The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gigguide. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.

It always surprises me how there are so few people around the bars and clubs during the week in this big city. I suppose the competition is rife and plenty of it, especially in restaurants, but you would think out with the millions of people living and working here, and the increasing wealth amongst the young people, there would be a handful more people to go around.

send name/address to: subscribe@beatmag.com and we’ll send you payment details.

Speaking of which The Beat Jakarta will be having a rather large party on a Thursday night soon at Red Square in Senayan to celebrate our overall 12th anniversary publishing the beat magazine in Indonesia. There will be DJ Milinka and DJ James Sullivan performing and a host of other things going on. We will give you more details in regard to that soon but one thing is for sure, we’ll be giving that Thursday night a good twist, come rain or shine.

Vertical Horizon Soundslike

Hails From

Alternative Rock

Washington, USA

Hard Rock Café | Tuesday 1 May | 10pm

Roots:

The band was formed in 1991 by a couple of students at Georgetown University by the name of Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane. During their college days, the band would play cover songs in the campus’ food court. After graduating, they moved to Boston and self released their first album, There and Back Again, in 1992. Vertical Horizon soon began touring and picked two more members becoming a four-piece band. They released three albums during the early days which sold 70,000 units combined.

Sounds:

Post grunge alternative rock.

Where You Might Have Heard THEm:

www.beatmag.com

The band shot to superstardom after a string of hits in their first major label album, Everything You Want. The eponymous track on the album became the 34th most played song on American radio in 2000. “You’re a God” was also an instant hit and was featured in the film Bruce Almighty and was additionally the 12th most played song on US radio stations. Perhaps their greatest single (in the mind of this writer) was “The Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)”. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Their future albums, Go and Burning Days also fared well, but were not on par with the wildly successful Everything You Want.

Why See THEm:

If you were alive in the early 2000s and you didn’t live in a cave, you’ve heard their songs before. If not, go to beatmag.com to hear them. They were a seminal band in those days and although their success peaked with one album, those hits are pure ear candy and their show at the Hard Rock is sure to be nostalgic for anyone who enjoys alternative rock.

Liquid Exchange Thursday 12 April

H

Band bernama The Little Jesse N The Shakers menggulirkan kenangan lama lewat lagu lagu era 70 – 80an yang dikemas apik dalam performanya. Fantastic!

Liquid Exchange changed musically for a moment with a band called The Little Jesse N The Shakers which brought back old memories through songs from the 70s and 80s. Jesse and company were playing music from legendary names like Johnny Cash and even played an instrumental version of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. Their first appearance at Liquid Exchange was a bit of a shock for some of the younger audience that was unfamiliar with these prehistoric tunes but some of the older crowd were getting into it.

After a five-year hiatus form film, Richard has finally finished a new movie, Description Without Place, which is set in Bali with Happy Salma, Sausan, JRX SID and Hamish Daud in the leading roles. Currently, as Richard said, the film is finding its fate in various international film festivals. He hopes it’ll be selected in a few. He has also recently started The Reading Room, a book lounge with a screening room “so the plate is quite full for the time being”.

What music are you into at the moment? All this month, three songs seem to have taken possession of me: James Morrison’s “In My Dreams” and Jason Mraz’s “The World As I See It” and “I Won’t Give Up”.

Why? I love the Smashing Pumpkins’ double-disc album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I also love “1979”. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Too many to want to remember.

Something for everyone Despite Jakarta’s shortcomings, most newcomers find a suitable niche in the capital

Y

ou may have read recently that Jakarta did not rate too highly as a city in which to live in a global survey of Asian and Western expatriates by business consulting firm ECA International. Asians ranked the capital 195th in the world and 38th in Asia while Westerners placed it in 229th position globally. The city got a thumbs-down for air quality, availability of health facilities and personal security but scored strongly on availability of goods and services, access to international media plus availability of expat-standard housing and schooling options. If you’re already living here you’ll no doubt be making the best of your current situation, but pause for a moment to consider the options available. Jakarta is a huge city and so the choices are many. Where you live will normally be determined by location of workplace but if you’re lucky enough to work mainly from home via telecommunications media you might be able to choose from a wider range of options.

