Winter is coming, and with it a whole raft of amazing gigs in The Empire Music Hall. It’ll be cold outside, but with the crew behind PLEASUREDOME and NOW THE 90S playing an unprecedented three Saturday nights in a row, the dancefloor will be on fire! It’s the ultimate festive party experience, with two decades worth of Christmas hits in one explosive set. We’ve the best of touring bands Super Furry Animal GRUFF RHYS and DUKE SPECIAL on the bill. Indie Ledge LLOYD COLE has sold out, (again) and Beta Band alumnus STEVE MASON joins us with Pictish Trail. MADE IN LIVERPOOL celebrate 50 years of Abbey Road on their Empire debut and THE GROOVE LINE pay tribute to the Genius of Nile Rogers. The Empire Basement is always heaving with entertainment; free live music Tuesday to Sunday, and our ever-popular pub quiz thriving in its new Monday night slot. KEN HADDOCK'S Christmas parties move to the Music Hall for Boxing Day and SANTA will of course call by on the last Thursday before Christmas! Wishing joy to you from me this festive season. As always, I remain yours,

JOSHUA BURNSIDE

DIRTY DC

FRI 1 NOV | 7PM | £14

SAT 2 NOV | 8.30PM | £14

Sparkling local talent and Northern Ireland Music Prize winner JOSHUA BURNSIDE is kicking off a massive UK and Ireland tour in The Belfast Empire this Autumn.

We can’t get enough of AC/DC here in The Empire. That’s why we LOVE DIRTY DC – simply the best tribute to Australia’s biggest band about. And guess what? Sean Mulvihill, 'World Bon Scott impersonator competition winner', returns for their October date!

Described as “Rumbling, brooding, powerful, (and) magnetic” by the Irish Times, Burnside and his 6-piece band will be dipping into an enviable back catalogue of leftfield acoustica and twisted folk; combination that has already bewitched audiences from Glastonbury to the Cambridge Folk Festival. “There’s an indefinable quality and charm to Joshua Burnside” The Sunday Times. 6

Still going strong after 45 years AC/DC are responsible for some of the seminal albums of the whole genre of rock and roll. Dirty DC bring the love, that only true fans of the band have, to a high-octane hell-ride through the antipodean outfit’s back catalogue. From Thunderstruck to Rock and Roll Train, Dirty DC never fail to entertain. 7

PETERMARKATHON: STORIES OF STYLE & FASHION

LLOYD COLE

SUN 3 NOV | 7PM | £10

MON 4 NOV | 7.30PM | SOLD OUT

Peter Mark Belfast welcome two of the legends of the style scene, with the world-renowned Session Hairstylist Keith Harris and famed style consultant BILLY DIXON in conversation, with your enchanting compere SABRINA BEWITCHED tying the night together. Not one, but two standing ovations, was how KEITH HARRIS was revered by generations of hairdressers and industry figures at his recent No Limits presentation in London; a very personal look at the history of hair. A history of which Harris, points out, he has been part of for some 40 years. Billy Dixon, Ireland’s only professional Male Image consultant, has styled some of the world’s most powerful people. All proceeds on the night to ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY NI.

Don the turtleneck and pour yourself a cider and black; LLOYD COLE is back in town! Not only will Cole be performing tracks from this year’s new album Guesswork, he’ll also be dipping into a back catalogue of happy/sad classics like Perfect Skin, Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken and My Bag.

8

9

Absorbing the German influences of Bowie’s Low or Iggy Pop’s the Idiot, Cole’s new album is the sound of an artist growing old disgracefully, lifting some of the brutalism of those classic works and adding his signature dry wit and grace.

THU 7 NOV | 9PM | £3

WYNonA BLEACH NEALO VALIUM NICKCANTSLEEP WYNONA BLEACH got their name from an argument about how Wynona Ryder spells her name and Nirvana’s Bleach. And for those old enough to remember the Drop Nineteens’ greatest hit there’s more than enough woozy goodness to invoke the shoegazing gods of pre-Britpop 1990s. Support comes from NEALO, who dropped a sevenyear law career to become one of the preeminent names in Irish Hip-Hop. Blues Rock goodness from VALIUM and rap music from NICKCANTSLEEP. As always, pay on the door, as always, a bargain at three quid.

