ST IVES NOW! AND THEN I grew up in St Ives and in the 1950s, going to Stiles for tea was a special birthday ‘grown up’ treat. So it’s lovely to learn more of the history as below. (Gilly/Ed.) At 5 The Pavement in Market Hill stands Greggs the Bakers, continuing a tradition dating back 123 years.

We sell an eclectic range of modern and traditional beers from the UK and around the world, including many local breweries. Our selection showcases natural and biodynamic wines from passionate and innovative producers, from both the old and new world. We stock an exciting choice of artisan farmhouse ciders, if you’re after something a little bit different.

Take away or drink in

Charles Stiles was a confectioner and baker living in Carlisle Terrace. When the Fountain pub closed in 1909, Charles saw his chance and opened Stiles Luncheon and Tearoom and the Fountain cafe on the site. Charles retired by 1911 with the premises passing to his son Harry. Harry was good at promoting his business. Regular adverts appeared in the Hunts Post mentioning they were gold medallists, winners of 43 awards. Various local clubs and societies, such as the Rowing & Golf Clubs, held their annual dinner at the café. Stiles was a popular supplier of wedding cakes too! The family were still trading in the early 1960s. Prior to Greggs taking over, the Bakers Oven traded from the site. For much more about the past of St Ives, Google St Ives 100 Years Ago.

It’s Heritage Open Day on Saturday 17th September 2022 We have a great start this year with the Mace-Bearer himself at the Town Hall showing the display of Civic Regalia – the Civic robes, tricorn hats, Clerk’s wig, jabot and gloves which give us a glimpse of the past, and a chance to try on the robes.

A new community hub in the heart of St Ives, filled with coffee and good vibes

On Needingworth Road both the Mosque and the Sacred Heart Church are open. The church has a fascinating history. Our Grade 1 listed Bridge Chapel has reopened following necessary repairs and is one of only four Bridge Chapels in England. It is on the site of the original river crossing and has been many things in the past, including a pub called Little Hell. If only it could talk, the tales it could tell! Fellmonger House garden on The Broadway is open again, a fascinating house that has seen many changes in St Ives. The Norris Museum will have special activities for children. Holt Island Nature Reserve has its own special charm - a wet woodland habitat supporting a wide variety of fauna and flora. Its history is as a place where willow was grown for basket making and hopefully a basket maker will be on hand demonstrating this traditional craft. The Methodist Church has the theme Then & Now to show how the Church has managed to change with the times and yet remain true to its roots. From 3 pm there is Gin n Jazz in All Saints Parish Church with the Four Winds Sax Quartet, part of the Jazz & Blues weekend in the town. Music and admission are free although donations for the Church are invited, and you pay for any drinks. Can you help? If you would like to be actively involved on the day why not volunteer to help? You would be wearing a bright pink sash – so you are easily seen, standing in town for a few hours and handing out flyers to residents and visitors, answering questions and giving directions. Please contact or 07946 629098. So look out for the information flyers with full details on this special opportunity to learn more of our heritage. Jane Amaral for the Civic Society of St Ives.

Bringing together our 3 passions – Cycling, Coffee and Community. We welcome everyone looking for a cool place to relax, chat and enjoy some delights from our freshly prepared menu.

Bike parking. Cosy courtyard. Dog friendly inside and out. Light, fresh and happy environment to relax in. A quiet side room to work from and free WIFI. Opening times: 9am – 5pm Monday – Saturday. Sunday 10am – 4pm. We are closed Tuesdays.

We offer:

Fresh made to order loaded sourdough toasts, sandwiches and healthy breakfasts. Takeaway options with our sandwiches, smoothies and great Coffee!

The Judges started their tour of the town in the beautiful museum garden, walked along The Waits, with its beautiful array of flowers, saw the impressive new frontage and railings at the Methodist Church, and the SIIB “Postbox Garden” and then through the churchyard to Holt Island. The Judges were very interested in the way the island promotes conservation and in the recordings from the camera traps on the Holt Island website, showing what happens when visitors are not there!. The Judges were very impressed by the new community area at Kings Hedges, and enjoyed their visit to Wheatfields School where an enthusiastic group of children were especially proud of their golden beetroot plants! The newly planted flowerbeds at Ramsey Road cemetery also took centre stage, and a visit to several beautiful allotments showing the hard work of many St Ives gardeners. A priority visit was to Station Road, where SIIB and local businesses worked together to put it forward as “Best Commercial Area”. The new tubs and window boxes, the beautiful planting in Cromwell Mews and in The Courtyard, all looked after by small independent businesses, won their interest and the beautiful “silver birches” flowerbed in the Bus Station was also looking its best. The new corner bed and information board by Harrison Way was also a community and business led event, with a blue plaque "Railway Hotel" now attached to the Thomas Quinn building. The hanging baskets looked good as the Judges walked back through town, returning by boat back to the Norris Museum, where the volunteers joined them for lunch. St Ives in Bloom would like to thank Pasco Hussain and Chris Morgan (Electric River Boat Company) for providing transport, our hosts at the Norris Museum, Town Mayor Cllr Phil Pope who welcomed the judges, and all hardworking volunteers who helped to get the town looking its best on the day.
