A pastor decided to change the order of service. He convinced himself that his congregation was bored and disinterested in his messages because they had been following the same format for several years. For years the ushers would take up the offering, the choir would sing and then he would preach. To “mix” things up he decided that he would have the choir sing, then he would preach and the ushers would take up the offering at the close of the service. Little Janie sat quietly through a particularly boring message. Finally, realizing that something was different she whispered to her Mom, “Do you think if we paid him now he would quit?” Waiting is often difficult. We pray from a deep reservoir of faith believing that God is anxiously waiting to hear and

answer our prayers. Sometimes the answers come quickly. Other times we do not understand the delay and lose heart and hope. We may even wonder if God is deaf to our requests. Sometimes physicians give us a prescription with a bit of advice: “Now I assure you that this medication will work. But you are going to have to wait a few days before you are relieved of all of your symptoms. Be patient.” “Find rest, 0 my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him,” said David. He was able to rest in God because of God’s faithfulness to him in the past. He had been deeply disappointed by many others but never by his Lord who always protected and defended him. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. I enjoy unusual stories, stories about history etc., but also usually try to keep up with the news and will read a lot of the news online just because I can usually find out at the moment what is happening instead of waiting for the tv to tell me in the next half hour or more at eleven. I like that you can check out the British News Service to see their take on a story. Sometimes American news stories are focused more on entertaining us with things that don’t seem to really matter. But sometimes I have found that not everything on the internet is actual fact. In researching some stories for the paper, I will come across something that has me scratching my head thinking this can’t be right or there will be a contradiction of the fact. I think part of it may be just mistakes or sometimes we are soon to forget the actual facts. Even the title of this story is a quote attributed to Ben Franklin. Also it is attributed to Edgar Allen Poe. There is no known evidence I could find that Franklin said it, but Poe did use the phrase in one of his stories. But it seems that it is generally considered to be "proverbial" and of unknown coining since before the 1300’s, so they both could have said it without having come up with it. I was looking for something a while back and found a page that looked like a news service, but the more I looked at a couple of stories, the more I wondered if it was a parody or joke. One story had a picture of a racehorse in a compression suit and yeah that is a thing I didn’t know existed, but the story was that there was an underground street race for unregistered horses. The picture did look Photoshopped to me. There were jockeys with the suits and the horses were fitted with “undercarriage” glow lights if you will. I just could not see an owner of one of these horses allowing this to take place on a stretch of blacktop. This supposedly was going on in Louisville around the date of the KY derby at night, under a bridge?

Dog Days over yet?

Hot out?

Shut Up!

Another story on the same site went on about a report that was released by the Department of Health and Human Services. The title of the report was “Ground Still Least Desirable Surface For Breaking Fall”. The report on the site stated ”anyone who must come into forcible contact with the ground should opt for soil over harder options like concrete and rock.” I asked myself, “When was the last time I fell, that I had a choice of where the landing would be?” The Department of Health and Human Services didn’t do this report. Now they do have some good information on their site about fall protection, helmet safety and concussions, along with other information from the zika virus, to mental health, to the homeless but no “Breaking a fall” report. The Onion (the original site) is a farcical news website.

CHURCHES THE BANNER is looking at making a church page. If you would like your church’s information on here, just send us a business card or just a note with the information. You would probably want to include the church name, address, service days & times. You may want to include the pastors name and if there is a phone number. Please make sure you have permission from your church to submit the information but also to confirm it is correct. We will probably have quite a few, so we will try to get several on and may have to rotate them with each issue. Hopefully we will get church information from many of the different counties that we deliver to. The information can be sent to The Banner, PO Box 460, Crab Orchard, KY 40419 or you may email us at

Rare Discovery: Scientists Found Mysterious Beaked Whale Species Resembling a Japanese Legend Aug 02, 2016 A mysterious whale, resembling a character in a Japanese legend, has washed up on the beach of St. George Island but scientists could not identify it. A corpse of a dead whale washed up on the beach of St. George Island in the Bering Sea has proven an old Japanese legend to be true. The said whale, which could not be identified by scientists, fits the description of karasu or "raven," an extremely rare beaked whale species. According to the National Geographic, the mysterious

whale is 24 feet long with dark flesh, floppy dorsal fin and yellow teeth. Researchers first thought that the animal was a Baird's beaked whale. However, upon close examination, they could not identify it. The animal is said to belong under the genus Berardius. The study published in the journal Marine Mammal Science says that the black whale or karasu is so rare that there are only eight documented samples of the species, which the researchers obtained via a DNA analysis. "The challenge in document-

ing the species was simply locating enough specimens to provide convincing evidence," said Phillip Morin, lead author of the study. "Clearly this species is very rare, and reminds us how much we have to learn about the ocean and even some of its largest inhabitants." Popular Science notes that

there is little information known about the new whale species except for the Japanese legend about it. Also, scientists have not been able to observe a karasu alive. Despite this, Morin is still positive in the new discovery and hopes to find more karasu in the future.

