The Colony Club of Detroit History
“The women of our city have endeavored to keep pace with its growth, and we see in this structure now being built, another added evidence of our desire to advance with the changing times. Much has been done in the past for the men of our city, but today we are doing constructive things for the women as well.” – Mrs. Charles Horton Metcalf, Colony Club President, 1928. When the historic Colony Club of Detroit opened, it was one of four women’s clubs in the area surrounding what is now Detroit’s entertainment district. Within just four blocks of each other were the YWCA at Montcalm & Witherell, the Century Club at Witherell & Columbia, the Women’s City Club at Elizabeth & Park, and the Colony Club at Park & Montcalm. The rise in buildings commissioned by and for women reflected changing and exciting times in the city and the nation. The Colony Club building was commissioned in June 1927 to be a seven story home for the club’s members. Designed by renowned Detroit architects, Smith, Hinchman and Grylls, and one of the first built by the firm Walbridge-Aldinger, the Colony Club opened in November 1929. A Georgian style building of red brick, limestone, and iron grill work, its relatively simple lines and form reflected the member’s desire for gentle elegance and style. The interior of the building is highlighted by the 3rd floor’s impressive Louis XVI ballroom. Painted in Versailles cream and gilt, the room is considered to be one of the city’s finest and has been fully restored to its original magnificence.
The women of the Colony Club used their building for a variety of functions. From three small shops on the ground level to the beautiful & modern solarium on the roof, the club proved to be a retreat for the city’s active women. Sixteen sleeping rooms on the 6th floor provided rest, while card rooms, salons, squash & badminton courts on the 5th were popular spots for recreation and socializing. The building included a fullservice kitchen, large and private dining rooms, and men’s smoking lounges on the 2ndand 3rd floors.The men, of course, were not allowed above the ballroom level unless they were one of the men on the club’s management & service staff. By 1933, the Colony Club faced economic hardship. Along with two of the other women’s clubs, the building fell into foreclosureand the women of the club disbanded. From 1933 to the early 1960’s, the building housed a variety of businesses and uses until it was purchased by the UAW. After functioning as the Detroit headquarters for the UAW in the 1960’s, the building changed hands once again and became the home of the Wayne County Community College. Then in 1984 developer and preservationist Charles Forbes bought the club and shortly after leased it to the Detroit Police Department which used the building as its Police Academy. With the arrival of Super Bowl XL,Forbes Management began an extensive restoration process of the club. Under the direction of The Gem & Century Theatre’s special events staff, the building hosted several ESPN functions, and has now become another gem in Detroit’s growing entertainment district.
The Colony Club is located at 2310 Park Avenue at the intersection of Park & Montcalm in downtown Detroit. It is behind Hockeytown Cafe and the Fox Theatre Parking Garage.The Town Pump and Centaur Bar are located across the street from the Colony Club. Northbound Exit: Please NOTE: The I-75 NORTH entrance at Park Avenue is closed. Follow Montcalm street WEST to Clifford Street. Turn RIGHT on Clifford and proceed to the SECOND traffic light. Turn LEFT onto the Fisher Freeway Service Drive and follow to GRAND RIVER. Turn RIGHT on Grand River and follow to the LODGE FREEWAY NORTH. Take the Lodge Freeway North to I-94 East (the Westbound ramp is closed), M-8 The Davison Freeway East to I-75 or West to I-96, or to I-696. You can also follow Montcalm EAST to Woodward Avenue. Turn LEFT onto Woodward and follow Woodward NORTH to an alternative Freeway entrance. Southbound Exit: When leaving the Colony Club, easy access to I-75 South is available by following Montcalm WEST to Clifford Street. Turn RIGHT on Clifford and proceed
