On page 12, our Town Team News highlights some planned events for 2022, including the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. There are a wide variety of activities at St Ives library for all ages. What's new and happening on page 21 details the continuing refurbishments, and expansions of popular local venues. There is also a chance to see hidden treasures at the Norris museum with their 'unseen collections' event planned for new year. Our Tales from the riverbank feature on page 25 provides details of the new nature reserve being created locally. Not only is it a wonderful site to visit, with stunning views, it is also a major wildlife habitat, attracting back a wide range of wildlife once common to the area. With the opportunity for families to come together, I hope this year the festive season will be very special to everyone after the recent times we have endured. Best wishes, stay safe

December 2021– January 2022

News from St Ives Town Team 2021 was an unusual year, partly because it didn’t start in earnest until half-way through. The Covid pandemic led to concern and apprehension about whether planned events could take place safely, if at all. Thankfully the worst of the pandemic relented sufficiently for the Town Teams’ Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival, the Old Riverport Ukulele Festival and the Chapel Arts @ The Corn Exchange concerts to go ahead very successfully. People really appreciated the opportunity to go out again and they did so in increasing numbers as the year progressed. This was highlighted by the excellent turnout for the Illuminated Boat Parade, now under the Town Team umbrella and funded by them.

Planning for a great 2022

A Jubilee Bandstand for The Waits

The biggest project that the Town Team are undertaking is promoting the installation of a bandstand on The Waits. This area, often used for concerts, normally requires the erection of a gazebo or two to shelter the performers from sun or rain. The Team consider that a purpose-built bandstand, dedicated to the Queen in recognition of her considerable reign, is the ideal way that St Ives can mark the occasion. There is a precedent for this as the Victoria Monument at the top of the Broadway was erected to commemorate the next longest serving monarch, Queen Victoria.

Bandstand at Ely.

Of course 2022 is going to be all about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, which are planned to involve the whole town over a four-day weekend from 2nd to 5th June. The Town Team is planning a series of events to celebrate this landmark and will also be working on a number of projects over the year. This includes the planting of trees on The Quay, which will not only improve the general appearance but offer much needed shade for this popular area during the warm summer days. Another project is the installation of two information boards marking the site of the St Ives Railway Station, working with St Ives In Bloom these will complement the flowerbeds that they installed on Station Road, near Waitrose, last year.

Such a project will cost quite a lot and it is hoped that local businesses and residents will feel that this will be a lasting memorial to which they can contribute. The project is in the early stages so look out for more details in the next few weeks.

What about the other events

As well as these exciting new plans for 2022, the Town Team will be holding The Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival between 15th to 18th September and the Old Riverport Ukulele Festival returns on 15th October. The Chapel Arts @ The Corn Exchange Concerts will also take place on the last Friday of each month from January to November and three acts are already confirmed. As well as these exciting new plans for 2022, the Town Team will be holding The Old Riverport Jazz & Blues Festival between 15th to 18th September and the Old Riverport Ukulele Festival returns on 15th October. Whats happening and what’s new • Oliver Cromwell refurbished – but not the statue! It’s great to see this popular pub in Wellington Street St Ives has had a superb total refurbishment. Joey and Jemma re-opened with their new look in mid-November. It is modern yet still has a traditional cosy feel. They have an internationally inspired menu for lunches and suppers, and are open weekdays for both, plus on Saturdays they serve meals from midday to 9 pm, with Sunday lunches from 1 pm to 6 pm.

• Di Rita’s at No 2 The thoughtfully renovated former Nat West Bank, is now the home of a stylish and airy Italian bakery/café/restaurant. Now, having merged their restaurant, deli and bakery under one roof, Di Ritas @ No 2 is a great place for coffees, lunch, tea, or supper and is already proving very popular at all times of day. Some other retail news. The small Abbey Retail Park on Harrison Way opposite Morrisons is always expanding and now includes a new wine shop among the variety of outlets. Harvey Robinson estate agents are opening in White Hart Lane in January 2022. • The Volunteer Centre in St Ives need more drivers! The Volunteer Centre is a registered charity based in the Town Hall in St Ives. It offers a Community Car Scheme Service for anyone who needs to make an essential journey where no suitable public transport exists and for people with mobility difficulties. At the moment the Volunteer Centre struggles to meet all requests and have to prioritise needs, and the scheme only works well if there are enough drivers! So if you have a few hours a week to spare, and can use your own car, please contact Debbie on 07990 477552 or email for a registration form. She would love to hear from you!

• Norris Museum - Museum Visits for Children’s Groups If The museum is looking for more volunteers to join their school visits, family events and early year visits teams. If you can help, details are at: take-part/volunteer/.

These visitor groups enable children to discover something about our local history, from Jurassic fossils to prehistoric mammoths, Roman pottery, craft activities and to have time to explore the museum. Evening bookings available. Hannah, the Learning Officer, is always happy to answer questions so please email if you would like to know more about these visits.

• Christmas Cards from The Friends of the Norris Museum are now on sale - 5 for £2.50 – from the museum or contact And the museum has a New Exhibition 'Unseen Collections' planned for the New Year.

Behind the doors of the museum storerooms lies a treasure trove of items. It’s not possible to display them all, but the museum is their guardian for us now, the future and for researchers. This exhibition explores how thousands of objects, artworks and books have come to the museum over the years, and how they are cared for. The exhibition will run from 22 January until 26 March 2022.

• St Ives in Bloom hopes that their New Year Litter Pick can go ahead in 2022. If you can help, meet them at the Drop Off point at the St Ives Park and Ride on SATURDAY morning 8 JANUARY at 10 am. They ask you to dress up warmly and encourage your family and friends to come with you! Litter pickers and bags will be available. Tales from the riverbank

Are you looking to let your property?

A regular series of stories from the Great Ouse Valley Trust

We are so lucky. Why? Well, less than a ten-minute drive away (6 miles), to Earith, a wetland reserve is being created that will be larger than any other in the country. It is commonly accepted now that if nature conservation in the UK has any chance of succeeding, it has to be on a big scale. In our area we can feel we are showing the way!

Do you want an agent that ticks these boxes:-

And now, it is much easier for us to see for ourselves. The new entrance is a right turn soon after Hermitage Marina on the Shelford Road to Willingham (B1050). There is good parking, signage, picnic tables, trails and viewpoints. And a breath-taking landscape. Waving reed beds and meres stretch into the distance as far as you can see. This is how the Fens must have appeared before they were drained. And this is only the half-way stage of the project – another 15 years to go!

Why is this important? Wildlife habitats are under enormous pressure with many species now endangered from the increasing demands of our growth and development. But wildlife is important too and so we need to balance both needs to ensure a healthy environment for us all. The restoration of wetlands by the RSPB as Hanson extracts the sand and gravel is part of this process. And it is working. Many bird species once common here are now returning in numbers – Bittern, Bearded Tit, Marsh Harrier, Little, Great and Cattle Egrets, for example, plus thousands of wintering waterfowl. Otters too have discovered the area.

Even the humble Starling puts on a show. Vast flocks swoop in to weave fantastic shapes in the sky at dusk before settling into the reeds to roost. This is happening now so pop in (it’s free) about half-an-hour before sunset and marvel at one of the wonders of the natural world – just down the road! We are fortunate to have opportunities like this in our beautiful Great Ouse Valley. If you are interested in the Trust you can visit www.greatousevalleytrust. and follow us on Facebook. 26