"It's just so exciting to think that in 2016 we're still discovering things in our world—even mammals that are more than 20 feet long," he said. "We don't know how many there are, where they're typically found, anything. But we're going to start looking."

1. Wisdom Explanation: Solomon considers wisdom to be better than weapons. Battle may be won, but how many lives could have been spared if wisdom had been employed in the battle strategy? Reference: Ecclesiastes 9:15 2. We should be gentle and submissive Explanation: There is great power in maintaining a gentle spirit with those who are angry with you, and Solomon clearly conveys this principle in saying that a submissive spirit is able to pacify great offenses. Reference: Ecclesiastes 10:4 3. Folly set in great dignity and high places, and the noble set in low places Explanation: Solomon warns against setting foolish hearted men in positions of authority. This is

referenced in Ecclesiastes 10:7, which states, 'I have seen servants (those not qualified to rule nor demonstrating gift of leadership) upon horses and princes (those gifted and qualified to lead) walking as servants upon the earth.' Reference: Ecclesiastes 10:6 4. A teller of secrets Explanation: An idle tongue excels in one thing; it is able to set a forest on fire with the tales it tells. In other words, the stories of an idle tongue are destructive, doing much harm to everyone involved. Reference: Ecclesiastes 10:11 5. Give without expecting a return Explanation: When we cast our bread upon the waters, we are sowing our valuable resources in a place that is unlikely to produce a return, yet we are promised that if we do this, in due time, it will be given back to us. Reference: Ecclesiastes 11:1

Farm-To-Table Quick Pickles (NAPSA)—Here’s a canny idea: home canning and pickling. This tasteful pastime for preserving food at home has soared in popularity, especially as part of the burgeoning Farm-to-Table movement. Now, preserving food can be easier than many people realize, and vinegar is a key ingredient. For example, “refrigerator pickling” (also known as “quick pickles”) takes just four simple ingredients and three easy steps. It’s a fun way to enjoy local or organic vegetables, particularly if you have a small amount of produce to preserve. Enjoy as side dishes for entrées, condiments for your special cocktail or for your favorite snack; share them with family and friends at your next picnic or take some along as a delicious hostess gift. Basic Pickling Recipe For every pound of vegetable:

1 cup vinegar 1 cup water ½ cup sugar 1 Tablespoon kosher salt For variety, add ingredients such as fresh herbs, red pepper flakes, mustard seed, cumin seed, peppercorns, cloves of garlic, or any other pickling spice. Preparation Select, clean and prepare all vegetables. You can blanch them in boiling water, steam them lightly or roast them beforehand. The key is to start with crunchy vegetables. Pack all the vegetables tightly into containers with airtight lids. You can also combine more than one vegetable in the same jar if you want variety. Just make sure the flavors of the combined vegetables will be compatible because they’ll take on a bit of each other’s flavors. Bring all the brine ingredients to a boil in a small pan and pour the brine over the vegetables. Place lids on the containers, cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate for

Homemade pickles can be shared at a potluck supper or given as a clever hostess gift. at least 24 hours before eating. This allows time for the flavors to meld. Refrigerator pickles will keep for about a month. Depending on what produce you’re putting up and how you like it, you can use any kind of vinegar, explain the experts at The Vinegar Institute: white distilled (by far the most popular choice), apple cider, rice, white or red wine. THE MOVING WALL VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL COMES TO RENFRO VALLEY Contact: Tommy Hodges, Post Commander 859-200-8855 RENFRO VALLEY, KY (August 5, 2016) – The American Legion Post 71 is proud to announce that THE MOVING WALL VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL will be on display at the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Renfro Valley, KY on August 18-22, 2016. There will be an opening ceremony on August 18th at 6:00pm to show honor and remembrance of the fallen heroes. “The Moving Wall” will be open 24 hours each day until Monday, August the 22nd when it closes at noon. Volunteers will be on the site daily from 8:00am – 10:00pm to assist visitors in finding names. “The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty plus years. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington. John, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers built The Moving Wall. It went on display for the first time in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984. Two structures of “The Moving Wall” now travel the USA from April through November, spending about a week at each site.