to the SECOND traffic light. Turn LEFT onto the Fisher Freeway Service Drive and follow until the service drive becomes the I-75 SOUTH entrance ramp. From The North, I-75 (The Chrysler) Follow I-75 SOUTH to downtown. Take the Grand River Ave / Foxtown Exit (50). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left over the freeway and onto the Northbound/Eastbound service drive. Follow the service drive three blocks to Park Avenue. Turn right onto Park Avenue. The Colony Club is located at the corner of Park & Montcalm. If you are parking in the Fox Theatre garage, you can turn left onto Montcalm and follow to the Fox Theatre Parking garage on your left. NOTE: There is construction on 75 between I-94 & Downtown. The 75 South IS OPEN to Grand River.Please allow extra time for heavier traffic. From the East, I-94 (St Clair Shores, Port Huron) Follow I-94 WEST to I-75 South to downtown. Take the Grand River Ave / Foxtown Exit (50). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left over the freeway and onto the Northbound/Eastbound service drive. Follow the service drive three blocks to Park Avenue. Turn right onto Park Avenue. Colony Club Event Policies It is our privilege to assist in the planning of your upcoming wedding! In that we realize this is an occasion of great importance, we will strive to create fond memories and earn your repeat business. Our staff is equipped to provide excellent food and beverage services. You can assist us by reviewing the policies to assure yourself that mutually, we have covered all items necessary to produce a successful event. To Hold a Date: A deposit of $2000.00 plus a signed contract is required to hold a date. We do not hold a date without a deposit and a signed contract. Deposits and Payments- A deposit of $2,000.00 is due to hold any date for a wedding at Colony Club. Please make all checks out to Colony Club Entertainment, Inc. A signed contract and 50% of the balance is due six months prior to the date of the wedding. The final payment on the balance due must be received one week prior to the date of the event. There are no exceptions to this rule. All payments are non-refundable. All payments must be made with cash, check or credit card. All credit card payments are charged a 2.5% service fee. Provisions – Colony Club will be the sole provider of food and beverage service with wedding cakes and or a limited number of Kosher meals being the only exception. Colony Club reserves the right to monitor all events to assure compliance with its policies and established beverage laws. Menus – The Menu is limited to three entrée selections (including the vegetarian option) total per event. The Colony Club does not recommend use of custom individualized menus. Platform- Brides & Grooms are charged a $250 labor fee to set-up and break-down the house 16ft x 8ft platform. Chargers – Brides & Grooms are charged $1 per person labor fee to set and pack chargers.
Specialty Wine – All wine that is specially ordered will be corked and poured by the Colony Club. Any remaining wine not opened is the property of the Colony Club. One bottle corked by the Colony Club can be taken home the night of the event in accordance with the food and liquor laws of the state of Michigan. Guarantees – The Colony Club requires that you contact us to finalize your wedding package and menu selections six months prior the wedding date. Guaranteed guest count should be provided two weeks prior to the date of the event. It is our policy to prepare food for 5% beyond the guarantee. Meals for any guests over and above the final guaranteed count will be billed to the client. Once a wedding is contracted, if expected number of attendee’s decreases by 20% or more, the full room rental and 80% of expected food and beverage will be charged and in any event not less than the minimum guarantee as stated in your contract. Tastings – After the initial deposit is paid, a complimentary tasting is offered for up to six guests (including the Bride & Groom) at the Century Grille located at The Gem Theatre. Service is a tasting and not a full meal service. Guests can taste up to three entrees and four appetizers. Any additional guests are subject to a $20 per person charge. Please make your reservation through your sales associate. Tasting dates and times are based on availability. Tastings are only available for Brides & Grooms using one of our packages. Brides & Grooms selecting any special selections, food stations or buffets are not offered a tasting. Room and Labor Policies – The Grand Ballroom is reserved for the contracted time only with additional charges required for extensions beyond contracted arrival and departure times. Customer has use of a contracted room for 15 minutes longer than the time contracted. All labor inclusive with our wedding packages is outlined on page 10. There will be a $250 reset charge for any request by the client to change a room set-up once setup is complete. Access to Facility on Day of Event: Host and vendors can access the building no sooner than 2:00pm on the day of the event. Guests have access to the building 30 minutes prior to the start time listed in the contract.
