. 1, via Zoom.

Vaden: Beijing expected to honor the deal – The clock is ticking for China to purchase 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans before the end of the year. Deputy Agriculture Secretary Stephen Vaden told the Red River Farm Network he expects Beijing to honor the deal. “I’m confident the Chinese understand Joe Biden is no longer in the White House; that means if they don’t live up to their arrangements, Donald Trump will do something,” said Vaden. “If there’s one thing I have complete confidence in, it’s that anyone who crosses an agreement made by President Trump—it does not end well for them.”

Hoeven: Ag spending bill plays role in ending shutdown – According to North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, the agriculture appropriations bill was a key piece in reopening the federal government and represents a major win for rural America. “We added our ag appropriations bill, which passed the floor with more than 80 votes. That helped bring some of the practical Democrats to the table, people I’ve worked with for years. I’m very pleased that our ag appropriations bill was an important part of it,” he stated. As chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee, Hoeven led negotiations on the Fiscal Year 2026 agriculture funding bill.

The measure includes $2.5 million for NDSU’s Agricultural Risk Policy Center; $5 million for the AgTech Cooperative Agreement between Grand Farm, NDSU, and USDA’s Agricultural Research Service; and $3 million for renovations at the Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center in Fargo.

It also ensures access to Farm Service Agency loans, protects ranchers

from unfunded mandates under the new electronic ID tag rule, and provides $500,000 for blackbird control in the Northern Plains.

Farmers brace for higher costs – Production costs are climbing again as farmers prepare for the 2026 crop year. North Dakota State University Extension Ag Finance Specialist Bryon Parman said fertilizer, seed, and chemical prices are all trending higher, tightening margins for growers. “Some of it’s right at the rate of inflation, but incomes aren’t necessarily expected to go up at the same rate. Fertilizer can make up as much as 25% of corn production costs and up to 30% for canola. Even herbicides and overhead are rising. It’s looking like everything will be more costly across the board, and there just isn’t a lot of margin there that we’re expecting to be able to absorb.” Unless input costs ease or commodity prices rise sharply, Parman said 2026 could be another year of narrow margins for U.S. farmers.

Farm bill extension ends shutdown, leaves issues unresolved – NDFB President Daryl Lies said the one-year farm bill extension was expected, but leaves important issues unresolved. “Without going big into that whole farm bill, there’s a lot of those regulatory relief things that we would like out there, and those things not being really addressed is part of the concern.” Lies wants Congress to return to regular order in the appropriations process. “More than just reopening the government again, we need to ask if we’re really doing things the way they’re supposed to be. If not, did we really achieve anything?”

The program will be moderated by Ron Haugen, NDSU Extension farm management specialist.

“This program provides an excellent opportunity for agricultural producers and tax preparers to learn and ask questions about tax management alternatives while there is still time to implement year-end tax management decisions,” said Haugen.

The program will feature presentations by Mercean Lam, Internal Revenue Service; Russ Tweiten, Ag Country Farm Credit Services; Rob Holcomb, University of Minnesota Extension and JC Hobbs, Oklahoma State University Extension.

The RF-DASH program will be offered in person on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Killdeer Saddle Club in Killdeer, N.D., and Thursday, Dec. 4, at Webster Farms near Penn, N.D.

While calf prices have fallen in fall 2025, calf prices are still historically high. With relatively low 2025 feed grain prices, growing calves past weaning can still make backgrounding economically feasible.

North Dakota State University Extension cattle specialists have provided a new series of backgrounding calf management videos. The series is found on the NDSU Extension website at ndsu.ag/backgrounding25.

Calf weaning in October was once common in N.D. Now, weaning occurs in November and December, with calves weaned in December, primarily due to their younger age.

Younger calves also mean lighter calves. Growing calves beyond wean-

ing, where calves are fed a ration instead of grazing, is called backgrounding. The extended feeding period after weaning allows calves to acclimate to health and vaccinations, creates a transition to different feed rations and causes a delay in marketing.

Bryon Parman, NDSU Extension agricultural finance specialist, said producers feeding calves to a heavier weight should consider a budget for the outcome.

“Feed costs are only part of the consideration, since the price of weaned calves and backgrounded calves is extremely important,” said Parman.

“In North Dakota, we have a fantastic network of Extension agents, rural firefighters, ambulance squads and county emergency managers,” said Angie Johnson, NDSU Extension farm and ranch safety specialist. “These professionals are community members and trusted sources of information that farmers, ranchers and their families listen to when it comes to addressing hazards regarding health and safety on their farm operation.”

RF-DASH training opportunities are open to firefighters, county emergency managers, EMS personnel, law enforcement, safety professionals, Extension agents, technical college instructors, rural insurance agents, farmers, ranchers and other rural community members interested in preventing agricultural injuries and fatalities.

RF-DASH allows these trusted community partners to become leaders in farm and ranch safety prevention education and provide outreach opportunities to their local farmers and ranchers.

The event is free; however, registration is required by Nov. 25. Register at ndsu.ag/safety-killdeer for the Killdeer training and ndsu.ag/safety-penn for the Penn training.

“I had to change my mindset to identify the potential safety hazards on the farm that could possibly end up bringing me here as a firefighter in an emergency response situation,” said Woodhouse. “Instead of focusing on what the rescue process would look like, RF-DASH takes it a step further and asks, ‘How do we prevent this from becoming a rescue situation in the first place?’”

Tim Zehnder, RF-DASH lead trainer, says RF-DASH aims to leverage the bonds between rural fire departments, farmers/ranchers and agricultural community members to reduce rates of agricultural injury and property loss in rural communities.

“Thanks to grant support from the

CHS Foundation, we are able to train new leaders in North Dakota and work on getting our first cohort of trainers established in the state — an identified need that North Dakota firefighters and Extension professionals expressed to us,” said Zehnder.

Co-leaders for the December RFDASH trainings are NDSU Extension agents Kirsten Kukla, Lindsay Overmyer and Hayden Anderson, North Dakota county emergency managers Sarah Duttenhefner and Chris Jaeger, and firefighter Lee Gessner.

Letter from the Publisher: Both Langdon Area Schools and North Border School have had a very busy and successful couple of weeks!

With students participating in drama, cheer, football and volleyball, students and coaches have been staying busy, not to mention the parents traveling the state to watch their own kid as well as others do their best in their chosen competition. Job well done to all; great memories were made!

As of this minute, we are still snow

free. Not so great for the sled salespeople I suppose, but we can’t all be happy. A few days of sunshine has cheered up a lot of faces and gotten folks outside for some fresh air. Maybe you hung your Christmas lights or dressed your dog up like a reindeer?

