Astrid Lindgren’s own Christmas in new picture book

Do you remember the 28th of January 2002?

P H OTO : J O H A N TÖ P E L

twenty years ago, around noon on the 28th of January 2002, it was announced that Astrid Lindgren had passed away that morning. Most Swedish adults still remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. Myself, I was at home with two small children and I recall how, for a moment, it felt as if the world had stopped. Throughout the day and into the evening people gathered outside Astrid’s building at Dalagatan 46 in Stockholm, leaving flowers or lighting a candle by the front door. On the 8th of March about 100,000 people lined the streets of Stockholm for her funeral procession. To several of my colleagues at The Astrid Lindgren Company it was first and foremost a beloved grandmother and a great- grandmother that had been lost. To the rest of us it was a person we didn’t know, but who still seemed like a close relative to us. In the Nordic countries in particular, but elsewhere around the world too, her unique personality and humanitarian actions were just as well known and familiar as her stories were.

Today the great-great-grandchildren of Astrid Lindgren are starting to be born. Perhaps the overarching goal of the company is to make sure that their generation, like the generations before them, are also able to share in the treasure trove that is Astrid’s work – and in turn help spread it more widely. In order to succeed in this we want to be where children are. That is why one of our most important tasks is to find new avenues and new formats for her stories, such as digital audio books, audio players, apps, games, music and not least films and TV. At the same time, of course, we continue to publish her work all around the world: today around a hundred publishers publish at least one of her books. Since that day in January 2002 The Astrid Lindgren Company has grown from two employees to sixteen. We get new enquiries about using Astrid’s work in different ways every day. All that she accomplished both on and off the page continues to live on – and we are grateful to be able to continue looking after her legacy, together with you. cilla nergå rdh, CEO, The Astrid Lindgren Company

Astrid Lindgren

Sweden’s best loved and most famous author astrid lindgren (1907– 2002) is one of the most read children’s book writers in the world. Her works have been translated into over one hundred languages, sold over 170 million copies, and are delighting children and adults all over the world. Her breakthrough as an author came in 1945 with Pippi Longstocking. Many of her stories can be seen as films, TV-series and theatre plays.

In 2022, 20 years have passed since Astrid’s death. Despite this, there is a never ceasing interest in reading her books and finding out more about her life. We read her books, watch her films, and sing her songs. Many are the quotes that have found their way into our vocabulary and her values still shape our understanding of what’s right or wrong, good and evil. Her importance to our society cannot be overstated.

I want to write for a readership that can create miracles. Children create miracles when they read. a s t r i d li n d g r e n

Save the Children partnership Pippi of Today

the year 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the first published book about Pippi Longstocking. To commemorate this jubilee, The Astrid Lindgren Company and Save the Children launched the global campaign ‘Pippi of Today’ (pippioftoday.com), a collaboration to create awareness and raise money for Save the Children’s work for girls on the move. So far we have raised almost 20 million SEK!

“We are incredibly proud of and grateful for the amazing results of the Pippi of Today campaign despite the very challenging circumstances as a consequence of Covid-19. The support and engagement from our partners have been invaluable in our work to highlight and improve the situation for girls on the move as well as making their voices heard.” Helena Thybell, CEO Save the Children Sweden A warm thank you to all partici pating companies supporting girls on the move! The first edition of Pippi Longstocking from 1945.

Continued support for children’s rights

Astrid Lindgren’s speech Never Violence! in an edition from 2018.

the pippi of today campaign is nearing its end, but of course we want to carry on helping children in need. That is why The Astrid Lindgren Company have decided to continue the partnership with Save the Children from 2022 and forward. The Pippi of Today program will be a part of a new collaboration focusing on Astrid Lindgren’s work for children’s rights. The fight for every child’s right to love and safety runs as an unbroken and consistent thread through Astrid Lindgren’s entire work and life. Her acceptance speech for the German Booksellers Award in 1978, ‘Never Violence!’, has become legendary and contributed to Sweden being the first country prohibiting all corporal

punishment against children by law in 1979. Since then, many countries have followed. The Astrid Lindgren Company are proud to engage in this longterm collaboration. We invite all our licensing partners to engage in children’s rights issues together with us and Save the Children – any questions or ideas, please get in touch!