www.beatmag.com

The initial decision will likely be whether to opt for a house or apartment. If you have young children, then a property that comes with its own garden is a no-brainer but security could be an issue if you’re often away on long weekends and other times. Apartments are more secure and are often in strategic locations, very close to offices and leisure-time facilities. Jakarta province (DKI) is subdivided into five districts (six if you include Pulau Seribu, the offshore “Thousand Islands”, which became a district in their own right in 2000) but the quirky boundaries can sometimes mean that a particular place does not lie within the district you might logically expect it to be. For example, Senayan is in Central Jakarta rather than South, Epicentrum/ Taman Rasuna is in South Jakarta, not Central, and Kota is in West Jakarta, not North.

Guides that list specific apartments or housing complexes exist elsewhere, while a short article like this can only provide a thumbnail impression of what each district is like. Here’s a brief rundown of the relative merits of Jakarta’s districts:

West: If you travel abroad a lot, this is the place to be due to its closer proximity to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. It’s also good if you enjoy the resorts on Java’s west coast like Carita and Anyer. Taman Anggrek, Central Park and Ciputra Malls provide a wide choice of shopping options while Kota has long been a magnet for the city’s raunchier nightlife.

Central: You’ll be right in the heart of the city where it all happens. Be prepared to put up with a lot of traffic congestion (and poor air quality) on work days. Jakarta Fairground at Kemayoran (not in North Jakarta, as many might assume) is where some of the city’s major events are held, like the annual Java Jazz festival, for example.

Jakarta’s districts are many and varied and have provided shelter to newcomers (both local and expat) over many decades. One thing is common to all though: As the city lurches inexorably towards traffic gridlock, travelling from one district to another is likely to become more difficult with each passing year. (Jim Read)

North: If your work involves making trips to Tanjung Priok port, then this is the district for you. It also includes Kelapa Gading, where a wide range of shopping and housing options are available. If you’re a pork-eater, the concentration of ChineseIndonesians here (and in some parts of West Jakarta) ensures there are plenty of food outlets around selling this type of food.

041

f e a t u r e

Thousand Islands: Unless you have strong Robinson Crusoe-like tendencies, not really a serious contender as a place to live due to its remoteness. However, at weekends and holiday times it serves as Jakarta’s very own tourist playground for beach and water-based recreation.

Soekarno Hatta Tanjung Priok

NORTH JAKARTA Ciputra Mall Taman Anggrek Central Park

Kota Tua

PRJ Monas Kemayoran Park HI Roundabout

WEST JAKARTA

Kelapa Gading

CENTRAL JAKARTA Pulogadung

Halim Airport

EAST JAKARTA Blok M Kemang

South: This is where most expats live and where most of the international schools can be found. The district has some very pleasant enclaves like Brawijaya with its wide, tree-lined avenues and bohemian but always-busy Kemang, Jakarta’s version of New York’s Soho or Bali’s Seminyak.

East: This district probably houses the lowest proportion of expatriates, with a correspondingly reduced range of dining and drinking venues. It’s handy if you work in the industrial area of Bekasi, just beyond the DKI boundary, and also if you like to get away to points eastwards (like Bandung). It’s also the location of Halim Perdana Kusuma, Jakarta’s second airport. It handles a lot of charter and special flights: For example, when President Obama visited Indonesia in November 2010, this is where Air Force One landed.