Neither of those things have happened at the Simmons residence, but my hopes are high. Not that we have a dog, we don’t, but the light situation could happen any minute.

Our plans for Thanksgiving are still just in our imaginations, because we don’t have firm plans yet! We may grill a burger on the Blackstone and call it good or just eat pie all day. More than Thanksgiving dinner, I want Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. Could that be arranged? I’ll contact DoorDash about that and get back to you.

This week we celebrated the 16th birthday of the girl that made me a grandmother. Remmi is a kind, smart

gal who doesn’t cut up near as much as her mother did at that age. Is that fair? No. It’s ok, though, there’s another one coming up that will get the job done.

All that’s missing from the tree is the angel, or topper, whatever you call it.

Sometimes it’s a star, sometimes an angel, but in our case, it’s going to be a massive picture of Bob Simmons’ face. Sue didn’t have time to get it photoshopped by the time this issue went to the printers, so I’ll be sure to update you with a picture once the tree is truly completed.

Can you believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner? Where has the time gone? Winter has certainly made its arrival, but it hasn’t been nearly as brutal as years past.

With the chilly weather comes the holiday season, as evidenced by the five foot Christmas tree Rebecca brought into the office on Monday morning. It’s beautifully decorated with stockings for each of us at the Langdon office. How sweet is that?

I also officially got my Christmas shopping underway at last weekend’s vendor show, hosted at the American Legion in Langdon. Not only did I get to shop for locally made and crafted goodies, I also set up a booth with Hilary Does Art and had a wonderful day! There were so many offerings at the show, and it was well attended.

So, what are your Thanksgiving plans?

For me, my family from Tennessee is coming up to visit, and I’m so excited to see them. It took quite a bit of convincing to get my mom to visit in

what’s considered “winter,” but with just a little begging, she and my stepdad, Joel, said they would come stay with us for a week. Yay! I can’t wait to see if Mom overpacked, preparing for the chilly temps they are not used to at all. They are lucky, though; it could be a whole lot worse this time of year!

This trip will be more relaxed than

the last time they visited Langdon, which was my wedding, and certainly a hectic time. This visit, I’ll actually get to spend some quality time with them and show them around town. So, if you hear someone that sounds like if

sweet tea could talk, that’s my mom.

The Morning Stroll and Cuppa Joe: The adventures of Uncle Russ and Andy

Hunting season always makes me think of the avid hunters we have in our family. On Greg’s side of the family, it would be his cousins on his dad’s side, the Eaglesons. They have scouted and hunted on our farm for many years despite all of them living several hours away in the big cities of Bismarck, Fargo and Rugby. Typically, when the Eagleson clan gets together to hunt, there are several generations involved. It would not be unusual to see an orange-clad teen trudging through the trees in the snowy footsteps made by his grandpa. When the three brothers - Chad, Sean and Jace - are together, you are guaranteed lots of laughs, lots of stories and a few skinned deer carcasses hanging in the shop by the end of the weekend.

In my family, the first person that comes to mind as an avid hunter is my Uncle Russ. Uncle Russ is my dad’s younger brother, and other than being of similar height and stature, they could not be more different. While my dad is an introverted, quiet listener, Uncle Russ is an extroverted, animated story-

teller. Uncle Russ’s hunting resume is quite impressive and extensive. If you visit his hunting cabin at Fort Ransom, appropriately named Rooster Ridge, you will see his display of skins of nearly every fur-bearing animal in North America along with a pronghorn antelope, a gemsbok on a pedestal, a double-shoveled Caribou bull, an Arctic grayling fish and a pair of dark, iridescent pheasants lovingly displayed above the kitchen cabinets.

Even more extraordinary is his display of animals from his hunting trip to the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

This assortment of preserved animal heads and antlers includes a kudu, zebra, gemsbok, waterbuck, blesbuck, impala, duiker, and the shining star and my aunt’s favorite (according to Uncle Russ) - a warthog.

On Thanksgiving weekend in November of 1995, Uncle Russ’s hunting prowess was put to the test when he and my brother, Andy, had a little hunting adventure out in Watford City. In 1995 my brother was a buck-toothed, bespectacled, skinny kid of 14 with a buck bow tag when Uncle Russ was nominated and willingly agreed to accompany him on a hunt. Despite the cold, the snow and the impending forecast calling for blizzard-like conditions, Andy and Uncle Russ set out for the neighbor’s place about a mile east of my parent’s farm. The neighbor had a pile of bales that had attracted several deer to his yard, and he was more than willing to have my brother get rid of one.

As luck would have it, Andy managed to put an arrow in a young little buck

without much trouble. However, instead of going down, the buck took off. Uncle Russ and Andy went after it even though the sun was going down fast and the wind was picking up even faster.

With the age of portable cell phones still many years away, the guys took off with what they thought were the necessary supplies - a flashlight to see, a knife to gut and skin, a length of rope to haul out the eventual dead deer, and Andy’s bow and arrows to finish him off. Unfortunately, every time they got close to the little buck, it took off. The guys kept after it. Uncle Russ was worried that if they left him until the next day, they wouldn’t find him as it was starting to snow and blow hard. By then it was completely dark out, and they weren’t sure where they were since it was hard to see any yard lights through the blowing snow. Still, they kept after the elusive little buck.

Back at the house, the rest of the family was in panic mode. Uncle Russ and Andy had been gone for hours, and now it was dark and storming.

We called the neighbor whose yard they had started the hunt in, but he had not seen them in quite a while.

We debated what to do, not knowing for sure where they were. The neighbor said he would jump in his pickup and go out toward where he last saw them. We had no choice but to wait and pray that we would soon see headlights pull into the yard.

In the meantime, Uncle Russ and Andy had finally caught up to the wounded and exhausted deer. Uncle Russ had a brilliant plan to try and rope the deer around the neck so that Andy could finish him off with an arrow. Uncle Russ managed to get the rope around the deer but then handed the rope to Andy, grabbed his hunting knife and, as Andy described it, Uncle Russ “bulldogged” the deer and finished him off. Forty…with a bang

By Matt Mitzel As this community switches from football to volleyball state competitions, this past weekend - the same one in which the Langdon Area Munich Cardinals brought home the state championship in football - a group of people loaded up on a train and headed to the land of the Vi-

kings to celebrate Jason Wirth’s 40th birthday. It started with just a conversation that Kim and Jason would be going to Vikings vs. Bears to celebrate a low key 40th birthday event. I happened to overhear it and decided to grab some other football enthusiasts, and we thought we would surprise him. We loaded onto the train in Devils Lake at 3:00 AM and arrived in St. Paul at 10:00 AM. The cast of characters were Kim and Jason Wirth, Bri and I, Justina Klindt and Adam Wirth, and Derick and Greta Samuelson.

