I can’t believe how much spam I get on my email accounts. There must be two or 300 emails per day coming from China, US, Russia, Indonesia nowadays too, and from just about every part of the world. Delete, delete, delete, is the only course of action and it’s actually kind of painless. Yes, we send out our beat daily and the beat eblast every day too, but you know, they’re kinda handy, full of news and interesting things going on all over town. Stuff that you just might miss out on if you don’t receive those little gems of email blissness. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, get on line now to find out. Typing in and clicking beatmag.com/daily, should give you a moment’s insight as to what we do around here every morning of the week. So the high-season has come and gone in less than a blat of a proverbial eyelid, leaving most of us resembling washed up seals after a seagull feeding frenzy on a distant Tasmanian shore. Maybe not that cold, though I’m sure you get my point – everybody got so smashed. So August has gone and now we are looking at a very busy September on our doorstep. Check the Main Stage, Here Now and What’s On sections inside for all the details. Some words like and dislike from our VIP Members “We have lived in Bali for five years. We run a small boutique villa rental business, our guests are from all over the world, every month I make sure that each of my guests receives an updated copy of your magazine, it’s full of fantastic information, good reviews about restaurants visiting DJ’s, it’s a great compact size. I personally love the photographs taken at various events, always good fun to see if you recognize any one... please keep up the good work!!!” Lorraine. “What I like about this magazine is because even though this is a free mag, but I find the content is good and the way you design and sort each page is interesting. Eyecatching font with cool pictures make it more interesting. Things a bit dislike is that maybe most of the news you cover is about party and cafe or club which are quite expensive. How about if sometimes you cover quite reasonable price chill places..? Just an idea… Anggie” We would like to apologise to Centro department store for not stating the garments in a previous edition’s fashion shoot (TB 316) were available at Centro department store in Kuta.

Bali to be included on the V8 Supercars circuit

s c o o p

022

With the construction of a track near Denpasar already being discussed, a Bali consortium have approached the governing body of the hugely popular V8 Supercar circuit to request adding Bali to the calendar of races scheduled for the 2015 race season. A source for V8 Supercars has confirmed the request, and the signs look promising that Bali will be added to the ever growing global circuit. Authorities in Bali are backing the proposed scheme, with a Singapore based investment group slated to fund the project.

Sepultura releases Bali concert dates Brazillian metal band Sepultura has released their Asian tour dates after much anticipation by metal fans across the region. The band canceled its tour last year after the death of the grandmother of one of the bands manager. This year the band will have six shows in the region one in Malaysia and five in major Indonesian cities. Sepultura will perform at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Stadium in Denpasar on November 9. The Brazilian band has been a major force in the metal scene throughout the 90s and has been certified platinum in a number of countries. Prices for each of the shows have not been released so far, but the concert promoters, Sonic Horizon has assured fans that they will be affordable.

Fencing championship to be held in Bali Bali will soon be hosting the Asia Pacific fencing championship where athletes from around the region will compete in October of this year. The event will see around 500 athletes from Asian countries and Australia competing and has been confirmed by the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Bali. It is expected to bring a large number of people to Bali with coaches and family of athletes coming to enjoy the tournament as well as the island. It is also expected that the tournament will raise awareness for the sport of fencing which is considered underdeveloped on the island.

Something special is going down in Legian on September 6, it’s time for Vi Ai Pi to celebrate four years of administering endless entertainment for the masses. The big night will see some of the top artists in Indonesian dance scene like DJ Winky and DJ Kent Kryptonite (to name a few) get behind the decks to pump the heck out of everyone on the dance floor. Of course as in any vintage Vi Ai Pi bash hot models and sexy dancers will be joining in on the celebration.

The folks that managed to rid Carrefour of plastic bags are now after a bigger goal that everyone can get involved in. Yayasan Regenerasi’s first prong in the war against plastic waste is to offer economic incentives and pay scavengers a higher rate for recycled plastic eventually empowering them with the necessary skills to make even more cash through turning scavenged plastic into resellable bags. The yayasan will then buy back processed plastic in varying finished states. They are even holding a Treasure Hunt event on September 29 where participants can get involved in turning plastic waste into currency, for more information regarding the event, go to www.regeneratingbali.com

Tiefschwarz Sos Supper Club | wednesday 05 sEPT

Roots:

Originally from Germany, Tiefschwarz is made up of two brothers, Alexander “Ali” Schwarz and Sebanstian “Basti” Schwarz. The group officially was known as Tiefchwarz in 1996 in Stuttgart and with the consequent addition of producer Peter Hoff, began making tracks. Their name translates to “deep black” which exemplifies their love of deep house.

