HDC has now published a draft masterplan for St Ives

This is a stage in a process and as yet nothing has been decided, however it is an important document and the next stage could determine how St Ives develops over the next few years. The plan identifies five project areas:

1

. Addition of a pontoon and mixed-use space by The Quay.

2. Refurbishment of Market Hill.

3. Creation of an Innovation Centre and Incubator Hub in the Cattle Market area.

4. Additional residential provision. 48 apartments, 11 live/work units and 3 town houses also in the Cattle Market area.

5. A multi-storey car park and enhanced retail provision in the Cattle Market area.

The plan (68 pages) can be found at: https://www.huntingdonshire.gov.uk/people-communities/markettowns-programme/draft-masterplans/

It is difficult to read on-line but the Town Team has produced a large printed copy, which can be read in the Riverport Café Bar at the Corn Exchange (please leave for others to see). According to the authorities there will be an online form to enable feedback by the deadline of 28th October 2022.

St Ives Town Council meeting

Whilst these are only draft proposals they could be very important in determining the economic and environmental future of St Ives and it is vital that residents can have their say on these proposals before decisions are made. If you wish to make comment, the

Town Council are holding a meeting about the Masterplan at 7pm on 5th October in the Hall at St Ivo Academy, which will enable more residents to attend and speak.

Further Meeting on 18th October

Alternatively the Town Team will be holding a meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday 18th October, in the Corn Exchange, which anyone can attend if you wish to hear other views and comment on the proposals. The Town Team will feed back all the comments to HDC.

Plus a special meeting on OCTOBER 5th at 7 pm St Ivo Academy

The meeting will be at 7 pm, now in the hall at St Ivo Academy to allow for more residents to attend. Comments should be sent in advance of the meeting to democratic@stivestowncouncil. gov.uk and they will be summarised as part of the Council’s submission. Residents are also able to comment directly to HDC using the website link: https://www.huntingdonshire.gov.uk/masterplans

The passing of time

How did St Ivians tell the time? Well, until the middle 1800s there was no uniform time in England - midday in Houghton could be 11.40 am at St Ives! Standard time came with the advent of railways – and the demand of uniform timetables.

In the past tradesmen used pocket watches and there was the Parish Church steeple clock, but that stopped working in the 1850s. That clock was replaced in 1872 by the current four dial clock at a cost of £200 - comparable to £22,000 now – and which continues today to chime across the town every 15 minutes.

Clock Tower

A more prominent guide was the clock tower on top of Robert Kiddle’s furniture warehouse. Erected in 1802, its timekeeping was at best an estimate. A letter published in 1849 said the clock ‘will exhibit a fit of stubbornness, and stand stock still, and then rush on at such a pace as old Time was never known to move before’.

The image here is from the 1890s. The clock tower was dismantled in 1922 after becoming unsafe. There’s a photo of the dismantling work in the St Ives Photo Album 1920-1939.

News from St Ives Town Team

By the time you read this The Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival will be over and we hope it was as enjoyable as usual.

The Jubilee Bandstand

The Old Riverport Sailors Club evening held in October was organised to help raise funds for the Jubilee Bandstand. It proved to be a night to remember and raised over £800 for the fund, which now stands at just under £36,000 an increase of nearly £4,000 since we last reported in this magazine. On top of that three local companies have pledged to help with the installation.

We still need at least £7,000 to reach our target, so please consider making a pledge. It is easy to do. You can make a pledge (from £25 upwards) by sending your contact details (address, email and telephone number) to: townteam@stivescambridgeshire.co.uk, stating the amount you wish to pledge. Alternatively you can give details at The Town Hall between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Your pledges and donations will be recognised. Every person or company that donates to the bandstand will be inscribed on a panel (unless they wish to remain anonymous) so that future generations will see all of the people who contributed. Please note: Any contact details you send will remain confidential.

At the time of going to press we are still awaiting planning consent, which when received, will allow us to proceed with the project and start collecting the money that has been pledged.

Chapel Arts @ The Corn Exchange

Friday 28th October sees two of the finest guitarists around. Johnny ‘Magic Boy’ Wright & Chris Newman playing together for the first time in a while - a special treat for guitar lovers. All concerts start at 7.30pm in the Riverport Café Bar. Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets: £10 from www.ticketsource. co.uk/eventsstives or from the Riverport Café Bar.

Strum Like a Viking

On Saturday 15th October the Old Riverport Ukulele Festival returns to the Corn Exchange and it is expected to welcome around 200 Ukulele players from far and wide.

The day will include: a Flash Mob at 9.30 am, a dedicated room for friends to meet up and play, trade stands with Matt Stead and Tewin

Handmade Ukuleles, plus two workshops: 10am - Song Writing with the Hedge Inspectors, and at 11am - Chord Melody with Marc Gallagher. There will be a midday concert with Hamish Currie after which visiting

Ukulele Groups will be able to perform. The day will end with a concert featuring Plastic Jeezus, Marc Gallagher and the Hedge Inspectors. NOTE: There will be a special prize for the best dressed Viking! Tickets, just £10, are selling fast so to reserve a place visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/ eventsstives.

ST IVES WINS GOLD FROM ANGLIA IN BLOOM

All the hard work by volunteers with St Ives in Bloom throughout the spring and summer of 2022 was officially rewarded on 7th September when the town received a Gold Award from Anglia in Bloom, in the large town category at the Awards Ceremony, held at Orsett Hall in Essex.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

The Judges had spoken of the vibrant community spirit within the town and were interested in St Ives in Bloom’s plans for the future. If you would like to be part of those plans, or to volunteer with St Ives in Bloom (daffodil planting as usual this autumn!), please have a look on the website: www.stivesinbloom.co.uk or get in contact by email on siibinfo@gmail.com

Holt Island Nature Reserve wins Gold too!

Not only did St Ives win Gold, but also Holt Island Nature Reserve won Gold in recognition in the Wildlife/ Conservation category as well as an award winner for Best Conservation/Biodiversity Project.

SOLAR ENERGY ARRIVES IN ST IVES!

We all know that we need alternative ways to generate electricity to help fight climate change. And that solar panels capture the energy of the sun in a clean and efficient way.

But not everybody is happy with the sight of field after field of their shiny reflective faces, and especially if they are sited without consideration for our beautiful landscape. Here in St Ives we can be proud that our Park & Ride car park provides the ideal urban site, and with an additional benefit for car owners.

This is the St Ives Park & Ride Smart Energy Grid Project.

The energy generated will supply two local businesses close by, and the panels form a protective roof over the cars. Lighting underneath the canopy will improve safety at night, and landscaping will help increase biodiversity at the site.

The scheme is funded by our County Council and the European Regional Development Fund.
