Long live the story!

in a moment of crisis we find out the true value of friendship, and 2020 was in many ways a year of crisis. In the fight against the pandemic we’ve all had to sacrifice many things we hold dear. What we once took for granted can no longer be counted on. We’ve had to live through the insecurity and the uncertainty of not knowing what the future holds. One of The Astrid Lindgren Company’s most treasured friends is the story. And what a friend that is! What a friend to have in moments of crisis! Always there, continually inspiring, energising, accessible everywhere, familiar yet always novel. 2020 has demonstrated how the story, when tested, has proven its strength and emerged more powerful than before. Despite lockdowns and isolation people have found their way to stories, in whatever shape they may take. Hopefully we have also found a way back to the shared experience of the story – reading to each other, looking side-by-side, listening together

– across generations, just like Astrid Lindgren always encouraged us to do. We are happy and grateful that we, along with most of our partners across the globe, have survived this crisis. We believe and hope that the story is stronger than ever and that a bright future lies ahead of us. Some of the liveliest stories in the world are those of Pippi Longstocking. Her 75th jubilee was of course overshadowed by the pandemic. Yet despite this she was acknowledged worldwide and together with our partners we have so far raised 2.5 million euro for Save the Children’s work supporting girls on the move! It’s impressive how in the middle of a global crisis we’ve been able to help the children who perhaps have been hardest hit. The campaign ‘Pippi of Today’ will go on throughout 2021 and continue to share Pippi’s strength and generosity with those that need it the most. cilla nergå rdh, CEO, The Astrid Lindgren Company

A successful campaign The year 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the first published book about Pippi Longstocking. To commemorate this jubilee, The Astrid Lindgren Company and Save the Children launched the global campaign ‘Pippi of Today’, a collaboration to create awareness and raise money for Save the Children’s work for girls on the move. the campaign was launched in January. In March more and more countries all over the world started shutting down because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The consequences of the pandemic started to threaten children’s lives and well-being in more ways than one. Children on the move are always exposed to great risk, and the 4 / astrid lindgren 2021

Covid-19 crisis intersects with their already dire reality. Due to the global situation as a result of Covid-19, the majority of the plans for the campaign and the anniversary year had to be adjusted or cancelled and the planned programmes to support girls on the move had to be changed or postponed.

Despite this, the Pippi of Today Campaign has been a great success – the campaign products have been launched and well received. Many of the companies participating have recorded great sales numbers. Some of the planned programmes for girls on the move are already up and running and many more are in the planning stages.

How will the funds be used? All funds raised through the campaign are and will be directed towards different Save the Children programmes with the aim to support girls on the move. the progr ammes are carried out in different contexts, both in countries of origin, in countries where girls on the move are in transit, and countries of destination where girls on the move plan to settle. Although the Covid-19 situation has delayed the start of the programmes; there are examples of how the Pippi of Today campaign has or will make a difference for girls on the move.

In the Jordan refugee camps Za’atari and Azraq, 1332 girls, age 0–6 years, have received access to psychosocial support and participation in structured playing and learning activities. The project is ensuring girls’ active participation in their families and respective communities by diminishing discrimination at home or within the refugee camp communities; improving girls’ confidence and wellbeing.

In Tanzania, the Pippi of Today funds are supporting a child protection programme in three refugee camps and host communities in the Kigoma region. The programme aims at reaching around 50.000 girls, age 0–17, with improved access to child protection and sexual and reproductive health rights services.

the Balkans migration route to Europe. The overall objective of the programme supported there is to ensure urgent child protection support and protection for girls on the move in two temporary reception centres, and ensure girls are included in the Covid-19 response actions carried out.

In Sweden, Save the Children will support girls in migration to have access to an active leisure time. The project will focus on strengthening their autonomy, broadening their perspectives and thoughts by showing possible ways of having a meaningful leisure time on their own terms.

New curriculum

Based on the study about girls on the move, Save the Children will develop a new curriculum to be used in girl friendly spaces which enables girls to learn about, discuss and improve their awareness of topics such as migration, gender-based violence, rights and law

and mental, physical and emotional health. “We are incredibly proud of and grateful for the amazing results of the Pippi of Today campaign despite the very challenging circumstances as a consequence of Covid-19. The support and engagement from our partners have been invaluable in our work to highlight and improve the situation for girls on the move as well as making their voices heard. We look forward to continue this journey in 2021 and together focus our efforts and energy into making an even greater difference for these girls.” helena thybell, CEO Save the Children Sweden The Pippi of Today campaign will continue throughout 2021 with several highlights. Please visit to stay updated! A warm thank you to all participating companies supporting girls on the move!

Pippi at the Circus it is with great pleasure that we look forward to what will be one of the theatrical highlights of the year 2022, Pippi at Cirkus – a collaboration with Pophouse Productions and Cirkus Cirkör. The show is based on Astrid Lindgren’s story about when Pippi, Tommy and Annika visited a circus and met the circus princess Miss Carmencita, the tightrope dancer Elvira and Strong Adolf, the world’s strongest man. Maria Blom has written script and Björn Ulvaeus is the executive producer and responsible for the show’s lyrics, set to previously released instrumental music by Benny Andersson and others. The music will be performed live by a ‘flying’ circus orchestra.

