Why Big Sky BY MICHAEL J. PARKER

When people ask me why Big Sky, and why should I buy here, my response is always: Are you looking for a place to call home? There is an abundance of reasons to consider Big Sky. And what I tell our clients is that it’s not just about an incredible real estate opportunity. It’s the skiing (the Biggest in America), the golf (some of the top courses in the world), the hiking, the abundance of wildlife, whitewater rafting, kayaking, the clean air and clean water, the hunting, sporting clays, the mountain biking, the summer days that last until 10pm, the blue ribbon fly fishing, oh and the grandeur and the beauty of this place — it can’t be beat. With the continually expanding Town Center, there are more restaurants, a new hospital, and our one of a kind movie theater. And the people. I could go on and on. Very few who live here, whether they are seasonal residents or year-round, want to move to someplace else. Many come here for the scenery and outdoor adventures, but they stay and raise families here for the people. Most Big Sky residents are so grateful to be here, and this shows through in the community. There is some deeper reason as well — quality time with the family. Getting together with loved ones and spending time creating memories. A place to get away to, leave that world behind and explore, grow and live outside the business-life and cities that many call home. Turn off phones, screens…all screens, get outside and enjoy the fruits of why and what you’ve worked so hard for. A wise woman once told me, “This is what I invested for, this is what I planned to do with the money I was making, giving my family a place to create photos, memories, and laughter. I wanted my children and my grandchildren to have a place that they will always remember. Some of our fondest family memories are found in our vacation stories. The laughter, the

joy, the tribulations and experiences that help create who they are and who they become. I wanted my family to have such a special place. I wanted my next investment to be in us — a transfer from just a monetary investment to an investment in the happiness of our family.” Almost everyone must fly here — there are no crowds for a reason. Most ski areas have a drive-in market. Weekend visitors who dash for the mountains as soon as the work-week ends. Denver and the I-70 ski resorts, San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake and Park City, New York, Boston and New England, Southern California and Mammoth. Not here. No drive-in market means the powder days are just for us, the people who call Big Sky home. Big Sky is not for everyone. For those who respect healthy living and outdoor adventure at its finest; who love the powder; the non-existent lift lines; the site of elk, mountain goats, deer, moose, and bear in every day life; and who love the freedom of space, this place is truly magical. And for those people who want their family’s life experiences to be surrounded by this truly magical place — try it on…talk to the people who already own in Big Sky. Dive in, get to know the people who make this place what it is. Something to think about. Big Sky is growing rapidly and there are many reasons why...

Cheers,

Michael L. Parker The Big Sky Real Estate Co. Director of Sales & Marketing

Condominium

Single-family homes trade at a premium to condo product, both on an absolute and a per-square-foot basis. One reason is that the stock of condo product is relatively old and of lower quality compared to the single-family home segment, which has seen more new development in recent years. Nonetheless, average price appreciation has occurred in both segments with single-family home prices increasing 16% and condominium prices increasing 9% from January 1, 2012 to May 15, 2017.

Hiking Under the Big Sky Not all who wander are lost. For those who call the mountains home, hiking is a favorite pastime, a part of life here in Big Sky. The choices for hikes in Montana are endless, and to name a favorite, or even two or three, is hard to do. It comes down to what you like: steep terrain, grand vistas, alpine lakes, waterfalls, or long meandering trails amongst meadows. Montana has it all. We asked Moonlight Basin Director of Outfitters, Paul Neuman and Spanish Peaks Mountain Club Activities Manager, Mackenzie Johnson what their favorite hikes are in the area for their guests. Get out with your family and conquer these incredible, breathtaking trails.

Ousel Falls — Easy to Slightly Moderate

If you only have time for one hike that is family friendly, make sure you trek to scenic Ousel Falls. This trail can be easily done in under an hour, so pack a lunch to enjoy at the base of the Falls to extend your time here. Located 1.8 miles from the Big Sky Town Center, this out-andback trail is 1.6 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of 469 feet.

Spanish Creek to Pioneer Falls — Easy to Moderate

The drive to the trailhead is fun in itself! Surrounded by bison on Ted Turner’s Ranch, the trail begins by weaving through wetlands, into meadows and through pine forests with incredible views of the Spanish Peaks. After 2.5 miles, the switchbacks wind to the brink of Pioneer Falls. It’s a three-hour hike out-and-back for a total of 6 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,600 feet.