WED 4 DEC | 9PM | £3

SONs OF BURLAP ANDREW MCGIBBON ANJA AN AULD LAD Tapping into an ancient music tradition that marries the rhythmic and primal, and taking it to a place at once celebratory and mournful. Strings and flute combine to take you to a common ground of panEuropean folk music that is unmistakably SONS OF BURLAP. Few recordings are known, and video evidence is mysterious. Support comes from Bonnevilles mastermind ANDREW MCGIBBON, who is promising a side project that’s nothing like the Bonnevilles. Psychedelically inspired jazz vocalist ANJA and the appropriately named AN AULD LAD. 10

PEARL JEM SAT 9 NOV | 8.30PM | £13.50 Survivors sounds like damnation by faint praise, but when the band is Pearl Jam, and the context is the Seattle Grunge scene, it’s a miracle that they can still stand the sight of each other, never mind continue to release globally acclaimed records! PEARL JEM are Pearl Jam fans that play Pearl Jam songs for Pearl Jam fans, with an intimate knowledge of the back catalogue you can be guaranteed the greatest hits, the deep cuts and fan favourites to boot! Don the plaid... the spirit of Seattle is still Alive.

NEXT ROUND ENTERTAINMENT

LUCY SPRAGGAN

STEVE HOFSTETTER

SUN 10 NOV | 7PM | £16

THU 14 NOV | 8PM | £16+BKG

Lucy was always too good for the X-Factor. Sailing through the process in style, she brought her own songs to the table, competing with the other singers on her own terms. Forced to pull out, she nevertheless managed to release her own album hijacking the Top 40 with the well-received Join the Club.

STEVE HOFSTETTER is the hardest working man in showbusiness, with the possible exception of the late, great James Brown.

Not content to rest on her laurels, 2019 has seen her release her fifth studio album ‘Today Was A Good Day’, play Glastonbury and SXSW, tour Europe and Scandinavia with Melissa Etheridge, and complete her own US and UK headline tours before this autumnal runout. 12

The original writer for collegehumour.com, he’s written for sports, culture and comedy outlets, as well as releasing 6 albums and, if that wasn’t enough, plays hundreds upon hundreds of gigs annually on the US circuit. Join him on his biggest UK and Ireland tour to date, as he tells it like it is. If that’s alright with you, of course.

A NIGHT FOR CULL

SPRINGBREAK

FRI 15 NOV | 8PM | £15+BKG

SAT 16 NOV | 8.30PM | £12

It's been nearly two years since the Belfast music scene lost a star in Michael 'Cull' Cullen. On Friday 15th November, the Music Hall will play host to an incredible line up of music and comedy, hosted by local comedian DAVID ELLIOT. Irish folk legends and Empire Music Hall regulars THE RAPPAREES will feature on the bill and BT9’d PADDY RAFF will be making a guest appearance, alongside other acts to be announced.

Grab the keys to the Lamborghini, roll up your sports jacket sleeves and hit the marina – it’s time for SPRINGBREAK!

All proceeds will go on to raise money for TAHMI (Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues), Northern Ireland’s only activity and sports focused mental health charity. 14

The fashion, the tunes, the Keytars – SPRINGBREAK have all you need for the ultimate trip down Memory Lane. Imagine all your favourite 80s soundtrack classics in the one place. Dance All Night Long with Lionel Richie, let Toto take you to Africa, and Have the Time of Your Life with Jennifer Warner.

CABEYTU SHOWS EUROPE

THE CABEYTU BROTHERS

HATS OFF TO LED ZEPPELIN

FRI 22 NOV | 8.30PM | £18

SAT 23 NOV | 8.30PM | £13.50

Following last year’s monster, 'I saw them in Benidorm Tour', the Argentine duo have booked another massive jaunt, taking their little slice of the Costas to the clubs and theatres of the UK and Ireland.