Sound:

Electro and deep house

Where you might have heard of them

www.beatmag.com

Their earliest release with a relatively known label was “Wave” under the Wave Music label way back in 1999 their first album was RAL9005 in 2001. Many of the duo’s tracks have been licensed out to major compilation albums including the Stereo Sushi series, Bugged Out!, Get Physical and Renaissance. Their more recent tracks have been played on many a deck, including those under the direct control of major names such as Ivan Smagghe, Touché, Sasha and Danny Howles. They’ve played at major clubs in Switzerland, Germany and Ibiza along with appearances in Miami, New York, Melbourne, Sydney, Amsterdam, Sarajevo, London, Antwerp and Stockholm.

Why see them

The duo has evolved their sound into a more edgy and gritty electro one which makes them dynamic. They’ve recently returned to their deep house roots and if you’re into that kind of stuff, these are the guys to see.

Paul Woolford pyramid | friday 7 sept

Roots:

Woolford grew in the not so sunny town of Leeds on an island known as Britain. During his childhood, the sound of the radio permeated the atmosphere around him which served as a gateway to the dark wretched world of music. It wasn’t long until he was hooked on collecting records and after that it was slippery slope to music addiction. He initially experimented with jazz infused beats with his friends before becoming a full blown DJ.

Sounds:

Dance, deep house

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard him

He’s perhaps best known for his 2005 smash hit “Erotic Disclosure” which was widely praised and replayed by many a top DJ. Erol Alkan described the track as “a modern day psyche record”. He has played in the top clubs around planet earth up to and including Chicago’s Smartbar, Paris’ The Mix, Manchester’s Sankeys & The Electric Chair, Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo’s Pacha, Riccione’s Cocorico, Dusseldorf’s Tribehouse, LA’s Avalon, Las Vegas’ Jet, Milan’s Amnesia, and Zurich’s Q Club. He was also awarded the best newcomer award in the 2006 Ibiza DJ Awards as well as being nominated for DJ Magazine’s “Best of British” award in 2007. He’s graced the cover of DJ Mag, One Week to Live, and IDJ.

Why see him

Woolford’s credentials seem rock solid and DJs of this caliber know how to rock the house and throw a pumping party. Catch him at Pyramid, a new club opening on Jalan Sunset for what looks to be a very big night for all who get involved.

Satoshi Fumi mint | saturday 8 sept

Roots:

Satoshi Fumi hails from Tokyo and professes a deep admiration to the Chicago, Detroit, and New York house movement in the 90’s. But during his learning years Fumi opened himself up to many different electronic styles which later helped to define his signature sound.

Sound:

Electronica, deep house, and techno.

Where you might have heard of him

In 2002 Fumi san received his first recognition as a producer when his track “Protlex” was released by renowned DC duo Deepdish on their Yoshitoshi Recordings. Later his “Dub Beatlex” mix was included in Desyn Masiello’s Symphonic (DJ Magazine) compilation and also on Phil K’s Balance 004 (EQ / Stomp) mix. As his production skill progresses, along came opportunities to collaborate with a number of celebrated names in the industry including Todd Terry, Kaito aka Hiroshi Watanabe, and Funk D’Void. Currently he is a resident for Sensual at the famous WOMB lounge in Tokyo.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

Satoshi Fumi is considered as the most promising young DJ and producer in Japan and well on his way to stardom. His incredible imagination and creativity enable him to penetrate musical barriers and come up with his own unique sound.

kid cudi potato head | saturday 8 sept Roots:

Born Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, Kid Cudi grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and is of mixed African-American, Mexican and Native American ancestry. He began to rap towards the end of his high school experience and was heavily inspired by alternative hip hop masters like A Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde. He soon moved to Brooklyn where he released a freely downloadable album named A Kid Named Cudi which managed pop up on Kanye West’s radar and subsequently appeared in and wrote songs on Kanye’s 2008 808s & Heartbreak album. From there, super stardom was only a heartbeat away.

Sounds:

Alternative hip hop, with heavy trip hop and rock influences.

Where you might have heard of him

www.beatmag.com

After appearing on 808s & Heartbreak, and writing one of the album’s seminal hits, “Heartless”, Cudi was branded as an up and coming artist to watch according to numerous sources like Rolling Stone, The Source, and the BBC. Cudi then released his debut album in 2009, Man on the Moon: The End of Day which managed to sell over a hundred thousand copies in its first week and had collaborations with Kanye West, MGMT, and Ratatat. It included the hit single “Day ‘n’ Nite” which is probably his best known and most successful track thus far. From there he collaborated with numerous artists appearing on albums by the likes of Snoop Dogg and Jay Z. Cudi released his second album in 2010 titled Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager which was eventually certified gold. He then ambitiously pursued a musical project eventually called WZRD in collaboration with Dot da Genius and started his own music label, Wicked Awesome Records. WZRD released their eponymous debut album which departed from Cudi’s earlier work and had a very distinct alternative rock sound influenced by ELO, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and Pink Floyd. It debuted at the number three spot on the Billboard 200.