With an assembly of such a crew, we knew that it was going to hurt and be awesome at the same time.

Upon our arrival, we immediately hit an extremely hard escape room. It didn’t really help that Greta is scared of everything that doesn’t have four legs on it, so she was pretty much there for moral support. Bri, Kim and

Adam were the ones that were rifling through the clues. Jason and Derick tried every method to cheat and pick open locks that we did not yet find the keys for, and I tagged each corner of the room with “Sara Sucks” as I do every place I visit. In the end, we solved it with 20 minutes to spare.

From there it was a collage of hopping around the bars and grills downtown until Justina stepped forward with an idea…”Why don’t we go to a drag show?” The idea was met with an explosion of joy, as that is something we don’t have around Munich, so why wouldn’t we immerse ourselves in an underground culture for some memories? As we loaded two Ubers full of chipper Munichers, the driver said, “So you are leaving downtown Minneapolis with the best shows and entertainment to go into the salty

party of St. Paul to catch a sketchy drag show?” We enthusiastically said “Oh, boy.” Upon arrival, we realized we were not in Kansas anymore but couldn’t wait to see what it entailed.

The performers were adamant to take pictures and share with the world, so that’s why I thought I’d show The Borderland Press followers how to step out of your comfort zone. The show started, and “oh, boy” did it ever. I will not wreck the experience for you, so I implore you to go to one yourself to see it with your own eyes. By time it ended, we gathered Derick from being balled up in the corner rocking and repeating “I miss my cows,” gave a respectful round of applause, and just realized we now entered into a new chapter of life. Adam ran for the door in the likes of when he played baseball in high school, and Jason and Justina got as many autographs

as they could muster.

The following day, after our Bloody Mary breakfast, we attended the game in which the Vikings let us down again. Instead of being salty, we were just excited to cram every experience of big city life into two days. Jason realized being 40 did not feel so good and absentmindedly remembered that he challenged his wife to a foot race on Main Street in Munich on the 28th of November at 5:00 pm. We encourage everyone that is around the area to come and watch. You will witness that when you get to 40 years old, you don’t mutter under your breath “she might be younger than me, but I’m still faster than my wife” - it has consequences when she overhears it… If you don’t know Kimberly Wirth, she is the ultimate competitor.

Pembilier Nursing Center: Student council helps decorate trees

up the plethora of Christmas trees that usually adorn the rooms of PNC every Christmas season. This is the third year that the student council from North Border School in Walhalla came to our aid and not only put up the trees but decorate them as well.

We even had a group that put up our extensive Christmas village that adorns our beautiful “green” room.

In what used to take us days to do, is now done in under two hours!

Greetings from your friends at PNC! It’s crazy to think but the holiday season is upon us. Halloween has come and gone, and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. That means Christmas is quickly approaching, and before we know it, it will be 2026!

Thank you is not enough, so we did provide them with delicious pizza for lunch… Anyways, we are so very grateful for their willingness to help us decorate for our residents. Special thanks to Mrs. Cori Hartje for being so willing to bring this wonderful group of kids to PNC.

Contest open for grade students Benefit for Lue Myers Lue Myers is, according to her friends and family, “an integral part of our community and our cafe.” The community they are referring to is Hampden, and the cafe they mentioned is the Hampden Cafe.

Sadly, Myers has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and her loved ones are helping support her with her medical expenses with a soup and sandwich meal and silent auction to take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Hampden Cafe on Nov. 25.

A challenging new statewide contest for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in all schools is now open. How many words can you make out of the words THANKSGIVING DAY? You can only use the letters in the words without adding any extras.

Newspapers hosting high school students for the equivalent of four weeks of full-time work and college students working the equivalent of eight weeks of work, receive stipends to help pay for the student’s time on the job.

On the back of each entry write your first and last name, full address, school name and grade so that we will know where to send the prizes.

Their commentary isn’t provided to strengthen schools or help kids succeed. Instead, it creates doubt and division and erodes trust in our own neighborhood schools.

Since 1921, during the week before Thanksgiving, Americans have celebrated American Education Week, a time for us to appreciate public schools and advocate for the tens of thousands of kids of all backgrounds and abilities who attend the 170 public school districts across our state.

North Dakotans for Public Schools is a coalition of regular, everyday people who value public education, not just this week but year-round, because we know that great public schools don’t happen by accident; they require resources, commitment, and hard work. That takes all of us – parents, educators, citizens, and elected officials – working together to make them strong and successful for our kids.

didn’t get any of them, and there’s quite a few given out, and we were feeling a little nervous about that.”

The team wondered if something was wrong, then the judges announced the bigger prizes called “superior actor awards.”

“Those are generally reserved for the lead roles,” Hart shared.

As it would turn out, the very last award actually went to the entire Langdon cast, something that is unheard of at these competitions.

“They gave our entire cast a superior award, which really just shocked and thrilled us. We didn’t know that was a thing…we were really honored by that,” Hart explained.

“After we performed at regionals, we met with the judges, and the first judge told us that one of the scenes within our performance was ‘the best thing she had seen all day,’” recounted Braunberger. “That was a very high compliment, considering the great talent coming from the other schools.”

This meant Langdon was not only recognized for their team's individual talent, but they had won the regional competition… again! The Cardinals won the regional competition when it was hosted last year and also proceeded on to state last year as well.

Greg Scurria, for the community on Nov. 23 at 1 pm at the Langdon High School gymnasium. Tickets will be $5 each.

The one-act-play features Michael St. John, who has passed away and is now in the afterlife. Audiences will see four important scenes from Michael’s life.

“He gets a chance to examine his life, and possibly, if he learns his lessons, get a redo,” Hart explained. According to Hart, the play is “funny but it’s also extraordinarily serious.”

Due to the sensitive nature of some of these extraordinarily serious scenes, Hart discourages parents from bringing along young children. She said that there is a parental advisory on the play, and that it is up to parents’ discretion if it is suitable for their children to attend. The show touches on topics such as domestic abuse and death.

“We do touch on serious subject matters, so we do not recommend for the public to bring kids,” Hart said.

After they finish the show, the team will load the bus for State. Their fam-

ilies and friends will give them a special send-off, akin to a parade around town.

The route will start at Langdon Area High School at approximately 3:30 p.m. and will head south down 7th Street, turn east on Highway 5, turn south on 3rd Street (to see downtown businesses), turn east on 7th Avenue S., turn south on Highway 1, then leave town for the state competition in Jamestown!

