DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY?

Heartwave Cardio Screening is returning to Listowel, Co. Kerry with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The Bpro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. Of the 425 nursing homes in the Nursing Home Support Scheme we are the eleventh lowest funded in the country, we do not receive HSE funding and rely heavily on fundraising to maintain our excellent reputation. We are committed to growing this service in a sustainable and responsible way. Our recent HIQA, Helth and Safety Authority and Environmental Health officer inspection reports reflect the positive changes that have significantly enhanced the lives of residents in our home. Over the past two years we have raised over €220,000 through the Ring of Kerry Cycle, the National Lottery and other fundraising events and donations. These funds permitted us to complete works which otherwise would have been out of our reach financially for many years to come. These works included the building a 3 bedded extension, Kitchen and Dining room extension, 2 enclosed gardens and a complete refurbishment of all communal areas in the home. Two of these rooms were purpose built to accommodate the needs of a people with a spinal injury and an acquired brain injury. One room includes the use of bluetooth technology which allows the resident to operate the TV, laptop, phone, light switches and plug sockets via a mouse that is operated using head control only. This resident was unable to source any other home in Kerry that could meet his needs and had this room not been built it would have been necessary for him to move outside the County. We have also purchased a mini van which we use to take residents on weekly trips. Pat Treacy, of Listowel, a long-time supporter of Aras Mhuire, was at the Soldiers Field on November 6th in Chicago to watch Ireland Clinch their first ever win over the All Blacks. Pat has managed to get the only Jersey that was signed by the entire Irish Team on the night. Through his connections in AIG Pat has also acquired an All Blacks Jersey signed by 4 of the All Black World Cup team and a Dublin Jersey signed by the All Ireland Champions. Sean Healy and Stephen Stack of AIB have provided a signed Kerry Jersey. These Jerseys and more will be auctioned through a national online forum and will be publicised with the help of Billy Keane. The proceeds will go to acquired brain and spinal injury services at Aras Mhuire Nursing Home.

DANCE, DANCE… WHEREVER YOU MAY BE… Micheal Carr was born on 18th May 1966 to parents Maureen and the late Timmy Carr. Brothers Tadhg, Sean, Neilus RIP, Bryan and his sister Kay. Micheal was always the entrepreneur and at a very young age developed business skills to start him on his road. Micheal always had a love for Irish music, song and dance and formed many variety shows incorporating all the talent from his local parish of Ballydonoghue and all the other surrounding parishes in North Kerry. He also held many All Ireland Medals with his mother’s help and guidance. He later formed Ceol Chiarrai Teo and toured the world with his sell out shows in faraway places such as Asia, Australia, Europe and UK. He married the love of his life Martina and had son Jonathan & daughter Ava and predeceased son Niall.

Micheal’s life was a very busy one, what with incorporating owning two hotels, Ceol Chiarrai Teo and finding time to lobby to build a state of the art theatre in Ballybunion which can host 528 patrons. He also ran various festivals, including bringing Bryan Adams to Pearse Stadium in Galway but his most successful was staging the inaugural World Fleadh in Ballybunion in 2006. He also brought many big names to Ballybunion including Jedward, Bressie, Walking on Cars etc. Micheal used the money he earned from travelling the world with his shows to help build the Tintean Theatre. This was to be his greatest legacy. Even in his last days he spoke of it and how he wanted it used in the future. Hopefully with the help of a few people his vision will continue and become even more successful. Micheal, throughout his lifetime raised a lot of money for charities and since his passing a lot of people have told the family how he had helped them privately. Most of these stories were never known to the family till now. This just shows the compassion he had for his friends and fellow human beings.

On Wednesday 4th of January, what better way to celebrate his life than by hosting his show “Spirit of Ireland” at the Tintean Theatre. Members of his dance troupe staged this show prior to them embarking on a 13 week tour of Germany. Past dancers and singers also performed on the night including Elaine Foley, Sean Slemon & Patrick O’Mahony. All monies made on the night were given to the Palliative Care Unit in Tralee University Hospital where Micheal attended in the final months of his life. Sadly Micheal lost his battle on 20th December 2016, he may be gone but he will never be forgotten……… Ar dheis De go raibh a anam. Micheals months mind will be held on Thursday 19th January at St. Johns Church, Ballybunion at 10.00am.