Why see him

Kid Cudi has shown that he can evolve into just about anything he wants to be and sound good doing it too. All indications online say he’s a great live act, combine that with his seemingly endless scope and add the fact that he’s performing at Potatohead’s Summer Syndrome party and you have a recipe for total awesomeness. It should be noted that last year’s Summer Syndrome party has voted the best party of last year and this year’s strict costume policy makes this party a strong contender for best party this year.

Classixx Woo Bar@W Bali | sunday 09 sEPT

Roots:

Classixx consists of two guys based in LA who have four first names between the two of them. They are Michael David and Tyler Blake, middle school friends with a natural affinity towards music and such. In the early part of the millennium, David spent his time releasing music and playing guitar in a band while Blake was pursuing a musical education of sorts from Berklee. In 2005, David left his band and Blake left his educations behind, these two serendipitous events were the catalysts in the formation of Classixx.

Sound:

A blend of nu disco, new wave, funk, house, indie rock with some clever down temponess.

Where you might have heard of them

www.beatmag.com

Well, if you’ve ever had the pleasure of owning the W Symmetry CD, you’ll notice their most excellent remix of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania”. They are heavy in the remix side of things and all their work is ground breaking. They’ve remixed artists such as Mayer Hawthorne, Holy Ghost, Ladyhawke, Fischerspooner, Groove Armada, Yacht, Beni, Drop the Lime and Major Lazer. If you were in LA during the second half of the 2000s, you might have noticed the entire club music scene change from Euro banger electro to their brand of dynamic blend seen above in the sound section.

Why see them

These guys are the future of music. Their compositions are complex yet catchy and they’re able to play both rock hard sets as well as spin some down tempo very effectively. Go ahead and Youtube their collection of remixes, put on some earphones, turn up the volume and hear it for yourself.

Congorock HU’U bar | thursday 13 Sept Roots:

Congorock started out as Rocco Rampino, a kid from Lecce, Italy who listened to dance music and played guitar in a number of local punk bands in the late 90’s. He played classical piano at a young age, grew up liking all kinds of loud music but had a growing affinity to dance music which eventually took a hold of him when he moved out of his hometown after college. His extraordinary musical talent broke through when he began mixing vinyls, and later, producing tracks around the same time Italian electro house scene came to the forefront.

Sounds:

Tribal electronica

Where you might have heard of him

www.beatmag.com

Congorock’s North American tour in 2008 with MSTRKRFT brought him international exposure. He immediately followed it up with his first single Runark in 2009. Later his remixes for Fukkk Off, Djedjotronic, Nic Sarno, Romanthony, Favretto, and Blatta & Inesha earn him regular spots on fellow DJs’ playlists. As a producer Congorock hit it big with his monumental “Babylon”, released by Foolsgold in 2010. The 2010 remix of Mark Ronson and Boy George’s “Somebody to Love Me” solidified Congorock as one of the heavyweights in international dance scene.

Why see him

Why not? Congorock’s 2010 remix of Swedish House Mafia’s “One” turned the likes of Tiesto and Annie Mac into fans. David Guetta later jumped on the bandwagon after the “Somebody to Love Me” remix. Congorock also commands similar acknowledgement on the dance floor for his one-of-a-kind style and energy which saw him conquering new frontiers around the world.

Tanah Lot will be the scene of a jazz show you won’t want to miss. Along with the premium jazz acts, you’ll be in perhaps one of the most beautiful places on the island.

J

azz has always been about dialogue, a way to reach into one’s self and others. Perhaps for that reason Nirwana Bali Jazz Series (NBJS), which will be held on September 14 & 15, 2012, at Nirwana Bali Resort, Tanah Lot, Tabanan, will incorporate the country’s top jazz performers, social message, and natural beauty which will make for a one of a kind event.

www.beatmag.com

NBJS is organized by Bakrieland Hotels and Resorts together with Prime Time Jazz as the first installment of a series that will consistently feature big names of the industry. Most importantly NBJS will carry a special significance that resonates beyond the event. First and foremost it’s a token of appreciation towards Indonesian jazz musicians and their enormous contribution to the development of the music in the country. Indonesian jazz musicians of today are always on the look for a medium to express themselves. With the change in musical landscape and the emergence of new technology the needs have become more critical than ever. That’s why NBJS is bringing senior artist Idang Rasjidi and his band, the Idang Rasjidi syndicate, one of the brightest stars like Andien, and local jazz celebrity, such as Rio Sidik quartet on the same stage. There aren’t that many stones left unturned by Idang Rasjidi during his long career as jazz pianist. During his early years Rasjidi had the fortune of working closely with Indonesian masters such as Bubi Chen, the Maulana brothers, Ireng and Kiboud, and Abadi Soesman. Over the years Rasjidi grew into a musician and an entertainer who offered more than his delicate piano playing. He also developed a distinct trait