“We would love to see the community come out and give these students the recognition and accolades they deserve for making it to the State Competition two years in a row,” included Braunberger.

Hart and Braunberger both encourage community members to come out during the send off. If anyone would like to attend the play in Jamestown, the entry is free.

After the state competition, Braunberger and Hart hope to try for a four-act play or a musical in January to perform for the community. They promised to share the news with the school and families as soon as the dates are in the books.

Hart said she is very proud of the students’ dedication and says it’s the key to their success.

“They meet early in the morning, they meet late at night, they meet at lunchtime and run lines. They do things that are above and beyond to get the work done,” Hart stated.

“If it wasn't for their commitment to the program, we would not be able to do this at this level.”

Prairie Fare: How nutrition supports mental health

By Julie Garden-Robinson, NDSU Extension food and nutrition specialist Therefore, be mindful of services and hotlines in your area, and reach out for help when needed. Thankfully, the stigma surrounding mental illness is declining.

I am not a mental health counselor or therapist, so I’ll leave treatment to the experts. However, emerging research shows that our mental health is closely connected to our nutritional status. Nourishing our bodies goes far beyond supporting our heart, bones, muscles and skin — it also supports our brain and emotional well-being.

I usually begin my column with a story to make you smile or even chuckle.

This one is a little more serious, but I hope you find some helpful ideas.

Most of us know someone — a family member, friend or acquaintance — who has faced mental health challenges. Maybe you’ve experienced anxiety or depression yourself.

Lately, I’ve been reading about the increasing number of people dealing with mental illness. Sadly, suicide rates have risen, claiming the lives of more than 49,000 people in the U.S. in 2023.

About one in five adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness, which can affect people of any age. The highest risk is among those ages 18 to 25, followed by ages 26 to 29.

Neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) and hormones regulate our emotions and behaviors such as hunger. Three important neurotransmitters are serotonin (SERR-uh-TOE-nin), dopamine (DOH-puh-meen) and norepinephrine (NOR-ep-in-EFF-rin).

Serotonin helps regulate emotions, sleep patterns and appetite. You may notice appetite changes when you experience strong emotions. Interestingly, most of our serotonin is produced in the gut. Dopamine influences motor control and motivation.

It makes us feel good when we experience something enjoyable, such as eating a delicious meal. Norepinephrine helps regulate attention and alertness and plays a role in our “fight or flight” response.

These neurotransmitters are derived from the amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine, which come from the

protein we eat. Tryptophan is essential, meaning our bodies can’t make it — we must get it from food. When neurotransmitter or hormone levels become unbalanced, we can start to feel “off.”

As many of us have experienced, stress can cause us to feel “sick to our stomach” or describe something as “gut-wrenching.” This reflects the gutbrain axis, the connection between our digestive and nervous systems.

When stressed, we might experience stomach pain, a loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation.

You may have heard of the gut microbiome — the trillions of “good” bacteria and other microorganisms that help us digest food. We can nourish our microbiome by eating foods that feed these bacteria, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, yogurt and other cultured foods.

Here are a few nutrition-related steps that can support both body and mind: Eat a balanced diet. Include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy (or another calcium source) to feed all your body systems.

Get enough B vitamins (such as folate, thiamine and riboflavin), which support brain and nerve health. Eating fortified grain foods and cereals, milk, salmon, meats, eggs, leafy greens and beans will help you get your B vitamins.

Check your vitamin D. Eggs, fortified milk, some cereals, oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) and liver provide some vitamin D, but supplements may be needed if you get little sunlight during winter. Talk with your health care provider to learn more.

This recipe contains a variety of nutrients from the ingredients and probiotics from the yogurt. It’s one of my favorites.

Dill Pickle Pasta Salad 8 ounces dry whole-wheat shell pasta (about 3 cups) 3/4 cup sliced pickles 2/3 cup cheddar cheese, cubed 3 tablespoons white onion, finely diced (optional) 2 tablespoons fresh dill 1/2 cup pickle juice Dressing: 2/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste) 4 tablespoons pickle juice Salt and black pepper to taste Cook pasta according to the package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water. Toss pasta with ½ cup pickle

juice and set aside for 5 minutes. In a small bowl, combine all dressing ingredients and mix well. Drain pasta and discard any remaining pickle juice. Add pickles, cheese, onions

and dill to pasta. Top with dressing, and stir to combine. Chill for at least an hour before serving.

Each serving has 110 calories, 9 grams (g) fat, 3 g protein, 5 g carbohydrate, 0 g fiber and 150 milligrams sodium.

The USD School of Health Sciences Complementary and Alternative Medicine research team, in partnership with the South Dakota Human Services Center (HSC), has introduced virtual reality (VR) as a groundbreaking tool in inpatient mental health care.

of the study was its impact on engagement. Individuals who had previously disengaged from programming found joy and purpose in VR sessions. Notably, a typically reserved patient experienced emotional insight through immersive therapy, highlighting VR’s ability to foster self-awareness.

A pilot study, funded by the South Dakota Community Foundation, was implemented by the research team that reviewed the utilization of virtual reality as an additional tool for inpatient mental health care. Liminal VR software, designed to increase relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety, was selected and viewed through VR headsets for an immersive experience. The participants attended VR sessions three days per week over the course of four weeks. Baseline measurements related to stress, anxiety and mood were taken prior to starting the course and after finishing each day of VR sessions. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at the end of the four-week course. Data was also collected from staff who were involved with the participants.

Offering tailored experiences such as calm, awe, and relief, the technology empowered patients to select sessions best suited to their needs.

Community impact and future considerations The study bridged service gaps and sparked discussion on alternative mental health approaches. Observing patients eagerly anticipating their sessions reinforced the power of brief interventions in shaping mood. The study encouraged staff to value every patient interaction, however brief, as a meaningful step toward healing.

One of the most compelling aspects

With overwhelmingly positive feedback from both patients and staff, this initiative has demonstrated VR’s potential to enhance therapeutic outcomes—leading to improved mood and relaxation, and reduction in stress and anxiety.

The success of VR within HSC has inspired life skills staff to explore additional digital interventions, including YouTube-guided visual meditation.

Recognizing VR’s potential beyond inpatient care, the research team is considering student-focused mental health applications and seeking funding to expand services into health care and educational settings.