Golden Trout Lakes — Moderately Strenuous

Located up Portal Creek, this out-and-back trail leads to three beautiful alpine lakes with fantastic fishing opportunities. Easily spot Golden Trout in the crystalclear mountain water. For those who haven’t taken the Portal Creek Road, it is rough and long. Be prepared and let someone know where you’re heading in case of a vehicle malfunction where there is no service. Plan for 3 hours to hike this out-and-back trail. Total mileage is 5 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,300 feet.

45

Dudley Lake— Strenuous

Dudley Lake is in a beautiful alpine valley that sits below Mount Wilson, just north of Big Sky. This hike is 11 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of 2,700 feet. If you are feeling very adventurous, continue above the lake to the summit of Mount Wilson.

Cinnamon Mountain — Moderately Strenuous

The Cinnamon Mountain Fire Lookout is situated on Cedar Mountain, south of Big Sky with incredible views of the surrounding Taylor and Hilgard peaks, the Gallatin range, and Yellowstone National Park. This hike is 8.6 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of 2,670 vertical feet. At the end of your hike, make sure to treat yourself to an ice cold drink at The Cinnamon Lodge situated across the street from this Aspen-lined trail.

Bighorn Peak - Strenuous

Big Horn Peak is one of the more prominent peaks in the southern Gallatin Range on the border of Yellowstone National Park. This hike takes you 6.4 miles up the Black Butte trail in Yellowstone National Park, then travels through the Petrified Forest while gaining 3,200 vertical feet on your way to the summit. This hike is 12.8-miles round trip, with a gain of 3,200 vertical feet.

“The choices for hikes in Montana are endless.”

MOONLIGHT BASIN

“There’s just something special about Moonlight.”

We hear this sentiment all the time. And that’s because there is indeed something very special about Moonlight Basin and all that it has to offer to its owners and members. There is nowhere like it in any other resort town in the Mountain West. As a ski-in, ski-out community at the base of Lone Peak and Big Sky Resort, with direct access to vast public land areas, including the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, Moonlight Basin includes extensive acreage for downhill and nordic skiing, hiking, and mountain bike trails. A Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course (recently voted as one of the Best New Courses by Golf Digest Magazine); a dog sledding outfitter; summer and winter lakeside amenities at Ulery’s Lake, “Glamping”; Camp Moonlight for children during summer; and many other guided outdoor activities are all a part of the Moonlight lifestyle. The renovated Moonlight Lodge includes a fitness area, a Member’s Lounge, and an outdoor pool and hot tub that look over the valley. The Tavern restaurant is open to the public for slopeside dining and après drinks with live music several nights a week. It’s the perfect combination of an exclusive club, world-class golf, an expert and seasoned Outfitters team for any and every outdoor activity Montana offers, and a lively and fun Lodge that includes one of the best après scenes in Big Sky, as well as an extensive family area for kids to play while parents dine and drink. It all combines wonderfully to make a unique mountain resort and private club experience. And the staff tend to agree. It’s a club where staff and members spend time together enjoying the “regulars” and club members, along with traveling visitors to The Tavern. All who usually have a story to tell about their incredible day at Moonlight. We asked both Moonlight Head Golf Pro, Greg Wagner and Director of Outfitters, Paul Neumann what is their ideal day at Moonlight Basin.

The perfect RESERVE day for Moonlight Head Golf Pro, Greg Wagner: Golf at Moonlight Basin is one of the most unique and unforgettable family golf experiences in the West. The course will challenge the more avid golfers in the family, and mesmerize those just looking for a casual ride-along with stunning mountain vistas in every direction. With just about every species of wildlife found south of us in Yellowstone National Park calling Moonlight home, it’s not uncommon for one of our local wildlife visitors to “play” through a group. The Cabin, after hole 12, adds a little more adventure to the round and is a must-stop to please the little ones in the group, though I promise mom and dad won’t be disappointed either. Our Pizza and Par 3 nights at the clubhouse are a family favorite as well. The short course is perfect for those just learning the game and I can’t picture a better place to end an active day on the mountain than with an ice-cold beverage and wood fired pizza, while watching the kids enjoy lawn games and meeting new friends. Director of Outfitters, Paul Neumann shared his favorite Moonlight Outfitting Itinerary: One of my favorite days for a Moonlight Adventure is to start with a morning yoga class at Ulery’s Lake Camp followed by a guided mountain bike ride to Lee’s Poole. Shoot a round of sporting clays with one of our National Sporting Clays certified instructors, or go on a ‘hunt’ though the 3D Archery Course with our Moonlight Outfitting team. For the afternoon, fuel up at the Food Truck at Ulery’s Lake Camp and relax on the beach, or go stand-up paddleboarding beneath some of the most incredible views of Lone Peak. Then head to the Moonlight Tavern for dinner.

