BELLBUOY

We are reducing the number of beach ambassadors and kitchen staff to take account of this annual reduction in activity on the beach but we will monitor the effect on income and adjust our service levels as necessary
Dr. Isobella ParkinsonI hope everyone had a pleasant Easter and enjoyed some of the events the Club offered over the holiday. Our breakfast and lunch buffets on Easter Sunday were particularly well received.
Unfortunately, we did not have any sailing events over Easter The only regatta in the sailing calendar was the Bequia Regatta, hosted by the Bequia Sailing Club. If any of our members took part in this regatta, please send us some photographs. Members who are aware of sailing events of which we might be unaware are asked to let us know so we can inform members of what might be taking place in Barbados and elsewhere.
We are coming to the end of our winter season and the Club has been much quieter than of late.
We will not be having a “Last Friday of the Month” party in April because of the Elton John tribute event on Thursday, 27th April. Please note that the offer of Early Bird tickets for this event will end at 4pm on Tuesday, 18th April. Friday, the 28th April is a bank holiday The Club will be open and we are providing a buffet lunch.
This edition of the Bellbuoy features Jackie Hoad, who was a past Commodore and Trustee of the Club and an avid sailor. We also regret to announce the passing of member David Leacock on Good Friday He was an active member of the Club, playing tennis and swimming every evening with friends. Our condolences to the family of both Jackie and David.
In closing, could I please ask you again to take a minute to read the rules and regulations on the back page of this Bellbuoy In particular, please note we now have a dedicated smoking area.

This month, we continue our four-part special feature on our Trustees. For this Issue, Dick Stoute shared some of his fond memories of competitive sailing as well as highlights from his formative years.
It is an honour to be selected as a Trustee for the Barbados Yacht Club, especially at this time when the Club is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
I have been a member since the mid 70’s and have enjoyed competitive sailing, on Sunfish, Fireballs and offshore racing mainly with Andrew Burke on Nefertiti and Countdown, but also on Bruggadung and several other yachts. We all raced under the CSA Rating Rule developed by Al Rapier. John Still trained me as a measure for this rule and
I began helping Al Rapier, by putting his formulae in a Lotus 123 spreadsheet and speeding up calculations he had previously done by hand.
When Al retired, I took over as Chief Measurer and created the first computer program used by CSA measurers to calculate ratings for the Rule, while continuing to update the formulae to ensure fair ratings. Along the way I served as secretary to the CSA and President of the BSA, helping to support the competitive sailing I enjoyed.
Much earlier, after graduating from Lodge School, I earned a BSC in Engineering and an MBA from Canadian Universities before returning to Barbados to work at TMR Sales and Service and Goddard Enterprises. I retired in 2008 and enrolled in a Philosophy PhD. program at Reading University in the UK. I was looking for something interesting to engage with, in my retirement. Thankfully this choice has worked well for me.
I believe our Club is very special. We must thank its founders for their initiative in creating it and all the members who contributed to its continued viability by volunteering to serve as Officers and on committees. Now it is soon to be 100 years old, we need to look to the future and ensure we plan well for its continued success, even as we celebrate a great achievement.
We take this opportunity to thank Dick for accepting this opportunity to continue to serve the Club and its members. Dick is the immediate past Commodore, his tenure spanned 2018 to 2021.
The weather was perfect for a sail in the Bay and our Commodore seized the opportunity to climb aboard the Lascia Dire with member James Webster.
Unfortunately, it did not end well as 20 minutes out, the wind caught the sail and the boat capsized. A passing catamaran came to the rescue and many thanks to Dave and Carolann of Cat-O-Nine Cruises for all their help with bailing and getting the dinghy back to the boatyard. The Commodore had a long swim!!
During the month of March we exchanged our Burgee with two overseas Yacht Clubs.
In May 1894, a small group of prominent local businessmen who were also the leading sportsmen of Traverse City gathered to organize a waterfront club as a home for their interests in rowing, sailing, canoeing, swimming, and trap-shooting.
By August of that year, the Club opened a three-story clubhouse on Indian Point near the mouth of the Boardman River with its first Annual Regatta, matching rowing crews from Grand Rapids and Detroit against the local clubmen in the featured finale.
Over the next forty years, the health of the Club rose and fell with the challenges and benefits brought by the lively pace of progress of the early 20th century. Gasoline-fueled motor launches grew to prominence on the bay in parallel with the rise of automobiles.
