Oh, Poppets, it’s Spring! Longer, brighter, warmer days. Open windows.

The occasional robin or two. More and more events showing up in various social calendars. That last one is how I know Spring has arrived. Throughout winter, I search and scramble for suggestions for you. More often than not, I shrug and give into my penchant for politics.

Then spring comes and I have incredible choices to sift through and highlight.

First – and how did I not know about this before now?! – the Seattle Opera offers LGBT nights. There’s only one left this season, but it’s a good one. I thought I should make a plug for some local Bellingham talent and let the Betty Pages readers know about Bellingham’s own gay movie.

Apart From Hugh, 1994, Water Bearer Films, was a local project headed by Jon FitzGerald. It was very much in the tradition of “Let’s put on a show, I have some props in the barn”. The only crew/cast member with any real experience was the camera man Randall (Randy) Allred - who had a small photography studio.

Jon wrote out the story line managed to convince some local Rumor’s patrons to appear in the film and away they went. The actors had to create most of their own lines as there were no printed scripts only the story line with some suggestions.

The story is very simple Collin (David Merwin) and Hugh (Tim Arnold) are lovers, but Collin is restless and is seeking something more. To celebrate their anniversary Hugh decides to throw a party and invites Collin’s former roommate Freda (Jennifer Reed) a party/adventuress extraordinaire. Freda allows Collin to remember his wild single life and fuels his drive to return to his Bohemian lifestyle and leave Hugh.

Fredia arrives in Bellingham on the Greyhound bus (the bus station is now the Copper Hog restaurant) and goes to the nearest bar - Rumors, at it’s original location on State Street (D’Anna’s Restaurant) which really was next to the bus depot. For those who have never seen the original Rumor’s - there it is. Making cameo appearances are Eric Heimbigner (a bar patron playing pool) and Shorty stealing the scene as the bartender.

Fredia needs a new outfit for the party Hugh is throwing for their anniversary so she walk through Bellingham’s Old Town and shops in the original Wise Buys thrift store.

One of my favorite lines is when the cashier at Wise Buys (who had no idea that they were going to be in a film - everyone just showed up and the camera rolled) ask Fredia “May I help you” and Freda snaps back “I’m beyond it”.

The party is at Collin’s and Hugh’s apartment (the original Harmony School) and again features many local faces: Tina Rocker and Craig Wunder to name but two. After the party Collin must make his choice to stay with Hugh or leave with Fredia.

The film premiered in Washington DC and received all positive revues. The Bellingham premier was held at WWU and was a huge success. The film as picked up by Water Bearer films and released on VHS, but it was when the Blockbuster video chain ordered copies for all of their stores that the film gained true notoriety.

In 2003 Water Bearer released Hugh as a DVD and it is available online (see Amazon. com).⁂

The film is shot entirely in Whatcom County and has captured a slice of Bellingham that is long gone. Part of the film’s charm is in Randy’s camera work as he films Freda walking through Whatcom County and Bellingham. Totally unrehearsed Randy was able to capture many small detail that greatly enrich the film: a rabbit in the field, Freda feeding some cows, and the birds on the lake.

3RD Annual Worthy Party

Welcome to Whatcom County’s first continuous music festival that celebrates northwest artists! The mission of Worthy Fest is to envision and create a community driven festival of music, art, culture and the freedom of individual expression supporting Bellingham’s music and art scene. We are also striving to help bolster the struggling economy by inviting venders and craftsmen to come and support their individual arts with no cost to them, but we ask if profit is made venders give volunteer time. Our vision

is to establish a self sustaining annual musical festival that is recognized and respected by both audience and musicians, for its main goal to support the Pacific Northwest arts with minimal impact on the environment.

First off if you ever have been to a Worthy festival, THANK YOU!!!!! My name is Grady and I am fortunate to have friends in multiple tribes around this amazing music scene and what I mean by tribes is… well if you like all different walks of life, you can figure it out. We had a situation where we could support a brother that was looking at a debt to society for being judged for a small amount of marijuana. Our friends rallied together and created the Worthy 420 party in 2009 which was to tribute and support to a great guy, Bellingham arts, and music, and the start of something AMAZING!!!