It’s one of the finer titbits of Rock History. Led Zeppelin debuted the greatest rock song of all time, Stairway to Heaven, in 1970s Belfast. Hearsay records that it did not go down particularly well, with a bit of an exodus to the bar, but still.

CRISTIAN and DIEGO CABEYTU are legends on the Benidorm coast. People flock to their residency, drawn by tales of the two classically trained musicians who between them have mastered 15 different instruments and interpret the classics in their own unique way. It’s an unashamed party night and guaranteed to brighten up the dullest day! 18

HATS OFF TO LED ZEPPELIN seek to recreate that classic run of unstoppable albums that made Page, Plant and Co. the undisputed biggest band in the world. With authentic instruments, a Marshall sponsorship and the son of Peter Grant managing, you’ll see how they won the official title of 'UK’s Number 1 Zep Tribute'. 19

DUKE SPECIAL

BAND OF SKULLS

SUN 24 NOV | 7PM | £22.50

MON 25 NOV | 7.30PM | £20

The Duke and The Empire go hand in hand, with a long-shared history dating back to the days when Peter Wilson’s Vaudevillian art-rocker was little more than some eyeshadow and a dream.

It’s been ten years since the release of BAND OF SKULL’s pounding debut Baby Darling Dollface Honey, which established the English outfit a reputation of hard partying and harder blues – coming as it did in a post White Stripes/Black Keys environment, where Robert Johnson was as much an influence as The Stooges.

DUKE SPECIAL will be mining a particularly rich seam of songwriting gold for this very special retrospective concert, drawing from his well-received studio albums, works for theatre and poetry put to music. It wouldn’t be a night with the Duke without some surprises as well – watch this space for some very special guests.

20

Tunes like I Know What I Am, Patterns and Light of the Morning hit the listener like a sucker punch from the woman that gone and done you wrong, and with Band of Skulls playing the album in its entirety we’re going to party like its 2009! 21

STEVE MASON

WED 27 NOV | 7PM | £10.50+BKG

THU 28 NOV | 7.30PM | £22.50

No stranger to the Music Hall, we’re thrilled to see REBEKAH FITCH return!

The Beta Band were doomed from the minute Noel Gallagher called them the best band in the world. Until then, they had released the sublime 3 EPs and been quietly carving a reputation as a great live outfit. Then the twin monsters of hype and a poor relationship with the record label saw a split in 2004.

With the endorsement of Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, and Hot Press magazine who said, ‘REBEKAH FITCH has become something of a Northern Irish pop phenomenon’ the incredibly talented singer-songwriter will be playing her only local show this year in The Empire. With full band, and the innovative live looping that’s seen her in great demand, Rebekah is sure to mesmerise the audience in this homecoming gig. 24

STEVE MASON has never looked back, with his King Biscuit Time project and later solo work. He’s maintained his ear for a hook while maintaining his love of experiment; best seen on the epic Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time. Support from the amazing PICTISH TRAIL. 25

MICHELLE MCTERNAN

MADE IN LIVERPOOL

THE BON JOVI EXPERIENCE

FRI 29 NOV | 8.30PM | £14

SAT 30 NOV | 8.30PM | £12

It was 50 years ago, oh boy, when The Beatles released Abbey Road, which was to be the last album that they recorded before one of the most acrimonious splits in music history. Wildly ambitious and with the band falling apart it’s a miracle it was even finished, never mind that it was any good.

We keep booking them and you keep coming back for more? Why’s that? Is it the top end musicianship, authentic outfits and instruments? Well, that certainly helps. Is it the uncanny Tony, who is the dead spit of the man himself? Yep, big factor as well.

MADE IN LIVERPOOL will be making their Empire Music Hall debut with a celebration of what became one of The Beatles’ best regarded albums. The Cavern Club’s very own resident Beatles tribute will play the album in full, followed by a greatest hits set. 26

Is it all the above, with a massive dose of feel good anthems, bags of stage presence and an intimate connection to the songs that saw the BON JOVI EXPERIENCE play Jon Bon Jovi’s own birthday party? Well, you should come down and find out, dead or alive.