DADLAND

By Keggie Carew

Winner of the Costa Biography Prize. Tom Carew was a left-handed stutterer, a maverick and a law unto himself. As a member of the Jedburghs, an elite SOE unit, he was parachuted behind enemy lines to raise resistance in France, then Burma, in the Second World War. But his wartime exploits are only the start of it, and Keggie soon finds herself in a far more astonishing and consuming place than she had bargained for. Dadland is a manhunt. Keggie takes us on a spellbinding journey, in peace and war, into surprising and shady corners of history, her rackety English childhood, the poignant breakdown of her family, the corridors of dementia and beyond. Part-detective story, part-memoir, part-history book, it is a celebration of the technicolour life an impossible, irresistible, unstoppable man.

Beale GAA Club will hold a Special General Meeting on Saturday, January 28th, in Ballybunion Community Centre, at 8.30pm. Nominations for club officers - chairperson, vice-chairperson(s), assistant secretary and PRO - and motions to be sent to the Secretary, Brid Griffin, by January 18th.

A sell-out performance and a great night of dancing and entertainment at Beale GAA’s “Strictly Come Dancing” in Ballybunion Community Centre over the festive season. The annual Christmas extravaganza has now become an established date in the social calendar. The dancers deserve a special word of thanks for stepping forward and tripping the light fantastic on this great social occasion. Friendships were formed and blisters and bruises endured through the many hours of practice leading up to the event. On the night, they pulled out all the stops and what a show they put on! It was indeed a professional work of arts with superb group performances, high quality set design and marvellous individual dance routines which enthralled the huge crowd of about eight hundred people in the community centre. Four couples tied on full points and such was the high standard that it proved a very difficult task for the judges to decide on the eventual winner. The judges’ choice were Natalie Herbert and James Fogarty, while John Joy and Mag Scanlan were voted the people’s choice. There may have been two winning couples on the night but it can be truly said that each and every couple was a winner in this spectacular show: Pam Meaney and Johnny Stokes O’Sullivan; Sarah Blake and Corey Meehan; Carmel Carolan and Mike Beasley, Michaela Layden and Ger Buckley, Bernie Kendlin and Diarmuid Toomey, Mags Brennan and John Brennan, Marie Kennelly and Conor Liston, Anna Marie Buckley and Kevin Lynch, Jo Jo O’Sullivan and Jackie Hegarty, Jacinta Breen and Con Mulvihill, Cormac Cahill and Tara Moran and Georgina Keane and John Hannan. Lasting friendships have been forged and they now call themselves “Strictly family”. A big thank you to all fourteen couples and to their families who supported them on their journey. See “Strictly” photographs on Facebook: Beale Strictly Come Dancing. This fantastic night continued with a disco until late, as the large crowd

danced the night away to the sound of music, reminiscent of the good old days of The Central dancehall. This was our fourth annual Christmas event and it is fair to say that the bar has been raised even higher on this occasion. To dance teacher, Jackie O’Mahoney, master of ceremonies, Tony Moore, the judges, sponsors, supporters and everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, a big ‘thank you’ from Beale GAA Club. This annual Christmas event become a major occasion for the club and the whole community, as proceeds from this event go towards the development of the club’s facilities for all our players, from under-6s, right up to the senior team, with plans to further upgrade facilities to meet the need of our ever-growing young population. Beale/Asdee/Ballylongford are through to the semi-final of the 2016 Under21 North Kerry Championship, having defeated Knocknagoshel/Brosna on Saturday in Duagh. Beale players on the victorious side were Dan Ellis, Johnny O’Sullivan, Neilus Mulvihill, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle, Rory Mulvihill, Cormac Walsh and Shane Hanrahan. Maurice Mannix is team selector. We now await details of the semi-final pairings. Beale GAA are delighted to announce that Beale Hill Wind Farm is our main sponsor again for 2017. Dan Ahern recently presented a sponsorship cheque to the club. Many thanks to Dan for his continued patronage of Beale GAA.

