Don’t miss this family favourite from Queensland Ballet. Set in the French countryside in the 1950s, Queensland Ballet’s La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) delights and entertains audiences as a love triangle creates comic chaos. Lise loves Colas. Colas loves Lise. But Lise’s mother, the Widow Simone, has agreed that her wayward daughter should marry Alain, son of a pompous, wealthy vineyard owner. Alain however, is more interested in his precious umbrella than romance. A popular family favourite because of its engaging story, colourful humour and beautiful dancing, this stunning production will leave you applauding for more.

52 CULTURAL PRECINCT

Speaker test puts spotlight on future programming Speaker testing for the Stage 1 outdoor stage and concert lawn has marked an important milestone in the evolution of our new Cultural Precinct. The Arts Centre Gold Coast Board Chair Robyn Archer AO joined Mayor Tom Tate on site while some of the world’s best speaker systems were put through their paces for the versatile outdoor space. The test has now turned the focus onto programming the venue which will be ready for concerts, events and civic celebrations from early next year.

Excitement is building as the Gold Coast consolidates its reputation nationally as a strong arts and cultural community. ‘Many artists living here are winning national awards and touring internationally. If you have a strong arts community you are a society. Imagine not hearing music. The arts are an essential service,’ said Ms Archer. Already renowned producers including Bonnie Lythgoe are choosing to hold world premier performances at the Cultural Precinct. Her latest pantomime

production The Adventures of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell opens on 23 June before touring Sydney and Melbourne. With Todd McKenney leading the cast as Captain Hook, the production exemplifies the aspirations of our new precinct by presenting nationally recognised stars and providing opportunity for emerging junior actors and dancers from the Gold Coast. Mayor Tom Tate believes that the new Versatile Outdoor Space (VOS, or amphitheatre)

CULTURAL PRECINCT 53

will be an exemplary performance platform for local and emerging artists. ‘While I talk about the venue hosting headline international acts, the precinct is really about supporting our local artists,’ Mayor Tate said. The venue’s versatility allows it to transform into a black box theatre rivalling those

in Australia’s capital cities to a function space for 250 seated patrons which opens onto amazing parkland with breathtaking views to the Surfers Paradise skyline.

‘This is a real sign of the Gold Coast growing up as a city.’ Work is also progressing on concept design for the new purpose-built, international standard City Gallery.

Jesse Judd, of design competition winning ARM Architecture, said the Stage 1a outdoor stage and concert lawn would be a first-class performance venue.

Image Top: Final designs of the outdoor stage include a self supporting shade structure to provide sun and glare protection for performers on stage.
