From the Deck of the Commodore

We have now introduced our summer menu on the beach. We are in low season and have very few visitors so a limited menu makes sense. We have had to increase some prices to reflect ever-increasing costs of supplies and please bear in mind that our prices include 17.5% VAT.

There has been very little sailing activity going on so far this summer but we have now announced the Summer Sailing Camps offered in association with the Barbados Sailing Association. Details have been emailed to members and a list of dates is also on the notice boards.

This month we welcome Michael (Tino) Jones to the Management Committee to fill a temporary vacancy. As well as being on the main committee, he will take over from Adrian Gale as Chair of the Sailing sub-committee. Adrian will continue as Chair of the House & Grounds subcommittee.

BurgeeExchange

Social events this month are the Sunset Soca on the 15 th July and the “Last Friday of the Month” party with the Red Men on the 28 th July. By the time you read this, Sunset Soca will have been and gone. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable event. Some photos of the event will be featured in next month’s Bellbuoy.

Our flag has been at half-staff to mark the passing of ex-Prime Minister, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford. The Club joins the rest of the country in honoring his achievements and offer condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

On June 4, the Commodore exchanged Burgees with Paddy Mirams, the Commodore of the Bosham Sailing Club in West Sussex in the Uk.

Many members of the Bosham Club are regular visitors to Barbados and to our Club On the evening of the exchange, they served an excellent selection of complimentary canapés and drinks, including a large bowl of Rum Punch provided by Mr Bowen Wells, who is a member of the BYC as well as the BSC

THE COMPETITION WAS FIERCE

The Club held its inaugural pool competition on Sunday, June 25. It was a keenly contested match-up as members competed against staff for bragging rights and a trophy.

The members team held their own quite well as the experienced BYC team kept the pace hot.

The BYC team won the competition and all are excited and eagerly looking forward to the next one.

BOAT OWNER NOTICE

YOUR VESSEL AND YOU THIS HURRICANE SEASON

June 1st marked the beginning of the 2023 hurricane season and we wish to remind boat owners that boat your boat trailers should be in good working condition during this time.

Particular attention should be paid to Phase 3 of the Hurricane Contingency Plan which reads as follows:

Hauling out of boats will take place during this phase.

Owners must present themselves prior to or during this period and not during the WARNING PHASE

No staff or equipment will be available for hauling up of boats after this.

IMPORTANT

It is imperative that you check your vessel after rainfall to ensure it is free of stagnant water

The Ministry of Health has reminded us that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is still present and since the Barbados Yacht Club, is located “down wind”, we are considered a very high risk area. We have asked the boatmen to be more vigilant in their checks but request your assistance in controlling this problem.