MEADOW VILLAGE & TOWN CENTER

Welcome to the Rodeo Big Sky’s Premier Event For the past four years, Big Sky’s Pro Bull Riding event has been voted by the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) as their “Favorite Event of the Year.” And there’s a reason. This intimate, yet exciting event is unlike any of the usual PBR stops on the tour. An open-air competition, under the views of Lone Peak, and a high-energy crowd — it’s what a rodeo should be. And like many aspects of Big Sky, it brings back an earlier, more simple time of the true West. “Every resort town has a signature event and for Big Sky, it’s the PBR,” says Eric Ladd, CEO of Outlaw Partners and event producer. The event generates millions of dollars in commerce for the town and creates a true awareness of the Big Sky community at a national level. Because of PBR and the number of people it attracts, rodeo fans have taken notice of Big Sky and what a special mountain town it is — authentic and sincere in its culture. Along with Outlaw Partners, PBR gathers hundreds of businesses to help sponsor and execute Big Sky’s premiere event. Each year, it draws more people to the area than any other annual event in Big Sky. “For a resort town to be a success, it must not only have great real estate offerings and recreational amenities, it must also have world class events and entertainment,” says Ladd. “PBR brings together the arts, music, authentic rodeo and an action packed four days to Big Sky.” The 2017 PBR takes place June 28 - 29, 2017. Bull riding begins at 7pm with live music open to the public after the competitions.

“Every resort town has a signature event and for Big Sky, it’s the PBR.”

Exploring Town Center The Heart of Our Community. Imagine a warm summer night in Big Sky’s Town Center, looking up at the sun setting behind Lone Peak, and you’re listening to a nationally acclaimed band live at the Town Center’s stage. This is what a Thursday night actually looks like in Big Sky from June to September with Big Sky’s free summer concert series, Music in the Mountains. For more than a decade, Music in the Mountains, put on by

The Arts Council of Big Sky, has been Montana’s finest free outdoor concert series. Each summer some of the best up-andcoming touring musicians in the country, as well as established, well-known artists come to Big Sky to perform in a spectacular outdoor venue. It’s a weekly summer event for locals and visitors to come together and enjoy incredible live music under the beautiful sky and Lone Peak.

Stunning Meadow Estate

MEADOW VILLAGE & TOWN CENTER

The Music in the Mountains concert series benefits the Big Sky community by bringing together residents and visitors to celebrate music in a beautiful outdoor setting,” says Brian Hurlbut, Executive Director of The Arts Council of Big Sky. “It’s a reminder that not only does Big Sky offer endless recreational opportunities, it boasts a vibrant cultural scene as well. The summer concerts are also an economic driver for the community, as it brings people from around the area to hear nationally touring artists perform in one of the best outdoor venues in the region.” These family-friendly complimentary concerts are held every Thursday from June through September, starting at 6 p.m. The series also includes the annual July 4th concert, as well as a performance from Montana Shakespeare in the Parks.

“In the next few years, the heart of Town Center will truly emerge.”

Another weekly event in Big Sky’s town center is the Farmer’s Market, where local artisans, food purveyors and Big Sky businesses come together for a fun community gathering. It’s not just any farmer’s market. It’s Big Sky’s. Which means there is always a familiar face, a community feel, and a place to see all of your neighbors and friends. Like most aspects of this unique mountain town, the Town Center is a very special gathering spot for the residents of Big Sky during the summer and fall months. Bozeman natives the Simkins family has owned land in Big Sky since the town’s pioneering days of the early 1970’s. The Simkins have been responsibly guiding the planning and development of the Town Center neighborhood for more than 20 years, always supporting their commitment to leave a legacy of which the community and their family can be proud. Ryan Hamilton, Project Manager for Town Center, says, “In the next few years, the heart of the Town Center plan will truly emerge as the central Plaza, with the first hotel, and additional mixed-use buildings completed along Town Center Avenue. We are most excited about the new businesses and the ‘outdoor rooms’ that the buildings frame, which help bring people together to enjoy friends, community events, and incredible experiences in Big Sky.” We welcome you to visit us in our new Sales Office at 25 Town Center Avenue. Whether you are looking for information on the local trails or have a property you wish to learn more about, stop in and say hello.