ver had that feeling where you wished you can just run free without any other thoughts flying through your head? Here’s something you can try once in a while, Parkour. Parkour was originally discovered by a Frenchman, David Belle, who made it very clear that this new type of sport can really open your mind to dynamic things like focusing on efficient movement on or around obstacles. He strongly believes that we are able to conquer all obstacles if we really concentrate on it. It focuses on fluid movement such as running, jumping and even flipping. This freestyle sports has already marked its place in Jakarta, and has tons of people trying it for fun. Strolling around Senayan, I met one of the co-founders of Parkour in Jakarta, Subhan, and asked him about what inspired him to actually try this ridiculous new sport. He told me at first, it was basically something he thought would be fun to do to overcome himself, face his own fear and being able to think and act quickly through an obstacle. Basic rules of Parkour is concentration and not having a single iota of fear running through

your veins. You have to have the courage to go airborne over obstacles. Pros will be able to jump high and cross over fences, and beginners... not so much. So if you ever feel like trying something new and exciting. Come out to Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta’s soccer stadium in Senayan, and meet up with Subhan to practice in a groups of six or try and practice Monday nights around 7pm and have some fun! Tarot, a very well-known form of fortune telling, reads the mystical, spiritual world we live in. It’s been around since the 1600s and Europe was the first pioneer in introducing Tarot and the Gypsies, the heathens that they were, made it very popular throughout history. Nowadays tarot card readers have been blooming more and more in Jakarta as they have become a guilty pleasure to enjoy. One of the many tarot readers, Deniya tells me how most Jakartans seek instant answers to their bewildering questions of life, such as relationships, their careers and what the future holds for them. Deniya accurately describes how the people of Jakarta as a pretty shallow lot and stress makes them come to tarot readers as a new form of entertainment to enjoy and share with their loved ones. Some may take them seriously; some would do it because they’ve run out of

things to talk about. For me, it was just for fun, and it could also give me a few ideas of what I have to do in order to set my life straight. For Deniya, she has found though tarot reading as her occupation lets her meet people from many different levels of society. With her skills, she has often developed deep and close friendships in the process of helping others figure out what to do with their lives. From the working class to celebrities living in Jakarta, she has made her own network of friends for her need to learn more about people. S o if you feel curious and want to know what’s it like to have your tarot cards read, then just contact Deniya. Don’t get too serious though, cause basically in the end, you’re the one who leads your own life and knows what is best for you... but it is fun giving it a go.

Perhaps what these 12 youngsters meant with this “Dancing with Bach” is to dance with Bach melodies. Amatta Mirandari Hardjanto, Andhanu Candana, Eunice Sukarto, Felisien, Jennifer Chrysantha Salim, Kesia Gunawan, Luqman Taufiqrrahman, Mahdiyya Satya Damayanti, Randy Ryan, Selly Ongkowijoyo, Stephanie Onggowinoto and Valencia are great up-and-coming Indonesian pianists who study at Jakarta Conservatory of Music – a prestigious music institution that produces great and talented musicians. Aiming to be great pianist, some of them such as Randy Yan and Stephanie Onggowinoto have actually been building their credentials for a few years now. In this interesting piano concert, all 12 of them are planning to perform Bach’s renowned French Suites and Partitas. The French Suites

The other program in this concert, Bach’s Partitas, are a set of six harpsichord suites and considered among the last of his keyboard suites to be composed. In keeping with nineteenth century naming tradition that labeled Bach’s first set of suites in English and the second in French, the Partitas are sometimes referred to as the German suites, though there is nothing particularly German about them. Unlike the other suites, The Partitas feature a number of different opening styles including an ornamental overture and a toccata. Bach’s music has motivated many musicians over centuries and inspired even great composers such as Beethoven and Mozart. When Mozart heard one of Bach’s hymns, he said, “Thank God! I learned something absolutely new!” His music and legacy continue to exist and inspire many more including this group of young pianists from Jakarta Conservatory of Music. Throughout such a demanding program, all these 12 young pianists will be challenged not only to show their perfect technique but also their musicality.

As one of the greatest composers of all time, Bach has created an enormous volume of work but never dancing pieces. He instead focuses on serious works such as concertos, cantatas, partitas and organ pieces. Unfortunately like many other composers, his greatness was only realized after his death.

are six suites that Bach wrote for clavier (or harpsichord). The name ‘French’ was later added as a means of contrast with the English Suites (whose title is likewise a later appellation).

