AboutConcord Concord, signifying agreement and harmony, was incorporated as the first inland settlement in Massachusetts through a grant from the Massachusetts General Court dated September 12, 1635. As the scene of the first battle of the American Revolutionary War (War for Independence) on April 19, 1775, it is considered the birthplace of the nation, where the “shot heard ‘round the world” for liberty and self government was fired. During the middle of the 19th century, Concord was home to some of the greatest literary and transcendental minds in America. Authors Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson and Louisa Alcott, and Nathaniel Hawthorne all lived, worked and wrote in Concord, and signs of their presence in the community remain to this day through the abundance of historic and cultural resources offered. Within walking distance of Concord Center are The Concord Museum, Orchard House, the Old Manse, the Old North Bridge, Minuteman National Historic Park, Emerson House, and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Walden Pond, which served as the inspiration for Thoreau’s Walden in 1854, is nearby and offers a variety of recreational opportunities and hiking trails. The Concord Free Public Library, Concord Art Association, Emerson Umbrella studios for visual and performing arts, and the Performing Arts Center (which is home to the Concord Orchestra, the Concord Band, and the Concord Players) are all in the downtown area. Located 20 miles west of Boston, Concord’s population has remained stable at 16,000 over the past several decades. It is a picturesque New England community of handsome residences, preserved open spaces, familyowned farms and thriving commercial centers. The town is served by MBTA commuter rail to Boston, Cambridge and Fitchburg; and a commuter bus to Boston. State highway Route 2 runs through Concord, and Routes 128/95 and 495 are conveniently accessed. Concord highlights

Maynard Highlights

The Town of Maynard, located on the Assabet River, was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1871. Prior to that, it was known as ‘Assabet Village’ and was legally part of Stow and Sudbury. The Assabet Woolen Mill made the highest percentage of wool for U.S. Military uniforms for the Civil War. After the mill shut down, Digital Equipment Corporation moved into the complex in 1957, giving Maynard the nickname “Mini Computer Capital of the World”. The Mill was renovated in the late 1990s and renamed Clock Tower Place and is home to the oldest working hand-wound clock in the country. Maynard is both rural and suburban, with a well-defined commercial downtown, open space, condominiums, single family and multi-family homes. It is a full service community with police and fire service, K-12 schools, curbside trash collection, and water and sewer service to 95% of the town. Maynard is situated in the Greater Boston Area, which has excellent rail, air, and highway facilities. State Route 128 and Interstate Route 495 divide the region into inner and outer zones, which are connected by numerous “spokes” providing direct access to the airport, port and intermodal facilities of Boston. Famed architect Jim Estes of Estes/Twombly (www. estestwombly.com) created a landmark home in a landmark location that stays true to its New England roots. Located a short stroll from Concord Center and one of the nation’s most important historic landmarks, The Old North Bridge, this property is perched in a manner that offers one of the areas most magnificent views west of Boston. A manicured and designer landscape contributes to the home’s form in a manner that garners the attention of even the most exacting buyer. A plush yard, beautiful gardens, stone walls, and spectacular outdoor entertainment space are all any family could ask for. This home perfectly experiments with modern aesthetics and is certainly not a mass-production design. It challenges the notion of sleek style, exhibiting crisp lines and efficient execution— truly a sumptuous example of suburban living. Ne wly

“The perfect union of modern design and traditional expectation, make this a truly one of a kind family home!” Completed in 2009, this home offers a designer kitchen that includes a Viking professional stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. These state of the art appliances are balanced by Vermont milled custom soapstone counters, custom cabinetry, and an island that seats four. Family and friends can bask in this home’s open loft-like floor plan and will be amazed by one of the most remarkable sight lines on sought-after Monument Street. This home’s open floor plan allows for flexible living and makes the home perfect for entertaining. Blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors, this home features glass walls, which allow for year round enjoyment of New England’s four seasons.