of mimicking the sound of different musical instruments with his voice that never fails to astonish his audience. On the other end of the spectrum there is Andieni Aisyah Haryadi, or Andien to her growing number of fans. Since the third grade, Andien has been a regular participant in singing competitions. When girls her age were busy rehearsing numbers from Whitney Houston’s catalogue, Andien chose to belt out “The Girl from Ipanema” over and over again. She made her first album at the tender age of 15. Two years later recognition of her talent came when she had the opportunity to work with some of the uppermost musicians like Indra Lesmana and Aksan Syuman. NBJS also serves as a platform for Bali’s own jazz veterans like Rio Sidik Quartet and Koko Harsoe Trio, both mainstays of the dynamic local music scene, to bring their art to wider audience. All of the performers will perform their original numbers and jam with one another. To see them together would certainly be a wonderful sight as jazz musicians are known to feed off each other in a constructive musical dialog. Others who will also benefit from the event are Yayasan Desa Beraban (the Beraban Village Foundation) who will receive a donation from Bakrieland Hotels and Resort to support the education of underprivileged children in the area. On top of that the setting of the beautiful Tanah Lot where the affair will take place will create a unique ambiance for the audience and one which can only be found on the island of the gods.

While it was hard to find a seat and the timing got a little bit out of whack, since most people arrived around sunset, the crowd, the setup, and above all, the DJs rocked it like never before. This year for the first time, the Day Party, with colourful dancers and props, went all the way to 11pm which kind of made it a Night Party too. But who was complaining? Hmmm, maybe the neighbours. After getting their free can of beer at the entrance, the fans went straight toward the stage to rock with Gigi, Naif, Ari Lasso, and DJ Riri. The show was opened by a very entertaining performance by Naif who featured Ari Lasso on some of their best numbers. Next up was a reunion performance by all past and present members of Gigi who headlined the night. The boys put out a collaborative performance worthy of their superstar status. It was without a doubt one of the classiest and most electrifying rock concerts that ever came to Kuta.

Dian Pratiwi All That Jazz, Bali Style

www.beatmag.com

D.P. Age forty seven, born in Jakarta, Indonesian, married and have six brothers and sisters. S.B. When did you start singing? D.P. When I was in primary school I was the lead singer in a choir vocal group that did school events. When I was 15 years old, I went to a jazz club on my birthday where I started singing and jamming and that led me to my professional career. I was picked up by legendary jazz guitarists Yopie Item and Ireng Maulana, and so there I was at 17 singing in Jakarta jazz clubs and international hotels, then came to Bali. Started

You may have seen Dian Pratiwi singing at Ryoshi in Seminyak or Bettlenut in Ubud or even in Candidasa’s Vincents recently. She was in town briefly and Salvador Bali caught up for a chat. singing in hotels, and from that I went to Holland and studied at the Hilversum Conservatory of Music and lived in Holland for six years. S.B. Who were your influences at that stage? D.P. After listening to Sarah Vaughn’s “Misty” for the first time I fell in love with jazz. The other great female singers were, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Randy Crawford, Aretha Franklin and Chaka Kahn.

S.B. Can we back track now to the early 90s and what was happening here musically in Bali? D.P Well not much was happening in the way of music, maybe two, three places at that time which had live music. I met Sagon Togasa of Ryoshi’s House of Music at Warung Tapas, which was the local hot spot and I was singing there. I had just come from Australia where again I was singing with big bands, Sagon is a big jazz enthusiast and definitely my number one fan, we discussed him opening up a jazz club, which he did eventually called the Blue Train on Legian. In the meantime, I started up a band with my brother, Yuri, who is a guitarist and we called the band Easy Money, later on we changed it to State of Mind, and played in whatever venue was available. S.B. So as it turns out you influenced Sagon to open the club? D.P. As I said, he was our biggest fan, but there weren’t many musicians around, my band consisted of my brother, Ito Kurdi on bass, Coco, another guitarist, Dan Adise from Australia, he was the saxophone player and Eddie, drummer from Saharaja. That was it. Later on I told Coco we needed a trumpet player, he said I’ve got it. It turned out to be his friend Rio Sidik, then came Eric Sondhy, but that was much later. S.B. So more or less you all educated each other musically? D.P. Yes, then I went to Holland and Germany touring, then back to Bali in 1996 and reestablished the band, then back to Germany until now, 2012 S.B. Thirteen years you’ve been gone, so now your back to show you can really dance. D.P. Actually I came back every year for short stints on holidays.