Growing Up in Big Sky A Truly Unique Educational Experience. We all have memories of our childhood, particularly when it comes to school. Whether it be field trips, favorite teachers and coaches, best friends, sports teams, theater, music and art classes, or just a particular subject that resonated with us as a student. School is an invaluable part of our upbringings. Which is why when we become parents, it’s also the biggest concern. It’s rare you find a parent that is not heavily involved with their child’s school, quality of teachers, class sizes, and a like-minded philosophy on the importance of education. Big Sky has attracted many highly educated, motivated and successful families not only for its quality of life in a beautiful mountain town, but also for the level of academics that Big Sky’s schools offer. Big Sky’s schools are committed to a high level of education with an extremely supportive community of families who are very much involved. “Not only do they have an opportunity to be immersed in the outdoors, skiing, golf and other mountain lifestyle activities,” says Shana Seelye, parent of two. “They are also receiving a world class education. I couldn’t be more pleased with our decision to raise our family here.”

“I’ve been amazed by the level of education my children have received during our time in Big Sky.”

Big Sky School District #72 is now a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The IB program is a highly rigorous, well respected approach to education. It involves activities and curriculum enhancing students’ awareness of social, cultural and economic environments locally, nationally and internationally. It begins at the elementary level and continues on through high school until students graduate. It’s been a community effort to commit to this level of education for students in Big Sky. “As an IB world school, Big Sky is part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world,” says Big Sky Superintendent, Dustin Shipman. “The positive results of the district’s decision making and commitment to high expectations, along with the community’s engagement in a grass roots effort to make the IB program a success, is a large step in fulfilling the goal to become the best school district in the state of Montana and ultimately the Northwest.” Along with the rigorous program in the public schools, families in Big Sky also have an alternative option at the Big Sky Discovery Academy (BSDA), an independent school for pre-K through eighth grade students that follows the Montessori philosophy of education. This philosophy includes mixed-aged classes, in which older students serve as role models and helpers for the younger students; a full array of Montessori learning materials; accredited and nurturing Montessori teachers, who serve as guides rather than information givers; and other Montessori-based curriculum options. The school also has a highly successful learning center that offers college prep and adult education programs. “At BSDA, we believe both our school and our Community Learning Center enrich the families of Big Sky,” says Executive Director, Nettie Breuner. “We are extremely proud of our pre-K through eighth grade Montessori school, as well as our Learning Center, which offers enriching youth, college prep and adult education programs accessible to the entire community. Our ultimate goal is to work with local schools and community partners to enhance and create the best educational opportunities in any resort town in the country.”

“People come back to Big Sky, because every incredible thing they hear about this place is true.”

As the owner of a property management company in Big Sky, why do you think people choose Big Sky for their vacations and second-home properties?

I think people make their first visit to Big Sky to see if the rumors are true... Is our skiing as uncrowded and amazing as advertised? Do we really have some of the best fishing in North America? Are we going to run into wildlife on our hike up Beehive Basin? Is Yellowstone National Park really that close and accessible? They come back because everything they heard about Big Sky is true. They know when they come here, they get exactly what they expected.

What is your ideal Sunday with your family during the summer?

If not working and showing real estate, you can find me on Sundays at Hebgen Lake with my active teenage children and husband, Andrew. Hebgen Lake was created by Hebgen Dam and is a short 45 minute drive from Big Sky. It is well known for the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake that occurred nearby in 1959, forming Quake Lake, which is located immediately downstream. We spend our time at Hebgen Lake enjoying many activities, including fishing, sailing, water skiing, kneeboarding, wakeboarding, and of course, wake surfing — my family’s favorite. On a warm day, you may even find me airborne jumping from the rope swing! The Hebgen Lake Yacht Club typically has regattas on the weekends, so if you enjoy sailing be sure to give me a call as we are always looking for crew! Hebgen Lake on a Sunday, or for that matter any day of the week, is certainly something you don’t want to miss out on during your summer stay in Big Sky!

“Hebgen Lake is something you don’t want to miss out on during your summer in Big Sky.” ABOUT SUZANNE Suzanne’s first priority when meeting with

“Big Sky has been a wonderful place to raise our kids. It is a thrill to see them embrace all that we moved here for and love.” What are two of your favorite memories from your 30 years of living in Big Sky?