27

THE BJORN IDENTITY FRI 6 DEC | 8.30PM | £12 Knowing me, The Empire, knowing you, BJORN IDENTITY! Ahaaa!!! So who are THE BJORN IDENTITY? Only the UK and Ireland’s finest tribute to the Swedish four piece that helped define disco, soundtrack the seventies and possibly pulled your parents together. One of the few Abba tributes to play fully live, THE BJORN IDENTITY bring the show to the audience, with singalongs, handmade authentic costumes and audience interaction designed to put you slap bang in the middle of the show. Just don’t tell Theresa…

28

GRUFF RHYS WED 11 DEC | 7.30PM | £20 Fancy a bit of Welsh wizardry this Christmas season? Of course you do, which is why you should secure your tickets for Super Furry Animals front man and language enthusiast GRUFF RHYS. SFA were a band that could only be on Creation Records, combining an innate understanding of the absurd with a pop sensibility for the ages. Pang is Gruff’s latest solo outing combining the Welsh language, some lines of Zulu and an English title, recorded over a year and a half, under the watchful eye of South African electro type Muzi. It’s a paean to positivity, inspired in part by a visit to Paisley Park! 29

PLEASUREDOME 80S & NOW THE 90S CHRISTMAS CRACKER SHOWS SAT 7, 14, 21 DEC | 8.30PM | £12 Last Christmas, you came to the Empire for the PLEASUREDOME. This year, Maurice Jay and crew will give you something special, combining sets with NOW THE 90S for one big party extravaganza. You heard us, the best festive tunes from both the 80s and 90s in one place, over three consecutive Saturdays in the Empire Music Hall. From Wham’s Last Christmas, to East 17’s Stay, we’ll be breaking out the sleigh bells and mistletoe for what promises to be the ultimate office party.

RAISED ON ROCK

MARK LANEGAN

FRI 13 DEC | 8.30PM | £10

WED 18 DEC | 7.30PM | £26.50

RAISED ON ROCK are not your standard tribute band, rather a crack team of elite session musicians, assembled from the finest session musicians the heavy metal scene in Northern Ireland has to offer.

From his early days in the proto-grunge legends Screaming Trees through to collaborations with everyone from Queens of the Stone Age to Isobel Campbell, MARK LANEGAN has developed his own niche, with a voice rivalling Tom Waits and songwriting chops up there with Nick Cave’s.

With live experience that has taken in everyone from T’Pau to Thin Lizzy, it’s clear from the first chord that these guys know what they’re on about. Foreigner, Europe, Ozzy, Guns and Roses – Merry Riffmas, you filthy animal!

32

This is a rare opportunity to catch the old master in the intimacy of the Empire Music Hall, where he’ll be playing music from his extensive career, including this year’s acclaimed Somebody’s Knocking.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT: ROD STEWART TRIBUTE

THE GROOVE LINE

FRI 27 DEC | 8.30PM | £15

SAT 28 DEC | 9PM | £11.50 +BKG

Gentlemen prefer blondes – or do they? Sir Roderick David Stewart continues to pack the crowds in, still on tour at the fresh old age of 74. Since his early days as a member of the Jeff Beck Group and Faces, Rod the Mod has gone on to sell in excess of 120 million records, and headline the world’s biggest free concert in Brazil, in front of 3.5 million people.

THE GROOVE LINE were formed by Chic drummer Ralph Rolle, and local musician Phil Duffy with one intent – to get the people of Belfast and beyond up and dancing!

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT is a full 7-piece tribute to Rod Stewart, with an uncanny soundalike in the form of frontman Lee Hedley. With backing dancers, costume changes and the star quality to match, you’ll get all the razzmatazz you’d expect from a Stewart show! 38

Following an impromptu jam in June ’18 with members of Chic, THE GROOVE LINE have decided to bring you a concert celebrating the music of Nile Rogers, as well as a greatest hits set of disco and funk cuts through the decades. Madonna and Bowie, Daft Punk and Prince, the message is clear; we’re here to party, resistance is futile! 39
