Allan Wolf ABOUT THE ARTIST: Two-time winner of the North Carolina YA Book Award, Allan Wolf is an author and performance poet. His children and young adult book awards include School Library Journal Best Books, ALA Best Book for Young Adults, Lion and the Unicorn Honor for Excellence in North American Poetry, and the prestigious Claudia Lewis Poetry Award for the best poetry book of the year. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: IMMERSED IN VERSE: DIVING INTO POETRY (6-8) With hundreds of poems committed to memory, he adapts this presentation’s content based on each audience and occasion. Wolf is aware that most audiences contain future (or practicing) poets, so he makes a point of speaking about the joys of writing and living the poet’s life. ALLAN WOLF’S POETRY PALOOZA (K-5) Poetry Palooza introduces young readers to four important elements of poetry: Rhyme, Rhythm, Music, and Story. RESIDENCY: Active Voice: Experiencing Poetry through Presentation and Drama. Allan is available for 3 to 5 day residencies tailored to the classes and teaching a variety of poetry writing techniques. Participants also learn what performance poetry is and a few theatre/presentation techniques to help them better understand and appreciate the poems they read. Grade Level/Maximums: 3-8, 30 students, 50-60 minutes, 4/day Technical Requirements: Dry erase board or chalk board and projector Total Fee: $1000 /1 day Your School’s Portion: $334 /1 day WORKSHOPS: Writing workshops are scheduled after a larger assembly where students have seen how poetry “performs on the stage.” The follow-up session is a time to explore how poetry “performs on the page.” Allan will introduce students to example poems, stopping to note the specific qualities of each.
