News from St Ives Town Team

Chapel Arts @ The Corn Exchange concerts continue at 7.30pm on Friday 29th October with the fabulous classical guitarist Daniela Rossi. Argentine born Daniela has made her home in Cambridge and this will be her fourth appearance, which is always a highlight of the Chapel Arts season. November’s concert on Friday 26th at 7.30pm, features Soloman Smith who delighted the audience at the Jazz & Blues Festival.

The music plays on The Town Team have been working hard to bring back a bit of normality to St Ives and happily I can report that the Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival was well received and popular as the picture shows. 14

Daniela Rossi

The superb guitarist, Chris Newman, will accompany him and their performance will undoubtedly be full of coolness, groove and thought provoking songs. Whats happening and what’s new As I hope you will have seen from the events diary at the front of this magazine, life in St Ives is getting busier again, with a lot going on for us in this October and November issue.

Its all go! From the Ukulele Festival at the beginning of October, to the Snowman Festival starting from mid-November, and then the town Christmas lights will be switched on

Something for all of us is New and Happening.

• Firstly, a note from St Ives Library: We’ll be celebrating Libraries Week, 4th-10th October, and we would love to hear some of your thoughts on what the library means to you. Tell us what you value about our staff, services, books and buildings .Please just pop into a library and write down a few words or speak with staff. • Keeping up with tradition, the markets are back in town. Submitted by Stewart Denham, this sketch, with his own comment, is by John Hutchinson who lived in the town the 70s and 80s. The Burgess Hall tell us they are also back with a full, and previously popular programme, as in our events diary. • New and exciting is Di Rita’s at No 2 (the Old Bank), opening in October. Di Ritas are now merging their Deli, Bakery and Italian Restaurant all under one roof in their exciting and lovingly transformed development of the former Nat West Bank, next door to the Corn Exchange, in the centre of town. This will be great for any time of day, whether you want a loaf of bread, coffee, or more, Di Rita's at No 2 will serve breakfast, pizzas, afternoon tea, and an evening ‘experience’ menu from Chef Andrew. The Ivy League is busy with music dates, and The Oliver Cromwell has music from the Silver Backs on 7th October, after which they will close for refurbishment from 11th October, until 15th November. 16

• Do you fancy having a sing with your local Choral Society? If so The St Ives Choral Society invite you to Come and Sing at the Free Church on 16th October. This will be a day to learn to sing the Mozart Requiem, with a concert in the evening. For more information see tickets for the evening concert • The Norris Museum Youth Panel are seeking new members! If you are aged 14 –18 and would like to find out more, please get in touch with Susan Bate at communities@

• Now able to meet again, the friendly and local St Ives Photographic Club will celebrate their 50th Anniversary next year. To showcase the clubs’ work, their Annual Exhibition is on 5th and 6th

November in the St Ives Free Church when visitors have the opportunity to vote on their favourite image. • The Golden Lion sees the return of St Ives Folk Sessions, hopefully now held monthly. Founder Ed Goodman says: Folk music is all about the stories and experiences of the writer and can range from beautiful ballads to sea shanties to punk folk. It's evocative, cultural, and personal. stivesfolksessions. Tickets for Friday 19 November www.bit. do/thnovembersessions.

‘Being there’

The second in our regular series or articles from angler Bob Bailey. It’s said that angling is an excuse for ‘being there’, and you might immediately think that I’m referring to getting away from the hustle and bustle of life and sitting by the waterside for a few hours, but there is more to it than that. To anglers, ‘being there’ refers to the enjoyment of everything that’s going on in nature around you, whether you catch fish or not. When you are quiet and observing the water and surroundings, nature carries on around you. Such experiences are missed by those doing other activities, walking, cycling, and boating, because they do not stay around long enough or make too much disturbance. An early angling memory is when I was fishing on a farm pond on a calm summer’s day. I was sat low down close to the water and all of a sudden what looked like two eyes popped out of the water and started moving towards me. I froze, mesmerised by its movement and not knowing what it was. The ‘eyes’ turned out to be the head of a grass snake; it continued and exited the water so close to me I could have reached down and touched it. A more recent favourite is when a mole dug its way out of the stones next to me, had a sniff and then a reappeared a minute or two later and decided to swim across the river. The mole’s attempt to steer itself across the river was not graceful, its little arms and legs flapping away, first going left then right. It made it safely across, pulled itself up on to a lily pad and disappeared into the undergrowth. Of course the angler’s favourite interaction with nature has to be the meeting of like minds… the fisherman and the kingfisher. It is a magical moment when one of Britain’s prettiest birds lands on your rod or pole. You freeze, not wanting to scare the bird off so that you can share a few moments, before it realises that whilst you aren’t a danger, you aren’t particularly interesting either. So, whilst in this second article you might naturally have expected me to talk about fishing, you’ll now understand that there’s more to fishing than catching fish.