Being an entrepreneur - Big Sky has been fabulous to me and allowed my entrepreneurial spirit to develop and flourish. I started Serendipity’s that was located upstairs in the Mountain Mall at the base of Big Sky in 1990. We served ice cream, baked goods and baked potatoes with toppings for lunch. We brought the first espresso machine to Big Sky! Then I opened the Huckleberry Café in town. And I had an ice cream shop in the small A -frame building at the entrance to Big Sky. I also had my real estate license at the time. I ultimately sold all of the businesses and focused on my real estate business, my true passion.

OUR TEAM

Do you have any words of wisdom for building a house in Big Sky?

We had an outstanding contractor that kept us in the loop at every turn. Look for a builder who will communicate weekly with you on the progress of your home and take the time to visit the site whenever possible. Know the style you are looking for in your finishes. An interior decorator can be very helpful for ideas and helping you pick the style you love. Get the whole family involved in the planning process. We have a big family that participates in outdoor activities year-round and we knew a large mudroom was mandatory. We let the kids pick their room colors and this made it fun for them to help coordinate the finishes. Remember, it can be a formidable process, but with the right builder it is all worth it to have my family be able to live and play in Big Sky!

“All the challenges of building a house in Big Sky have been worth it to be able to have my family live and play here. ABOUT PATRICE Patrice moved to Big Sky in 2007 from

Traverse City, Michigan with her husband and three children. She became interested in Luxury Vacation Rentals and proceeded to work in a fast-upscale company becoming involved in marketing and sales. She is passionate about Montana, so the move to Big Sky was a natural fit. With encouragement from her family and Martha, Patrice obtained her Real Estate License and is poised to help you find the best real estate for your specific needs. Patrice and her family recently built a house in Big Sky. Something she found to be both challenging yet exciting. It was a dream her family had for several years and finally made come true. She enjoyed watching the home start from a holein-the-ground and take shape into a house. In her free-time, Patrice loves to trail run in the mountains, conquer the peaks of Big Sky, ski fresh powder and visit Yellowstone National Park.

“Big Sky has so many awesome, but different views.”

Where is your favorite spot in Big Sky to watch the sunset?

Do I have to choose just one?! Big Sky has so many awesome but different views, it is hard to choose just one location. Moonlight Basin offers unparalleled views of the snowcapped Spanish Peaks at sunset, while the base area at Big Sky Resort offers a great social atmosphere to enjoy sunsets after a fun day of skiing or hiking. The Spanish Peaks Mountain Club offers a completely different view from the Clubhouse overlooking the 18th Green, while the sun sets behind Lone Peak and Southern Comfort ski run. Sunset from my home in Antler Ridge, halfway between the Meadow Village and Big Sky Resort, offers a completely different sunset from the privacy of our deck that faces Lone Peak and Elk Park Ridge ski run. 123

What is your ideal day in Big Sky with your three daughters?

My ideal day would be a warm sunny summer day waking up at our leisure and then taking a walk to what we all affectionately call the Cliffs. This area is basically in our back yard – just a short walk from our house off Ousel Falls trail leading up to the Ousel Falls trailhead. We all like to sit there, take in the view, chat about various things and see who can throw a rock the farthest. Later, we go hang out at the Green Bridge in the Canyon and psych ourselves up to jump off the bridge into the icy cold water below, warm up from the jump, which thankfully happens very quickly, and do it all over again, until it’s almost time for dinner. We’ll go get ingredients to make our own pizza and inevitably other friends of my daughters have already joined us, and then a fun dance party happens listening to the girls’ top music picks. And maybe we’ll squeeze in some movie time too at Lone Peak Cinema in Town Center. It’s great to be a family in Big Sky!

“It’s great to be a family in Big Sky!” ABOUT SHAWNA Born and raised in South Florida, Shawna initially pursued an interest in theatre, which eventually led to opportunities in New York and Los Angeles. ABOUT MIA After working as an assistant in a Colorado real estate

office, Mia needed no encouragement to join the world of real estate when she moved to Big Sky in 2011. “Big Sky has an impressive amount of dining options, being from London, that’s saying a lot!” Which restaurants do you make sure to send visiting guests?