S.B. Have you recorded? D.P. Yes, with big bands, which I recorded here three years ago. For sure I will be doing my own compositions with my brother. Before that, it was all cover songs-jazz standards. S.B. Other than recording, do you have other future plans for Bali? D.P. One day I’m going to share my experiences and knowledge and open up a music school here, it’s needed and important. My brother Yuri has already started an underground jazz workshop for free called Retro, that’s in Sanur every Sunday afternoon. There they can learn theory, sing and play. Sadly the musicians here are not ready to go outside of Bali, it takes courage and discipline, here it’s paradise and you can do whatever you want, sleep all day. Out there, no way, so we need outside influence. The learning process is discipline, there are so many musicians here, lazy and spoiled. I know I’m repeating myself, but they think they can play every night the same songs and music, it’s a way to make money, wrong, that’s not what it’s about, practice, practice, practice. when your good, they come and find you. Okay, enough said. I will be leaving at the end of August until next year, but I’m planning to come back with something big, bringing my tour of big name musicians from Germany and Boston, these players are doing a tour in Serbia and Russia right now and I will be joining them there. Then here to Jakarta, Bandung, Malam, then Bali. What we have in mind for the tour name is, The Coming Home Tour.

087

f e a t u r e

S.B. Would you go as far as to say, even though you’ve learned from other musicians here, your fine tuning and learning your craft came from Europe? D.P. Very much so, discipline and playing with professionals, becoming a professional.

S.B. Would you be so kind as to name these musicians? D.P. The saxophone player is one of the most famous and respected names in Germany, Uwe Plath, from Boston is Ryan Carneux, the trumpet player, the pianist is Jakob from Germany. Caris, is a young woman who plays double bass, watch out for this one, then Nicolas, who is also young, on drums, so yeah, next year will be a very important year for me. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

www.beatmag.com

S.B. Can’t do better than those. So when did you actually become a professional? D.P. I moved to Bali in 1983 and won a singing competition hosted by Radio Television (RRI) Bali in 1984. From there my international career started in Perth, Australia where I performed together with Dirk Plummer Big Band, then back to Holland, and while I was there I won the Golden Tulip Award in Leiden. I then joined the North Sea Jazz Festival with Edwin Rutten Quartet in Denheg and the list goes on and on with Jazz groups and renowned musicians. Since 2006, I have been teaching jazz vocals up until now at the Glenn Bushman Jazz Academy in Germany.

Flying High in Bali It

seems there is always something new happening in Bali, and for those who enjoy an active lifestyle and want to feel the wind in their hair, while gaining a new skill, the High Flyers at Bali Dynasty, will scratch the itch for you. Designed for anyone from five to 65, the miniature flying trapeze is run by some experienced high flyers who have extensive experience both teaching and performing. Although at first, it doesn’t look that high, step on to the platform and things look quite different.

www.beatmag.com

A personal class will usually last an hour and will cost between $30 to $50, depending how often you want to train. The rig is imported from the US and for those who want to get technical, it is a Mini Volant Rig. While the tricks seem pretty simple at first glance, the group class we attended split themselves pretty early into those who could and those who couldn’t get it together. The instructors are great and take control pretty quickly. There are those who freaked the minute they stepped on to the platform, others who gave it a good try and kept at it and others who got it right away.

The classes can be one on one or, for more fun, done with a group. It’s not recommended after a few of those giant sundowner cocktails, as this is fairly challenging and if done properly, a good work out. Bali is an adventure playground for those who want to have a go. From surfing to attempting the higher levels at Treetops, to diving and cycling tours and now even canyoning has been introduced. Deep sea fishing and mountain climbing, the possibilities are endless for an adventure holiday in Bali. The High Flyers Trapeze ticks plenty of boxes because it’s close, you’re in good hands and it doesn’t take too long out of your day. If swinging in the wind appeals to you, or you’ve considered running off to join the circus and you don’t want to be a clown or a freak, this could be just the ticket. with Total Disregard For Your Arteries Food generally comes in two forms, the kind that will generally nourish and maintain your slowly decomposing body and the kind that will only accelerate your eventual death. As a rule of thumb, the latter usually tastes exponentially better than the former. With this in mind, we present you with three mind-blowingly delicious dishes that might require a healthy dose of defibrillator for desert.

Don’t get me wrong, roasted meat can be healthy. Babi guling can be considered healthy. But that statement is more than likely completely and utterly false. Is it delicious? Absolutely.

www.beatmag.com

What it is: Basically a pig chucked on a spit with a ton of Balinese spices thrown in. It’s immaculately cooked and different parts of the animal are harvested in a way where it looks like a bunch of different dishes… from the same animal. There’s meaty bits imbued with spices, crispy skin bits, sausage, deep fried fat, soup with boney meat and the absolutely best part… the gorengan. It’s basically deep fried meat with a similar texture to crispy bacon and looks orange. Pak Malen Jalan Sunset Road No. 5, Seminyak

Our take: This is about as great a hangover meal as it gets. Something about greasy succulent pork with rice just hits all the right buttons for instant satisfaction. The variety of ways different parts of the pig can be cooked adds a welcome divergency that delivers a different taste in every spoonful.

