SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA OLD TOWN The pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela is representative of the Christian struggle against Islam in Spain. Religious sieges destroyed the city in the late 10th century, before rebuilding began that resulted in the city that exists today. There were massive migrations of Christians over the ages, resulting in one of the greatest holy cities for Christianity. Styles and techniques were created in this city that influenced Christian culture and changed the region’s art and architecture for centuries. At the centre is Praza do Obradoiro with its imposing cathedral, where the remains of St. James are said to be buried. The cathedral is Santiago’s most famous building, a Romanesque structure with later Gothic and Baroque elements. theaddressmagazine.com