With the help of Boogie Universal, Outdoor Gatherings, and cooperation with good friends at the Summer Meltdown I decided try it again in 2010. Last year we threw down two stages, one jam and folk, and the other electronic, on four acres of beach with camping.

We, thankfully due to some late bands, put on 27 ½ consecutive hours of music on both stages. Thus creating an opportunity to continue Bellingham’s first continuous music festival! Please feel free to take see look at YouTube monstarr787 worthy promo.

This year is going to be extra special. Not only are we going to have the lovely Betty Desire to MC the event (which is always a treat), but it will be a benefit for a wonderful local land trust called the River Farm which is being threatened by the erosion of a clear cutting situation. This situation needs awareness and support so proceeds this year will go to helping this self sustainable farm which is has a beautiful part of our little paradise we call Whatcom County.

We have a Bellinghamster all star line up this year. On the main stage will have local favorites Acorn Project, Vaughn Kreestoe (with special guest), Rise and Shine, Snug Harbor, Keeton Collective, the All StarMixup, and Mighty High just to name a few. And let’s not forget the Endorphins, Sweet Medicine and Savage Henry who have been a part of it since the beginning. On the electriconica stage local Djs Kai, Outbreak, Coop, Electric Angle, Loc Nos, Channel surfer, and Double Penetration that will be bringing the thump and womp, and that’s just the beginning.

So let’s get down to brass taxes. How much for the monkey? This year’s admission will be $25 for a day pass and $40 for the weekend.

This includes parking and camping privileges. The event will be April 22 and 23 at a local venue that will be announced one week before the event. This will be an outdoor event rain or shine. Transgender: What’s in a Name?

As president of the Washington Gender Alliance (www.

WashingtonGenderAlliance.com), I’m often asked to speak to groups and schools about issues of gender identity and expression. At some point, the definition of transgender often comes up. This used to be a pretty simple question to answer. Alas, it has become increasingly difficult.

As the gender community becomes larger and more visible, it seems everyone has their own idea about what is and is not acceptable, labels and definitions, and who should and should not be “lumped” together into a community.

Once again, it never fails to amaze me that no matter how small a group is, they find a way to subdivide it further.

Of course everybody should have the right to define themselves. Unfortunately, some people seem intent on defining others as well. And given that so many members of the LGBT community are subjected to the judgments of others,

Transgender has come to be understood as an umbrella term for all gender variant people, including transsexuals, genderqueers, and cross-dressers, among others. It had been originally coined to define a group of people who didn’t feel that the label transsexual applied to them, usually because they aren’t interested in having surgery. They often live as their true gender full time, or almost full time – everywhere but work.

There are transsexuals (people who want to alter their bodies so they come into alignment with their true gender identity) who prefer the term transgender. Some believe it’s less sensational, more apt, or more inclusive. There are transsexuals who will be angered and insulted to be called transgender. There are actually transgender people who will consider you hateful and transphobic if you call them transgendered. And there are transgendered people who will consider you hateful and transphobic if you call them transgender. Scared yet?

There are transsexuals who become incensed if you call yourself a transsexual if they don’t consider you one. And if they’ve already had surgery, there are transsexuals who don’t consider themselves transsexual; at least not anymore. I could go on.

The good news is that most of the people with these creative viewpoints seem to exist online only. At least I haven’t met any in person. The bad news is that they confuse everyone, and serve to alienate allies, and splinter what there is of a trans community in addition to the greater LGBT community.

There are already queer people who don’t get why the T is included with the LGBs, and think that by being inclusive, they’re being held back from getting their rights. Well, there are trans people who have at least as big an issue being associated with gays. And while both of these types are being particular and persnickety, the right wing hates them all, and doesn’t see a dime’s worth a difference between them. Nor do they care to know. They see gay people as gender outlaws, and trans people as… well, fags. (Don’t ask them about FTMs. They don’t “exist”; and if they did, they’d blow their minds) Most trans people who do not bloviate on blogs realize that even if you don’t have the right vocabulary, if your heart is in the right place, and you’re respectful and willing to learn, that you aren’t Evil Incarnate. Of course to an ideologue, even your trans status will not protect you from the bloviating. But most trans people are not ideologues, and are just trying to get by day by day. Transgender is just a rose by any other name.⁂

Why Rally?