South Dakota’s rural landscape can limit access to traditional mental health services. VR can bridge this gap by providing accessible, personalized mental health support in various settings, reaching more South Dakota residents. Mental health challenges are a growing concern in South Dakota. According to NAMI, 112,000 adults in the state live with mental health conditions and 448,334 South Dakotans reside in communities lacking sufficient mental health professionals. With VR’s ability to deepen engagement and enhance therapy, could this technology alleviate provider workloads and shorten hospital stays? Additionally, the use of VR may prove beneficial in addressing substance use disorders, offering new

As mental health care evolves, integrating VR offers a path toward innovation, healing and accessibility— helping individuals not just manage their conditions, but actively reclaim joy in their daily lives.

To help the lilacs, all we can do at this point is rake and destroy the leaves as best we can. We can hope that next year will be drier, but that one’s out of our hands.

Trees and shrubs usually prepare themselves for winter just fine. They store up energy in late summer and fall, and gradually harden off for winter.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s been a gorgeous fall.

The trees put on a great color show and then dropped their leaves in showers of yellow, red, gold and orange.

Around here, they’re mostly yellow.

Some of the lilacs were a bit weird, though. They flowered or sent out some small leaves. It was just a few shrubs, but they shouldn’t be blooming in the fall.

This year’s wet weather created perfect conditions for a foliar fungus called Pseudocercospora. Lilacs around the state got hammered by this disease. The shrubs lost their leaves early and went into a dormant

If a tree loses bark all the way around its circumference, it’s as good as dead. I’ve lost a number of apple trees over the years, and I’ve begun to take some extreme measures.

Winter injury can have a number of causes and isn’t understood very well. Nevertheless, getting trees hydrated before winter is key to managing this issue.

Late-fall watering isn’t as critical for the deciduous trees as it is for the conifers.

Perhaps the most important winter prep I do relates to my archenemies: rabbits.

Rabbits – and voles – kill more trees each winter than cold temperatures do. The animals eat the bark off of younger trees, especially fruit trees, to get to the sugar-rich phloem tissue

of snow, those pests climb the drifts and girdle the branches. What took years to develop can be gone in one season.

It’s frustrating.

I’ve now taken to putting a wire fence around my apple trees. It’s a bit of a project to set this up, but the fence is really effective against rabbits … as long as there are no major snow drifts. And if I set up the fence far enough from the tree trunk, the deer will be held back, too.

I’ll do what I can and hope for the best. I can’t control nature. The best I can do is try to give it a little nudge.

From the Pastor’s Desk: Fall changes, but God doesn’t

By Robert Blackburn, United Methodist Church in Langdon instructions that God gave us to follow over 2,000 years ago still apply today. Isaiah 46:9-10 says, “Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.’”

As we are now in the fall season, it often brings change - change of routines as kids head back to school; change in the weather as the temperature cools down and the days get shorter. Everywhere you look, you can see the visible changes as nature prepares for winter. Birds are flying south, leaves are changing colors, and animals’ coats are thickening, but there’s one thing that never changes - God’s Word.

In a world with rapid change, instability, and uncertainty, it is a comforting truth that God never changes. Seasons may turn, people and systems fail, but the nature and character of God remain constant. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We serve a dependable God—unchanging in love, mercy, power, and promises.

God is unchanging in His existence.

Psalm 102:27 says, “But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.” All that He is today, He has always been and forever will be. He cannot change for the better, He cannot change for the worse. His power can never disappear, and His glory will never fade. The abilities that spoke everything into existence still exist today.

His Word is unchanging. Psalm 119:89 says, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” His Love is unchanging. John 13:1 says, “Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.”

God’s guidance never changes. The

God’s will never changes. Psalm 33:11 says, “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.” Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” God’s counsel never changes. His mercy is unchanging.

Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.”

Lamentations 3:22-24 says, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

We should find comfort in God’s unchanging nature, because chances are every created thing in this life will let you down. Whether it is circumstances, relationships, health, career, children, technology, etc., no matter the circumstances around us, God never changes.

As we go through this fall season, a season of changes, may we seek the Lord so that we may be secured to the One who will never change.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” – Isaiah 40:8.

He was born and raised in Sioux Falls, S.D., and worked in the food and restaurant industry for 25 years, mostly with Fryn’ Pan Restaurants, before entering the ministry field. Blackburn arrived in Langdon in July of 2021. He has been married for 25 years to Lea Robertson Blackburn of Hope, N.D., and has four children: James, Jessica, Makayla, and Thomas. He is currently enrolled in year four of a four-year degree of online courses through Oklahoma Wesleyan University in pursuit of a B.A. in Ministry and Leadership. len Mondor, 59, who was called from this life on November 8, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Appleton. Burial in the family plot will occur at a later time in the Saints Nereus and Achilleus Catholic Cemetery in Neche, N.D. Roger was born on May 8, 1966, in Cavalier, N.D., the son of Joseph George and Leona Lupien Mondor.

Roger grew up and attended school in the Langdon, N.D. area. In 1986 Roger moved to Benson, Minn. Roger served in the Minnesota National Guard. On July 30, 1988, Roger was united in marriage to Janil Nordby.

This union was blessed with two sons and one daughter. Roger enjoyed trips to the casino and camping. He loved hanging out with his friends and family.

Roger is survived by his children: Bo (Gisel) Mondor of Willmar, Krispassed away Nov. 11, 2025, at Osnabrock Community Living Center in Osnabrock, N.D.

She graduated from Alsen in 1960 and continued her education by studying nursing at Lake Region College in Devils Lake, N.D. On Nov. 28, 1964, Agnes was united in marriage to Daryle “Jim” Gellner. She spent many years working as a CNA and in the laundry department at Maple Manor Care Center. Agnes enjoyed spending time outside in her yard, planting flowers, and spent many hours knitting and crocheting through the winter months.

trees and beaver-dams flooded fields in the bottomlands. They demanded that lawmakers change beaver protection laws. And stockmen found windmill pumps to be more reliable than beaver-ponds, especially considering that cattle would sometimes drown amid beaver-dam debris.

Accordingly, on this date in 1916, the Bismarck Tribune reported on efforts to control the beaver population. The state Game and Fish Commission hired professional trappers to eradicate these so-called “evil varmints” along the Missouri Slope and allowed additional trappers to buy licenses to harvest beaver pelts.

Beavers are legendary for their work habits, the “busy beavers,” constantly felling trees, making beaver lodges, and beaver dams. They have to keep gnawing on tree-trunks to wear down their teeth; which never stop growing.

And so, the story of beavers went full circle, from abundance to near-extinction, followed by a revival that threatened farming and ranching. Today, beavers remain fair game in North Dakota for properly licensed hunters and trappers.

The pursuit of beaver furs led to a decimation of the beaver population in Dakota and elsewhere, bringing an end to the fur-trading era by the mid1800s.