Ryoshi, being a Japanese restaurant, has plenty of extremely healthy menu items to choose from, their Cheese Age however, is not one of them. What it is: Basically breaded deep fried mozzarella cheese on a stick with very tangy Bulldog tonkatsu sauce on the side. It comes with cheese sticks which are perfectly deep fried where the cheese forms long sinuous strings every time you try to take a bite. The tangy sauce perfectly complements the cheese and every bite should be pre empted by a generous dip. Our take: Melted cheese just about has no equal when its savory goodness is dancing on your taste buds. Although it doesn’t qualify as a meal, the Cheese Age is an awesome appetizer and trying to limit yourself to one order can be pretty difficult at times.

This little hole in the wall is located on Jalan Legian between Jalan Rum Jungle and Padma. Chicken wings, being dark meat aren’t quite as healthy as the chicken breast but not that that matters.

Warung Bu Rudi Jalan Legian Tengah No. 436, Legian T. 756011

What it is: Deep fried chicken wings with one hell of a tasty mystery batter. Just ask for a portion of chicken wings and you’ll get three full wings (mini drumstick and wing) that are full of crispy goodness on the outside and tender deliciousness in the interior. The batter is what makes this sinful delight a true winner. Our Take: This works as both a meal and a snack depending on the size of your order. The fact that they serve the whole wing is a definite plus but be warned that the grease factor on this chicken can be extreme at times. The fact that the place is open until late at night makes this place pretty dangerous for those late night snackers out there.

Interview by Rudolf Dethu

Wis and his band, The Hydrant, are the pioneers of rockabilly in millennium-era Indonesia. His wilder-thanElvis music, Stray Cats-fuelled fashion and attitude, have inspired legions of new, young, and hip scenesters in this fertile country. He invented rockabilly here. Well, sort of.

f e a t u r e

096

Let’s go back in time. What an amazing change you’ve made, from progressive pop Toto-oriented Hydra, to Stray Cats-fuelled The Hydrant. Why did you decide on such a massive makeover? Hydra were a pop rock band which Zio (Brozio Orah) and I formed back in 1999 when we were at the same college. We made good songs which eventually impressed Sony Music Indonesia and they invited us to contribute a song for their legendary Indie Ten album compilation. As time went by we finally came to the conclusion that we didn’t have the same vision anymore. As a band and as a team. We decided to go our own ways. I remember one funny day, during this hiatus, I visited Bobby Kool (Superman Is Dead). He played me Stray Cat’s Blast Off!, saying that he didn’t like it that much. According to him it sounded a bit like a Kuta Top 40 pub band. On the contrary, I said, “Are you kidding me? This is amazing! This is such perfect music!” That moment I was truly inspired and said to myself: “I must form this kind of band! These guys have the sound, skills, style, attitude, everything!” Soon after that, in 2004, The Hydrant were born.

www.beatmag.com

At the time rockabilly—rockabilly revival, to be precise—wasn’t really a popular choice. No musician in Indonesia did it. How was the public reaction? When I wrote and composed The Hydrant’s music, I tried not to worry too much with the so-called Indonesian music industry and/or public perception. I was too busy making loud music (which I didn’t do in my previous band), too busy shining my shoes, too busy combing my hair, too busy cranking up my guitar. Amazingly, applying this who-cares attitude turned out great in building fan base. They loved our music, our style, our attitude even more! It didn’t take too long for rockabilly to become a trend! In 2007 you can say we were huge nationally, The Hydrant’s glory days. Not too long ago, you successfully convinced the biggest concert organiser in Slovakia to fly you over to play at a prestigious festival, Pohoda. Would you like to share some stories? Michal Kascak, the head honcho of Pohoda, which is the biggest music festival in Eastern Europe, sent me an email in November 2008, asking us whether we were interested in participating at his event. In early July 2009, Kascak, while he was on holiday in Bali, finally had a chance to see us playing live at Kuta Karnival. In late July 2009, The Hydrant were at Pohoda! Surprisingly, Europeans loved The Hydrant. In all three countries that we played (we also gigged in Austria and Czech) the public reaction was excellent. Who would’ve thought!