Pippi Longstocking Lifting horses and breaking rules since 1945

“No, I don’t suffer from freckles”, said Pippi. The lady finally understood. Then she happened to glance at Pippi and exclaimed: “But, dear child, your whole face is covered in freckles!” “That’s right”, said Pippi. “But they don’t bother me. I like them! Good morning to you!” with her mismatched stockings, carrot-coloured hair and freckly face, not to mention super-human strength and resilience, Pippi Longstocking has become a cultural icon.

Pippi is regularly voted as one of the world’s favourite children’s characters; self-sufficient, quick- witted, generous and never letting anything – or anyone – shake her self-belief or take advantage.

No stranger to counter-culture, Pippi can be seen around the world in tattoos, celebrity photographs, works of graffiti and on catwalks as a symbol of female strength, kindness, fairness and acceptance.

Audiobooks and audioplays on the rise

During the pandemic, the digital audio format has grown in many markets, also in markets where audio hasn’t been a trend before. In Sweden we can listen to Astrid Lindgren reading her own books on several platforms. In other markets readers can enjoy straight readings by well-known voices and audio dramas based on the books. last year, The Astrid Lindgren Company made recordings of the three Pippi Longstocking books in English, read by comedian and self-confessed Pippi Longstocking fan, Sandi Toksvig. These can now, together with Spanish language recordings, be found in many markets on several platforms such as Spotify and Storytel. Through distributors Axiell, Overdrive and Findaway, the audiobooks are also accessible for a large number of libraries and retailers around the world. We are also seeing a rising interest in audiodrama. The Astrid Lindgren Company and SAGA Kids, Egmont’s digital global children’s books imprint, have recently signed a deal on publishing audioplays of the original Pippi Longstocking and Emil in Lönneberga books in Dutch, Italian and French.

Success for the Pippi Tonie in autumn 2021 Boxine GmbH launched a Pippi Longstocking Tonie figurine for their audio system Toniebox, in both Germany and the UK. It was an immediate success.

We are delighted that the marvellous Pippi Longstocking Tonie, eagerly awaited by our community, has been launched with such great success. We are really proud to have this classic of children’s literature on our platform. m a r k u s l a ng e r , cpo Boxine Boxine GmbH

Join us to celebrate Emil in 2023

12 / astrid lindgren 2022

“Do you know what Emil in Lönneberga once did?”, Astrid Lindgren once asked her three year-old grandchild who was screaming his head off. Karl Johan went quiet, because he was rather keen to know what Emil had done. That was back in August 1962, and Emil was born. At the end of 1963 the first book about Emil was publis hed and he has since become one of the most beloved of Astrid’s characters.

Mischief's good! in 2023, The Astrid Lindgren Company will be focusing on Emil’s 60th Anniversary, with the campaign concept ”Mischief's good!” which emphasizes the right for all children to be children and to be allowed to make mistakes and mischiefs. Just like in Emil’s case, most children’s mischief is unintentional – they are just exploring the world, but sometimes not in the way that adults would! We believe that children can be wiser and happier by being allowed to live like Emil. Get ready to join us and spread the message of every child's inherent love of discovery and creativity!

Björn Berg 100 years björn berg (1923–2008) was born in Bavaria and lived in New York for nine years of his childhood. During the 1940’s Björn studied at Konstfack, the University College of Arts. He also studied graphic art at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, and in Paris. In 1952 he was employed as an illustrator by Dagens Nyheter, the

largest daily newspaper in Sweden. His association with Astrid Lindgren began when Astrid saw one of his drawings and thought that the boy in the picture looked like an Emil. She contacted Björn and sent him her manuscript. Björn wanted to familiarise himself with Emil’s environment and travelled down to Småland in order to systemati-

cally study houses, gardens, fences, gates and natural surroundings. He also visited museums where he studied old photographs of people until he began to get a feel for how it all looked. Björn Berg illustrated all of Astrid Lindgren’s books about Emil in Lönneberga.