Let us all witness this future and past greatness.

Gillian Welch

The Harrow and the Harvest

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

It’s often said that the best musicians live in their own worlds, so with that in mind, it would be safe to say that New York-born country chanteuse Gillian Welch and fingerpickin’ sidekick extraordinaire David Rawlins are probably sitting on some Mississippi porch rocking chairs right now, in a scene straight out of the Coen Borthers’ classic O Brother, Where Art Thou? Sticking resolutely to the formula that has made them country pin-ups since 1996’s Revival, The Harrow and the Harvest gently drifts through bluegrass, folk and country blues as easily as the wind through the pines, with only the effortlessly sparse alto of Welch’s backwoods holler and two guitars doing all the work. On the surface it’s the kind of stuff you’d expect to hear spilling out of the Waltons’ gramophone just after church on a Sunday, but the melancholy harmonies and surprisingly dark lyrics soon conjure up a laudanum-soaked world of sepia-tinted memories and dustbowl vignettes. Some girls are as bright as the morning/and some are blessed with a dark turn of mind coos, Welch, with a kind of maudlin vocals, leave you in no doubt as to which camp she falls into. They threw me out of Sunday school when I was nine she then confesses on “Tennessee” – not quite up there with Amy Winehouse just yet I grant you, but doubtlessly already on the slippery slope to a life of whiskey drinkin’ and gambling vices amidst a world of god fearin’, clean livin’ folks. There are moments of cautious upbeat optimism such as the banjo-driven “Six White Horses”, but it’s the more sinister tracks that really affect, like album opener “Scarlett Town” and wistful ditty “The Way it Will Be”. However, despite the doom and gloom the overall impact of The Harrow and the Harvest is of uplifting nostalgia for a bygone age of Americana that seems increasingly distant, so pull up a chair on the porch and prepare to get engrossed. ocated at the Setiabudi One Building in Kuningan, Kedai Penang serves (mostly) Malaysian favorites. Since Malaysian cuisine reflects the multicultural aspects of Malaysia, there are some other influences from neighboring countries such as Thailand and of course, Indonesia. Just like most pan-Asian cuisine, spices, aromatic herbs and roots are all widely used in Malaysian food.

The Two-Style Kailan (34.8k) was our choice of greens. It consists of tasty, garlicky stir fried kailans, and also deep fried ones, accented with ikan bilis (anchovies). Who would’ve thought that vegetables can be so crunchy and yummy? We also ordered the Special Penang Fried Rice (32.4k). The always delicious fried rice is served with fried chicken, eggs, prawns, acar pickles, and some emping crackers.

Kedai Penang opened in February this year. But judging at the weekday lunchtime crowd, it has become a firm favorite for the office workers nearby. We recently visited them on a more relaxed early Sunday evening.

The Mie Goreng Mamak (38.4k) is another noteworthy dish here. This is a Mamak or Indian Muslim’s take on fried noodles. The yellow egg noodles are stir fried with meat, egg, vegetables, tomato ketchup, and spices, giving this fried noodle dish a distinctly unique Indian flavor. The interior is simple, with subtle touches The flavor is so scrumptious that it has quickly of Malay culture here and there. The plate was centered with a scoop of fragrant coconut rice and is accompanied by assorted delicious sides such eggs, meats, veggies, and a sambal to die for! Don’t forget the Fish Head We started with the Mango Salad (33.6k). Okay, Curry (69k). A unique dish where the head of a so it’s more Thai than Malay, but we couldn’t fish (in this case, a grouper), is semi-stewed in a resist having it to begin our meal. As for dessert Now to the mains. The Penang Curry Laksa the Durian Cendol (26k) and the Penang Bubur (28.4k) is the most popular dish here and it’s Cha Cha (23k) will definitely sweeten your day! easy to see why. The owners want to serve Malay or Melayu food, because of its familiarity with local taste. But with a Head Chef that was trained in Malaysia, you know that Kedai Penang wants to be as authentic as possible.