Beale GAA extend sympathies to the Breen, Quane and Carr families on their recent bereavements. Jacinta Breen’s young nephew, Ogie Barrett, died suddenly on New Year’s Day. Jacinta had performed in our recent ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ show. Sympathies are also extended to the family of Micheál Carr who has passed to his eternal reward. Micheál’s son, Jonathan, played with Beale minors who won the county league earlier in the year. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha. For Beale GAA club updates, follow us on Facebook: Beale GAA Club. Beale GAA Club appreciate your continuing support and wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year

ASDEE GAA

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The A.G.M.of St. Marys, Asdee GAA Club due to take place at the Community Centre on Saturday night last was been postponed due to a bereavement and has now be rescheduled for this Saturday January 14th commencing at 8pm at the Community Centre..All positions in the Club are up for grabs so come along; attend the meeting; air your views on the situation and keep the St. Marys flag flying; all for the betterment of St. Marys starting its 31st year since its formation in 1986. New members going forward for a position in the Club would be very welcome but must be present at the meeting on the night; otherwise it will be a wasted nomination. This is the rule and will be strictly adhered to.

NORTH KERRY A G M: The Annual General Meeting of the North Kerry Football Board will take place at Christys “The Well Bar”, Listowel on Wednesday January 25th with a starting time of 8pm. Eddie Anthony Walsh from the local club will once again be seeking re-election as Vice Chairman. Local delegates will be in attendance. Certainly Eddie has proved to be an outstanding Officer for both his Club and District Board and who was also a well know Referee at senior level; but even though now semi retired he was recently called upon once again to help out in an hour of need when there was nobody available on the day for the McCarthys Insurance Brokers Senior League Division 2 Final between Ballylongford and Ballyduff for one reason or another. It was then left to Eddie to officiate and the dedicated 70 plus years of age probably wrote himself into at least the North Kerry Football History books. UNDER 21s. Bally/Asdee/Beale 3-10 Knocknagoshel/Brosna 0-8. Bally/Asdee/Beale qualified for the semi final of the Under 21 North Kerry Under 21 Football Championship sponsored by Dennehy Vetenary Clinic,Duagh; played in perfect conditions at Duagh on Saturday last. This was a game that the treble combination outfit dictated play for the majority of the game and were rarely troubled by the Knock/Brosna combination; however on saying all that Knock/Brosna did have their moments but found Eoin “Bomber” Tydings in inspirational form bringing off a series of top class saves in the winners goals. A well taken goal midway through the opening half from Beales Shane Hanrahan saw Bally/Asdee/Beale hit the front at the break by 1-5 to 0-3. On resumption the eventual winners got completely on top and further goals coming from Jack Mulvihill and Darragh Keane sealed the issue. Overall this was a very impressive team performance with each member playing their part and going on this form the team will fancy their chances of going a step forward at least; especially as there are a few others who were unable to attend for one reason or another but hopefully will be fully fit and rairing to go for a semi final tilt. BALLYDONOGHUE GAA

NK Minor Championship Div1 semi-final played in Duagh Ballydonoghue 1-9. St.Senans 1-12. U21 NK championship: quarter- final; Ballydonoghue 1-13 Listowel 1-10. Listowel are entitled to feel a little bit hard down by with this result and will feel they at least deserved a second bite of the cherry after losing out by a single score in this closely contested encounter in Moyvane on Sat last. Both sides were without the services of their Kerry U21 players who were playing Tipperary in the McGrath cup on Sunday. We led at half time five points to nine but Listowel had pulled themselves back into the game in the second half and the sides were level with less than ten minutes remaining. It was then the crucial score that changed the outcome of game came about. A shot from Darragh Sheehy dropped in front of the Listowel keeper and as he went to collect his leg went from under him in the slippery conditions and the ball ended up in the back the net for what was to prove to be the decisive score. Even though we played well in patches there is plenty of room for improvement and we will need to if we are to progress.

TARBERT GAA

MEANING OF LIFE

Does your life have meaning? Is death the end? Is there a God? Does God care about you? Is Heaven real?

These are some of the questions l have struggled with for years. But now l am discovering answers and my life is being changed dramatically. Can I invite you to join me on Sunday mornings 11a.m. at Listowel Christian fellowship Sincerely. ...Bridie (Dillon) Hartney Why did Jesus as God become a human being and come to earth... In his own words. “ The son of man came to seek, save the lost”. Luke 19:9-10

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. P.M.