Ronja’s life begins on an extraordinary night, and she grows up to become an equally extraordinary girl. a girl who’s the apple of her father’s eye, but who also challenges him, and a girl who chooses friendship over family rivalry. Ronja explores the deep forests, lakes, mountains, and forest glades. She’s drawn to wilderness and adventure. Living in harmony with animals and nature, she seldom has reason to be frightened. A magnificent and beautiful adventure tale about abandonment, about being little and having to shoulder great responsibility, about parenthood, good and evil, and about the power of love.

The Brothers Lionheart the brotherslionheart is a tale of love strong enough to conquer death – not just once, but twice. After brothers Jonathan and Crusty pass away they meet again in Nangijala, the land of eternal spring. Casting a long shadow over their world is the evil tyrant Tengil, ruler of the country Karmanjaka, where he’s building his new fortress up in the The Ancient Mountains. When the book was originally published it created quite a stir, with people asking whether it was really suitable to write about death for children. However, Astrid Lindgren received an enormous amount of letters from young people who felt comforted by the story.

They call themselves the ‘White Roses’, and are in a never-ending battle for a strangely shaped stone dubbed The Great Stonytotem with the ‘Red Roses’ – Sixten, Benka and Jonte. k alle blomk vist is a young amateur detective who likes to compare himself to slightly more famous detectives such as Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey. He enjoys lying beneath the pear-tree in the garden imagining himself presenting lectures in criminology to a fictitious but admiring audience. During the summer months

it so happens that he, together with his friends, discover strange events taking place beneath the surface of life in their idyllic small town. The hunt for the criminals always ends well but once in a while it gets seriously scary. The big world, with all its gangsters, is perhaps sometimes too dangerous for a teenage master detective.

Karlsson on the Roof k arls son d oes whate ver k arls son wants – eats all the sweets by himself, always chooses the largest slice of cake and enjoys trickelytricking and tirritating people. He’s convinced that he’s best at everything and is not shy to tell everyone so. He loves getting presents and getting up to all sorts of shenanigans – and if something breaks or disappears, well then they’re just material things and are nothing to be sour about anyway. Smidge loves Karlsson but Mum, Dad and the older siblings insist he’s make-believe. “They can be make-believe themselves!”, Karlsson snorts.

In a perfectly ordinary building, on a perfectly ordinary street in town lives Smidge. Up on the roof, in a small house behind the big chimney, resides a gentleman by the name of Karlsson. He is, in his own words, a handsome, thoroughly clever, perfectly plump man in his prime. Attached to his back he has a small propeller with which he can fly … He decides to come in to land at Smidge’s. And from then on nothing is the same.

Seacrow Island

Summers in the Stockholm archipelago provide the backdrop for many exciting adventures; fishing net thieves, treasure hunts, distress calls at sea, seal-rescues and lots more that’s both funny and a bit scary. tjorven is a girl living on Seacrow Island in the Stockholm archipelago together with her dog Bosun, her parents Nisse and Marta, and her older sisters Teddy and Freddy. When summer arrives the Stockholm family Melkerson move into Mrs Sjöblom’s cottage Carpenter’s Cottage, and Tjorven gets acquainted with Pelle, a boy her own age, his older brothers Niklas and Johan, their widower dad Melker, as well as his daughter Malin, the oldest of the siblings, and something of a mum to the younger ones. When winter and Christmas come Pelle and his family return to Seacrow Island, but as summer arrives once again it seems as if the Melkerson family will lose the cottage. Luckily at the last minute Pelle and Tjorven succeed in saving it! In contrast to most of Astrid Lindgren’s films Seacrow Island is not based on a book. The script was written for the television series and only published in book form after the television series had aired.

Christmas in Småland

© CECILIA HEIKKILÄ

“To me, Christmas Eve is a strange day. You just walk around waiting all day long. Gunnar and I sneaked into the living room and squeezed the parcels in the laundry basket, where all the Christmas gifts were lying.”

a christmas when i was Lit tle (En jul i Småland för länge sen) is the story of a Christmas long ago – to be more precise, in the year 1913, when Astrid Lindgren was only six years old. She tells about the magic, the expectations and all the fun she had. The story is now published as a picture book for the first time, with illustrations by the well known illustrator Cecilia Heikkilä. For rights enquiries, please contact Rabén & Sjögren Agency.

The park is full of imaginative play areas, and music and singing can be heard from the many stages throughout the day.
