London's FREE monthly alternative music listings magazine, available from thebackpages.co.uk. Don't lose touch with what's happening! Next issue out 29th June. Sign up to our mailing list!

It's located at thebackpages.co.uk & will notify you as soon as the next issue becomes available, allowing you to get the best tickets first.

The editor says...

Hello! Welcome to the second edition of The Back Pages, London's new 100% FREE alternative music listings magazine. It doesn't matter whether you like hip hop, folk, thrash metal, disco or minimal techno. If a gig or club night could appeal to music lovers then we'll not only list it, but describe it too. This allows readers to find events that they want to attend in seconds rather than having to wade through pages of links or resort to Google. To help you to plan your month even more quickly we've added a simple navigation section at the bottom of this page page. This allows you to click through to the start of the week during which you're interested in going out and immediately start finding gigs. This month, our feature interview is with Sweden's brilliant, mysterious, psychedelic worldbeat combo, Goat. The band will be playing Field Day on the 12th and if you have tickets, we recommend heading over to have a look. The rest of the Field Day line up is also enticing, with Girl Band, Fat White Family and Four Tet among the many great acts joing headliners James Blake and PJ Harvey. June will also see the Guy Garvey curated Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre. This features top acts including Laura Marling, Richard Hawley and Femi Kuti. It also includes a range of free events spread through the

month. Outside of the festivals, a literal heap of exciting musicians are on their way to play London. These include the Melvins, who play KOKO on the 19th, Ty Segall, who plays the O2 Forum on the 24th and the incredible Kid Congo & The Monkey Birds, who are at Nambucca on the 30th. On the dance side of things, the Summer brings with it some colossal open air parties and festivals. Practically every weekend has at least one large open air event including Junction 2, which features Carl Craig amongst many others, and Rinse Born & Bred, which has more bass than you could shake a stick at. The roof terraces at Dalston Roof Park, The Prince of Wales and the Queen of Hoxton are all extremely busy during June. Among the many highlights we'd pick out the Shabba and Brixton Boogaloo up on the roof of The Prince of Wales. What could beat some reggae in the sunshine? Those are some of my picks. The point of the back pages is to allow you to find unusual acts that pique your interest. There are plenty of weird club nights and eccentric new bands who deserve a hearing. We've tried to pick out a few that we think are interesting, but, frankly, why should you listen to us? Give the magazine a shuftie and find something YOU like!

Swede Little Mystery

The members of Goat have carefully protected their identities since the band emerged onto the scene with the release of the “Goatman” single in 2012. As a result, it is a matter of some journalistic pride that it is the back pages that is finally able to reveal the identity of one of the masterminds behind the group's catchy acid rock/world beat fusion.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Swedish music scene, “I would say our core members is around a hundred people or so.” Magnus Uggla is a 61 year old pop rock singer who, sadly, failed in his attempt to represent Sweden in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. He said sadly, “I loved it, but it died a year ago. It was old. Now i have a Needless to say, this revelation is at odds with the band's deliberately newer one. He said, “Personally, I'm fine with whatever, as long it is a good vibe on stage and in the audience.” In terms of the band's plans going forward, Magnus is coy about whether a new album is in the offing, saying that he is not sure if he is “allowed” to reveal this. He does, however, reveal that Goat have been hard at work on new material and have been exploring a new direction for their music. He said, “We have worked a lot more acoustically while recording recently, trying to get deeper into a more traditional sound, away from the psych rock of today, with music drenched in delays, reverbs and noise. Not that I don't like that stuff too, but we in Goat need to find other ways to keep our music interesting to ourselves.” The first fruit of this approach was the band's excellent new single, “I Sing In Silence”, which was released on 27 May. For fans with tickets to Field Day, there's not long to wait before they get to see if this new acoustic material translates to the live arena as well as their incendiary electric psych work. Given the skill with which the band improvises around the hypnotic grooves from their immensely enjoyable first two albums, it's a fair bet that festival attendees are in for a treat.