Sing along with favourite characters we are happy to announce that we have deepened our collaboration with the Universal Music Group, in order to further the spread of the great songs that Astrid helped write. Together with them, we have released an animated music video for the song “Here comes Pippi Longstocking” in Swedish, English, German, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Japanese, with even more translations to come. You are welcome to share these music videos in your channels. In the beginning of this year, we also signed a new deal with Unversal Music Publishing, who are now the master publisher for Astrid Lindgren’s lyrics. We are looking forward to collaborating with them on translating these songs, so that even more children will have the opportunity to sing along with their favourite characters, for example with this recording. the story is set in the countryside, as the fox slinks towards the house where the people live. They don’t notice him tiptoeing across the yard, but the house-tomte spots the fox. The hens better watch out - it’s them that the fox is craving. But the tomte is on guard, and he pacifies the hungry fox and shares the porridge that the children have left out for him. A little bit of Christmas drama, wonderfully recreated in Eva Eriksson’s illustrations in a picture book that was released in 2017 and has since been sold to 12 countries. Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter The night Ronja is born a thunderstorm rages. Lightning strikes the Robbers’ fortress and cleaves it in two. Ronja’s life begins on an extraordinary night, and she grows up to become an equally extraordinary girl. a girl who’s the apple of her father’s eye, but who also challenges him, and a girl who chooses friendship over family rivalry. Ronja explores the deep forests, lakes, mountains, and forest glades. She’s drawn to wilderness and adventure. Living in harmony with animals and nature, she seldom has reason to be frightened. Ronja is compassionate, just, and brave – if something isn’t right she’ll speak up – even if it leads to conflict with those closest around her.

marit törnqvist has also designed the set for Astrid Lindgren’s “Storybook Train” and the Villa Villekulla room at Junibacken children’s museum in Stockholm, which opened up in 1996. Astrid Lindgren wrote the accompanying story for the train in close collaboration with Marit – the last literary work she ever did.

The Brothers Lionheart A tale about the battle between good and evil, the inner struggle about being a coward or courageous, about a fight for freedom – and about death. the brotherslionheart is a tale of love strong enough to conquer death – not just once, but twice. After brothers Jonathan and Crusty pass away they meet again in Nangijala, the land of eternal spring. Casting a long shadow over their world is the evil tyrant Tengil, ruler of the country Karmanjaka, where he’s building his new fortress up in the The Ancient Mountains. When the book was originally published it created quite a stir, with people asking whether it was

really suitable to write about death for children. However, Astrid Lindgren received an enormous amount of letters from young people who felt comforted by the story. • First published in 1973 • Over 8 Million books sold worldwide • Translated into 50 languages • Product licensing program available

Seacrow Island

Summers in the Stockholm archipelago provide the backdrop for many exciting adventures; fishing net thieves, treasure hunts, distress calls at sea, seal-rescues and lots more that’s both funny and a bit scary.

tjorven is a girl living on Seacrow Island in the Stockholm archipelago together with her dog Bosun, her parents Nisse and Marta, and her older sisters Teddy and Freddy. When summer arrives the Stockholm family Melkerson move into Mrs Sjöblom’s cottage Carpenter’s Cottage, and Tjorven gets acquainted with Pelle, a boy her own age, his older brothers Niklas and Johan, their widower dad Melker, as well as his daughter Malin, the oldest of the siblings, and something of a mum to the younger ones. When winter and Christmas come Pelle and his family return to Seacrow Island, but as summer arrives once again it seems as if the Melkerson family will lose the cottage. Luckily at the last minute Pelle and Tjorven succeed in saving it! In contrast to most of Astrid Lindgren’s films Seacrow Island is not based on a book. The script was written for the television series and only published in book form after the television series had aired.

As they get caught up in a storm, they lose the oars and end up on another island, where they discover the older siblings’ secret hiding place. They are still far away from home, but luckily Båtsman is there to help!

A Seal of One’s Own

The Melkerson family are out on the island enjoying the spring. One day Tjorven is asked to look after a seal pup. She has a seal of her very own! She calls him Moses and he follows her everywhere, even sleeps in her bed. Tjorven’s so busy that she hardly has time for her dog Båtsman but he waits patiently for her.

Pelle finds a wishing stone

One day the fog lies thick across Seacrow Island. When Tjorven wakes up in the morning and discovers that her sisters have taken Bosun out with them to pull up the fishing nets she gets as mad as a hornet. And as the fog grows so do the worries about Bosun. Melker is crying with worry and as for Tjorven, she gets more and more cross. How will they find their way back home in such thick fog? Luckily Pelle discovers a wishing-stone by the beach, and perhaps it’s thanks to this that the boat finally makes its way back to land.

A Pet for Pelle

Emil in Lönneberga

Even if five-year-old Emil looks angelic, everybody knows he’s wild and stubborn, and gets up to more mischief than there are days in the year. He’s a clever and curious scatterbrain with an amazing gift for turning his God-fearing and respectable community, in the county of Småland, upside down. emil’s mischiefs are always hilarious and never mean. His wild ideas generally stem from his kind and caring personality. Next to the editions with the recently colourised illustrations by Björn Berg, Verlagsgruppe Oetinger has also made new full-colour editions with illustrations by picture book illustrator Astrid Henn.

Kalle Blomkvist – Master Detective

The three thirteen-year old friends Kalle, Anders and Eva-Lotta are somewhat bored in their sleepy town of Lillköping. They call themselves the ‘White Roses’, and are in a never-ending battle for a strangely shaped stone dubbed The Great Stonytotem with the ‘Red Roses’ – Sixten, Benka and Jonte.

k alle blomk vist is a young amateur detective who likes to compare himself to slightly more famous detectives such as Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey. He enjoys lying beneath the pear-tree in the garden imagining himself presenting lectures in criminology to a fictitious but admiring audience. During the summer months it so happens that he, together with his friends, discover strange events taking place beneath the surface of life in their idyllic small town. The hunt for the criminals always ends well but once in a while it gets seriously scary. The big world, with all its gangsters, is perhaps sometimes too dangerous for a teenage master detective.

Where stories come to life.

The park is full of imaginative play areas, and music and singing can be heard from the many stages throughout the day. The adjoining camping area offers cottages inspired by 19th century Vimmerby.