Saturday, March 19 on the final day of winter, over 400 people came together to show their support for their community. Carrying signs and wearing pink, they cheered and waved in front of Mt Baker Planned Parenthood for over an hour. Old, young, gay, straight, people of faith and atheists, they spoke with one voice: We stand with Planned Parenthood.

Maybe it’s Egypt, maybe Wisconsin, or maybe a little of both. But folks are waking up. When the rights of workers to fair treatment, , the right for all people, (yes, even Muslims) to be respected and not persecuted for their beliefs, and the right for each and every adult to have a healthy, active and safe sexuality is threatened, it’s time to do something about this.

A young woman approached me with frustration after the rally. She was concerned about losing all the positive energy, about folks who came and cheered, only to disperse to their homes, their televisions, their lives. What should we be doing? How can we make a difference? How do we make people rise up?

A rally is an uprising and its benefits are numerous. First, we emerge from the isolation and fear arising from the corporate-driven media that tells us how hopeless our situation is each day—when it’s not focusing on Lindsay Lohan or Charlie Sheen. We see other faces, smiling and full of hope, and know the power of community and common beliefs. Beliefs like dignity, and the right of each of us to make the decisions we need for our best lives.

Second, we communicate. We reach out to each other and share our views. Meet and make connections with people who have a common goal, but with whom we may never have crossed paths otherwise. We also communicate to our community—by drawing attention that needed services are under attack, but also that those services are wanted W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M

and that the community stands together on this issue.

on our well-being, we stay indoors. Not only do we stand to lose services like birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, pap smears, vasectomies, HIV and STD testing and treatment, but we lose our voices, our community, our connections. And the only people who are left waving signs and making a difference are those who do so with hatred.

Finally, we organize. During the rally, at least three other events were spontaneously created. Many people made donations to ensure that those who face the greatest hardships among us have somewhere to go. Others offered to volunteer, or write a letter to the editor. We move forward with renewed hope and stauncher allies and friends.

One minute, we’re celebrating the overturning of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (finally!), the next, we’re aghast as Republicans, elected on a platform of increasing jobs and fixing the economy, busily fight to preserve the Defense of Marriage Act instead.

Reproductive and LGBTQ justice are linked: the same people attack them both and for the same reasons.

They play upon hatred and fear of sexuality and upon people’s fear of the different, of outsiders.

They use church doctrine like a bludgeon, often disbelieving it themselves.

They know that by rallying the hatred and fear of the far right, they vastly improve their chances of reelection.

Elizabeth Taylor Dies at 79

The world lost an icon, and the GLBT community a friend and advocate, as Dame Elizabeth Taylor passed away Wednesday, March 23, of congestive heart failure. Miss Taylor not only had a film career spanning 70 years with 50 films and two Oscars as Best Actress to her credit, but she led the charge in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, testifying before congress in search of adequate funding and research for a cure in 1986 when few celebrities understood that need, and fewer were willing to risk their careers to help. She was involved in the forming of AMFAR (The American Foundation for AIDS Research), as well as heading her own Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.â ‚

We are one of the oldest victim advocacy agencies in the nation. Our mission is to support and advocate for victims of crime, adult missing persons, and their loved ones, and to provide education about victims’ rights and services.

Allen Barra’s INVENTING WYATT EARP (Carroll & Graf, 1998) details Earp’s time in Hollywood (he died there in 1929) as well as the films made about him. Walter Huston, George O’Brien, Buck Jones, and Errol Flynn all played pseudonymous Earps before the ‘real’ Wyatt Earp was finally played by Randolph Scott (!) in Allan Dwan’s FRONTIER MARSHAL (1939). Scott, at the time Cary Grant’s roommate, glances furtively at his Doc Holliday (Cesar Romero!) as they trot about Tombstone shoulder-to-shoulder in a hansom cab. Richard Dix was Wyatt in

TOMBSTONE (1942), Henry Fonda in MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946), and Burt Lancaster in GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL (1957). Leon Uris’ O.K. screenplay stressed agape (brotherly love) between Wyatt and Doc (Kirk Douglas). Most Earp films deal with the gunfight near (not at) the O.K. Corral, where the Earp brothers and Doc took on the McLaury brothers, the Clantons, and Billy Claiborne.