DUNHILL

challenged three talented chefs to create a unique culinary experience on 26 April 2012 in Social House. ‘Change’ was the Dunhill theme and Chef Tristan Balian from Social House, Chef Adhika Maxi from Union and Chef Bara Pattiradjawane, a self professed TV chef, collaborated on the synergy of change that features the three hallmarks of DUNHILL MILD - More, Fine Cut and Reloc. Australian Chef Tristan Balian kicked off the culinary journey with Cauliflower Soup with 20 seasonings and Pan Seared Sea Bass as the two entrées. Both these dishes were styled to represent the concept of ‘More’ and that’s exactly what they had, more of everything, including taste, seasoning and size. The Sea Bass in particular was a delight in every way and a total taste sensation. ‘More’ is in relation to the new brand of Dunhill Mild containing more cigarettes inside. Chef Andhika Maxi jumped at the chance of expressing his theme of ‘Fine Cut’ by way of slices of marbled wagyu beef complimented by potato

puree, sauté mushroom and concluded with fresh asparagus. His secret mayonnaise came in a small tooth paste tube for guests to add as they pleased. While there may have been a little too much sauce for my liking the fine cut beef just melted in your mouth. The Dunhill Mild uses a finely cut tobacco and kretek (cloves) tobacco. Using the finest Indonesian spices, Chef Bara Pattiradhjawane served a plate of 3 types of dessert. This one almost stole the show and especially the Belgian chocolate sauce infused with cloves to go with the profiterole. The dessert dish also included Panna Cotta served with Italian Strawberry Sauce, covered with a slice of chocolate, and Caramelized Ambon Walnut perfumed with clove, cinnamon, ginger and white pepper in a small box made from icing. “I serve on a plate with the “Reloc” technology to protect the quality of the dish,” Bara commented. Reloc refers to the reusable seal inside the Dunhill packet of cigarettes. It was a fun concept and executed to perfection. Feel the ‘Change’

The upper crust of Parisian society is swayed by a master manipulator, an unlikely band of superheroes must fight aliens with strength and wit, and a vampire emerges from the grave to protect his family. Sounds like random fun, which one is right for you, read on. Schedules are at www. blitzmegaplex.com & www.21cineplex.com

Bel Ami Drama. Directors: Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod. Writers: Rachel Bennette. Cast: Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Colm Meaney. Bel Ami tells the chronicles of a poor young former soldier, Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson), in Paris during the 1890’s.Using his wits and powers of seduction and manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women, he rises to opulence. Based on the provocative 19th century author Guy de Maupassant’s novel, this film is full of sensual drama, conflict in the bourgeois society of Paris and pretty faces, both the male and female. Careful not to seduce the stranger sitting beside you in the cinema!

The Avengers Action, Adventure. Director: Joss Whedon. Writer: Zak Penn. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Rufallo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson.

Having been one of the most anticipated films this year, “The Avengers” is said to be one of the most spectacular superhero action-fantasy movies ever. With a cool cast playing legendary superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and the Black Widow, you wouldn’t expect any less than a fun fairground ride-shiny, noisy and exhilarating. Worry not if you think it might be dull, because writers Whedon and Penn will serve you just the right dose of comedy through witty dialogues. Dress as your favorite avenger hero and hop into the IMAX theatre this May in XXI Gandaria City, Jakarta!

Dark Shadows Comedy, Horror. Director: Tim Burton. Writers: Seth GrahameSmith, John August. Cast: Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe G. Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter. Breaking the heart of a witch, a rich and powerful playboy, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp, Pirates of Carribean) was doomed to a fate worse than death-turning into a vampire and being buried alive. Two centuries later, he is set free and returns to his ancestral home where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. With the dark-style of renowned director Tim Burton exercising a familydrama comedy into a vampire-themed movie, you can at least bet your popcorn that this is a film worth your two hours in the cinema!