The Barn

offers a temperature controlled second floor that is currently used for storage. This space could be finished and used as additional recreation area or an expansive home gym. The third floor offers a dramatic office/artist’s studio complete with half bath. The other half of the barn with its striking structural qualities undisturbed, offers much potential for expansion or can be enjoyed as a signature space for entertaining.

Income Potential

A portion of the first floor of the barn was developed into a two bedroom residence that can serve as an in-law suite, guest /au pair space. It offers its own address and is zoned accordingly. The demand for this type of rental in Concord is currently high and could command a premium upwards of $2500 per month.

History

Architectural Description 761 Lowell Road is one of several “extended farmhouses” at Hildreth Corner. Its construction date is one of the area’s many mysteries. Part of it may have been built as early as ca. 1722. The main house as seen today, however, appears to be mostly the product of the latter part of the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. It is a 2 ½ story, three-bay, two-room-deep building with a pair of ridge chimneys. It has a pedimented projecting lobby entrance, or “porch” at its center entry. The door itself, with six panels and glass in the top two, appears to be a replacement of the twentieth-century Colonial Revival period. The windows here, 2-over-2-sash, 12-over-2’s and 8-over-12’s are also replacements, dating to various periods. Much of the trim, however, appears to at least pre-date 1830—the roof has a molded, boxed cornice at the eaves, but no end overhang. The corner boards are narrow. Extending to the north of the main house is a 1 1/2 story ell with 6-over-6-sash windows and three pedimented facade dormers. This is presumably the ell referred to by Keyes and Wheeler as having been added late in the nineteenth century. To its north is a higher 1 ½ story wing, clapboarded on the front, and sheathed in weathered vertical boards on the rear. It has flat-arched openings for garage doors on the facade at the first story. The fourth section of the house, also built late in the nineteenth century standing cross-gabled to the rest, is one of Hildreth Corner’s many handsome 2 ½ story barns. Its main wagon door, with transom above, is at the rear. A second, diagonalboarded rolling door, also with transom, is located in the front section of the south wall. A hip-roofed belvidere crowns the roof. Historical Significance This house is one of several on Lowell Road and at Hildreth Corner associated with the Brown family, members of which were in Concord from at least 1640. The land on which the house stands was purchased by Eleazar Brown, Jr., (1676-1755) grandson of original settler Thomas Brown, in about 1719, and he apparently built his house here shortly afterward, probably in the early 1720’s. Eleazar Brown was born in Chelmsford in 1676, was a weaver in Concord about 1698, left town for a while, and returned after his marriage in the early years of the eighteenth century. His farm here was small—about 40-50 acres of upland and woodland, and was one of the many in the North Quarter that stretched from the “Groton Road” (Lowell Road) west to Spencer Brook. In 1754 Eleazar conveyed this northern half of the farm to his son, Benjamin Brown, who sold it in 1769 to his nephew, Jacob Brown (son of Abishai Brown) and moved to Swansea, New Hampshire. Jacob Brown was an unusually successful farmer for his time; when he died in 1816 he left more that $7,000 to his heirs. Both he and his uncle served on the Board of Selectmen— Benjamin Brown in 1760 and 1761, and Jacob Brown from 1788 to 1795. Jacob Brown’s daughter, Elizabeth, had married Edward Farmer III of Billerica, and their son, Jacob Brown Farmer, inherited the farm. He was a friend of Thoreau, and he and his farm are mentioned several times in Thoreau’s journals. Shortly after the Civil War he moved to the center, and sold the house to Daniel Brooks Clark. Although D. B. Clark is still shown as the owner on the map of 1889, both Wheeler and Keyes say he sold property to Nathan Brooks Smith, who moved the house back from the street, adding the ell and barn. About 1883 Nathan sold it to his brother, Charles F. Smith, who made a living here as a farmer, milkman, and ice dealer. He was survived here into the twentieth century by his widow. By 1906, however, the property is shown under the ownership of Joseph Middleby; by 1937 it was the property of Charles J. Williams.