In Big Sky, we are lucky to have so many different options to choose from, and being from London, that is saying a lot! For the real Montana experience, I have been very impressed with the recently opened Horn and Cantle restaurant at Lone Mountain Ranch. The food is excellent and so is the service. The ranch itself offers its guests a great time, whether they are hungry or seeking adventure. Lotus Pad is some of the best Thai food I’ve had and a really fun atmosphere. For a great outdoor/family experience while dining, The Riverhouse is a must for locals and tourists alike. And then of course, the Tavern at Moonlight is a favorite for après adventures, or just a wonderful spot for enjoying a Montana Mule while watching the sunset.

OUR TEAM

As a new dad, what do you look forward to most in raising your family in Big Sky?

It’s difficult to pick out one particular thing that I most look forward to, simply because there are so many ‘best things’ about Big Sky, aside from the obvious — the incredibly beautiful setting, the close proximity and easy access to so many great outdoor activities and sports, the fact that we share our backyards with majestic wildlife, and the wonderful community of people that has formed here. The kind of person attracted to Big Sky, though all very different in many respects, share a love of and a respect for the outdoors and all it has to offer. They appreciate our environment and strive to preserve it. They value their quality of life. They care about their children growing up surrounded by these qualities and are raising them here for a reason. So, not only is this an incredibly safe place to raise our children, but it is close-knit, supportive, and filled with the type of people that I am proud to have influencing my son in this special place as well.

“The people attracted to Big Sky share a love and respect for the outdoors and all it has to offer.” ABOUT ALLEN Raised in a small coastal town in New England,

Allen always assumed that was where he would stay, never imagining he would abandon his beloved ocean to move west, of all places. However, after a deployment with the Marine Corps in 2005, Allen came to visit Big Sky. He immediately fell in love with the dramatic views of the magnificent northern Rockies, the clear mountain rivers, the fresh, crisp mountain air, and the vast open spaces. After completing his commitment to the Marines, Allen went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Babson College, and then pursued his career as a commercial real estate broker in Boston. In 2015, as luck would have it, he found a way to return to the place he had fallen in love with ten years earlier, this time to sell real estate. Allen is now happily settled in Big Sky with his wife, Emily, newborn son, Rives and three dogs. He could not imagine living anywhere else, and is eager to share this unique and amazing place with others. Allen loves connecting with his clients on a personal level and works hard to understand their real estate goals, in order to provide them with a completely custom experience in the place that he loves so much.

After that, Jeff operated one of two Sotheby’s International offices in Big Sky. In August of 2016, Jeff joined The Big Sky Real Estate Co.

“Big Sky has become an incredible place to call home, whether full time or part time.” What are the three tips you’d tell a buyer looking for property in Big Sky?

Big Sky has become an incredible place to call “home,” whether full time or part time. While the local real estate market continues to improve, it also remains very complex, differing significantly in pricing, days on market, and other important metrics such as the basic old adage of location, location, location. 1. Make sure you select a local real estate Broker with years of experience. Work with someone who has integrity, the knowledge base, negotiating skills, and deep understanding of the current market. Interview the Broker no differently than you would a financial advisor to determine their record of success. 2. Allow me to provide you with an in-depth analysis of real estate activity in Big Sky. We take the approach of showing you all available properties irrespective of their listing brokerage. As your representative, not only do we provide you with year-to-date data gathered on a quarterly basis, we provide per-square-foot comparisons, as well as a neighborhood or development comparison chart to find the Big Sky community that best suites your needs. 3. The third tip or piece of advice would be to request and reference our detailed real estate maps and aerial overlays we have created to help you have a visual of the entire Big Sky area. The maps get very specific and enable you to focus down to the exact area or community of interest. We can customize the map to demonstrate the locations of the respective sold properties over the last six (6) months, pending properties, as well as the active properties currently available. 127

As an avid runner and hiker, what is your favorite trail to run in Big Sky?

My favorite run or mellow hike is the Reflector Loop above the Meadow Village. There’s a view point midway along the trail that looks over all of Town Center, Meadow Village, the Westfork, and the Southfork neighborhoods. I’ve been doing this loop for close to 20 years and the view keeps changing with the growth and development in Big Sky. It’s a great point of perspective. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, then Bear Basin is my next favorite. It’s a commitment, but well worth it when you find yourself in the most lush basin, surrounded by historical rock formations and stunning wildflowers. It’s when being outdoors that I’m at my best!