PS: In 2010 we were invited to play again at Pohoda. They offered to pay our return flights, but we couldn’t get sponsors to back up the rest of the requirements for an international tour. Sadly, we had to cancel the tour. You did sign up with one of the big five major labels in Indonesia but it didn’t seem to work out. What went on? We signed a contract with EMI Music Indonesia in 2007 and released a (way too) low-budget album, Rockabilly Live. The lack of promotion, minimum financial support and EMI’s internal problems, seemed to mean that the album didn’t work out as well as we had hoped for. We decided to go back indie again. It’s all good. Life goes on. Two members of The Hydrant decided to leave the band and pursue their own careers. How are their replacements working out? I have to admit, 2008 wasn’t the best year for The Hydrant. The major label deal didn’t go well, then Zio and Morris quit the band. Even though it was pretty stressful, Marshello and I refused to give up, we kept moving on. Shello found Christopper as the new drummer while I picked Adi as the new bassist. We are so happy with these decisions. The relationship between us and the ex-members, thank god, is still very ok. For instance, when Christopper was away for a few months, Morris happily replaced him temporarily. Let’s get personal, who are your favourite guitarists? Too many to mention! Same like other guitarcrazy kids I guess... I like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, and Richie Kotzen. But some names have a special place in my heart. Namely Django Reinhardt, Cliff Gallup, Chet Atkins and Brian Setzer. Those last four names have the look and also have the style. Name three of your all-time best albums and why?
Stray Cats’ Blast Off. Their most rockabilly album. Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Dirty Boogie. This album is always effective, I still get majorly excited every time I put it on. Wayne Hancock’s A Town Blues. I like Hank Williams. This one is the modern version of Hank. Any last nagging words? Hello parents in Indonesia, if you love your children and don’t want them to be consumers of rubbish, please spend a little money and sign up for cable TV.

My Starfish Bloo experience began with a breezy chat over an iced tea with Kevin about some of the new creations he’s added to the menu, before he sent out a selection of his favourites for myself and a friend to check out. First up from the starters were the Hand Harvested Diver Scallops with daikon puree, baby herbs, tobico and miso foam (100k++) – all hungrily scooped up and devoured individually on one spoon to let all of the subtleties of the puree and miso foam infuse with the tender white scallop meat. Next to set my tastebuds alight from the starters list was the Crispy Duck Salad (110k++), with masterstock caramel, Thai basil, coriander, mint and kaffir lime – all ready to be rolled up into soft savoury pancakes, kind of like an Asian burrito.

The Mars Volta

Noctourniquet

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

E

ver since fuzzy-haired rockers Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala disbanded At The Drive-In back in 2001 and reinvented themselves with a new group of hombres, The Mars Volta have been assaulting listeners with their distinctive brand of Latino-infused prog metal, with five critically acclaimed studio albums and a reputation for blistering live shows across the planet. Sounding bizarrely like a cross between Thom Yorke and Alex Turner during the quieter moments and like a banshee caught in a mantrap at others, lead singer Zavala continues his white-knuckle narration that (just) manages to hold the schizophrenic time signatures and mental drumming together. However with lyrics like “I am a mountain/Of cavernous people/Searching for a lighthouse in the fog”, making any sense of it all is a futile endeavour. As always with The Mars Volta though, you don’t necessarily have to understand what’s going on to enjoy it. According to Zavala, “The Volta is taken from a Federico Fellini book about his films, what he characterizes as a changing of scene, or a turnaround; a new scene to him is called Volta. Y’know, changing of time and the changeover”. Anyone familiar with their music will know that this is something of an understatement – in this case the album shifts gears so often between genres and contains such a cacophony of sound that if you were listening to it on vinyl, you’d be forgiven for thinking that your turntable motor was knackered. Either that or maybe the band have accidentally recorded themselves at sound check where everyone is bashing away out of kilter on their own respective instruments. Stick with it however, because just when you think it’s all falling apart it suddenly all clicks into place like a plane in freefall that suddenly finds its wings. “The Whip Hand” drops you in at the deep end with a dirty fuzz bass hook and suitably apt message; “I’m a land mine/don’t step on me”, and Lapotchka is a simmering space punk cry with skittering drums in the background and sinister pink floydish modulated overtones. Elsewhere “Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound” quietly broods with regret and “Trinkets of Pale Moon” sounds like a bad trip at the pasar. If nothing else Noctourniquet is not short of ideas and has the density of a neutron star that can be daunting at first, but don’t let the muddle put you off - keep listening because it’s an album to immerse yourself in. t was a truly epic day of good vibes at Canggu Beach on Saturday, with 23-year-old Ellis Ericson topping the field of 48 surfers that had come from near and from afar to surf together in celebration of the classic single fin surfboard at the second annual Good Vibrations Retro Classic.

The good vibes were felt from Canggu Beach down to Mantra in Petitinget from the early hours of Saturday morning until past midnight as surfing legends such as Terry Fitzgerald and Mitchell Rae, pro surfers Rob Machado, Rizal Tanjung and Marlon Gerber, musician-surfers Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, and Chad Butler from the band Switchfoot, Bali legends Made Lana from Uluwatu and Ketut Menda from Kuta and others with their families and friends from all over the world came together to honor and celebrate the roots of modern surfing at this unique surf gathering.

like ‘get out there, you’re in heat eight’, so I just got out there….I just kept powering and the heats just started turning over you know?” The 48 competitors were allowed to use only classic single fin retro surfboards and were not allowed to use a leg rope (leash), all in order to maintain the integrity and true spirit of the Good Vibrations event. Consequently, all surfboards had to be inspected and approved by Drifter’s Jake Mackenzie, Insight’s Mike Rommelse, and Mantra’s Tipi Jabrik before the competitors took to the water. The six-man final ended with Ellis in first, Jay Button second, Marlon Gerber third, Tipi Jabrik fourth, Chris “Cutch” McHutchison in fifth, and Rob Machado in sixth. In classic Drifter form Machado elected to spend the entire final down the beach at the Sand Bar rather than with the others at the river mouth righthander.

