AL www.sStiO ONLINE vesnow Welcome to the latest .com issue of St Ives NOW! Many events and activities have been organised to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. You can see a round up of what's happening locally on page 7. Along with the return of regular favourites such as Picnic in The Park (see page 21) and Music on the Waits, it makes for a great season of entertainment. In addition, our extended What's New and Happening feature on page 18–19 details events and activities for all ages, as well as covering new arrivals to the town such as Bottle Bank and The Commute Café. You can also read about the new Town Mayor Cllr Philip Pope. Our St Ives 100 years ago feature shows how different the Filbert's Walk area was back then. Locals know it as a pleasant route to stroll along coming into town. It is an eye opener to see that there were once 31cottages there! These dwellings were erected to ease the growing housing problem at the time. See page 11. Bob Bailey's article on page 26 shows how a younger generation are taking up angling with the "Get Fishing" courses run by St Ives Angling Society. With an update on from The Town Team, and another full diary of events on pages 4 – 5, there's plenty to look forward to over the coming months Best wishes, stay safe

News from St Ives Town Team Following the busy Jubilee weekend there is still much to look forward to . . .

Chapel Arts in The Corn Exchange

These intimate concerts have proved very popular and often sell out. In June we have a combination that appeared here five years ago, the brilliant guitarists Chris Newman & Humfry Finkle, with an evening of improvised ragtime music. On 29 July we welcome for the first time, Tenor James Schouten. Chris Newman & James graduated from the Royal Humfry Finkle College of Music with distinction and worked at Glyndebourne Festival Opera for a while. James will entertain us with a range of operatic arias and contemporary songs.

Dave Hayden & Marco

The concerts take place on the last Friday of each month at 7.30pm in the Riverport Café Bar. Tickets are just £10 and can be purchased online at www.ticketsource. James Schouten or from the Riverport Café Bar. Places are limited so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.

The Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival

Taking place this year from 15th and 18th September there are nine new acts to enjoy, plus eleven returning popular acts. For the first time we have two

DJs, Marco and David Hayden, offering a night of Northern Soul dancing. For details of this and all the other acts go to or see the Facebook page: theoldriverportjazzandbluesfestival.

‘That’s not all Folks’

On Saturday 15th October the Old Riverport Ukelele Festival returns and tickets are already selling online. So to reserve a place visit

Bandstand Update

We are pleased that we have pledges totalling over £23,000 for the installation of a bandstand to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, however we still need to raise at least £17,000 more. This is a genuine community effort with pledges coming from residents and businesses. Although it seems like a lot of money, just £1 from every person in St Ives would be enough. You can make a pledge (from £25 upwards) by visiting St Ives Town Hall, (between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday) stating the amount you pledge and giving contact details. Alternatively you can email: with the same details. The names of all who contribute to the bandstand will be engraved on a panel for future generations to see. PLEASE NOTE: Pledged money will not be taken until we know that the project can go ahead and the funds are needed. Any funds donated for the bandstand but not used will be returned to the donor.

ST IVES NOW! AND THEN ‘St Ives 100 years Ago’ looks back at Filbert’s Walk. If you walk over St Ives historic Town Bridge from the town, along London Road, just beyond The Dolphin car park turn into the footpath on your right, you will have reached Filbert’s Walk.

Email: Check out our website:

The Hayward Hall is ideal for your Celebraon Party with private bar and kitchen available

Today it’s a pleasant walk down to Hemingford Road, however the 1930s photo shows a very different view. John Green built a row of 31 cottages in 1820, taking advantage of a desperate need for housing in St Ives. These cottages were originally called Hemingford Green with a pub in the middle named the Green Man. He also built Green Street - John obviously liked the sound of his own name!

Described as ‘having the knack of crowding the largest number of small houses on a given area’, John’s houses were unfortunately of poor quality. On the ground floor was a cellar/ scullery/living room, above a single bedroom and in most winters the cellars flooded. In such conditions would have lived families of up to 10 persons. The houses were demolished in 1960. So what about the origin of the name ‘Filbert’s Walk’? Well, hazel trees lined the route and hazelnuts were also called filberts in medieval times because they were ripe by 20 August, St Philibert’s Day. For much more about the past of St Ives, Google St Ives 100 Years Ago.

Shall we talk about dementia? Some 900,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, and by 2040 this is likely to rise to around 1.6 million. Dementia can affect a person in different ways because it may impact their memory, language and behaviour and even their mobility, coordination and vision. If you have an older loved one who has recently been diagnosed with dementia, what can you expect as their condition progresses? How will they change, and how can you best support them? Tackling common challenges ‘Let’s talk about dementia’ is a new guide from leading care home provider, Care UK, which tackles 21 common questions and scenarios that families experience as they navigate their loved one’s condition.

‘Get Fishing’ success!

I write in the depths of the close season - rivers are closed to coarse fishing and fishermen up and down the country are dreaming of opening day on June 16th. The close season is a good time to look back on the last season and plan for the next. In 2021 St Ives Angling Society ran two ‘Get Fishing’ events which were opportunities for anyone to learn the basics of fishing. Get Fishing is a gradual introduction to fishing with the participant learning new things each time. It’s fair to say that we could have filled the available spaces three times over, such was the interest locally. We had boys and girls as well as adults wanting to learn, people Each participant received 1-1 from all kinds of backgrounds, tuition from our experienced proving that fishing is open to anglers everyone. The club had received funding from the Environment Agency via the Angling Trust in order to provide suitable tackle and bait. Our new anglers were shown how to use a pole and introduced to the float, weights, a hook, and maggots of course. When correctly set up, the float will go under the water when the fish takes the bait. It’s fair to say that teaching a skill and seeing the excitement of people catching their first fish is incredibly rewarding. One parent remarked that they had struggled to find something their child was interested in, other than something in front of the

TV... and here they were out in the countryside learning about nature, focussed on the matter at hand. His child was hooked.

The 'top rod' on the day caught 20 fish, pictured here playing a perch

Fishermen know that not every session is a good one, everyone has the occasional ‘blank’, but our attendees caught as many as 20 fish in their 45 minute slot and the feedback was that most if not all wanted to fish again.

The club is planning to run another round of events this year and a competition with prizes for different age groups. If you are interested then you can contact me and I’ll let you know when registration opens. It goes without saying that events like this could not happen without our volunteers who give up their time to share their love of fishing, so I’ll end by saying thank you to the volunteers, and look forward to seeing everyone back on the bank on the glorious 16th.