HOW TO HELP YOUR SKIN IN FACING AGING &

UNHEALTHY SIGNS By: Rizka Agustina

A

ging is one word that haunts everyone, especially women. That’s why, when I got invited to the Vaseline media discussion day with Dr. Shannaz Nadia Yusharyahya, SpKK to speak about the right treatment to make our skin healthy, I kept my eyes and ears, wrinkles and crow’s feet open. But before we think of the treatment, it’s important for us to determine whether our skin is healthy or not.

www.beatmag.com

How to tell that your skin is healthy or not? •Healthy skin should have: moisturized, soft, smooth, tight, able to regenerate itself every 28 days and have an even tone. •Unhealthy skin usually has any of these signs: looks dull, feels rough, dry, unelastic, has hyperpigmentation spots, visible veins or looks like a mountain range full of erupting volcanoes. Here are the examples of both healthy and unhealthy skin. The picture on bottom shows healthy skin while the top picture shows a woman with aging skin apparent on her hand.

As we age, the condition of our skin will deteriorate. How do you think your skin’s condition would be at the different stages? •In your 20s, skin is at its golden moment. It’s when moisture level of the skin reaches its best condition, as well as elasticity and tone. •As we enter our 30’s, aging signs start to appear. Wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, hyperpigmentation and dullness are found on the skin. It is because the skin regeneration process is getting slow. In the pictures below, we can see how skin appearance and texture change as we get older.

new stratum corneum and collagen; Vitamin B3 to reduce pigmentation and increase the natural emollient of the skin; antioxidants to fight harmful free radicals, prevent wrinkles and fix skintone and texture. •Always use sunscreen before being exposed to sun •Treat our facial and body skin equally. Women care much about their facial skin but they often neglect skin of their body. •Eat food that contains antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables. The more colorful food we eat, the more antioxidant beneficial to skin that we get. •Keeping up healthy lifestyle, avoid stress, unhealthy food or beverage, and don’t forget to have enough sleep.

s t y l e

063

Perhaps it isn’t the first time you’ve heard about the tips above, but let’s memorize them and start giving the right treatment to our skin, not only for your face but also for your body. That’s why Vaseline comes with different type of products, but my current favorite is Vaseline Healthy White SPF24/PA++ for day because it contains broad spectrum UV ray protection and Vaseline Cocoa Glow that moisturizes my skin all day long.

Aging itself can be differentiated to two types of skin aging process: intrinsic (chronological aging) and extrinsic (photoaging).

To help the skin fight the aging process, Dr. Shannaz suggest: •Using moisturizer that contains retinol to increase collagen level on the skin and promote cell regeneration; Alpha Hidroxy Acid (AHA) to reduce wrinkles and enhance the production of

www.beatmag.com

•Chronological aging is a physical process that has been programmed genetically. This process depends on genetic, race and hormonal factors. •Photoaging is often called as early or premature aging that is affected by external factors such as pollution, insufficient nutrition, smoking and disease.

SKINNY JEANS FOR EVERY BODY SHAPE: LEVI’S CURVEID ANKLE SKINNY

There are three types of Levi’s CurveID jeans available: Slight Curve, Demi Curve and Bold Curve.

www.beatmag.com

I envy people that can wear skinny jeans with ease. I have big hips and thighs, so for me, it seems impossible to wear skinny jeans and look good! I hope I’m not alone with this. But then I came across some great news that Levi’s just recently launched a new selection for their CurveID line, the ankle skinny. Why am I so excited? Because the CurveID line is all about shape and not the size! Levi’s has created a way to find the perfect jeans for women according to their body shape, not size. There are three customs fits, identified as the most common body types that will allow women to find their perfect fit. Levi’s store staff will help you find your perfect jeans by measuring your natural waist, hip and seat and the difference between them.

065

s t y l e

The ankle skinny range is a new addition to the already wide range of CurveID fits. I previously owned Levi’s CurveID jeans which is also a skinny jeans, but because I have to cut off the length, it looks more like a tapered pair of jeans rather than skinny jeans. So I’m excited with this version of ankle skinny jeans since I don’t have to alter it anymore and because it’s going to fall right on my ankle. I can also roll it up if I want to have that cropped jeans look. The skinny jeans comes in two different finishes: shallow (not available in Bold Curve) and abyss with retail price Rp 599,000.

