Crane makes light work of lifting the ‘lid’ on the VOS A 200-tonne crane became an unusual first ‘support act’ for the Versatile Outdoor Space (VOS), or amphitheatre, in the new heart of the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct. Over four weeks in July and August, the crane was used to carefully manoeuvre 10, 10-tonne sections of the VOS’s massive shade structure into place, resting them on temporary towers where they were welded in place. Applying cutting-edge engineering,

the steel sections now form two completed beams fixed to footings buried 15 metres deep in the ground on each side of the VOS. The impressive design gives the impression that the shade structure almost floats above the stage. The precinct’s distinctive voronoi, or polygon, pattern is reflected in the shade structure’s infill, which also was lifted into place with the assistance of the crane. With these final major structural pieces in place, the amphitheatre

overall size and shape is now clearly evident against the city skyline. Also now in place is the 3.5 tonne main stage door – the amphitheatre’s answer to a traditional stage curtain. The door pivots, creating an opening of 12 metres wide and 6 metres high. The stage’s versatility is also becoming evident. When complete, the VOS will act as a performance venue, for

audiences of up to 5000. With the door closed, it converts to a function venue, with up to around 200 people able to be seated in air conditioned comfort on the large undercover stage, serviced by a kitchen. But even with the door closed and locked, the outdoor stage area is at least five metres wide - big enough for smaller plug-in and play performances. Managing Contractors ADCO Constructions has now turned its attention to interior fit-out.

New modern amenities, pathways and landscaping will also complement the stage and mature growth trees, the concert lawn and landscaping will be completed and allowed to establish over the warm summer months. The Arts Centre Gold Coast will begin formal programming following the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With two of Australia’s rising cabaret stars at the helm, Mother’s Ruin moves from misery to vaudeville in a moment, intertwining excess and prohibition, history and (re)invention. This theatrical cabaret features music originally performed by Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Martha Wainwright, The Popes, The Pretenders and more.

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast SAT 25 NOV 2017 – SUN 18 FEB 2018 TIME Daily 10am – 5pm VENUE Main Gallery and Gallery Foyer COST Adult $12 Concession $10 Child under 12 free FULL EVENTS PROGRAM Keep an eye out for the full events program released in late October. ‘Fashion photography is a way to understand how we represent the construction of female beauty and how it has changed over the years. While it’s about selling beauty, selling fashion, it’s also about selling dreams. It can show precisely how the clothes look, however fashion photography can also reflect an idea, an atmosphere or a feeling.’ Nathalie Herschdorfer – Curator This exhibition has been organised by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis/New York/ Paris/Lausanne, in collaboration with Gold Coast City Gallery.

The world’s biggest names in fashion photography coming to Gold Coast City Gallery this summer. Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast celebrates some of the most iconic images from the past century of fashion. Conde Nast, the powerhouse publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour, has opened its photography archive to the public to create this stunning exhibition. Glamorous, provocative, beautiful, accomplished and magical – fashion imagery has always been associated with some of the most famous names in the history of photography. The collection of images, selected by photography curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, show the sharp contrast in the first fashion photographs from the early 20th century compared to the modern day ranging from 1920s shots of Broadway actresses to some of the most recognisable photos of the 1990s supermodel era. Produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography

the exhibition includes work by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, Horst P. Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Corinne Day, Deborah Turbeville and Sølve Sundsbø. Also on display in the exhibition is a selection of vintage couture fashion from The Darnell Collection – Australia’s largest private collection of fashion from the late 1700s to the 20th century.
