S. Michelle Babcock SMB Studio www.MichellesEnamels.com Michelle has been fascinated by jewelry since she was eight years old, when she made a brooch and tie tac for her parents. She earned her BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing at the University of Kansas. Cloisonne enamels, which she thinks of as tiny paintings that can be worn, became her passion. Rachel Leathers Hearts of Stone Jewelry www.HrtsofStone.etsy.com Having been in the costume industry for 22 years, the 1-2 punch of both the writers’ strike and economic downturn gave Rachel the impetus to channel her creative energies elsewhere. She’s been a seamstress and more, with even a brief stint on a reality TV show, and dabbled for years in jewelry design on the side. The self-taught designer took the opportunity of all the time she had to make HoSJ a full-time endeavor. Rachel’s use of gemstones as a medium comes from a lifelong love affair with all things rock, gem and mineral (and shiny things).