Laws of Dakota Territory in 1887 prohibited killing or trapping beavers because cattle ranchers wanted beavers to make dams on streams as convenient watering places for cattle, saving stockmen the expense of build-

New flight to be offered at Grand Forks International Airport

The city of Grand Forks has announced that the Grand Forks International Airport will begin to offer a fourth daily flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul next year.

The flight will be offered through Delta Airlines and its regional partner, SkyWest. The additional connecting flight was one of the goals of Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski’s Air Service Task Force. Bochenski commented on the expansion of Grand Forks International’s offerings, saying it would help support local businesses and residents.

The new four-daily flight schedule is expected to begin on April 13, 2026.

Shutdown concludes after record-breaking 43 days

After 43 days, the US government shutdown has finally come to an end. Following the narrow win in the US House, President Trump signed the government funding bill late last Wednesday night.

Effective immediately, furloughed federal workers will be able to begin work, with many receiving backpay.

As for SNAP, while it is to be fully reinstated, at this time it's unknown how quickly SNAP recipients will once again receive food assistance.

While this passage of the bill funds the government for a few months, it’s expected to only be a few weeks before lawmakers once again debate over matters, with health care most certainly to be at the forefront.

The Mint first began printing the coin in 1793, but the coin’s usefulness has waned greatly for most consumers. Further, the cost to print pennies was more than the actual face value of the coin. In 2024, the US Mint spent over three cents to create every one-cent coin.

Despite this, in recent weeks some retailers and banks have been reporting penny shortages. This is especially troublesome for some states where it is illegal for retailers to round up to the nearest nickel or dime, causing impacted stores to have to round down.

With an end to the US penny, the government is expected to save $56 million annually.

A Lawton man accused of sexually assaulting a minor is now expected to change his plea. Thomas Paul Van Ness had a pretrial conference last Thursday.

Court documents allege that back in September 2024 when Van Ness was 29 years old, he provided a 17-yearold juvenile gummy marijuana edibles and alcohol then would perform a sexual act on the juvenile despite her telling him to stop.

Van Ness was arrested for the alleged crimes in July. He is accused of three Class C felonies and a Class A misdemeanor. His change of plea is scheduled for February 17.

On Monday, a Lankin man waived his preliminary rights in Northeast District Court and pled not guilty to a trio of criminal offenses. This past August, Cody John Thorsteinson, 31, was arrested after officers responded to a residence on a verbal domestic report.

Court records indicate Thorsteinson, who is a convicted felon, was in possession of three rifles and, when searched by police, had drug paraphernalia which tested positive for meth.

D’angelo James Hunt

D’angelo James Hunt, 26, of the Spirit Lake Nation has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of his brother, Isaac Hunt. Isaac was last seen alive in March 2024. Local and federal law enforcement agencies had attempted to locate Isaac on numerous occasions. This past Saturday, November 15, a break in the case happened when an organized search discovered human remains near the brothers’ father’s home.

According to the criminal complaint filed, the FBI recovered the remains, as well as clothing consistent with what Isaac was last seen wearing. Further, DNA evidence collected during earlier investigations and Facebook videos recorded shortly before Isaac’s disappearance led investigators to suspect D’angelo.

The charge against D’Angelo will still need to be tried in court. Due to both brothers being members of the Spirit Tribe, the case falls under federal jurisdiction. D’angelo is presently in custody in Grand Forks Correctional.

Records further allege Thorsteinson had attempted to resist arrest. Thorsteinson’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 23.

Oklahoma man arrested in Drayton

An Oklahoma man accused of selling methamphetamines in northeast North Dakota made his initial court appearance on Monday. In October, the Grand Forks Narcotics Task Force performed a drug investigation at the Motel 66 in Drayton. Through their investigations, a confidential informant was allegedly able to purchase over 29 grams of meth from Rory Land Hite, 37, from Spencer, Okla.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant in the motel room Hite was staying in on Oct. 24. Officers allegedly found more amounts of suspected meth, drug paraphernalia, and items such as a digital scale and baggies.

Hite faces two Class-B felonies for meth possession and delivery, as well as a Class-A misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia possession.

The Langdon-Munich Cardinals volleyball team came into the Region 2B championship match having split two matches this season with opponent Park River-Fordville-Lankin. In the third meeting, it would be the Lady Cards that not only would win by a sweep but it's how they did it that was jaw dropping, winning by set scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-13. The match was played at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Nov. 13.

With the win, the Lady Cards will now be making their state record 24th trip to the State B Volleyball Tournament.

They will also have an opportunity to defend their state title, which they won for the fifth time last year in Fargo. They will take a 36-5 record to the state tourney at the Bismarck Events Center, Nov. 20-22.

Three Cardinals players were named to the All-Region 2B team: Sophomore Kemi Morstad and freshmen Hilary Haaven and Mya Swanson. Swanson also had 16 service aces in the region tourney, which puts her over 100 on the season, a very rare statistic. Ava Peterson of New Rockford-Sheyenne was named Region 2B Senior Athlete of the Year and Nicole Wallangk of PRFL, Coach of the Year.

About his team making another run at state, Langdon-Munich head coach Rich Olson, in his 30th year of running the program, said, "This group has

stamp on things right away, jumping out to a 14-1 lead on a long serving run from Emma Hall. Aggressive serving was a key to the match all night, as the Cards had 11 service aces, and the ones that PRFL received, kept them on their heels the whole match.

Haaven led the team with 15 kills and 23 digs, Swanson had five aces, and Morstad 31 assists and three stuff blocks. Another key to the match was the Lady Cards stopping Aggies allstate middle hitter Lauren Bell, and they did just that, holding her to a season low five kills.

On winning the title, the seniors said it best. Starting with Class A Senior Athlete of the Year, Jax Johnson, "It feels so good to be a champion. It's a great way to end a senior year. It was awesome to play in the Fargodome; it was much louder in there than I thought it would be."

Theo Romfo gave his thoughts on winning a championship and his 67-yard touchdown catch in the big game, "It still seems so surreal to be a state champion, and it might always be. To

run a touchdown into the end zone in the Fargodome was something I'll never forget."

Keaton Ullyott, who had some big plays all postseason on defense and on the offensive line, said "It definitely feels great to win a state title. I felt we played physical on both sides of the line this year to give our team a chance to win.”

Tanner McDonald, who scored the first Cardinals touchdown in the title game to get the team going, may have said it best when he said, "I've dreamed about this moment for a long time. After going up short the last couple of years and now to finally get 'er done...it feels awesome!"