“If you’re looking for an adventure, spend the day hiking Bear Basin.” ABOUT ANNE Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,

Anne moved to Big Sky in 1998 after graduating from Penn State University. She started working for the local newspaper, which allowed her to establish relationships within the professional community. From there, she moved on to the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce, which continued her involvement in the growth of Big Sky. In 2002, Anne was approached to help set up a local real estate company and after a few years on the job, received her broker’s license in 2006. Anne has been heavily involved in the community since she moved here and has been a board member with a local nonprofit, Women In Action, for the past eight years. “My favorite fishing spot in Big Sky is where the only thing distracting me from the bite is the view.” What is your favorite fishing spot in Big Sky?

My favorite fishing spot in Big Sky is where the fish are biting, and the only thing distracting me from the bite is the view. With that, I have dozens of favorites. What I love best about Big Sky is the fact that you can drive ten minutes to the Gallatin River and be in the water catching fish. Or you can hook up a boat, drive an hour, and be on the Madison floating and catching fish all day. The options to fish around the Big Sky area are endless, yet another reason Big Sky is such an amazing and special place to live.

You’ve traveled the world and have lived in many places, why Big Sky?

To answer that question, I must go back to my childhood, where wanderlust started early. At age eleven, I ventured off to Europe alone, spending a year with a host family not far from Salzburg in a quintessential Austrian village. I attended the small school, learned to ski on the local hill, rode my cherished hand-me-down bicycle and played outside until nightfall. It was idyllic in many ways and were it not for an expiring passport (and missing my parents back home), I might have never left. Over the next ten years, I continued to search for reasons and ways to get back there. It’s no surprise that when I stumbled upon Big Sky in the winter of 1995, I felt like I had come home. I moved here for what was initially to be five months. Months turned into years, now into decades. I still love to travel, often sharing the gift my parents gave me with my own children. When people ask me why Big Sky, my answer is simple: It not only feels nostalgic. It is. And I relish the fact that my children get to roam the way I did as a child… And that I let them. In many ways it is a step back in time, void of traffic jams and where every face is one of a neighbor. 131

OUR TEAM

As Big Sky continues to grow, what do you think are the best aspects of its growth as a community?

I think the growth we’ve seen in Big Sky has benefited local business owners immensely. At last, local businesses are seeing more consistent year-round business and residents are benefiting, especially during the shoulder seasons when many operations might have been closed in years past This growth has also enabled us to add a high school as well as a hospital, providing additional support to all who live and vacation in our community. We’ve seen a more robust trail system develop, as well as growth within the Arts — both of which will continue to be positive assets to our community. It’s been a pleasure to watch Big Sky grow over the years and I’m excited to see what’s next!

“It’s been a pleasure to watch Big Sky grow, and I’m excited to see what’s next.” ABOUT MICHELLE Michelle always dreamed of living in the

mountains. After graduating with a Master’s Degree from Ohio University, she headed west, ultimately making her home in Big Sky in 1994. These ventures have allowed her to become familiar with both visitors to the area and the ever changing year-round community of Big Sky. Ready for a change of pace and excited about Big Sky’s future, Michelle joined Ania’s team in 2004 to help others realize their dream of owning a piece of Big Sky and experience all that this unique community has to offer. She has been actively involved in the community by volunteering her time on various boards through the years and currently serves as Treasurer of the Big Sky Community Organization. You recently got engaged to Moonlight Basin’s Director of Outfitters. What are you looking forward to most in the next few years as a newly married couple in Big Sky?

I’m excited to continue to grow and learn together, doing all the things that initially drew my fiancée, Paul and me to Big Sky: big mountains to ski, wondrous hikes and bike rides to conquer, and unmatched trails to run. There are so many amazing adventures to experience with each other and our friends season-to-season, year-to-year. Our love for outdoor adventures is what brought us to this beautiful place, but the people are what has kept us. We are both looking forward to expanding our participation in the community, meeting new people, enjoying time with family and friends, and getting more involved in our very special mountain town.

“My first thought upon arriving in Big Sky nearly three decades ago? WOW!” What were your first thoughts about Big Sky when you moved here 29 years ago as a teenager?

To put it in perspective, at 18 years old, I had just driven across the United States from outside Philadelphia to Big Sky with my mom, two horses, and dog. I had no knowledge of or any preconceived notions of the area, much less what the state was like. So my first thought upon arriving in Big Sky? WOW!! Who would have imagined that driving up this little canyon along the Gallatin River there was an amazing ski area and town. In 1989, I saw this area as a tiny secret retirement community. It’s been incredible to see the growth in this special place.