Ceremony – For Colony Club to host a ceremony in any of its rooms or the Grand Ballroom, a $500 fee applies. Ceremony rehearsals are scheduled at the discretion of the facility up to a week in advance of the wedding. Taxes and Gratuities – All wedding packages are subject to 6% sales tax and 20% gratuity. Conduct of Event – Colony Club reserves the right to refuse booking events, which at its sole discretion are considered inappropriate for the Colony Club. The client agrees to be responsible for any damage to the premises charged to the client and/or authorized event representative. The Colony Club is not responsible for loss or damage to any personal property brought onto the premises by clients or guests. The client agrees that the Colony Club reserves its right not to serve any person under the influence of alcohol or unlawful substances and/or to request that such persons leave the premises. Performance – Performance of this agreement on the party of Colony Club shall be excused if such performance is prevented or impaired due to any disputes, strikes, accidents, government requisitions, restrictions upon travel, transportation, food, beverage or supplies or any other cause beyond the control of the Colony Club. In no event shall the Colony Club be responsible for the client’s loss or to the collateral or consequential damages. Building Access - All Events are limited to the use of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Floor Ballroom and 3rd Floor Mezzanine. Under no condition are guests allowed on upper floors of the building. Smoking Policy – The Colony Club does not permit smoking in its facilities. There are not exceptions to this policy. Parking – All provided parking is in the Fox Theatre Garage. Parking Passes are required to park in the Fox Theatre Garage. Please request your passes prior to mailing out your invitations. Valet service is an additional charge. Valet service on Tiger Game days is not recommended. Door Host- A Door Host to greet all guests, is included with all events at no additional charge.
Termination – Notwithstanding any provision of this agreement to the contrary, the parties recognize and agree that there may be situations under which the performance of this agreement would be inimical to the public welfare and safety. The Colony Club shall in its sole discretion be empowered to terminate this agreement and cancel the activities contemplated herein, either before or during the event upon such notice as may be practical under the circumstances, it shall have reasonable cause to believe that the holding of such activities may endanger the public welfare, safety and or reputation of the business. In the event of termination pursuant to this provision, the client shall have neither right to nor any claim to damages against the Colony Club. In addition, the client will receive no refund. Place cards – Place cards are required for all weddings with multiple entrée selections. Each guest must have a place card with their name, table number and some type of symbol of their entrée selection. All teens receiving the $20 off package discount must have a place card with “T” specifying they are under 21 years of age. Alcohol Service – Under no condition will shots of alcohol be made available for consumption. Under no condition, can alcohol be brought into the facility. Any alcohol brought into the facility will be confiscated by the Colony Club staff. End of Evening Procedures- Guests have an additional 15 minutes of reception time after the bar closes. After the allotted time, the lights go up. The room is available for additional 30 minutes to load-out. All host and vendor items brought into the building must be taken out of the night of the event. Colony Club is not responsible for any items left overnight. All vendor items must be removed from the room within 1 hour of the bar closing. Any additional time, the client will be billed a $300 Labor Charge to be paid the night of the event.

Standard Labor Guidelines Included In All Packages • One Event Manager per Function • One Bartender / Runner per 100 Guests (Maximum of 4) • One Server per 45 Guests for Appetizers • One Server per 45 Guests for Buffet Service • One Server per 24 Guests for Table Service All labor hours are based on the total time of the function, plus two hours for set-up and one hour for clean-up. In the event that a function requires longer set-up and clean-up times, additional fees will apply. A floor plan is requested one week prior to the event. Changes to the floor plan are subject to increased labor charges.

Vendor Polices The Colony Club requires all vendors to contact either the Special Events Manager (313) 963-9800 or the Special Events Director (313) 463-4215 to make all necessary drop-off and pick-up arrangements. Vendors are allowed in the facility after 2:00pm on the day of the event unless other arrangements have been made. The venue is not responsible for any items left overnight. Vendors have one hour after the bar is closed to load-out. Over the allotted time a $300 Labor fee will be billed to the client the night of the event. All Vendors must load-in and load-out from the alley just north of the Colony Club. All parking is located in the Fox Theatre Garage. All hosts
need to include their vendors in the final parking count a week prior to the date of the Wedding. All photographers are invited to submit their photos for marketing or promotional purposes. The Colony Club will promote all photographers that submit photos. The Colony Club is always looking for new photos to keep our web site current and exciting. The entrĂŠe selections that the host has selected for their guests, are available for vendors at $38 per person. The host must include all vendor entrĂŠe selections with their final count one week prior to the date of the event.