This group battled through the disappointment of getting close to winning titles the last two years but losing in state semifinal games. To have them continue to battle, work hard and get to the top of the mountain is something to be admired and something the 2025 Langdon-Munich Cardinals football team will always be remembered for - the drive and determination to become state champions, with some of the greatest athletes the program has ever produced, and to add another chapter to the Cardinals now storied football history. They are all, top to bottom, a fine group of young men that everyone in North Dakota and beyond can be very proud of.

Langdon-Munich win 4th state football title with wild win over Bottineau Three big offensive plays, one huge defensive goal line stand give the Cards first crown since 2020

In what was their seventh trip to the Dakota Bowl, the 2025 Langdon-Munich Cardinals football team was looking for their fourth state championship when they took on the Bottineau Braves at the Fargodome on Nov. 14.

After a wild first half, the Cards shut out the Braves after intermission, winning the game 29-14. Langdon-Munich finished their season with an unbeaten record of 13-0. Jax Johnson won the Division A Senior Athlete of the Year award, and Johnson, Theo Romfo and Landon Schneider made the All-State team.

The championship game against Bottineau took some work to get done and win a title. The Braves scored first, capping off a 10-play drive on a touchdown pass, to lead 7-0. To get even, the Cardinals took something out of the back of the playbook. They scored on a reverse pass from Eastyn Schaefer to Tanner McDonald from 48 yards out, as Langdon-Munich fooled the Braves on the play call. McDonald was wide open. He said about the play, "We had been working on that play for weeks in practice, waiting for the right time to use it, and it worked perfectly."

Still down 7-6 going into the second quarter, the Cardinals saw Bottineau score again on another long pass, stretching it out to a two-possession lead. The Cards again fought back, tying the game on a 67-yard catch and run by tight end Theo Romfo, who said, "I saw myself on the Jumbotron and saw that I had to kick it in gear to outrun the guys chasing me." Johnson ran in a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14. The Cards then took a 21-14 halftime lead with a 20-yard pass from Johnson to Schaefer with 90 seconds to go in the half. The Braves would miss a field goal just before the teams went to the locker room.

Two of the biggest spots in the game came in the fourth quarter. On a 4thand-16 play, Johnson threw a beautiful pass to Schaefer, who finished it with a great catch for a 32-yard TD. Maddux Stremick then caught a 2-point conversion to make the score 29-14. On the play touchdown pass, Johnson broke it down, "The play was intended to go out to Sam (Davis) out in the flat, but the pocket collapsed, so I got out of there, saw Schaefer open in the end zone, and threw it up to him."

On defense, the Cards had a big-time goal line stand, one that had several plays to it due to some penalties called. On the defensive stop, Cardinals coach Josh Krivarchka said, "It

takes drive and imposing a lot of will power against the other team to make something like that happen. Our interior defensive line of Landon Schneider, Devin Hakanson and Theo Romfo came up big for us on the stop."

Johnson had a double-double to end his high school football career, rushing for 101 yards on 30 carries while throwing for 175 yards on eight completions. Romfo had 85 yards receiving, followed by Schaefer with 61 and McDonald 56. Schaefer and TJ Henderson also had interceptions on defense. Dawson Downs had a sack to lead the team. For the Braves, quarterback Emerson Marum threw for 352 yards, while Landon Solberg caught eight passes for 155 yards on the day.

By Jake Kulland, Sports Editor Dakota Bowl XXXIII makes a ton of long lasting memories What a time it was getting the privilege to broadcast at the Fargodome once again for a part of Dakota Bowl XXXIII, which was held on Nov. 14. It was fantastic to witness the Langdon-Munich Cardinals football team win their fourth state football title in a very exciting fashion. The Cards fan section was full of people from all over - from Cavalier County and alumni from seemingly everywhere. It was also very cool to see not just the Cardinals but also Devils Lake and New Rockford-Sheyenne from our area win championships. Believe it or not, it was the first-ever title for Devils Lake in school history.

Several people got their first experi-

ence of the Dakota Bowl and the Fargodome, including Lovely Lisa, who was going to write a story about her time there, but it did not work out with our deadlines (she may have a story in this paper once in a while later on).

She thought the whole weekend was fantastic and couldn’t believe how big the dome is. We would both like to thank Carol Hart, Holly Lyons and PJ Rime for watching our dog, Bimbo (it truly takes a village!), and keeping him mostly accident free...well mostly.

We have a lot more to talk about in this space this week, so let’s get at it.

For North Border, making 9-man AllState are senior Brody Berg at first team linebacker and senior Gavin Symington and junior Kaden Moore on the All-State second team. Making the All-Region 2 9-man squad are the three mentioned plus seniors Colton Bailly and Kade Schafer on the first team and junior Zeke Symington and sophomore Oakley Brown on the second team. Berg also won Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year. We will have more on the All-State honors in next week’s paper, but congrats to all; they are very well deserved.

All-State, All-Region football teams announced; L-M, NB well represented Now that the high school football season has come to an end, postseason awards are being handed out. The Class A 11-man All-State and Region 2A All-Region teams have several Langdon-Munich Cardinals on it. First team Cardinals All-Staters are senior Jax Johnson at quarterback, senior Theo Romfo at defensive end, and junior Landon Schneider on the offensive line. All-Region 2A Cardinals players are the three mentioned on the first team along with senior Sam Davis, senior Keaton Ullyott, and sophomore Eastyn Schaefer. All-Region honorable mentions for the Cards were senior Tanner McDonald, juniors Devin Hakanson and Maddux Stremick, and sophomore Dawson Downs. Johnson was also named Class A and Region 2A Senior Athlete of the Year.

A long line of Romfo family football players comes to an end (for now) The state title won by Langdon-Munich brings a sort of bittersweet end to a name that will be attached to all four titles that the Cards have won, and that name is Romfo. From Grant and Simon to Jack, Mason and Theo, the Romfo moniker has been a significant part of area athletics, and especially the Cardinals football program, for nearly 10 years. Over that span, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been asked, “How many Romfos you got up there?” “There’s STILL some Romfos left?” and my personal favorite, “Are they all brothers?” (Believe it not, that’s the one I’ve been asked the most).

No, they aren’t all brothers. Of course, Simon and Grant are twins, and Jack and Theo are siblings. Their grandpas were all brothers - Neil, Armond

and Dean. They all have played together at some point in their athletic careers, something I know they all will remember forever, and they all have been a huge part of why there will now be four state championship banners that will hang in the Langdon and Munich gyms.