Abyss and Shallow finish of Levi’s Curve ID Ankle Skinny

Sunset Coral, Snorkel Blue, Buckwhear and Summer Black Upon seeing these cheerful colors, I can’t say I’m not tempted. I’ll definitely give it a try next time I pass by a Levi’s store. But my heart still beats for the one with an abyss finish. What about you? Do any of these jeans scream your name?

www.beatmag.com

Not only finishes, but the ankle skinny also comes in a different variety of colors! So, if you’re looking for those colorful skinny jeans, you definitely need to check this new addition to Levi’s CurveID. They’re only available in Demi Curve, but I say, give it a go! The fabric comes in a super soft stretch fabric, that definitely will fall nicely on your body and it cost only Rp 549,900. Unlike any other colored jeans in the market that has overly saturated dye and colors are too bold, Levi’s colored finishes have that soft faded look that is achieved through an overdye enzyme wash, resulting in that soft hand feel.

This is the device that automatically churns authentic Italian gelato. Unlike ice cream makers that churn at higher speeds, the gelato maker’s paddle rotates at a much slower pace to produce a creamier, more intensely flavored frozen treat that is favored in Italy. Designed in Italy, the gelato maker has a self-refrigerating compressor that automatically chills the mixing bowl to the ideal temperature and allows you to make consecutive 1.5-pint batches without having to prime the mixing bowl in a freezer. The hermetically sealed lid keeps ingredients at the optimal temperature and prevents excess air from being whipped into the mixture, producing thick, smooth gelato. The patented mixing paddle thoroughly incorporates fruit, chocolate, and other flavorings and the stainless steel mixing bowl removes for easy serving. Paddle, mixing bowl, and lid are dishwasher safe. www.hammacher.com $299.95

Keypad Hidden Time Watch We have a love/ hate relationship with the 10-key pad. On the one hand, we used it to frolic through the cities and dungeons of Azeroth. Some of us were Alliance, some of us were FOR THE HORDE! but all of us set up our keyboards to optimally play our chosen class. On the other hand, there was that data entry temp job we had in college that made our eyes bleed. Let’s embrace the positive side of 10-key! This quirky watch is a conversation starter: it looks like a tiny 10-key number pad on your wrist. People will say, “What time is it?” and you can show them your watch and let them look perplexed. In truth, reading the time is easy: push any of the number keys and the time will light up, one digit at a time. This watch comes in classic keyboard ivory or black. We assume the black must be faster. www.thinkgeek.com $99.99

serious then it would be a good idea to get stuck into something like the inventive Cajun chicken penne (45k) or the enormous Aussiestyle cheeseburger (55k). I’m pretty keen to try as much of it as is humanly possible in the name of gastronomic research, so I’ve rounded up a couple of undernourished mates to help out and make sure we get through a decent cross section of the food lineup. starters for only 25k, Tuesdays any pasta dish goes for half price, students get 50% off food and drink all night for 100k on Wednesdays, dig out your sombrero for half price Mexican food on Thursdays, and TFI Fridays with your second main at half price and a free beer. he well-regulated entrance that was maintained by Mint’s crew was essential due to the density of the crowd waiting for M.A.N.D.Y. outside and the already full house inside. When the German DJ finally started to play his music, the crowd burst into cheer. The punters congregated in front of the DJ booth and pumped the air with hands raised while grooving out to the German beats. It was a truly magic night full with the classy folk for which Mint is now so well known.

4/20 Day It was on 4/20 when the mellow folk at Eikon swayed to the sound of reggae rather than your typically fast club beats. As usual, the entire venue was full, especially in the back area where the atmosphere was way more chilled out when compared to the harsh realities of daily life. Three Little Birds played in the back too and everyone seemed to be a little elevated by the Friday 4/20 atmosphere.
