We list just a few here: AWOL Tours Offers tourists a unique bicycle tour experience through Masiphumelele. 55 on Main The iconic art deco building, 55 on Main, situated on the corner of Main, Beach & Station roads, was recently acquired by Miami resident Dr Carnie Matisonn. He believed the building’s position on Beach Road, within easy walking distance of the family friendly beach, would assist in realising his vision for a revitalised seaside town. The building has been extensively renovated & stylishly furnished, offering individual bedrooms en-suite and fully equipped self-catering apartments, to let for short,-medium-,and long-term periods. On site facilities include a Thai spa & wellness centre, free secure parking with controlled access, free Wi-Fi and on-site laundry services.

Great News!
You can still call a plumber, electrician or someone to fix your roof in lockdown Just because you are on lockdown doesn’t mean things are going smoothly at home. And when your geyser springs a leak or your tap suddenly begins to drip, or even worse, should your plugs decide to trip the house for no visible reason, you don’t have to stress yourself out thinking about having to live with these problems.
&
South Africans will be able to call out for emergency repair workers such as electricians and plumbers, for the remainder of the extended lockdown period to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Eddie had heard all about the new sergeant that had arrived in town recently. The man had brought a boat, from Johannesburg with him – transported it to the falls via train.
U
nfortunately, on it’s maiden voyage in the Zambezi river, the sergeant’s boat had been hit from underneath by a hippo – it had cracked a hole in the bottom and the sergeant had never again used it nor gone back on the water. With wide, purposeful steps, Eddie made his way to the sergeants house. Once he explained the reason for his uninvited appearance at the man’s opulent home, the sergeant quickly invited Eddie in and asked to see the goods. A man of fine breeding, the sergeant quickly calculated the value of Eddie’s goods and agreed to swap the broken boat for the silver tea set and china. The sergeant couldn’t believe his luck and smiled at Eddie as if he were a half-wit. Eddie on the other hand couldn’t quite believe that the sergeant was really as small minded as everyone had said. The boat was easily repaired with a few extra planks of wood and
bitumen, and in a few short days, Eddie was able to row his boat into the waters of the Zambezi. He smiled as he made his way upstream to a crocodile nest he knew well, his rifle next to him, a torch strapped to the front of his boat, a plan forming in his head. As it turned out, crocodile hunting was incredibly profitable. Possibly even more so as it wasn’t exactly legal. The crocodiles Eddie shot were indeed animals found in the national park, that much was true, but most folk considered crocodiles to be dangerous vermin that prevented swimming in the river. Along with hippos. But Eddie didn’t worry too much about hippos, despite his father’s death as a result of an angry hippo. He ran his operation at night, when the hippos came on land. To catch crocodiles, Eddie would launch his boat from his newly built jetty, in front of his home, and float
down the mighty Zambezi, oars strapped to the boat, his gun lying in the bottom of the boat, whilst he scouted the banks. He knew where most of the crocodile nests were along the banks, but he was always on the lookout for new crocodile populations. He knew better than to hunt out a nest. You needed to let the buggers grow, big and fat. Eddie preferred to hunt by the light of the full moon. It lit his way and helped him to see the crocodiles as they floated to the surface, after he’d shot them. He would then be able to row towards the floating animal, grab it by its short legs and strap it to the side of the boat. Depending on the size of the crocodile, Eddie could make more than enough money to live off for a few months, plus a little extra for the ladies he enjoyed visiting in town. The traders he supplied liked Eddie and his crocodile skins, and they were prepared to pay a fair price.