Now, Grant and Simon will be graduating from UND in the spring after both having fine college football careers. Jack just turned 21 and is at UND. Mason has a great hockey career at UMC-Crookston, and Theo is undecided what his future plans are at this point, and, of course, we will still see him on the baseball diamond in the spring and summer. It’s just crazy how time flies.

All five young men can say they have been state champions, whether it be in football, baseball or hockey, and I hope all five will remember forever the times they competed together and the excitement they brought to so many.

As we said in the topic for this segment of the column, there is another generation of Romfos (lots of them, actually) on the way, and if they can just give us a fraction of the good times we’ve had with the current group, many more good times are ahead. It will be different not saying the name Romfo on the radio or typing the name in the paper next fall, but the memories will remain.

Lady Cards heading to 24th State B Volleyball Tournament; girls basketball practice is underway, North Border not having a varsity team once again The good times just continue to roll for our area sports teams. The Langdon-Munich Cardinals have once again made it to the State B Volleyball Tournament, which is going on through Nov. 22 in Bismarck. This year the Lady Cards smoked every team they played at the Region 2B tournament, not coming close to losing a set the whole way. Hopefully, that will translate into a good run in the Capital City, as they try and defend last year’s state championship.

While state volleyball is rolling, girls basketball has gotten underway with practices that actually began on Nov. 10. Sadly, North Border is not having a varsity girls basketball program once again this year, but they do have three girls from Walhalla playing with Drayton-Valley-Edinburg and three from Pembina playing for Cavalier.

Langdon-Munich is ranked ninth in the preseason GBB Miss Hoopster poll, and they are coached once again

by Rob Scherr and assisted by Morgan Titus Mikkelsen. The Lady Cards first basketball game is at home on Dec. 5 versus Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier.

Pembina County North wrestling starts preseason with scrimmage in Grand Forks

By Jake Kulland, Sports Editor North Border-Walhalla senior Marlie Stremick recently signed with the University of Jamestown to get on the mat for women's college wrestling, next year. She is the first North Border student athlete ever to compete at that level in the history of the program and of the school.

Pembina County North head girls wrestling coach Crag Brodeur said of the signing, "Huge congratulations to Marlie Stremick signing on to wrestle at the University of Jamestown under coach Tony DeAnda. Marlie has been a staple of Grizzlies girls wrestling since she was a seventh grader.

As one of the captains of our program, she is a hard worker who puts in consistent effort towards her goals. She will be the first in our girls program to advance on to a college program. Marlie is paving the way for her teammates and setting an example of how hard work can pay off. Best of luck to her as she starts off her senior season at home against Fargo and Carrington on Nov. 25 in Walhalla."

Cavalier County Commission Proceedings On November 4, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. the Board of Commissioners of Cavalier County, North Dakota, met at the Cavalier County Courthouse in regular session, with all members present. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. Chairman Nick Moser called the meeting to order and proceeded as follows: Moser asked if there were any changes to the agenda. Shane Gallagher made a motion to approve the agenda as presented, seconded by Stanley Dick; motion carried. Greg Goodman made a motion to approve the minutes, seconded by Austin Lafrenz; motion carried. The NDACo conference was discussed. The commissioners decided to request a recommendation from the county’s IT regarding employee use of AI, training on it, as well as the need for policy updates. The Load Pass program for closing county roads was also discussed. Stanley Dick stated he will line up a presentation from Load Pass. Weston Mueller discussed excess water along the cemetery and county road in the SW ¼ of Section 32 in Seivert Township.

Terry Johnston stated that he did an inspection and did not feel the road was soft from the excess water, and stated he received the same opinion from the Ramsey County Highway Superintendent. Stanley Dick expressed his concern about the cemetery maintenance with the high water and cattails growing right up to the cemetery fence. Shane Gallagher made a motion to allow Mueller to reduce the ditch plug two (2) feet to protect the cemetery from the high-water table, seconded by Greg Goodman, motion

carried. The commissioners requested that Terry Johnston and/or Sheldon Romfo witness the work done by Mueller. Jeff Daley, KLJ, met with the commissioners with updates on the current road projects. Terry Johnston presented a ND DOT Maintenance Certification to the commissioners for approval. Stanley Dick made a motion to approve the ND DOT Maintenance Certification, seconded by Shane Gallagher, motion carried.

Johnston informed the commissioners that there was a rusted-out culvert between Sections 17 and 20 on County 12 in Minto Township. It was decided to fill the hole with rock and wait until spring to determine how many culverts need to be replaced.

Austin Lafrenz temporarily stepped out of the meeting to attend another meeting. Sheldon Romfo, Road Foreman, met with the commissioners to discuss the county paying for Class B driver’s license training for three (3) of the road operators. The commissioners confirmed that the county will pay the cost of the training. The road conference in Grand Forks was discussed. The commissioners encouraged Romfo to attend with one (1) or two (2) of the road operators.

The updated vehicle/machinery inventory was reviewed. There was discussion on the timeline for purchasing the next motor grader. Josh Plummer, Maintenance, met with the commissioners and updated them on the collapsed clay pipe that that was dug out in front of the courthouse.

Stanley Dick made a motion for Josh Plummer, Shane Gallagher, and Austin Lafrenz, create a plan to replace

the cement, motion carried. Austin Lafrenz was not in the meeting to vote on the motion. Matt Wright, Sheriff, met with the commissioners to discuss the 2017 Expedition that will be replaced with a new vehicle with the Stonegarden Grant. It was decided to keep the vehicle and decide what department it will go to. Stephanie Bata, Tax Director, gave the commissioners a preview of the county’s new Beacon site. Greg Goodman made a motion to transfer $1,540.00 from Road & Bridge Fund to Road & Bridge Equipment Replacement Fund, seconded

“Delaying marketing of calves is always a good position in an ‘up’ market, but we currently have a lot of uncertainty in the current market,” said Tim Petry, NDSU Extension livestock marketing specialist. “Marketing information is helpful in planning as well as for LRP insurance.”

Compared to previous years, feed prices continue to be low, according to Karl Hoppe, NDSU Extension live-

stock specialist.

“Low corn price directly leads to lower feed cost per pound of gain,” said Hoppe. “Feed is the highest cost input except the cost of the calf.”

Jake Galbreath, NDSU Extension veterinarian, says healthy calves are paramount to great feeding performance.

“Vaccinations can be extremely valuable, but some calves still need medical assistance,” said Dr. Galbreath, emphasizing that knowing when to intervene is crucial.

Maintaining or increasing the cow herd numbers begins with heifer development, according to Lacey Quail, NDSU Extension livestock management specialist.

“Managing heifers for the proper rate of gain and growth development is needed to ensure good breeding success,” said Quail.
