Nowadays a lot of ruins of fortress walls and temples could be seen in the centre of Sofia. One of the oldest historical monuments is the church St. George.


In 809 the city became part of the First Bulgarian Kingdom and got the name Sredets.

In the 14th century it was named Sofia after the church St. Sofia