masicorp
Masiphumelele
helping to make a lasting difference
let us succeed T
he word Masiphumelele means "let us succeed" and this community strives to live up to its name. There are many challenges for Masi residents. Unemployment, overcrowding, crime, limited access to housing, water and sanitation all contribute to a daily struggle for those living in this community. Quality education is beyond reach for many residents. Despite the challenges experienced on a daily basis by those living in Masi, the community is incredibly resilient and eager for opportunities to help them succeed. For over 20 years, Masicorp has been operating in the township of Masiphumelele, providing access to opportunities through education and skills development. This NPO runs 26 programmes ranging from early childhood development initiatives, to primary and high school support in Maths, English &
Science. The skills development programmes taking place train children, teens and adults in computers and sewing. In total, over 6 000 people per year benefit from these programmes. The organisation was originally founded in 1999 by John and Carol Thompson. Although they are now based in the USA, they are still actively involved in the organisation, and frequently visit Masiphumelele, bringing visitors and friends who always generously support and give back to the community through volunteering and fundraising efforts. In the early days of Masicorp, the organisation was run by just 3 volunteers. Today 64 staff and 47 volunteers dedicate their time to work towards giving back to Masi residents and the projects that benefit them. The majority of Masicorp staff live in the Masiphumelele community and are involved in the everyday

running of the organisation. This community involvement is a vital component which has contributed to the success of Masicorp’s programmes and impact over the years. This relationship has guided the organisation on how best to help the Masi community in an acceptable and sustainable way. The approach has always been to ask the community where and how they need support – never to arrive with pre-conceived assumptions on what is needed. Between 1999 and 2009, building was a significant part of Masicorp’s work. During this time, 23 houses were built, as well as a crèche and what is now the Masiphumelele community library. This library has now been handed over to the City of Cape Town, however Masicorp still operates a computer lab within the library, offering free computer training courses to the Masi community.
Education for children a priority
18
Today, Masicorp operates two pre-schools: Chasmay Educare (120 children) and Masi Educare (150 children) as well as 270 children and their caregivers who attend informal pre-schools in the community, through an upskilling programme called Stay & Play. Masicorp also works closely with Ukhanyo Primary school offering
learning support programmes in English, Maths, Science and a reading programme called Masifunde for struggling learners. Education support for Masi high learners is extended through Maths & Science programmes which is run in partnership with volunteers like Rob Douglas of Fish Hoek High School (Maths). Tuition takes part weekly and Masi Grade 11 & 12 learners are able to study alongside their peers attending FHHS. Other opportunities available for teens through Masicorp programmes are free accredited ICDL computer
training courses (International Computer Driving License), sewing programmes (in partnership with The Sewing Café), as well as a Pathways programme focusing on work and study prospects for youth attending Masi High School. In 2019, Masicorp held its first Careers Indaba for these learners, inviting learning institutions and other organisations to share opportunities with the Grade 11’s and 12’s. An art programme for young teen girls was also launched in 2019, covering issues and challenges unique to youth living in communities such as Masi.
How to help
Partners Evangeline Ministries By partnering with Evangeline Ministries, every year 48 women are trained in English, Computers and Sewing, each receiving a sewing machine at the end of their training. City of Cape Town The Chasmay Road Campus is a City owned property, but several years ago Masicorp was given a mandate by the City to manage these buildings. Currently there are 18 other NPO’s operating from these premises and the campus offers secure and affordable space for them to carry out their work.
There are many opportunities for those living outside of Masiphumelele to be involved in uplifting this community. Volunteers eager to help in Masicorp’s programmes are able to assist with reading and pre-school activities, after school clubs, sports, or by supporting Masicorp with fundraising and administration.
MCC Masi 750 Sports Club An initiative of ex-cricketer Vince van der Bijl in supporting sports development in Masiphumelele. The sports programme at Ukhanyo Primary school was launched just 18 months ago, and during this time the school has seen enormous development in their sporting facilities as well as the number and training of coaches. Sports participation by children has increased exponentially, and MCC750 is now setting its sights on Masiphumelele High School to expand sports development in Masiphumelele.
There are many ways to be involved. If you would like to learn more, get in touch – contact@masicorp.org
On Masicorp’s 20th anniversary, the organisation launched their monthly giving programme ‘’Friends of Masicorp’’. A small monthly donation of R150 (or more) will go towards supporting the organisation and the projects being run in the Masi community. Visit the Masicorp website www.masicorp.org to find out more.
The Sewing Cafe Based at Chasmay Road Campus, aims to skill community members in sewing – eventually providing them with an opportunity to earn an income through commissioned work. In late 2018, supported by Masicorp, the first high school sewing programme was launched.