Winning the 30-minute six man final was nothing short of a dream come true for young Ellis, who hails from Byron Bay Australia and admits to being a retro addict who has done nothing but surf and shape single fin surfboards for the last four years. He has been hanging out around Canggu recently and clearly had both the place and his style dialed in to perfection on Saturday, after almost missing the event.

Each of the finalists received a custom made classic style Luke Studer single fin surfboard at the awards presentation held at the Mantra bar and restaurant later that evening platinum album selling San Diego-based band of surfing musicians that go by the name of Switchfoot. They had the crowd magnetized and singing along with every word from each song as front man Jon Foreman, and the rest of the band put on a high energy, emotionally charged, up-close-and-personal performance.

“The night before I send Jake a text telling him I wanted to be in the contest, but then ended up getting really drunk,” he admitted, somewhat embarrassed. “So I woke up this morning and like, ‘I’m not going in the contest but I’ll just go down there and say hello’. When I got there they were

A groovy and good time was had by all who attended the Good Vibrations event, and as Tipi Jabrik said afterwards, “I don’t know what we’re going to do next year to create a better event than this, it was so far beyond our expectations…but we’ll find a way to do it somehow…count on it!”

Flygrip

FlyGrip is an accessory that enables you to use your smartphone one-handed. I came up with the idea for FlyGrip after noticing how frustrating it was to rely on both hands when texting, surfing the web, or composing an email. With FlyGrip, you don’t have to worry about misclicking, fumbling, dropping your phone, and compromised reception due to the “death grip” issue. When not in use, FlyGrip snaps into place so your device can still fit in your pocket or purse. FlyGrip was engineered in response to the inherent difficulties with holding and navigating touchscreens with one hand and to repel members of the opposite sex at the same time. www.flygrip.com $29.95

Epson is back with its latest gadget in the form of the Epson E200. This wristwatch-type pulse monitor adopts the company’s advanced sensing technology and an Epson-made sensor to measure your pulse rate by contact with your wrist. The Epson E200 has an LCD screen that displays the amount of exercise required to achieve a fat-burning heart rate. The E200 takes advantage of the light-absorbing property of the hemoglobin in blood to measure the wearer’s heart rate. The monitor directs a harmless LED into the skin, and then uses lightabsorbing elements to measure the amount of light that is not absorbed by the hemoglobin and which is reflected back from inside the body. www.epson.com

The Home smoother

Cellulite

This is the home device that safely and painlessly smoothes and tightens dimpled skin caused by cellulite. Developed in France after 20 years of engineering research, the unit’s motorized rollers use gentle suction and massaging pulsations to stimulate fat metabolism. This activates lipolysis--the natural breakdown of fat cells-and boosts the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that contribute to elasticity. After six minutes of use four times a week, skin appears firmer and smoother, without the expense and hassle of repeat visits to an aesthetician. Ideal for use on the thighs and buttocks, the device includes five detachable heads of different widths for smoothing and tightening skin elsewhere on the body, including the delicate areas around the eyelid, lip, and neck. Plugs into AC. Includes five treatment heads, cleaning wipes, and 20 replacement filters. Or you could just excercise that fat ass away...www.hammacher.com $1,500

yoman Gunarsa is one of the wellknown painters in Bali who explores his works based on the Balinese arts, such as traditional dance and music, religious ceremonies, and Balinese environmental diversities. Born in the village of Banda, Klungkung in 1944, Nyoman Gunarsa is an admirable person. Besides being a painter, he is also a philosopher, teacher, architect, theorist, and a big supporter of Indonesian art. With his own fund, he finally built two museums that feature modern and classical Balinese life. Most of Gunarsa’s works are based on his inspiration of Balinese dancers and what he calls his painting style, space and motion. Usually painting with oil and watercolor, his works show

a freedom, either in the scratches or colors. He once said, “Through the irregular colors and scratches, the basic element in my painting is rhythm.” He is holding The First International Festival of Classical Balinese Painting at his own museum that showcases selected collections of Classical Balinese paintings from Kamasan, Klungkung. It is a great opportunity to know more about Balinese heritage. The event runs through to October 28, located at Museum Nyoman Gunarsa, Jl. Raya Banda 1, Klungkung Bali. T: (0366) 222 55
