Commissioned by Bleach* Festival, The Farm, Co3 Australia This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Frank’s a lonely guy who wants to make his imaginary friends real. Harnessing electricity from a storm, he animates his world with nothing but his imagination and a cardboard box. Battling a physical impairment, Frank creates monsters to fulfil his desire to be normal and to be accepted by others. Can he control what he creates? And where is the real monster anyway?

Frank Enstein is a retelling of the classic tale for children and adults. This magical dance-theatre piece illuminates a path to selfacceptance. 2016 Helpmann Award nominee, The Farm, combines a wicked sense of humour, magic and dance to create a show for the child in all of us.

This event is part of our Indigenous Program, proudly presented by Bond University. A Burrinja Touring Exhibition. With thanks: Australian Government – Visions of Australia, NETS Victoria/EDF, Creative Victoria and Gordon Darling Foundation. Image: KAREN STANDKE, 2007, Road to Maralinga II, oil on canvas

Black Mist Burnt Country Black Mist Burnt Country is a national touring exhibition of artworks by over 30 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists which commemorates the little known story of the British atomic tests in Australia in the 1950s. On 27 September 1956 the British exploded an atomic bomb in the southern part of the Great Victoria Desert of South Australia. The place would become known as Maralinga. It was the first of seven British atomic tests in Australia in 1956 and 1957,

which were followed by over 600 so called ‘minor tests’ with highly toxic substances such as plutonium and beryllium until 1963. The Maralinga tests were indeed not the first the British Government conducted on Australian territory. Three atomic devices were detonated in the Montebello archipelago off the coast of Western Australia further two in Emu, about 400 km north of Maralinga. Yet, it was the term Maralinga, an Aboriginal word for thunder, the tests have

ART 31

been associated with and which gave this dark part of Australian history its iconic name. Selected from public and private collections the exhibition presents artworks from the past seven decades across the mediums of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, new media and music. From post-WWII modernists to contemporary artists, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the varied perspectives and creative approaches.

Included are works by Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Ian Howard, Pam Debenham, Toni Robertson, Rosemary Laing and Susie Norrie among Aboriginal artists Jonathan Kumintjarra Brown, Judy Watson, Hilda Moodoo and Yvonne Edwards among others. The exhibition revisits the history of the atomic test program at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands and its on-going legacies. It retells the story of the forced removal of Indigenous people,

the devastation of country, the exposure of servicemen. A variety of interactive elements will enable visitors to the exhibition to learn about the social, political and environmental dimensions, while placing the Australian story in the context of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War and beyond.