WE FIGHT BACK The luxury of doing nothing has passed. We are going to dig the trenches in Masiphumelele with home-grown superfood to fight against this coronavirus.
W
e are going to set up a 1km grow membrane to produce high dense nutrient-rich food grown in the middle of the formal township of Masiphumelele to be distributed to the needy, old and frail at no cost. Views have been expressed to community leaders and elders that a defence against this pandemic, is vast amounts of fresh food grown in microbial active living soil, producing powerful superfood to ensure the people maintain good gut flora, and have access to the beneficial microbes. If ever there was a time to invite the good microbes into our life, it would be right now. For those living in poverty we believe it would be their only line of defence, far more powerful than hand sanitiser and antibiotics. We have propagated 3 000 seedlings/young plants, and we have another 10 000 inbound.
We have written permission from the principle of Ukhanyo primary school to use the property, and Food Lovers market have granted us access to cubes of cardboard – as we are going to need loads of carbon to kick start this puppy. We are in despirate need to loan a 50mm petrol operated water pump. If anyone local has one we could borrow please contact us. (Southern suburbs) Big shout out to Leslie from Cape Agricultural Products for donating 1 000 grow bags! 10 young men from the community will assist in the setting up of the membrane, mixing soil, and planting, which commenced on Tuesday 31 March, transplanting of 3 000 young plants, and moving 8 tons of earth. If you would like to contribute financially, it would be greatly appreciated.

At first glance, trench gardens appear similar to traditional vegetable gardens. Instead of building a raised bed, gardeners do the opposite and dig into the ground to create a hole or trench into which they place fertilizer and moisture-retaining layers before planting crops. Only a small amount of topsoil lies above ground level. Trench gardens are easy to build and maintain.
Benefits Lyers of organic materials break down over time and add nutrients to the soil, promoting a way to grow vegetables and flowers that is kind to the environment. These same organic materials also retain moisture, meaning that less watering is needed. Trench gardens are also inexpensive to construct, with little or no purchased materials required.
top tips
Construction Select a plot of land large enough so that you can dig a trench that is about as deep as the length of a shovel. You will need a wheelbarrow, manure, medium to large stones to line the perimeter of the garden, dried leaves or small branches and straw or cardboard. To make your trench garden effective, you'll make layers, starting with leaves or
branches on the bottom, then straw or cardboard. Other layers include topsoil and manure. Mix in manure with the final layer on top to ensure plenty of nutrients for plants. Stones around the garden perimeter will prevent soil erosion & retain heat.
Planting To ensure that your garden stays fertile and pest resistant, plant a minimum of four vegetables. Leave approximately 50cms between rows to allow plants enough room to grow while reducing competition for nutrients and moisture. Use companion planting and sow crops of different types next to each other. Put leafy crops next to root vegetables to obtain mutual benefits, as this method works well in trench gardens. Other vegetables that work well in this environment include spinach and lettuce as well as larger crops such as eggplant, beans, tomatoes and peppers.

Why advertise during a pandemic? Let us at Billboard help you navigate these unchartered waters by reaching 40 000 customers, at 3 readers per copy, conservatively, in the comfort of their own homes plus free online advertising - now that is a bargain!
The Coronavirus is impacting consumer mobility, shifts in media consumption habits, supply chains, and economic volatility. With this dynamic situation, companies need to plan their next marketing moves wisely to
capture all the upside that’s possible. Advertisers should capitalise on marketing investments and double down to seize the opportunities. It's crucial for organisations to pay attention to how this situation is altering the landscape and plan
scenarios accordingly. Adverts became an unavoidable part of modern life for a simple reason: They work. Their absence would be conspicuous. Keep your customers aware of your products and services through this pandemic with us.