Meanwhile, in 1945, according to Edward Dmytryk’s autobiography, IT’S A HELL OF A LIFE BUT NOT A BAD LIVING (Times Books, 1978), Adrian Scott bought Richard Brooks’ postwar novel THE BRICK FOXHOLE for RKO, including a subplot on the “murder of a homosexual.”

John Howard Lawson for emasculating John Wexley’s script in CORNERED (1945), an earlier postwar noir, were soured on the Party, and fighting the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. The day after CROSSFIRE was released Dmytryk, along with 18 other “Hollywood leftists,” was handed a subpoena as an ‘Unfriendly Witness.’ Exiling himself for five years in England, his British GIVE US THIS DAY (1949) was boycotted successfully in the United States by the American Legion.

Returning, handcuffed, and then in a West Virginia federal prison, he thought of making a prison picture: “Nights were sometimes spooky,” recalling the noir lighting of CROSSFIRE. There was “of course, homosexuality,” but only between “two or three inmates and the prison chaplain” while “I put any thought of sex out of my mind and never discussed it.”

(He also mentions one autoerotic prisoner almost sent to a federal prison, the warden told him, “reserved almost exclusively for homosexuals.”) Having decided ratting was better than the Party’s unanimous vote procedure, he agreed to name Lawson, Scott, Jules Dassin and Joseph Losey, among others, before the committee. Losey, already in Italy, and Dassin, on the continent, never returned, and had distinguished European careers. Independent Stanley Kramer hired Dmytryk to direct four films, climaxing with THE CAINE MUTINY (1953). After seven more films, notably RAINTREE COUNTY (1956) and THE YOUNG LIONS (1957, both with Montgomery Clift), Dmytryk made his second western, WARLOCK (1958), from Oakley Hall’s Pulitzer prize-nominated novel.

In the novel, this error spirals Clay back into drug abuse and faro, and he keeps ending up drunk arm-in-arm with Tom: when Clay says he could once open with jacks, but now he needs kings, Tom thinks, rather, it should be queens.

The rather dispensable women reverse their characters, the demure Jessie, the ‘Angel of Warlock’ (Delores Michaels) saving Tom from a lynch mob in the novel, and falling for Clay; and Tom’s ex-whore Lily Dollar (whose recent companion, the brother of a man that Clay once killed, Tom murdered) falling for reformed Johnny Gannon (Widmark), now the Warlock sheriff.

Johnny reformed in disgust after the brothers stripped and painted themselves as Apaches to kill Mexicans whose cows they had rustled, and now receives quick-draw lessons from Clay. The second gunfight, in which the spurned Tom forces Clay to kill him, to save Clay’s reputation, Dmytryk claims is motivated by “misdirected love.”

In the novel Tom is rumored to possess “horns, trident, a spiky tail, and Blaisedell’s soul.”

And in the film, from their first night in Warlock, the pair shares a two-room suite over the Palace. Quinn describes the suite to Fonda: “There’s the parlor and here’s the bedroom,” but we do not see the bed(s), double or not. Later, they are accused of “sleeping on silk sheets from Paris” while cowboys sleep on sackcloth. “Many critics and viewers thought [the Clay-Tom Favoring “linear organization,” Dmytryk relationship] might be homosexual (a no-no at the time),” writes Dmytryk, finding the trimmed away the union dispute (unlike Elia Kazan, a Friendly Witness from the beginning, who made the 1954 anti-union ON THE WATERFRONT). In both novel and film, Clay leaves Warlock alone.

Corral gunfight, called in the novel the ‘Acme Corral.’ A footnote rumors that the first silver miner, after staking his claim, had “flown back, riding the handle of his shovel like a witch,” crying “Warlock, damn you!” – to a town soon terrorized
