Spring-Summer 2019 www.theatreroyaldumfries.co.uk

Welcome to the Theatre Royal Dumfries. Our Spring Summer 2019 season is jam packed with a variety of shows. We have something for everyone, from comedy to music to theatre.

We’re really excited to be welcoming New Old Friends Theatre Company to Scotland’s oldest theatre with their production of Crimes on the Coast this September. The Guild of Players purchased the Theatre in 1959, and to help celebrate this 60th Anniversary, the season of plays revisits some of the old favourites. Don’t forget, we hire out our auditorium, studio and other meeting spaces, so get in touch for more information.

Celebrating 20 years of their critically acclaimed musical partnership, Fraser Fifield (Ignition Trad Award 2015) and Graeme Stephen (Innovation Award 2013 & Instrumentalist of the Year 2011) blend a worldwide range of musical influences through a perfectly natural Scottish cultural filter.

FOLKLORE NOIR

Graeme has been composing and performing extensively for a range of classic silent films, while Fraser has been on inspiring recording trips to Mumbai, Buenos Aires and also gigging with Scottish folk legends, Capercaillie. It's set to be a perfect mix from two of Scotland's most respected musicians. Guitarist Graeme Stephen provides the perfect foil for Fifield's pipes, saxophone, whistle, kaval, cajon, electronics and compositions. Together they make a truly original sound, rooted in the Scottish folk tradition but exploratory by nature, which has consistently drawn critical acclaim.

VANISHING POINT PRESENTS

THE DARK CARNIVAL: UNPLUGGED

The Dark Carnival: Unplugged is an informal, rousing music and theatre show: With songs, spoken word and a free (though not compulsory!) glass of whisky for everyone, it tells the story of newcomers to the afterlife who are surprised to discover that death is not actually the end. Incredulous at their continuity, they form their own necropolitan community where every night is party night. But a mysterious event throws the lives of the dead into uncertainty. When news reaches the cemetery, an underground revolution begins, led by the stoical Mrs Mark and her band of necropolitans. Inspired by Weimar cabaret, danse macabre and classic songwriters of musical theatre such as Kurt Weill and Lionel Bart, the songs find themselves in a musical space somewhere in between Leonard Cohen and The Muppets. Come in, have a drink and join us for an intimate, celebratory and heart-warming night of storytelling and song.

WILD AS THE WHITE WAVES

‘Please give me some good advice in your next letter. I promise not to follow it.’ 19th October 1950, at Steepletop, a remote farmhouse in the pinewoods of upstate New York: through the early hours of the morning, Edna St Vincent Millay drinks and reminisces, sharing the extraordinary highs and lows of her tumultuous life. The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, she was an icon for Dorothy Parker and the Greenwich Village set in 1920s New York, an accomplished pianist, a translator of French and Latin verse, a political activist, a drug addict and an alcoholic. Openly bisexual, her poetry celebrated womens’ sexuality with a new freedom that brought her fame and notoriety. What Byron was to 19th century England, Vincent was to 20th century America – the embodiment of genius, passion and scandal. ‘Be not discountenanced if the knowing know, we rose from rapture but an hour ago.’ Interspersed with excerpts from her poetry and letters, Wild as The White Waves is an intimate, witty and moving encounter with a remarkable woman who resonates as powerfully today as she did in her own lifetime. Written and performed by Sue McCormick.

Rapture Theatre is proud to present an exciting new production of this critically acclaimed modern American classic, Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire about the politics of race. In 1959, Bev and Russ are moving after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they have sold their house to the neighbourhood’s first black family, which causes ripples of discontent amongst the cosy white urbanites of the local area.

Fifty years later, in 2009, the roles are reversed when a young white couple buys the same house in what is now a predominantly black neighbourhood. In both instances, a community showdown takes place, pitting race against real estate with this home as the battleground. Are the issues buried beneath the floor boards actually the same fifty years on? Acclaimed by UK critics and audiences alike since its debut in 2009, Clybourne Park has also been awarded Best Play at both the Olivier and the Evening Standard Awards.

Setting: Living Room Of 406 Clybourne Street, A modest three-bedroom bungalow, in the near northwest of central Chicago, Illinois. Act One: 1959; 3pm on a Saturday afternoon Act Two: 2009 - the same house. Supported by Creative Scotland Touring Fund Award, in collaboration with Federation of Scottish Theatre

JIM SMITH: BACK TO THE TEUCHTER This quickly became the fastest ever selling show at Theatre Royal Dumfries, with the first two shows selling out in under half an hour! It's Countryfile meets The Only Way Is Essex as Jim hits the stage with quirky characters, distinctive regional slang and perfectly pitched impressions to give city slickers an understanding of what the outside world looks like to those that 'bide up the glen'. Hot topics include internet dating for farmers, village nightlife and how to pimp your Land Rover. After catching the comedy bug writing sketches for the Young Farmers panto and making his stage debut five years ago, Jim Smith is now one of Scotland's most exciting up and coming performers. Still a working farmer in Perthshire, Jim's unique insight into rural living coupled with his sharp observational humour creates a show that’s suitable for country bumpkins and dead trendy townie folk alike. ABOUT THE THEATRE

The oldest theatre in Scotland, the Theatre Royal is in the heart of Dumfries and first opened its doors in 1792. It has strong associations with the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote several pieces specifically for its stage.

The Theatre saw multiple changes of ownership during the first half the of 20th Century, before being bought by the Guild of Players in 1959. The Guild managed to secure support from new sources and instead of planning on building new facilities upwards, they looked towards expanding outwards. Adjacent buildings were purchased, and renovation work began in 2014, completed by the end of 2015. The newly refurbished building includes several new spaces while maintaining many of the historic features, ushering Scotland’s oldest theatre into the 21st Century.