Magwinya or fat cakes, a national favourite and unique South African fried bread similar to vetkoek. Magwinya is referred to as township food in South Africa, it is a very popular snack.
Magwinya (Fat Cakes) six simple ingredients are needed
• 500ml flour (4 cups) • 4 Tbsp sugar
• 2 tsp instant yeast • Half tsp of salt
• oil to cook in • water as needed
In nine steps, you can make this delicious treat at home with little effort 1. Simply sift the flour into a bowl. 2. Then, add and mix all of the dry ingredients together. 3. Pour warm water to the dry ingredients gradually as needed. Lukewarm water will create soft dough that doesn't run. 4. Start mixing the dough with a wooden spoon. This mixture will form a wet and sticky dough, so no kneading is required. 5. Once the dough is mixed thoroughly (about 5 min), cover the dish with a damp cloth and allow it to rise for about 1 hour in a warm area. After 60 min, the dough should double in size.
6. Once your dough has risen, it needs to be mixed so the air can be beaten out of it. Once this is completed, you can allow the dough to rest for another 10 -15 minutes. 7. At this point, the mixture will be quite springy: • Place some dough into a spoon and scoop it into the oil. You may want to use a second spoon to push the dough into the oil. • Make sure the oil is on medium heat. If the doughnuts brown immediately, the oil may be too hot. Getting the temperature right is important because you can easily get doughnuts very brown on the outside but raw on

the inside. Tip: Fry just one magwinya to test the heat of the oil. When you think it's ready, take it out and allow it to cool enough to handle. Then, open it up and taste the center of the doughnut. If it's still raw, you'll need to turn the heat of the oil up more. If it is very brown and raw inside, the heat is probably too high. 8. After you've tested your oil, it's time to keep frying. Fry the dough on each side for approximately 2 min. 9. Place into a dish lined with absorbent kitchen paper in order to drain away excess oil. For extra indulgence, roll it in jam and sugar.

Bags for lads in Masiphumelele In April 2018, a course for learners from Masiphumelele High School was launched teaching them basic sewing skills at The Sewing Café. This programme is a partnership between Masicorp and The Sewing Café, and since the launch over 30 eager learners have passed through this free course. Learners are guided on the basics of handling the sewing machine and were soon able to sew straight lines. During the
course, they each made a pencil case, a bag, a pillow slip, a shirt or skirt and they were given the opportunity to alter samples which had been donated by Pick ‘n Pay. They ended off by making their own school tracksuit. Someleze Jabe, a Grade 10 learner from Masi High, was one of the first to join the programme. Since completing the course, he has launched his own range of bags which are now being sold
to customers in and outside Masiphumelele. His dedication and passion led to a large order being placed by Rainbow pre-school in Masi, where he supplied high quality branded bags for the children. Someleze’s drive and passion has made him the shining star of this programme and continues to be mentored by The Sewing Café.

Bringing Hope, Breaking Despair Living Hope based in Capri, together with its 7 branches, has been extremely busy during the COVID-19 crisis which is both a hunger and health crisis. While our other programmes such as the Farm, HIV testing, Home Based Care and the Health Care Centre continue to run as normal, we have also taken on door to door medication delivery around the South Peninsula of Cape Town (over 100 packages of Chronic Meds delivered daily to people’s doors) as well as front line COVID-19 screening in Masiphumelele together with Department of Health doctors doing the actual testing. In addition Living Hope has developed a huge database of folk who live in Masiphumelele. We have been able to feed over 6 735 families with food for about 10 days. This translates into feeding about 27,000 people for 10 days, which roughly equates to 270,000 main meals along with coffee and tea! We can't say thank you enough to the generosity of friends and donors of the Valley. The response has been overwhelming but the need is far greater. We simply can’t keep up with the requests for food. Donations can be given to: Bank: FNB • Branch: 202 309 • Acc: Disaster Appeal account • No: 6267 2419 267
