The Road to Independence Conquer the darkness at the cinema Already in its 15th year, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) brings Icelandic films to Tallinn. TEXT MIKKO VIRTA, PHOTO PÖFF
The festival consists of the main program as well as the three categories of competing films: Eurasian, Baltic and North American indie films. In addition, there will also be traditional cultural documentaries, the Monton fashion film series and movies devoted to human rights. Throughout the festival, a total of 200 feature films will be shown. The main program features recent Icelandic films. The festival's opening film is the Icelandic tragic comedy Either Way. The PÖFF award for lifetime
achievement will go to Iceland’s Fridik Thor Fridrikkson, whose best films will also be shown at the festival. If you need another good reason to go to the cinema in Tallinn, it can be to experience the legendary Sõprus Cinema. Even the new cinemas, Artis and Solaris are worth visiting for an excellent theatre experience. Most of the films at the festival will have English subtitles. ■

In 1975, it was opened as a museum, and renovated after Estonia regained its independence in 1991. Upon entering, You will be given a small booklet that will correspond with the images throughout the museum. Follow the arrows to be led along the “road to independence,” through rooms filled with photographs detailing Estonian history in the
19th and 20th centuries. While the museum does not have many artefacts,it is truly rich in both visual and textual information. The haunting photographs of the war years and the beginning of the Soviet period, through to the photographs detailing the fall of communism in Estonia truly demonstrate the endurance of the Estonian spirit. ■

Filmfestivalen PÖFF firar 15 med tonvikt på isländskt.
Festivalen PÖFF – Black Nights Film festival består av ett huvudprogram och tre underkategorier. Man presenterar europeisk-asiatisk baltisk och amerikansk film. Därutöver erbjuds kulturdokumentärer, modefilmer och filmer om mänskliga rättigheter. Under festivalen presenteras sammanlagt 200 filmer. This museum is often forgotten because it lies outside of Tallinn’s Old Town on the road to Pirita.

Följ pilarna och följ ”självständighetsvägen” i salarna fyllda med fotografier som åskådliggör Estlands historia under
1800- och 1900-talen. I lokalen finns inte allför många föremål, däremot desto fler bilder och text. De spökliga fotografierna från krigsåren och den sovjetiska ockupationen hela vägen till kommunismens fall ger en verklig och god uppfattning om det estniska folkets uthållighet! ■
